You can use it to connect a computer to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to browse the Internet or manage your email messages. Press the navigation key to the right. % } Before you start The instructions in this document focus on how to set up a computer running Microsoft® Windows 2000, Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional using a EDGE or GPRS connection to access the Internet. Before you set up your computer and start using the modem, make sure you have the following: · GSM phone subscription that supports EDGE, GPRS or High Speed Data. · Phone subscription that covers Internet browsing. If you are not sure whether you have this, please contact your network operator. · Data account (WAP configuration) set up in your phone. See your phone user guide and your GSM operator's subscription information for details. You can also use the phone setup on www.sonyericsson.com/support to have all necessary WAP settings sent to your phone in a text message (SMS). 3 January 2006 Getting started Modem functionality System requirements The Sony Ericsson PC Suite with Communication Center software for your phone series is designed to work with Windows 2000 (SP3/SP4), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro (SP1/SP2). The general system requirements are: At least 400 MB free hard disk space. Internet Explorer 5.0 or later has to be installed. · Windows 2000 with SP3 or SP4: 64 MB RAM, 266 MHz · Windows XP (Home and Professional) with SP1 or SP2: 128 MB RAM, 300 MHz Overview of instructions Set up your phone as a modem in just 3 simple steps! The Mobile Networking Wizard software is included in the PC Suite that you find on the CD that comes with your phone. You can also go to www.sonyericsson.com/support to download the PC Suite. Before installation: Uninstall any applications on your computer previously used to communicate with mobile phones, such as synchronization software. Install from the CD To install PC Suite from the CD 1. Insert the CD that came with the phone. The CD should start automatically, if not: click Start/Run... and type in D:/start.exe and click OK (D: is the CD drive letter on the system). 2. Select language. 3. Click Install in the PC Suite section. 4. InstallShield Wizard: Click Next to continue the installation. 5. InstallShield Wizard: Read and accept the licence agreement, then click Next. 6. InstallShield Wizard: Select Complete as setup type, then click Next. 7. InstallShield Wizard: Click Install to begin the installation. 8. InstallShield Wizard: Click Finish to exit the wizard. - or - Download from the Web and install To download the latest version of the PC Suite software 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. In your Internet browser, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support. Select a region and country. Select a phone from the list or enter your phone model in the text field. Select Software downloads. Select Sony Ericsson PC Suite X.X.X under PC Suite. Select Download and save the file to your computer. To install the PC Suite 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Double-click on the downloaded PC Suite file. Select language. Click Install in the PC Suite section. InstallShield Wizard: Click Next to continue the installation. InstallShield Wizard: Read and accept the licence agreement, then click Next. InstallShield Wizard: Click Finish to exit the wizard. 5 January 2006 Getting started Modem functionality Setting up the USB cable modem The Sony Ericsson USB cable that comes with your phone can be used to connect a computer to your phone. When connecting the USB cable to use the phone as a modem, select Phone mode in the pop-up that appears in the phone. To set up the USB cable modem Phone: Make sure your phone is turned on. Connect the USB cable to your phone and the computer. Phone: } Phone mode in the pop-up. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed (this is done automatically), then the Phone Connection Wizard appears: · click Next to continue. · enter a name for your phone in the text field. 5. click Finish to close the wizard. 1. 2. 3. 4. Setting up the infrared modem If your phone has infrared technology capabilities you can connect your phone to a computer and use the phone as a modem via infrared. The infrared device in the computer must be installed (see the manufacturer's product documentation) and working properly before you start the installation procedures below. The procedures, terms, application names, and so forth, may differ depending on the brand and model of the infrared device in your computer. Refer to the manufacturer's product documentation. To set up the infrared modem 1. Phone: Turn on infrared: } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Infrared port } On. 2. Computer: If necessary, activate the infrared port. 3. Phone: Place the phone close to the computer so that the infrared ports are facing each other. 4. Computer: The first time you connect your phone to the computer, you need to identify and name the phone. Wait for the drivers to be installed (this is done automatically), then the Phone Connection Wizard appears: · click Next to continue. · enter a name for your phone in the text field. · click Finish to close the wizard. 6 January 2006 Getting started Modem functionality The infrared modem has now been set up. · To create a dial-up connection % 8 Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD) or · To create a packet switched data connection % 8 Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (EDGE/GPRS). Setting up the BluetoothTM modem If your phone has BluetoothTM wireless technology capabilities you can connect your phone to a computer and use the phone as a modem via Bluetooth. The Bluetooth device in the computer must be installed (see the manufacturer's product documentation) and working properly before you start the installation procedures below. The procedures, terms, application names, and so forth, may differ depending on the brand and model of the Bluetooth device in your computer. Refer to the manufacturer's product documentation. To set up the Bluetooth modem 1. Phone: Turn on Bluetooth: } Settings } the Connectivity tab } Bluetooth } Turn on. 2. Computer: If necessary, activate the Bluetooth. 3. Computer: Double-click on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray. 4. Computer: Select Bluetooth/Search For Devices. 5. Computer: Right-click on the icon of your phone name. and select Pair device. 6. Computer: Enter a PIN code (choose one or more digits), then click OK. 7. Phone: When Add to My devices? shows, } Yes. 8. Phone: Enter the same PIN code as in step 6 and } OK. 9. Computer: Double-click on the icon of your phone name 10. Computer: Double-click on the Serial Port icon. 11. Phone: When Allow? shows, } Yes and then } Always allow. 12. Computer: Click OK. The Bluetooth modem has now been set up. · To create a dial-up connection % 8 Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD) or · To create a packet switched data connection % 8 Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (EDGE/GPRS). 7 January 2006 Getting started Modem functionality Creating a dial-up Internet connection (CSD/HSCSD) You have to create a connection to be able to connect to the Internet via EDGE or GPRS. The procedure is the same for both EDGE and GPRS connections. First make sure you have the correct Internet settings in the phone. Contact your Service Provider or use the Phone Setup on www.sonyericsson.com/support. to get the required settings for your phone. To create a connection 1. Open the Mobile Networking Wizard from the Sony Ericsson PC Suite. 2. Click New Connection. 3. