User guide INTELLINET 522991 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Detailed instructions for use are in the User's Guide. Server Appliance and NAS FAQ
Q: Why can I not see the appliance/NAS on the network neighborhood? A: Make sure that you have assigned the appliance/NAS to the same workgroup name as the computers that will access the shares. You can always search for the appliance/NAS (using either the unit name or IP address) in the network neighborhood. After you've found the unit, map it to a shortcut on your desktop. This will make future access quicker. Q: WinME/98/SE machine can see the appliance/NAS in their network neighborhood but cannot access the appliance/NAS. A: This is probably due to the windows user login name being different than the user name in the appliance. This must match for WinME/98/SE as they do not have a network username/password prompt. Q: Win2000 and WinXP cannot see the appliance/NAS under the network places but other systems can. A: Windows networking protocols take time to renew the computer names. This could take up to half a day in cases. Try searching for the appliance/NAS name and/or IP address under the network neighborhood. You should be able to find the unit if everything else is correct. If this does not find the unit, your settings may not be correct. Usually you can map the drive to the desktop to solve this issue in the future where Windows looses the network name for some reason. Q: I am unable to get my Linux Server to attach to the appliance/NAS. A: Make sure to enable NFS under the advance NAS menu. Add a NFS mapping rule under that. Enter the Remote UID -- usually 0 for the root user. Enter the remote IP as your server IP with ' / 24 '. The /24 is the net mask (same as 255.255.255.0). Then you can use the Linux mount command to mount the unit on the server. The security rules are the same as your mapping user in our unit. Example mounting command: root> mount 192.168.0.1:/shared /mnt/nas Q: How many users/groups can I create and how many can access the unit concurrently? A: You can add as many users/groups as you want. It will keep scrolling down once you pass the box limit. As for concurrent users, there is no hard coded limit. Your limit will be performance. Again, this device is meant for small offices/workgroups up to about 20 people depending on your performance requirements. Q: How do I access the shared folders without a username and password? A: Map the drive using the Windows neighborhood and have the system remember the password and reconnect at startup. Q: Do you support double byte file names (Chinese/Japanese)? A: Yes we do for Windows 2K/XP.
Q: Do you support wireless? A: You can use our device today in a wireless network by connecting an access point to one of the LAN ports. Your NAS functions will work as any other networked computer/server on your network. Q: How do I access the shared folders in a Windows domain? A: Set the workgroup name as the domain name. When creating users, do not assign passwords. Currently we do not support domain login and therefore cannot verify passwords in a domain. Q: Does the IPSEC functionality support connecting to NAT-T endpoints? (ESP over UDP 4500) A: Our IPSEC supports connections over public IPs only. Q: Can users assign a fixed IP to a device on the network? A: YES...The bes way is done through proper network planning. Under DHCP Server settings, the ASAP defaults to assigning IPs 172.16.1.2 through 172.16.1.250...So depending on how many fixed IP devices you have, you can assign the device to an IP of 172.16.1.251 (through 254) as these IPs will not be handed out by the ASAP. If you have more devices or want a different IP range, then all thats needed is to modify the range that the ASAP hands out so it does not hand out an IP that you are using. Typical offices set the DHCP Server to assign out IPs from 30 through 200 for users. IPs 1-29 are for fixed IP servers and 201 and above are reserved for special uses.... Q: My cable modem connection is not working. A: Make sure that your appliance is set to DHCP client under Basic Settings. After the settings are saved, power down and UNPLUG your cable modem and the appliance. Wait for 2 minutes. Plug in and turn on the cable modem and wait for a link to be established. Turn on the appliance. After the appliance starts, about 45 seconds, check to see if you have a connection. If no, please contact technical support. Q: I cannot see folders when using a browser to access the FTP. A: You must enable FTP folder browsing in your browser. In IE, this is located in the Advanced tab of the Internet Options menu. Q: I can see the shared folders in my browser's FTP mode, but cannot access them. A: Make sure to log in as a valid user under your browser's "File->Login As..." menus. Q: How can I allow Anonymous FTP access? A: Set the shared folder to allow access to the guest account.
Performance Tips for ASAP: 1. Disable all Denial of Service (DoS) options. This firewall feature is really only used for business and/or if you are running FTP/Web Servers behind your firewall. You may just want to leave on the detect Port Scan and IP spoofing as these are the two most common hacking methods. 2. Disable IP/URL Filtering. 3. Disable all file transfer protocols not in use. If you are only using PCs, disable Apple File Sharing and NFS. 4. Disable FTP server if not using. 5. Disable remote administration if not used. In general, disable all features not being used and/or enable only the features that you need to use. This help the overall performance as the unit will not have to process so many things. Performance Tips for NAS: 1. Disable all file transfer protocols not in use. If you are only using PCs, disable Apple File Sharing and NFS. 2. Disable FTP server if not using.
