Press the navigation key right. } Before you start This Getting started guide describes two ways of handling files when you are connected to a computer; transferring files (pictures, videos, sounds, themes and so on) and synchronizing files (contacts, appointments, tasks and notes). Regarding transferring music between a computer and your phone, see the Walkman Getting started guide on www.sonyericsson.com/support for details. The Sony Ericsson PC Suite software has to be installed when you want to synchronize files and transfer files using the File Manager application. You can find PC Suite on the CD that comes with your phone or it can be downloaded from www.sonyericsson.com/support. PC Suite for your phone series is designed to work with Windows® 2000 (SP3/SP4) and Windows® XP Home and Professional (SP1/SP2). Other mobile phones may not be supported, see www.sonyericsson.com/support for details. 2 February 2007 Getting started Connecting with a computer Before you transfer files or synchronize with your computer, check that you have the following: · · · · · A connection between your phone and the computer. Use the USB cable or use infrared. PC Suite installed % 3 Installing PC Suite. At least 500 MB free hard disk space. Internet Explorer 5.0 or later has to be installed. Windows 2000 (SP3/SP4): 128 MB RAM, 500 MHz. Windows XP (SP1/SP2): 256 MB RAM, 500 MHz. If you only want to use Windows® Explorer to transfer files, there is no need to install PC Suite. Overview of instructions Install PC Suite % 3 Installing PC Suite Connect the phone and the computer % 4 Connecting with a computer Transfer or synchronize files % 6 Transferring files or % 7 Synchronizing Installing PC Suite You can find PC Suite on the CD that comes with your phone or you can download it from www.sonyericsson.com/support. Before installing any new or updated version of PC Suite, all previous programs related to phone communication has to be uninstalled. We recommended that you uninstall from the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (Windows Explorer). To install PC Suite from the CD 1. Insert the CD that came with your phone. The CD should start automatically. If the installation program does not start, use this procedure on your computer: click Start and select Run..., write D:/start.exe and click OK (D: is the CD drive letter on the system). 2. Select a language. 3. Click Install in the PC Suite section. 4. Click Next to continue the installation. 5. Read and accept the licence agreement. Click Next. 6. Select Complete as setup type. Click Next. 7. Click Install to begin the installation. 8. In your Web browser, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support. Select a region and country. Select a phone from the list or enter your phone model in the text field. Select Software downloads. Select Sony Ericsson PC Suite X.X.X under PC Suite. Select Download and save the file to your computer. Double-click the downloaded PC Suite file. Select language. Click Install in the PC Suite section. Click Next to continue the installation. Read and accept the licence agreement. Click Next. Select Complete as setup type. Click Next. Click Install to begin the installation. Click Finish to exit the wizard. Connecting with a computer To transfer or synchronize files, you need to connect your phone and the computer. You can do this using the USB cable or the infrared port. Connecting using the USB cable Depending on the purpose, File transfer or Phone mode has to be selected in your phone when connecting the USB cable. When your phone is on, one of these two options pops up in the phone as soon as you connect the USB cable. · Phone mode ­ Select this option in your phone to use the applications included in PC Suite. · File transfer ­ Select this option to use Windows Explorer to transfer files. Application in PC Suite: Synchronize now, Sync Manager File Manager Phone status: Phone mode Phone mode Used for: Synchronizing with a computer Transfer files Do not disconnect the USB cable when transferring files or synchronizing as this may harm the phone memory or the Memory Stick MicroTM (M2TM). For safe disconnection of the USB cable, right-click the Removable Disk icon in Windows Explorer and select Eject. A message appears in your phone when it is safe to disconnect the cable from the phone. 4 February 2007 Getting started Connecting with a computer To connect using the USB cable when you want to use PC Suite applications Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Phone: Select Phone mode. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed automatically. The Phone Connection Wizard appears. 5. In the Phone Connection Wizard, click Next to continue. 6. Enter a name for your phone in the text field. 7. Click Finish to close the wizard. 1. 2. 3. 4. To connect using the USB cable when you want to use Windows® Explorer 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Computer: If Found New Hardware Wizard appears, click Cancel to exit the wizard. Phone: Select File transfer. Wait for your phone to prepare for file transfer. Computer: Your phone memory and Memory Stick MicroTM (M2TM) are added as removable disks in Windows Explorer. 