Press the navigation key right. } Before you start Your phone has a built-in modem. You can use it to connect a computer to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to browse the Internet or manage your email messages. The instructions in this document focus on how to set up a computer running Microsoft® Windows® 2000, Windows® XP Home or Windows® XP Professional using your phone as a modem to access the Internet. Before you set up your computer and start using the modem, make sure you have the following: · GSM phone subscription that supports data transmission using a packet switched connection (GPRS) or a dial-up connection (CSD/HSCSD). · Phone subscription that covers Internet browsing. If you are not sure whether you have this, please contact your network operator. · A data account (WAP configuration) set up in your phone. A simple way of setting up a data account is to ask your network operator to send you a message that contains the required information to create an account automatically on your mobile phone. You can also use the Phone setup on www.sonyericsson.com/support to have all necessary WAP settings sent to your phone in a text message (SMS). System requirements The Sony Ericsson PC Suite software that you find it on the CD that comes with your phone is designed to work with Windows 2000 (SP3/SP4), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional (SP1/SP2). 2 February 2007 Getting started Modem functionality The general system requirements are: · At least 500 MB free hard disk space. Internet Explorer 5.0 or later has to be installed. · Windows 2000 (SP3/SP4): 128 MB RAM, 500 MHz · Windows XP (SP1/SP2): 256 MB RAM, 500 MHz Overview of instructions Set up your phone as a modem in just 3 steps: Install PC Suite % 3 Installing PC Suite Set up the modem % 4 Setting up the modem Create a connection to your Internet service provider % 5 Creating an Internet connection Installing PC Suite With the Sony Ericsson Mobile Networking Wizard you can create networking connections on your computer. The Mobile Networking Wizard program is included in PC Suite that you find on the CD that comes with your phone. You can also download it from www.sonyericsson.com/support. Before installing any new or updated version of PC Suite, all previous programs related to phone communication has to be uninstalled. It is recommended to uninstall from the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (Windows Explorer). To install PC Suite from the CD 1. Insert the CD that came with your phone. The CD should start automatically. If the installation program does not start, use this procedure on your computer: click Start and select Run..., write D:/start.exe and click OK (D: is the CD drive letter on the system). 2. Select a language. 3. Click Install in the PC Suite section. 4. Click Next to continue the installation. 5. Read and accept the licence agreement. Click Next. 6. Select Complete as setup type. Click Next. 7. Click Install to begin the installation. 8. In your Web browser, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support. Select a region and country. Select a phone from the list or enter your phone model in the text field. Select Software downloads. Select Sony Ericsson PC Suite X.X.X under PC Suite. Select Download and save the file to your computer. Double-click the downloaded PC Suite file. Select a language. Click Install in the PC Suite section. Click Next to continue the installation. Read and accept the licence agreement. Click Next. Select Complete as setup type. Click Next. Click Install to begin the installation. Click Finish to exit the wizard. Setting up the modem To use the phone as a modem, you need to connect your phone and the computer. You can do this using the USB cable or the infrared port. Connecting using the USB cable When connecting the USB cable to use the phone as a modem, select Phone mode in your phone. Do not disconnect the USB cable when transferring files as this may harm the phone memory or the Memory Stick MicroTM (M2TM). For safe disconnection of the USB cable, right-click the Removable Disk icon in Windows Explorer and select Eject. A message appears in the phone when it is safe to disconnect the cable from the phone. To connect using the USB cable 1. 2. 3. 4. Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Phone: Select Phone mode. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed automatically. The Phone Connection Wizard appears. 5. In the Phone Connection Wizard, click Next to continue. 6. Enter a name for your phone in the text field. 7. Click Finish to close the wizard. To create a dial-up connection % 5 Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD). To create a packet switched data connection % 6 Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (GPRS). 4 February 2007 Getting started Modem functionality Connecting using the infrared port Before you connect your phone to a computer, the infrared device in the computer must be installed and working properly. See the manufacturer's product documentation. To connect the phone to a computer using the infrared port 1. Phone: Turn on infrared. From standby select Menu } Settings } Connectivity } Infrared port } On. 2. Computer: If necessary, activate the infrared port. 3. Place your phone with a maximum distance of 20 cm next to the computer so that the infrared ports are facing each other. 4. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed automatically. The Phone Connection Wizard appears. 5. In the Phone Connection Wizard, click Next to continue. 6. Enter a name for your phone in the text field. 7. Click Finish to close the wizard. The procedures, terms and application names may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the infrared device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturer's product documentation. To create a dial-up connection % 5 Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD). To create a packet switched data connection % 6 Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (GPRS). Creating an Internet connection You have to create a connection to be able to connect to the Internet. First make sure you have the correct Internet settings in your phone. Contact your network operator or use the Phone setup on www.sonyericsson.com/support to get the required settings for your phone. Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD) To create a connection 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Connect your phone and computer. % 4 Setting up the modem. Open the Mobile Networking Wizard from PC Suite. Click New Connection. Select Dial-up and click Next. Select the correct modem from the list. Click Next. Name the new connection and select if you want to use the new connection as your default connection. Click Next. Enter the phone number for the dial-up connection. Enter User ID, Password and Domain for the connection. You only need to enter Password and User ID if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. Click Finish to create the connection. Click the connect icon (a green square) in the Mobile Networking Wizard. 5 February 2007 Getting started Modem functionality Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (GPRS) There are three options that you can use to create an Internet connection: · From the phone ­ use the Internet settings from the phone. · Automatic mode ­ use predefined settings from your network operator. · Manual mode ­ customize the settings from your network operator. Open the Mobile Networking Wizard from PC Suite. Click New Connection. Select Packet Switched Data and click Next. Select the modem from the list and click Next. Enter a name for the new connection and select if you want to use it as your default connection. Click Next. Mark Use settings from an existing entry in the device and click Next. Select the configuration of your network operator from the list and click Next. Enter User ID and Password for the connection if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. Click Finish to create the connection. Click the connect icon (a green square) in the Mobile Networking Wizard. To create a connection using the automatic mode 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Select your mobile network operator from the list. Select Automatic mode and click Next. Enter User ID and Password for the connection if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. Click Finish to create the connection. Select the correct mobile network operator from the list. Select Manual mode and click Next. Make sure that the predefined values are correct and enter User ID and Password for the connection if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. Click Finish to create the connection. Click the connect icon (a green square) in the Mobile Networking Wizard.
