Pictures, videos, sounds, themes, Web pages, games, applications and other files are saved in your phone memory or on the Memory Stick, if inserted. The various files are divided into separate folders in the File manager, to make it easier for you to organize them. The file manager in the phone is divided into three tabs and icons are included to indicate where the files are saved. · All files all content in the phone memory and on the Memory Stick. · On Memory Stick all content on the Memory Stick. · In phone all content in the phone memory. You can browse, move, copy and edit the files saved in your phone memory and on the Memory Stick, if inserted. You can also browse, move, copy and edit the files from a computer, and exchange files between your phone and the computer. For this you need a connection via Bluetooth, infrared or a USB cable (as long as your phone holds these capabilities).
Copyright-protected files
Items that are downloaded, or received using one of the available transfer methods, may be copyrightprotected by DRM, Digital Rights Management. Such items normally have a key icon in front of the file name. If a file is protected, you may not be able to copy, send or transfer that file. You can see if a file is copyright-protected, and view other information about the file, in your phone.

Managing files using a computer
Before you can begin managing the files in your phone memory and on the Memory Stick using a computer, you need to establish a connection between your phone and the computer. For this you need a USB cable, an infrared device or a Bluetooth device (as long as your phone holds these capabilities). You can use the following computer software to transfer files from a computer to the phone: · Sony Ericsson File Manager that is part of the PC Suite (included on the CD that comes with the phone). · Windows® Explorer. The phone memory and the Memory Stick are added as removable disks.
Managing files using Windows Explorer
If you want to use Windows Explorer to transfer your files, you need to connect your phone and the computer using a USB cable. Your phone can be either turned on or turned off when connecting the USB cable. If the phone is on, select File transfer in the pop-up that appears in the phone. The phone will turn off in this mode.
Connecting via the USB cable
To connect via the USB cable when you want to use Windows Explorer
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Computer: If the Found New Hardware Wizard appears, click Cancel to exit the wizard. Phone: When your phone is turned on, } File transfer in the pop-up. Wait for the phone to prepare for file transfer. Computer: If a dialog box askes what you want to do with the files on the removable disks (the phone memory and Memory Stick), select Take no action 6. Computer: Your phone memory and Memory Stick are added as a removable disks in Windows Explorer.. For safe disconnection of the USB cable in File transfer, right-click on both Removable Disk icons in Windows Explorer and select Eject. A pop-up will appear on the phone screen stating that it is safe to disconnect the cable from the phone.

Transferring files using Windows Explorer
When you move a file from a computer to your phone memory or Memory Stick, each folder can contain a range of file formats. For example MP3 files can be transferred to the Sounds folder. Files that the phone cannot recognize can be saved in the Other folder.
To transfer files between your phone and a computer
1. Find the file you wish to transfer, and select it. (Select several files by pressing Shift or Ctrl and clicking the files.) 2. Copy and paste your file, or drag and drop it, into the desired folder on your computer or in your phone memory or Memory Stick. Do not disconnect the USB cable during file transfer as this may harm the phone memory or Memory Stick. When the files have been transferred to a computer, you can delete these files in your phone and on the Memory Stick, to free memory.
Managing files using Sony Ericsson File Manager
Before you can begin managing the files in your phone memory and on your Memory Stick using the Sony Ericsson File Manager, it is important to check you have the following: · A connection between your phone and the computer. For this you need a USB cable, an infrared device or a Bluetooth device (as long as your phone holds these capabilities). · Sony Ericsson File Manager software that is included in the PC Suite software (you find it on the CD that comes with your phone). This software is used in Windows to manage files that are stored in the phone memory or on the Memory Stick. The latest PC Suite software can also be downloaded from www.sonyericsson.com/support. The Sony Ericsson PC Suite with File Manager software for your phone series is designed to work with Windows 2000 (SP3/SP4) and Windows XP Home and Professional (SP1/SP2). The general system requirements are: At least 400 MB free hard disk space. Internet Explorer 5.0 or later has to be installed. · Windows 2000 with SP3 or SP4: 64 MB RAM, 266 MHz · Windows XP (Home and Professional) with SP1 or SP2: 128 MB RAM, 300 MHz