7. Computer: If you receive a question about what you want to do with the files on the removable disks (your phone memory and memory card), select Take no action. See the manufacturer's product documentation. To connect the phone to a computer using the infrared port 1. Phone: Turn on infrared: From standby select Menu } Settings } Connectivity } Infrared port } On. 2. Computer: If necessary, activate the infrared port. 5 February 2007 Getting started Connecting with a computer 3. Place your phone with a maximum distance of 20 cm next to the computer so that the infrared ports are facing each other. 4. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed automatically. The Phone Connection Wizard appears. 5. In the Phone Connection Wizard, click Next to continue. 6. Enter a name for your phone in the text field. 7. Click Finish to close the wizard. The procedures, terms and application names may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the infrared device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturer's product documentation. To turn off infrared · From standby select Menu } Settings } Connectivity } Infrared port } Off. Transferring files You can transfer your phone files between your phone and your computer. When the files have been transferred to a computer, you can delete these files in your phone, to free memory. Pictures, videos, sounds, themes, Web pages, games, applications and other files are saved in separate folders in File manager. You can send, browse, move, copy and edit the files. Files that your phone cannot recognize are saved in the Other folder % 11 Formats. Do not disconnect the USB cable when transferring files as this may harm the phone memory or the memory card. For safe disconnection of the USB cable, right-click the Removable Disk icon in Windows Explorer and select Eject. A message appears in your phone when it is safe to disconnect the cable from the phone. To transfer files using the File Manager application in PC Suite 1. Connect your phone and computer and select Phone mode in your phone. % 4 Connecting with a computer. 2. Double-click the Sony Ericsson File Manager icon on the computer desktop. 3. In the Sony Ericsson File Manager window, double-click the icon representing your phone to view the phone memory folder or the memory card folder. 4. Select the file you want to transfer. (Select several files by pressing Shift or Ctrl and clicking the files.) 5. Copy and paste your file, or drag and drop it, into the desired folder on your computer or in your phone. To transfer files using Windows® Explorer 1. Connect your phone and computer and select File transfer in your phone. % 4 Connecting with a computer. 2. Select the file you want to transfer. (Select several files by pressing Shift or Ctrl and clicking the files.) 3. Copy and paste your file, or drag and drop it, into the desired folder on your computer or in your phone. 6 February 2007 Getting started Connecting with a computer Copyright-protected files Items that are downloaded, or received using one of the available transfer methods, may be copyrightprotected by DRM (Digital Rights Management). Such items normally have a key icon in front of the file name. If a file is protected, you may not be able to copy, send or transfer that file. You can see if a file is copyright-protected, and view other information about the file, in your phone. To view copyright information for a file 1. From standby select Menu } File manager and open a folder. 2. Scroll to a file and select More } Information. If the file is copyright-protected, Limited is displayed. If not, Unlimited is displayed. Synchronizing You can synchronize your phone contacts, appointments, tasks and notes with similar programs in a computer using the USB cable or the infrared port. You cannot run synchronization programs for other products at the same time as you perform this synchronization. PC Suite is used during the synchronization process and two helpful applications assist you in PC Suite; Sync Manager and Phone Monitor. · Sync Manager ­ synchronization program for your phone and computer. · Phone Monitor ­ phone connection program that identifies phone models and capabilities. % 8 Phone Monitor options. Sync Manager for your phone series is designed to work with the following PIM (Personal Information Manager) applications: · · · · · · · Windows® Address Book Outlook® 2000 SR-1 or higher Outlook® 2002 Outlook® 2003 Lotus Notes 5 Lotus Notes 6 Lotus Notes 6.5 To synchronize 1. Connect your phone and computer. % 4 Connecting with a computer. 2. Start your Personal Information Manager (PIM) program: Windows Address Book, Outlook 2000 SR-1 or higher, Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003, Lotus Notes 5, Lotus Notes 6 or Lotus Notes 6.5. 3. Double-click the Sony Ericsson PC Suite icon on the desktop (or click Start/Programs/Sony Ericsson/ Sony Ericsson PC Suite). 4. In PC Suite, click Synchronise Now. 7 February 2007 Getting started Connecting with a computer 5. The first time you start a synchronization, the Synchronization Settings Wizard appears. 