BORN ON THE RACETRACK.
THE IS F STORY.
It all began when a small group of Lexus engineers, all passionate motorsport enthusiasts, started discussing an idea for a new high-performance Lexus.
On the racetrack its performance would push back frontiers. Yet on public roads it could be driven as smoothly and comfortably as every other Lexus. Inspired by this idea, and led by Chief Engineer Yukihiko Yaguchi, the team worked autonomously from all other major Lexus development programmes. By 2003 they were able to present the IS F prototype for examination by Lexus senior management. Based on the award-winning IS sports sedan, it was equipped with a powerful 5.0-litre V8 engine, state-of-the-art 8-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission, a race-tuned suspension and extremely powerful brakes. The car's technological innovations, stunning performance and exciting handling characteristics generated so much enthusiasm at Lexus that the project was given the green light and the Lexus IS F was born.
"The IS F is incredibly fun to drive and I'll challenge anyone to drive it and not start smiling. It's designed to allow drivers to safely realise their passion for high-performance driving, whether for circuit racing or in everyday use."

OUR HOME STRAIGHT (AND CURVES).
"F" is the new designation reserved for Lexus cars of ultra-high performance, of which the IS F is the first. "F" stands for "Fuji Speedway" where the IS F was developed and tested. Situated in the foothills of Mount Fuji in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture, Fuji Speedway first opened as a road course in 1966. In 1976 the track hosted the first Formula One event ever held in Japan. In September 2007, after a major reconfiguration, Fuji Speedway once again hosted the Japanese Grand Prix. The circuit includes the longest straight (1.5 km) in the Formula One season, where extremely high speeds can be attained. To recognise the important role of the Fuji Speedway in the IS F project, the new "F" logo integrates the most demanding corners from the racetrack in its design.

POISED TO PERFORM.
In developing the new IS F, Lexus engineers pursued phenomenal high-speed performance, delivered through a formidable package of advanced racetrack technology. It's evident even when the car is at rest. Advanced aerodynamics are there to minimise wind resistance, allowing high-speed track performance right up to 270 km/h. For maximum "ground effect", F1-inspired composite underbody fairings suck the car down onto the track to enhance traction. Massive air intakes cool the powerful V8 engine, while side air outlet gills help remove heat from the engine bay. At the rear, quadruple trapezoidal exhaust pipes ensure rapid dissipation of exhaust gases and enhance engine breathing.

SCULPTED FOR SPEED.
Its looks are muscular, and every contour has been shaped with speed in mind. The bodywork of the IS F was fine-tuned following extensive wind tunnel research and testing on racetracks around the world. The result is a car that generates the optimum downforce without compromising its highly competitive drag coefficient, offering exhilarating performance both on and off the track. Though speed combined with exceptional handling was our goal, the process of aerodynamic refinement has produced a car of strong lines and arresting beauty. To enhance these looks, and because it is in our nature to pursue perfection, the car is given a deep and lustrous shine by master craftspeople who twice wet sand the bodywork by hand.

POWERFUL, REFINED AND EFFICIENT. A SHORT SUMMARY OF OUR V8 ENGINE.
In Japan, gifts of great importance and value are presented in special envelopes. The V8 engine cover of the new IS F is modelled on such an envelope. Beneath the V8 engine cover of the new IS F is an exemplary expression of Lexus race engineering skills: a new 5.0-litre engine of massive power that incorporates many new high-performance engine technologies.
Engine: 5.0-litre V8 petrol, 32-valve, DOHC Displacement: 4969 cm3 Performance: 311 kW, 505 Nm Max. speed: 270 km/h (electronically limited) 0-100 km/h: 4.8 seconds Combined fuel consumption: 11.4 l/100 km Combined CO2 emissions: 270 g/km

