Pictures, videos, sounds, themes, Web pages, games, applications and other files are saved in your phone. The various files are divided into separate folders in the File manager, to make it easier for you to organize them. You can browse, move, copy and edit the files saved in your phone memory and on the Memory Stick Duo. You can also browse, move, copy and edit the files from a computer, and exchange files between your phone or Memory Stick Duo and a computer. For this you need a cable connection, or a Bluetooth or infrared connection (as long as your phone holds these capabilities). % } Managing files in your phone and on the Memory Stick Duo Your phone files are automatically stored in the folders Pictures, Videos, Sounds, Themes, Web pages Games, Applications and Other, depending on their format. Files that the phone cannot recognize are saved in the Other folder. Pictures that you take with the camera are automatically saved in the Camera pictures subfolder, in the Pictures folder. Your video clips are saved in the Cam. video clips subfolder, in the Videos folder. You can create your own subfolders to which you can move your saved files. You can also edit pictures in your phone, for more information see the Getting started guide for your Camera & Video recorder or the User guide for your phone model. To create a subfolder 1. } File manager, open a folder and select a file. 2. } More } New folder and enter a name for the folder. 3. } OK to save the folder. 3 March 2005 Getting started Managing files To move a file to a folder 1. } File manager and open a folder. 2. Scroll to a file, for example, a picture that you want to move } More } Manage files } Move to folder. 3. Select the folder you want to move the file to, or } New folder and name the folder } OK. To delete a file or a folder Scroll to the file or folder you want to delete and then press To select several files 1. } File manager and select a file } More } Mark several. 2. Scroll and select more files by pressing Mark or Unmark. . File information Items that are downloaded, or received using the infrared port, a cable connection or text or picture messages may be copyright-protected by DRM, Digital Rights Management. If a file is protected, you may not be able to copy, send or transfer that file. You can see if a file is copyright-protected, and view other information about the file, in your phone. To view information for a file 1. } File manager and select a folder. 2. Scroll to a file } More } Information. Managing files using a computer Quick access to the Memory Stick Duo on your computer You can browse and manage the files on the Memory Stick Duo using a computer connected to your phone via the USB cable. To browse files on the Memory Stick Duo via the USB cable 1. Insert the CD that came with your phone. If the PC Suite installation window opens, simply close it as it is not needed here. 2. Connect the USB cable to a USB port on the computer and to the phone. The "Found New Hardware Wizards" starts. 3. Click Install the software automatically and click Next. 4. The wizard should find the USB software driver automatically. Click Finish. 5. Continue to % 11 Memory Stick Duo files. Before you start managing files using a computer Before you can begin managing the files of your phone memory or the Memory Stick Duo using a computer, it is important to check you have the following: You need to establish a connection between your phone and the computer. For this you need a USB cable, an infrared device or a Bluetooth device (as long as your phone holds these capabilities). 4 March 2005 Getting started Managing files The USB cable requires software drivers that you find on the CD that comes with your phone. You can also download the drivers at www.SonyEricsson.com/support. If you want to manage the files stored in the phone memory, using a computer connected via USB, infrared or Bluetooth, you need the Sony Ericsson File Manager software that you find on the CD that comes with your phone. If you want to manage the files saved on the Memory Stick Duo, using a computer connected to the phone via USB, infrared or Bluetooth, the Sony Ericsson File Manager software is not required. To manage the files on the Memory Stick Duo using the USB cable, you do not need the Sony Ericsson File Manager software. You can also download the Sony Ericsson File Manager software at www.SonyEricsson.com/support. The software is designed to work with Windows® ME, Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro. The general system requirements are: At least 120 MB free hard disk space. · Windows ME: 64 MB RAM, 200 MHz · Windows 2000 with SP3: 64 MB RAM, 266 MHz · Windows XP Home: 128 MB RAM, 300 MHz · Windows XP Pro: 128 MB RAM, 300 MHz Overview of instructions Install the File manager software · Use the CD that comes with the phone, % 6 Install from the CD. - or · Download from the Web, % 6 Download from the Web and install. Managing the files of your phone using a computer % 10 Managing files using a computer. 5 March 2005 Getting started Managing files Installing the File Manager software To be able to transfer files between the phone memory and your computer you need to install the Sony Ericsson File Manager software on your computer. Install from the CD You will find the File Manager software on the CD that comes with your phone. Just insert the CD into the computer and follow the instructions to install the PC Suite (of which the File Manager is part). The software can be installed on a computer running Windows® ME, Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro. To install the File Manager from the CD 1. Insert the CD that came with the phone. The CD should start automatically. 2. Select language and click OK. 3. Click Install PC Suite now and follow the instructions on the screen. 4. When the installation is complete the Sony Ericsson File Manager icon appears on your desktop. - or - Download from the Web and install The File Manager software can be downloaded from www.SonyEricsson.com/support.The software can be installed on a computer running Windows® ME, Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro. To download the latest version of the File Manager software 1. In your internet browser, go to www.SonyEricsson.com/support. 2. Select a region and country or "Global support area". 3. Enter the product name: phone model. 4. Select Software/Applications and follow the File Manager download instructions. To install the File Manager 1. Double-click on the downloaded File Manager file. 2. If the installation does not start automatically, Click Start/Run.../Browse and select the Start program (FileManager_version.exe). Click OK to start the program. 3. Now the files you need will be extracted. Click Next. 4. When the installation has started, select the language you prefer, and click OK. 5. Click Next and follow the instructions in the wizard. 6. When the installation is complete the Sony Ericsson File Manager icon appears on your desktop. 6 March 2005 Getting started Managing files Connecting via the USB cable The Sony Ericsson USB cable that comes with the phone can be used to connect a computer to your phone. You first have to install the USB drivers. You do this by either: · installing them from the Sony Ericsson CD that came with your phone. - or · downloading the latest version of the drivers from www.SonyEricsson.com/support. Install the USB cable drivers from the CD To install the USB cable drivers when you have the CD 1. Insert the CD that came with your phone. If the PC Suite installation window opens, simply close it as it is not needed here. 2. Connect the USB cable to a USB port on the computer and to the phone. 3. The "Found New Hardware Wizards" starts. Click Install the software automatically and click Next. 4. The wizard should find the software drivers automatically. Click Finish. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all drivers are installed (typically four times). 6. To verify that the USB drivers have been installed, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/ Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT), and check that the drivers "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Device Management" and "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC OBEX Interface" are in the list. Also, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus and check that the driver "Sony Ericsson (phone model)" is in the list. - or - Download and install the USB cable drivers from the Web To download the software driver for the USB cable 1. In your Internet browser, go to www.SonyEricsson.com/support. 2. Select a region and country. 3. Enter the product name: phone model. Select Software/Drivers and scripts and follow the download instructions on the page. 4. Use the Windows Explorer to locate the downloaded file and extract its contents. Make a note of the location of the extracted files. 7 March 2005 Getting started Managing files To install the software drivers for your USB cable when you have downloaded the driver 1. Make sure you have downloaded the drivers from www.SonyEricsson.com/support as described in "To download the software driver for the USB cable" on page 7. 2. Connect the USB cable to a USB port on the computer and to the phone. 3. The "Found New Hardware Wizards" starts. Select the option Install from a list or specific location and click Next. 4. Click Browse... · To install the driver that you downloaded, browse to the directory where you extracted the downloaded file, click OK. 5. Click Finish in the final wizard window. 6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until all drivers are installed (typically four times). 7. Click OK. 8. To verify that the USB drivers have been installed, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/ Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT), and check that the drivers "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Device Management" and "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC OBEX Interface" are in the list. Also, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus and check that the driver "Sony Ericsson (phone model)" is in the list. Connecting via infrared The infrared device in the computer must be installed (see the manufacturer's product documentation) and working properly before you start the installation procedures below. The procedures, terms, application names, and so on, may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the infrared device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturer's product documentation. To connect your phone to a computer via the infrared port 1. Phone: } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Infrared port } On. The infrared icon appears on the phone's screen. 2. Place the phone in front of the computer's infrared port. Infrared ports must be facing each other at a distance of up to 20 cm when used. 3. Wait for the phone and computer to connect via infrared. This can take a short while. When connected, the infrared icon appears in the taskbar, near the clock, at the bottom of the computer screen. 4. Computer: The first time you connect, check or enter the following settings: · Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Infrared devices. · Right-click the infrared port in use. · Select Advanced/Maximize connect rate and set the value to no higher than 115 200 bps, click OK, close the Device Manager window and click OK. 8 March 2005 Getting started Managing files Connecting via BluetoothTM To connect your phone to a computer using BluetoothTM wireless technology you first need to add your computer to your phone's list of Bluetooth devices. This procedure may be called pairing or bonding in other product documentation. The Bluetooth device in the computer must be turned on (see the manufacturer's product documentation) and working properly before you start the installation procedures below. When the computer is added to the list of Bluetooth devices in the phone, the computer and phone automatically connect when they are within about 10 m range from each other and the phone's Bluetooth function is turned on. The procedures, terms, application names, and so on, may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the Bluetooth device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturer's product documentation. To connect your phone to a computer via Bluetooth. 1. Phone: } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Bluetooth } Phone name. Enter a name that identifies your phone uniquely to other Bluetooth devices. 2. } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Bluetooth } Visibility } Show phone. 3. } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Bluetooth } Turn on. The Bluetooth icon appears on the phone's screen. 4. Computer: Open the Bluetooth software and search for Bluetooth devices. One icon appears for each Bluetooth device found. 5. Right-click the icon with your phone's name. In the menu that pops up, select the menu item for pairing/bonding. 6. In the dialog you enter a code of your choice, which will be the "password" for the computer to get access to the Bluetooth services in the phone. If the dialog does not ask for a code, enter 0000. Click OK. A dialog appears in your phone after a few seconds. Make sure to enter a code that is secure, so that it is not available to anyone else. 7. Phone: In a dialog you are asked if you want to add the computer to "My devices". }Yes. 8. Enter the code you entered in step 6 above and } OK. If the dialog in step 6 above did not ask for a code, enter 0000. 9. Computer: The phone icon should now be marked, for example with a check mark in a check box, to show that the phone now can be automatically recognized when Bluetooth is turned on and the phone and the computer are within range from each other. Your phone and computer should now be connected via Bluetooth, and you are ready to begin synchronization. In some Bluetooth software, you will have to activate the serial port dedicated to the phone. Go to My Bluetooth places, right-click your phone's icon in the window where all found Bluetooth devices are shown, and select a "COM port activation" item in the popup menu. This will configure the serial port with the phone. 9 March 2005 Getting started Managing files Managing files using a computer You can move the files in your phone or on the Memory Stick Duo to your computer. Phone memory files You can view all the predefined folders in the phone memory on a computer. When you move a file from a computer to your phone memory, each folder can contain a range of file formats. For example an MP3 file can be transferred to the Sounds folder. Files that the phone cannot recognize can be saved in the Other folder. You cannot create subfolders from a computer. To browse the phone memory from a computer 1. Connect your phone and computer. 2. Double click the Sony Ericsson File Manager icon on the desktop of your computer. Now the Sony Ericsson File Manager window opens. 3. When you connect your phone and a computer using the USB cable, the Memory Stick Duo of your phone is added as a removable disk in Windows Explorer. A dialog box in the computer asks you to make a choice what do with files on the removable disk (your phone). Select Take no action in the dialog box, to continue using the Sony Ericsson File Manager. 4. The first time you connect your phone to a computer, a phone connection wizard starts to identify the phone model and capabilities for the Mobile Phone Monitor. A yellow check mark, in the Status bar down to the right of the computer screen, begins flashing. Enter information, click Next and Finish. When connection is established, the check mark turns green. 5. In the Sony Ericsson File Manager window, double click the icon representing your phone to view the Phone Memory folders. To transfer files between your phone and your computer 1. Find the file you wish to transfer, and select it. 2. Then either copy your file and paste it, or drag and drop it into the desired folder on your computer or in your phone. To transfer several files 1. Find the files you wish to transfer, and select all of them by pressing Shift or Ctrl and clicking the files. 2. Then either copy and paste your files, or drag and drop them into the desired folder on your computer or in your phone. When the files have been transferred to a computer, you can delete these files in your phone, to free memory. 