6. Click Next to continue. 7. Select the computer application that you want to synchronize with. Click Next. 8. Select the categories that you want to synchronize. Click Next. 9. If you want to synchronize contacts saved on your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, they must be transferred to your phone memory before synchronizing. To transfer contacts from the SIM card to the phone memory 1. From standby select Menu } Contacts } Options } Advanced } Copy from SIM. 2. Select Copy all or Copy a number. 3. Select Yes. Settings and options Phone Monitor options Use the Phone Monitor options to see information about phones, SIM cards, COM ports and where the program is installed. You can also select if you want the Phone Monitor icon to be shown and whether to synchronize the computer and phone clocks. To change Phone Monitor options · In PC Suite, click Tools and select Phone Monitor Options... to change the following options: · Mobile phones ­ shows a list of phones previously connected to your computer. · SIM cards ­ shows a list of SIM cards previously recognized by your computer. · COM ports ­ shows the COM ports detected on your computer. The list includes virtual ports. · Advanced ­ shows the version and where the program is installed. Under Components, files that were installed during installation and their individual versions are shown. · Setup ­ select how you want the Phone Monitor icon to be displayed. Select whether you want the computer and phone clocks to be synchronized. Sync Manager settings The Sync Manager settings determine what information will be synchronized and when the synchronization will occur. You can choose to synchronize contacts, appointments, tasks and notes. The settings are only available when your phone is connected to the computer. To change Sync Manager settings · In Sync Manager, click Settings... to edit the following settings: · Conflict Policy ­ select how to handle Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes when the same item has been modified both in your phone and on your computer since the last synchronization. · Delete Policy ­ select how to handle items that have been deleted in your phone since the last synchronization. To start an advanced synchronization, and make sure that all saved items in your computer are the same as the items in your phone. See below for possible solutions. Troubleshooting USB connection If you experience problems with the USB connection, this section offers some basic solutions. To solve USB connection problems 1. Check that the cable is properly connected to your phone and to your computer. 2. Make sure that your phone is turned on. 3. Check which COM port is used for the cable. The USB cable uses a "virtual" COM port. When the cable is connected, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) item in the list of devices. Make a note of the COM port number within parenthesis after the item Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Device Management. 4. Open Sony Ericsson PC Suite and click Tools/Phone Monitor Options.../Com Ports. Enable the COM port you identified in step 3. 5. Restart the computer without disconnecting the cable or turning off your phone and try to connect again. To set the COM port speed 1. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT) and doubleclick the item Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Device Management. 2. Select Port Settings and set the speed to no higher than 115 200 bps. 3. Try to connect again. Troubleshooting infrared connection If you experience problems with the infrared connection, this section offers some basic solutions. To solve infrared connection problems 1. Check that your phone is aligned with the infrared port on your computer. 2. Check that the infrared port is turned on in your phone. You should see an infrared icon on the phone screen and one in the computer taskbar. To set the infrared port speed 1. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Infrared devices. Right-click the infrared port in use and select Properties. 2. Select Advanced/Maximize connect rate and set the value to no higher than 115 200 bps. 3. Try to connect again. 10 February 2007 Getting started Connecting with a computer Problem finding transferred files Make sure you have put your files in the correct folder in your phone. For example, put images in the Image folder, put sound files in the Sounds folder. Files that are placed in the wrong folder may not be visible in your phone. For example, you may not be able to listen to MP3 tracks in the Walkman® player if they are not placed correctly. You cannot view the transferred files in your phone until you have removed the USB cable from the phone. Virus protection When synchronizing, computer virus protection programs may give a warning that a potential virus is trying to access saved e-mail addresses. Read the dialogue and select Yes to continue synchronizing or No to cancel. For more information, see virus protection help or documentation.