Installing the PC Suite software
To be able to transfer files between the phone memory or Memory Stick and your computer you need to install the Sony Ericsson File Manager software on your computer. The File Manager software is included in the PC Suite that you find on the CD that comes with your phone. You can also download the PC Suite from www.sonyericsson.com/support. Before installation: Uninstall any applications on your computer previously used to communicate with mobile phones, such as synchronization software. Install from the CD
To install PC Suite from the CD
1. Insert the CD that came with the phone. The CD should start automatically, if not: click Start/Run... and type in D:/start.exe, where D: is the CD drive letter on the system. 2. Select language. 3. Click Install in the PC Suite section. 4. InstallShield Wizard: click Next to continue the installation. 5. InstallShield Wizard: read and accept the licence agreement, then click Next. 6. InstallShield Wizard: select Complete as setup type, then click Next. 7. Download from the Web and install
To download the latest version of the PC Suite software
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. In your internet browser, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support. Select a region and country. Select a phone from the list or enter your phone model in the text field. Select Software downloads. Select Sony Ericsson PC Suite X.X.X under PC Suite. Select Download and save the file to your computer.
To install PC Suite
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Double-click on the downloaded PC Suite file. Select language. Click Install in the PC Suite section InstallShield Wizard: click Next to continue the installation. InstallShield Wizard: click Install to begin the installation. InstallShield Wizard: click Finish to exit the wizard.
Connecting via the USB cable
The Sony Ericsson USB cable that comes with the phone can be used to connect a computer to your phone. When connecting the USB cable to transfer files using the Sony Ericsson File manager, select Phone mode in the pop-up that appears in the phone.
To connect via the USB cable when you want to use Sony Ericsson File Manager
1. 2. 3. 4. Phone: Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Phone: Select Phone mode in the pop-up that appears. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed (this is done automatically), then the Phone Connection Wizard appears: · click Next to continue. · enter a name for your phone in the text field. · click Finish to close the wizard. To use Windows Explorer instead of the Sony Ericsson File Manager when connected, } Settings } the Connectivity tab } USB connection } File transfer.
Connecting via infrared
The infrared device in the computer must be installed (see the manufacturer's product documentation) and working properly before you start the installation procedures below. The procedures, terms, application names, and so on, may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the infrared device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturer's product documentation.

To connect your phone to a computer via the infrared port
1. Phone: Turn on infrared: } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Infrared port } On. 2. Computer: If necessary, activate the infrared port. 3. Phone: Place the phone close to the computer so that the infrared ports are facing each other. 4. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Connecting via BluetoothTM
If your phone has BluetoothTM wireless technology capabilities you can connect your phone to a computer. The Bluetooth device in the computer must be turned on (see the manufacturer's product documentation) and working properly before you start the installation procedures below. The procedures, terms, application names, and so on, may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the Bluetooth device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturer's product documentation.
To connect your phone to a computer via Bluetooth.
1. Phone: Turn on Bluetooth: } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Bluetooth } Turn on. 2. Computer: If necessary, activate the Bluetooth. 3. Computer: Double-click on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray. 4. Computer: Select Bluetooth/Search For Devices. 5. Computer: Right-click on the icon with the name of your phone and select Pair device. 6. Computer: Enter a PIN code (choose one or more digits), then click OK. 7. Phone: When Add to My devices? shows, } Yes. 8. Phone: Enter the same PIN code as in step 6 and } OK. 9. Computer: Double-click on the icon with the name of your phone. 10. Computer: Double-click on the Serial Port icon. 11. Phone: When Allow? shows, } Yes and then } Always allow. 12. Computer: Click OK.
Managing files using a computer
When you move a file from a computer to your phone memory or Memory Stick, each folder can contain a range of file formats. For example MP3 files can be transferred to the Sounds folder. Files that the phone cannot recognize can be saved in the Other folder.
To browse the phone memory and Memory Stick from a computer
1. Connect your phone and computer. 2. Double-click the Sony Ericsson File Manager icon on the desktop of your computer. 3. In the Sony Ericsson File Manager window, double-click the icon representing your phone to view the Phone Memory and Memory Stick folders.

