Update Service
With the Update Service PC application you can update your phone over the Internet (search and find new and improved software versions). You can update whenever you want to, and always keep your phone software up to date. You will be guided smoothly through the update process. To start using Update Service, download and install it on your computer.
Before you Start
To be able to use Update Service you must have a DCU 60 USB cable or DSS 25 deskstand. Compare the contact on the bottom of your phone with the pictures below to find out which product to use with your phone.

System Requirements
Operating system
Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher) or Windows XP (SP1 or higher).
Recommended system requirements
· Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz or higher · 5 GB free hard drive space after installation · 512 MB RAM · 2 available USB 2.0 ports · Internet Explorer 4.0 Service pack 1, or later · Macromedia Flash Player 8, or later (download from: www.adobe.com) The Macromedia Flash Player must be installed using Internet Explorer. The application will not work if you install Macromedia Flash Player using another Internet browser.
Minimum system requirements
· Processor: 600 MHz · 600 MB free hard drive space · 256 MB RAM · 1 USB 1.1 port · Internet Explorer 4.0 SP1 · Macromedia Flash Player 8 (download from: www.adobe.com) The Macromedia Flash Player must be installed using Internet Explorer. The application will not work if you install Macromedia Flash Player using another Internet browser.
Internet connection
· 0.5 Mbit/sec minimum, preferably broadband.
Firewall and proxy settings
Make sure that your firewall is correctly set and allows Update Service to access all the information that it needs to function, % 7 Firewall Settings. If you use a proxy server, make sure that you have the correct settings, % 8 Proxy Settings.
Synchronization software
If you have any synchronization software installed on your computer it should either be configured to release the communication ports or to shut down completely when you use Update Service.

Installing Update Service
Before installation, make sure that your system meets the minimum system requirements.
Installing from the Sony Ericsson Website
To install Update Service
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. In your Internet browser, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support. Select a region and country. Select your phone from the list or enter your phone model in the text field. Select Sony Ericsson Update Service. Select download under UpdateService_Inst_X.X.XX.XX.exe. Download and save the application on your computer, for example, on the Desktop. Double-click the downloaded file to install Update Service. Select a language, click OK.

Installing USB Flash Drivers for Fast Port Phones
Before you can update a Fast port phone, the USB flash drivers needs to be installed.
To install USB flash drivers
1. Before you install the drivers, make sure that: · The phone is fully charged. · The USB cable is connected to the computer. 2. If you use a CDS-60 deskstand together with the DCU-60, make sure that no charger is connected to the deskstand. 3. Turn off the mobile phone. 4. Remove and replace the battery to completely restart the phone. It is important to always do a complete restart of the phone, by removing the battery, before you install drivers or update it with Update Service. 5. Press and hold and attach the USB cable to the phone. The Found new hardware wizard should start automatically. 6. Choose Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click Next. If the hardware wizard is unable to locate the drivers automatically, the drivers are available in C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\setup\drivers\USB. 7. Restart the computer to finish the installation.
Installing USB Drivers for Deskstand DSS-25
Before you can update your phone using the DSS-25, the USB drivers needs to be installed.
To install USB drivers for DSS-25
1. Insert the USB cable of the deskstand into the computer. The Found new hardware wizard will start automatically. 2. Choose Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click Next. If the hardware wizard is unable to locate the drivers automatically, the drivers are available in C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\setup\drivers\DSS-20-25\W2K_XP. 3. When the drivers are installed, click Finish. In most cases the Found new hardware wizard will run twice. 4. Restart the computer to finish the installation.

Updating the Phone Using DCU-60
To update the phone using DCU-60
1. Before you update the phone, make sure that: · You install the USB flash drivers (first update only), % 5 Installing USB Flash Drivers for Fast Port Phones. · The phone battery is fully charged. · The USB cable is connected to the computer (not to the phone). 2. If you use a CDS-60 deskstand together with the DCU-60, make sure that no charger is connected to the deskstand. 3. Double-click .
When Update Service is started for the first time, the application accesses the Internet to download content that it needs to be able to run the service. This may take some time, depending on Internet connection speed. Available updates for the application will be downloaded and installed automatically every time the application is started. 4. 5. 6. 7. Select language and click the arrow to continue. When Update Service has started, click Start. Read through the legal agreement. Click Accept to agree. Choose the connection type. Compare the contact on the bottom of the phone, and click on the corresponding picture on the screen. 8. Turn the mobile phone off. 9. Remove the battery to completely restart the phone. It is important to always do a complete restart of the phone, by removing the battery, before you update it with Update Service. The update will not work if you do not do this. 10. Remove the SIM card. 11. Put the battery back into place. 12. Press and hold and attach the USB cable to the phone (do not release until you are requested to do so). 13. After a few seconds, the identification of the phone is started. 14. If new software is available, click Continue to update your phone with the new software. 15. When the software has been updated (or no updates found), exit the Update Service and disconnect the USB cable.

To update the phone using DSS-25

Firewall and Proxy Settings
To be able to use Update Service you must have the correct firewall and proxy settings. This chapter tells you what you need to know to set this up.
Firewall Settings
Today most computers have a firewall. If this is not set correctly, Update Service will not function properly.
Personal firewall
A personal firewall is often used if Update Service is installed on a single computer. If that is the case, the firewall must allow ma3platform.exe to access the Internet.

Central firewall
A central firewall is often used in larger networks. If a central firewall is used, one of the following must be allowed: · Java applications to freely access the Internet. or · Java applications to access ma3.extranet.sonyericsson.com.
Proxy Settings
If Update Service cannot access the Internet, you may have to enter proxy settings for the application. If this is the case, a pop-up window appears on the screen. These settings are specific for your network. Ask your service provider for help if you do not know them.
To enter the correct proxy settings
1. Click OK in the pop-up window.
2. Enter the address to the network proxy server in the Proxy server: field.
3. Enter the correct port number in the Port: field. 4. Click OK to finish.

The following information may help you when you use Update Service.
General
Here are solutions and answers regarding the general use and specifications of Update Service.
Problem
How long does it take to update a phone?
Solution
If new software is available, a normal update takes about 1015 minutes. This depends on the Internet connection speed and the phone model. If no update is available, the process takes no more than 1-2 minutes. No, you do not. Every time you start Update Service, the application accesses the Internet and checks for and installs available updates. No, Update Service is an online application and needs access to the Internet when in use. To find out if there is a new version of the software, connect the phone and run the application. For a complete and updated list of the products that can be updated using Update Service, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support.
Do I, at any time, need to update Update Service?
Is it possible to run Update Service offline? How do I know if a new phone software version is available?
Is it possible to change the language in a phone when using Update Service? Is the same Update Service used for all the supported phones?
It is not possible to change the language in a phone. It is only possible to update the phone with a newer version of the software that is already installed on it. Yes, it is the same application for all supported phone models. This means that you do not have to download a new application when you change phone model.

Problem
Can I have the charger attached to the deskstand when using Update Service? Update Service is not working properly.
Solution
No, you cannot. Disconnect the charger before start using Update Service. 1. Delete cookies and temporary Internet files. Click Start/ Settings/Control Panel/Internet Options. Delete the cookies and temporary Internet files. 2. Remove Update Service. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Add or Remove Programs. Select Update Service and then Change/Remove to remove the application. 3. Restart the computer. 4. Install Update Service again, % 4 Installing from the Sony Ericsson Website.
Starting Update Service
Here are solutions and answers that can be helpful when starting Update Service.
Problem
I get the message "Connection to server could not be established".
Solution
1. Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. 2. Make sure that your virus protection programs and firewalls allow ma3platform.exe to access the Internet. Update Service needs access to the Internet to work. The User guide for your firewall should tell you how to do this. 3. The server might be down or not working properly. Please wait for a few minutes and try again. If the problem remains, please contact the Sony Ericsson Call Center. The USB cable does not have any active components and Windows will not find it by itself. Windows will only find a phone that is attached to it while is pressed. The USB cable requires drivers to work, % 5 Installing USB Flash Drivers for Fast Port Phones. When updating a phone using Fast port, the USB flash drivers needs to be installed. % 5 Installing USB Flash Drivers for Fast Port Phones.
Windows does not find the DCU60 USB cable.
The Hardware wizard suddenly starts when connecting a Fast port phone, and then nothing happens. What is wrong? Synchronization software causes problems.
The default behavior of the synchronization software is to allocate communication ports needed by Update Service. This could lead to Update service not working properly. The synchronization software should either be configured to release the ports or to shut down completely when you use Update Service.

Problem
I get the message "No deskstand connected" even though I know it is connected.
Solution
1. If you use a USB hub, connect the deskstand directly to the computer. 2. Close down any synchronization applications, such as PC Suite or Microsoft Active synch. Make sure that the applications are not running in the background. 3. Enable the COM port since it may be disabled. Click Start/ Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Expand Ports (COM and LPT) in the list of devices. If SEMC DSS SyncStation is disabled and marked with a red cross, right-click SEMC DSS SyncStation and select Enable. 4. Make sure the deskstand drivers are working properly. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Expand Ports (COM and LPT) in the list of devices. Right-click SEMC DSS SyncStation and click Properties. If the drivers are working properly, it says This device is working properly, in Device status under the General tab. 5. The deskstand must be connected to the computer when starting Update Service. 6. Uninstall the deskstand and reinstall it. To uninstall, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and select SEMC DSS SyncStation Driver. Click Change/Remove and select Continue in the pop-up window. To reinstall, % 5 Installing USB Drivers for Deskstand DSS-25. 7. Change to another COM port. Move the deskstand to another USB port and reinstall it, % 5 Installing USB Drivers for Deskstand DSS-25. 8. For P900/P910, if PC Suite is installed, do the following: · Right-click the Phone connection link or mRouter in the system tray and select Properties.

Uninstalling Update Service
Here are solutions and answers that can be helpful when uninstalling Update Service.
Problem
After uninstalling Update Service not all files are removed. How do I remove them?
Solution
After the application is uninstalled you can delete the Update Service folder in Program Files / Sony Ericsson / Update Service. This way all files are deleted from your computer.
