DI-614+ 2.4GHz Wireless Router DWL-650+ Wireless Cardbus Adapter CD-ROM (containing Manual and Warranty) Ethernet (CAT5 UTP/Straight Through) Cable 5V DC Power Adapter If any of the above items are missing, please contact your reseller. Part No. IG-BDWL915+. 05052003 1 Installation Map The diagram shown below illustrates a typical installation of this kit. Please follow the instructions shown on the following page to install your kit successfully. 2 Broadband Internet Connection If you purchased this kit to share your high speed Internet connection with your laptop and other computers, you must have either an Ethernet-based Cable or DSL modem with an established Internet account from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Installing the DWL-650+ Section 2 of this Installation Guide will walk you through the installation of the DWL-650+ on your laptop computer. Once the DWL-650+ is installed you will be able to communicate with other 802.11b devices on your network. You must have at least the following to use the DWL-650+: - A laptop computer with an available 32-bit Cardbus slot - At least a 300MHz processor and 32MB of memory - Cardbus Controller properly installed and working in the laptop computer Installing the DI-614+ Section 3 of this Installation Guide will walk you through the installation and configuration of the DI-614+ as a Wireless Router to allow you to access other 802.11b networked computers and the Internet. You must have at least the following to configure the DI-614+: - Internet Explorer 6.x or later - Netscape Navigator 6.x or later - Equivalent Java enabled Web Browser. 3 Installing the DWL-650+ Turn on the computer and Insert the D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+ Driver CD in the CD-ROM drive. The step-by-step instructions that follow are shown in Windows XP. The steps and screens are similar for the other Windows operating systems. Do NOT install the DWL-650+ Cardbus Adapter into your computer before installing the driver software . The Installation Screen will appear. Click Install Driver /PC Utility If the CD Autorun function on your computer does not automatically start, go to Start > Run and type "D:\Setup.exe". If it does start, proceed to the next screen. Type "D:\Setup.exe" The letter "D" represents the letter of the CD-ROM drive. Your CDROM drive may be a different drive letter. Click OK Click OK 4 Click Next Select No, I will restart my computer later Click Finish Shut down your laptop Insert the DWL-650+ Wireless Cardbus Adapter into the Cardbus Slot in your Laptop. A. Make sure to turn off the laptop computer. B. Locate the Cardbus slot on your laptop computer. C. Gently insert the DWL-650+ into the Cardbus slot in your laptop computer (as shown). 5 Built-in Antenna Used to wirelessly connect to 802.11b (AirPlus, Air) networks. 32-bit connector This is the connector that fits into the Cardbus slot of your laptop Power LED Lights to indicate that the DWL-650+ is properly inserted. Link/Activity LED Blinks when data is being transmitted through the wireless connection. Restart your laptop Note: Please do not remove the driver CD until the DWL-650+ installation is complete! When you restart your computer this Found New Hardware Wizard (Windows XP) screen will appear: Select Install the software automatically (Recommended) Click Next 6 For Windows XP: This Hardware Installation alert screen may appear after the computer restarts. Click Continue Anyway to finalize the installation (The D-Link driver software for this device is undergoing Windows Logo testing. Microsoft certification is pending.) For Windows 2000, this Digital Signature Not Found screen may appear after your computer restarts. Click Yes to finalize the installation For Windows Me and 98SE, after your computer restarts, this System Settings Change screen may appear. Click Yes to finalize the installation Click Finish DWL-650+ Installation is Complete! 7 Connecting The DI-614+ Wireless Router To Your Network A. First, connect the power adapter to the receptor at the back panel of the DI-614+ and then plug the other end of the power adapter to a wall outlet or power strip. The Power LED will turn ON to indicate proper operation. B. 1. Power off your Cable or DSL modem; some devices may not have a on/off switch and will require you to unplug the power adapter. Now, the DI-614+ should be powered on and the Cable / DSL modem should be turned off. 2. Cable / DSL modem (Power Off) ­ DI-614+ (Power On) Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port located on the Cable / DSL modem. After the Ethernet cable is securely connected, power on the Cable / DSL modem by turning on the unit or plugging in the power adapter. 3. Cable / DSL modem (Power On) ­ DI-614+ (Power On) Insert the other end of the Ethernet cable to the WAN PORT on the back panel of the DI-614+. The WAN LED light will illuminate to indicate proper connection. If the WAN LED is not illuminated, please go back to step B1 and repeat the instructions. C. Insert an Ethernet cable to LAN port 1 on the back panel of the DI-614+ and an available Ethernet port on the network adapter in the computer you will use to configure the DI-614+. The LED light for LAN Port 1 will illuminate to indicate proper connection. (Note: The LAN Ports on the DI-614+ are Auto-MDI/MDIX. Meaning you can use a straight-through or crossover-Ethernet cable to the LAN Ports.) D. Computers equipped with 802.11b wireless adapters will be able to connect to the DI-614+. The DWL-650+ AirPlus Wireless Cardbus Adapter and the DWL520+ AirPlus Wireless PCI Adapter will be able to connect out of the box with the router using their default wireless settings. Restart Your Computer 8 D. Antennas Used to wirelessly connect to 802.11b adapters. C. LAN PORTS These are the connections for Ethernet cables to Ethernet enabled computers. B. WAN PORT Connect an Ethernet cable to the Cable/DSL modem. Reset Button Pressing this button restores the Router to its original factory default settings. A. Receptor for Power