Troubleshooting
The following information may help you when managing files.
Problem finding transferred files
Make sure you have put your files in the correct folder. Files that are placed in the wrong folder may not be visible in the phone. For example, you might not be able to listen to MP3 tracks in the WALKMANTM player if they are not placed correctly. You cannot view the transferred files in your phone until you have removed the USB cable from the phone.
After having used an infrared or a Bluetooth connection
To save the phone battery, turn off infrared or Bluetooth after you have used it.

Troubleshooting USB connection
If you experience problems connecting with a cable, this section offers some basic solutions.
Problems with connection settings
To solve installation problems
1. Check that the cable is properly connected to the phone and to the computer. 2. Make sure that the phone is turned on. 3. Check which COM port is used for the cable. The USB cable uses a "virtual" COM port. When the cable is connected, click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Expand the Ports (COM and LPT) item in the list of devices. Make a note of the COM port number within parenthesis after the item Sony Ericsson (phone model)
USB WMC Device Management.
4. Open Sony Ericsson PC Suite and click Tools/Phone Monitor Options.../Com Ports. Enable the COM port you identified in step 3. 5. Restart the computer without disconnecting the cable or turning off the phone and try to connect again.
COM port speed is incorrectly set
To set the COM port speed 1. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Ports (COM & LPT) and doubleclick the item Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Device Management. 2. Select the Port settings and set the speed to no higher than 115 200 bps.
3. Try to connect again.
Troubleshooting infrared connection
If you experience problems with infrared connection, this section offers some basic solutions.
The computer fails to connect to your phone
To check the infrared connection
Check that the infrared port is turned on in the phone and that the phone is aligned with the computer infrared port. You should see one icon on the screen of the phone and one in the computer taskbar.
Infrared port speed is too fast
To set the infrared port speed 1. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/ Infrared devices, right-click the infrared port in use and select Properties. 2. Select Advanced/Maximize connect rate and set the value to no higher than 115 200 bps.
3. Try to connect again.

Troubleshooting Bluetooth connection
If you experience problems with Bluetooth connection, this section offers some basic solutions.
The pairing procedure failed
To solve pairing problems
1. During the pairing procedure, place the phone as close as possible (less than 1 m) to the Bluetooth device on the computer. 2. Phone: Make sure that Bluetooth is turned on and set to "visible". } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Bluetooth } Turn on and } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Bluetooth } Visibility } Show phone. 3. Follow the instructions carefully to complete the pairing procedure. % 8 Connecting via BluetoothTM.
COM port is not activated
To activate or enable a COM port
1. In some Bluetooth computer installations, you must activate a COM port manually. This is done differently for different brands and models of Bluetooth devices. Refer to the manufacturer's product documentation for details. In many cases, you can right-click your phone icon in the window where all found Bluetooth devices are shown, and select a "COM port activation" item in the popup menu. Make a note of the COM port number of the activated port. 2. Open Sony Ericsson PC Suite and click Tools/Phone Monitor Options.../Com Ports. Enable the COM port you activated in step 1. 3. Keep Bluetooth turned on in your phone, restart the computer and try to connect again.
Phone Monitor options are incorrectly set
You can configure the options by clicking Tools/Phone Monitor Options... in the Sony Ericsson PC Suite: · Mobile phones shows a list of the phones previously connected to your computer. · SIM cards shows a list of SIM cards (Subscriber Identity Modules) previously recognized by your computer. · COM ports shows the COM ports detected on your computer. The list includes virtual ports. · Advanced shows the version and where the program is installed. Under the Components heading, files that were installed during installation and their individual versions are shown. · Setup select how you want the Phone Monitor icon to be displayed.