10 March 2005 Getting started Managing files Memory Stick Duo files You can view all the predefined folders on the Memory Stick Duo using Windows Explorer on a computer. When you connect your phone to a computer via the USB cable, the Memory Stick Duo appears as a removable disk drive in Windows Explorer. Memory Stick Duo folders in Windows Explorer In Windows Explorer you should use the folders under Removable Disk (drive:)\MSSEMC\Media files (when connected using USB) and Phone Memory\Memory Stick\MSSEMC\Media files (when connected using infrared or Bluetooth). When you move a file from a computer to the Memory Stick Duo, do not forget that each folder can only contain certain kinds of file formats. For example an MP3 file should be transferred to the audio folder. If you copy pictures from the computer to the Memory Stick Duo, put them directly in the image folder (not in any of the subfolders). The DCIM folder contains picture files that have been saved after you have taken a picture with a camera. It is recommended not to place other picture files from your computer folders into this DCIM folder, as these pictures will not be visible on your phone afterwards. Managing files on the Memory Stick Duo To browse the Memory Stick Duo from a computer 1. Connect your phone and computer. 2. USB connection: · When you connect your phone and a computer using the USB cable, a dialog box in the computer asks you to make a choice what do with files on the removable disk (the Memory Stick Duo). Select Take no action. · Open Windows Explorer and browse to Removable Disk (drive:)\MSSEMC\Media files. Infrared or Bluetooth connection: · Double click the Sony Ericsson File Manager icon on the desktop of your computer. Now the Sony Ericsson File Manager window opens. · In the Sony Ericsson File Manager window, double click the icon representing your phone and browse to Phone Memory\Memory Stick\MSSEMC\Media files. It is recommended to not rename any predefined folders. To transfer files between the Memory Stick Duo and your computer 1. Find the file you wish to transfer, and select it. 2. Then either copy your file and paste it, or drag and drop it into the desired folder on your computer or on the Memory Stick Duo. To transfer several files 1. Find the files you wish to transfer, and select all of them by pressing Shift or Ctrl and clicking the files. 2. Then either copy and paste your files, or drag and drop them into the desired folder on your computer or on the Memory Stick Duo. When the files have been transferred to a computer, you can delete these files on your Memory Stick Duo, to free memory. 11 March 2005 Getting started Managing files Troubleshooting The following information may help you when managing files. Difficulty may be experienced when managing files from a computer, this often occurs when the computer and the phone do not connect properly, for example the settings in the Mobile Phone Monitor might need to be changed. You will find some solutions in the following sections. The computer fails to connect to your phone when using infrared connection To check the infrared connection Check that the infrared port is turned on in the phone and that the phone is aligned with the computer's infrared port. You should see one icon on the phone's screen and one in the computer's taskbar. Infrared port speed is too fast To set the infrared port speed on the computer 1. Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Infrared devices/ right-click the infrared port in use and select Properties. 2. Select Advanced/Maximize connect rate and set the value to no higher than 115 200 bps and click OK, close the Device Manager window and click OK. 3. Try to connect again. Problems with cable connection settings To solve installation problems 1. Check that the cable is properly connected to the phone and to the computer. 2. Check which COM port is used for the cable. The USB cable uses a "virtual" COM port. When the cable is connected, open Control Panel/System/ Hardware/Device Manager. Expand the Ports (COM and LPT) item in the list of devices. Make a note of the COM port number within parentheses after the item, for instance, Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Device Management. 3. In Control Panel/Phone Monitor Options/Com Ports, enable the COM port you identified in step 2. 4. Restart the computer without disconnecting the cable or turning off the phone and try to connect again. COM port speed is incorrectly set To set the COM port speed 1. Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT) and double-click the item, for instance, Sony Ericsson (phone model). 2. Select the Port settings and set the speed to no higher than 115200, click OK, close the Device Manager window and click OK. 3. Try to connect again. 12 March 2005 Getting started Managing files Mobile Phone Monitor options are incorrectly set You can configure the options by double-clicking on the Mobile Phone Monitor icon in the taskbar or by selecting Start/Settings/Control Panel/Phone Monitor Options, then select any of the following tabs: · Mobile phones ­ shows a list of the phones previously connected to your computer. · SIM cards ­ shows a list of SIM cards (Subscriber Identity Modules) previously recognized by your computer. · COM ports ­ shows the COM ports detected on your computer. The list includes virtual ports. · Advanced ­ shows the version and where the program is installed. Under the Components heading, files that were installed during installation and their individual versions are shown. · Setup ­ select how you want the Mobile Phone Monitor icon to be displayed.