Adapter. Your Installation is Complete! After you've continued in Windows XP (or after the computer restarts in the other Windows operating systems), the D-Link AirPlus DWL650+ Configuration Utility will automatically start and the utility icon will appear in the bottom right hand corner of the desktop screen (systray). If this icon appears GREEN, then you have successfully installed the DWL-650+, are connected to a wireless network and are ready to communicate! Click Yes to finalize the installation If the utility icon does not appear, double-click the shortcut icon that has appeared on your desktop For Windows XP, if you wish to use the D-Link AirPlus Utility, please refer to Appendix B. 9 DWL-650+ Using The Setup Wizard for the DI-614+ Please follow the steps below to configure your Broadband connection settings. Open your Web browser and type "http://192.168.0.1" into the URL address box. Then press the Enter or Return key. The logon pop-up screen will appear. Type "admin" for the username and leave the password field blank. Click OK Once you have logged in, the Home screen will appear. Click Run Wizard 10 The Setup Wizard (continued) You will see the following screens Click Next Set up your new password. You have the option to establish a password. Click Next Choose your time zone from the drop down list. Click Next 11 The Setup Wizard (continued) A this point, the setup wizard will try to auto-detect your Internet connection type. If you have a Dynamic or PPPoE connection, you will be brought to the corresponding page. Otherwise, you will see the following screen: Select one of these settings. If you are unsure of which setting to select, please contact your Internet Service Provider. Click Next If you selected Dynamic IP Address, this screen will appear: (Used mainly for Cable Internet service.) Click the "Clone MAC Address" button to automatically copy the MAC address of the network adapter in your computer. You can also manually type in the MAC address. Click Next 12 Please continue to Wireless Setup. This setup should be done on the computer that is registered on the ISP's network. The Setup Wizard (continued) If your ISP requires a Static IP Address, and this option is selected, then this screen will appear: Enter the IP Address information in the appropriate fields as originally provided to you by your ISP. You will need to complete all the required fields. Click Next Please continue to Wireless Setup. If your ISP uses PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet), and this option is selected, then this screen will appear: (Used mainly for DSL Internet service.) Enter in the Username and Password provided to you by your ISP. Please be sure to remove any existing PPPoE client software installed on your computers. Click Next Please continue to Wireless Setup. 13 The Setup Wizard (continued) The default settings are: SSID = default Channel = 6 Wireless Setup The DI-614+ will connect with the DWL-650+ right out of the box, using the default settings. If you choose to change the settings, make sure that the Encryption and SSID settings are the same for both the DI-614+ and any wireless adapter. Click Next If you wish to use encryption for your 802.11b network, the DI-614+ is capable of three levels of wireless encryption 64-bit, 128-bit, and 256-bit. By default the encryption is disabled. You can change the encryption settings for more secure wireless communication. Click Next 14 Your Setup is Complete! Click Restart Click Close You will be returned to the Home tab. Click to Exit Then relaunch your Web browser (i.e., Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator), to link to your favorite Web site to test your Internet connection. For additional settings or information, refer to the Advanced, Tools, or Status tabs on the webmanagement interface; or to the Manual located on the CD. Test Internet Connection. 15 APPENDIX A To connect to the network, make sure the network adapter in your computer is configured properly. Here's how to configure the network adapter to obtain an IP address automatically for the DI-614+ Wireless Router. For Microsoft Windows XP: Go to Start > right click on My Network Places > select Properties > Double-click on the Network Connection associated with the Ethernet adapter (i.e., D-Link DFE-530TX+). Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Click Properties Select Obtain an IP address automatically Click OK Restart your computer (if necessary) 16 APPENDIX B For Windows XP, if you wish to use the DWL-650+ AirPlus Utility, please use the following steps. Click the XP Networking icon to access the Zero Configuration Wireless Settings Click Advanced Uncheck Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings. Click OK 17 Troubleshooting Q1: I cannot connect to the DI-614+. A: Make sure that the SSID and the Encryption key (if any) on the DWL-650+ Cardbus Adapter is exactly the same as the SSID and the Encryption key (if any) on the DI614+. (Please refer to the manuals on the included CD-ROM for more information on enabling Encryption and assigning SSIDs.) Q2: The DWL-650+ Power and Link lights are not on. A: Check to see if the DWL-650+ Cardbus Adapter is firmly inserted in the Cardbus slot of your laptop computer. Q3: I am unable to access the Internet using the DWL-650+. A1: Check that the LED indicators for the broadband modem are indicating normal activity. If not, there may be a problem with the broadband connection. A2: Check that the LED indicators on the DI-614+ are functioning properly. If not, check that the AC power and Ethernet cables are firmly connected. A3: Check that the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings are correctly entered for the DWL-650+ in that specific wireless network. Q4: I forgot my Encryption key. A: Reset the DI-614+ to its factory default settings and restore the DWL-650+ Wireless Cardbus Adapter to the factory default settings. 18 Notes 19 Technical Support You can find software updates and user documentation on the D-Link website.