V8 POWER, PERFECTLY BALANCED.
Press the throttle of the IS F and you'll experience an immense surge of power. It's produced by a 5.0-litre V8 engine that can catapult the car from rest to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, then on to a governed top speed of 270 km/h (where permitted). Race-inspired technologies such as high-flow cylinder head and titanium intake valves enable the engine to respond instantly to your commands. Heavy-duty oil and transmission fluid coolers enable the engine to cope with the extremely high temperatures that are generated under high-speed driving conditions, while a scavenger pump ensures oil circulation is maintained even under the extreme g-forces of high-speed cornering. Though exceptionally powerful, this hand-built V8 engine is also very smooth. High rigidity components, the optimum balance of all moving parts, the minimisation of friction and unprecedented precision of assembly all contribute to an engine of remarkable refinement and quietness. Nothing is left to chance in the pursuit of perfection. Each V8 crankshaft is tested for spinning uniformity before assembly and, where necessary, polished by hand to ensure it meets the most exacting standards for running smoothness.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY.
DIRECT FUEL INJECTION The V8 engine in the IS F features our revolutionary new Direct-injection 4-stroke Superior-version (D-4S) twin-injector technology. To generate phenomenal performance right up to the red line, one injector is installed in the combustion chamber and a second in the intake port. This allows the engine to combine the strengths of both direct and port injection, thus maximising power and torque while minimising fuel consumption and emissions. HIGH-FLOW INTAKE PORTS Special high-flow intake ports allow the engine to breathe faster and more deeply. Extensive computer modelling and racetrack testing were carried out to minimise pressure losses on the internal surfaces of the intake ports and to maximise air intake volume.
VARIABLE VALVE TIMINGÂINTELLIGENT ELECTRIC The responsiveness and seemingly endless linear acceleration of the IS F are partly enabled by another world first: Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Electric (VVT-iE). This is an electrically activated variable-intake valve timing system which uses an electric motor to drive the intake camshaft and valves. It responds much faster than conventional hydraulic systems, and delivers vast torque and good fuel economy over a wider range of engine speeds. ADVANCED VALVE MATERIALS The engine's intake valves are machined from titanium, a metal that is widely used in the aerospace industry on account of its strength and lightness. Titanium valves react faster, which means a more powerful and responsive engine. Exhaust valves are made from a nickel-rich, heat-resistant steel alloy, enabling the engine to cope with extremely high exhaust gas temperatures.
MANUAL SHIFTS The 8-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission on the new IS F uses a newly developed torque converter to provide lock-up control for almost the entire range of gears  from 2nd to 8th gear  enabling it to deliver manual-like direct gear shift feel. Gear hold control allows the engine to be used all the way up to the 6,800 rpm red zone. The system achieves one of the world's fastest automatic gearshifts, rivalling the shifting speed of manual transmissions driven by top-class racing drivers.
8-SPEED TRANSMISSION To deliver the V8 engine's enormous power to the road  or racetrack  Lexus engineers developed the world's most advanced 8-speed transmission. Eight gears enable it to offer a combination of close ratios and a wide range of ratios, which translates into higher performance and better fuel efficiency. While a low first gear has been chosen for improved acceleration, the eighth gear is high to improve fuel efficiency at high speeds. For lightness, the transmission case is die-cast in aluminium, and the unit features a newly developed breather system for high-speed circuit driving. To ensure smoothness of operation even during racing gear shifts, the precision and strength of each individual gear tooth has been maximised using advanced microlaser technology.

GEARED FOR ENJOYMENT.
To harness the massive power of the 5.0-litre V8 engine, Lexus engineers created the world's first 8-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission. Select Manual mode and use shift paddles to enjoy ultra-fast sports performance (upshifts are completed in a one tenth of a second), while torque converter lock-up from 2nd to 8th gear gives a manual-like direct gear shift feeling. When downshifting, you'll experience the thrilling sound of the throttle automatically "blipping" between gears to achieve faster synchronisation. Switch to Automatic mode, and the character of the car changes instantly. You'll enjoy gear changes of immaculate precision, with all the smoothness and refinement that are synonymous with a Lexus transmission.

LAP OF LUXURY.
Behind the wheel of the IS F you'll quickly discover that everything is centred around you. Controls fall intuitively to hand and can be operated with lightning speed. The steering wheel is electrically adjustable in all directions and you can store the settings. Shift paddles allow you to make ultra-fast gear changes without taking your hands off the wheel. But if you choose to shift via the leathercovered gearshift, it is located to feel like an extension of your own arm. In front of you, distinctive Optitron instruments with machined aluminium meter rings and LED indicator needles are easy to read in almost all lighting conditions. Here you'll find all the vital performance data you need: revs, oil temperature, gear selected, status of Sports VDIM and speed. All seats have lateral support for high-speed cornering and are upholstered in soft semi-aniline leather (it's perforated to keep you feeling fresh even in the most demanding conditions).

CIRCUIT TRAINING.
Developed and tuned at some of the world's most demanding race circuits, the chassis of the IS F is phenomenally responsive. Indeed, it almost feels as if the car is anticipating your wishes rather than merely responding to them. Advanced electronic power steering is direct and linear in feel, providing you with instant feedback from the road (you have a choice of Sports or Normal settings). The suspension, which features large anti-roll bars, is tuned to feel athletically taut, while ensuring great stability even at very high speeds. At the front, fast response springs have been used to reduce roll on fast corners and nosedive under heavy braking. At the rear, extra stiff dampers ensure stability when braking and accelerating.
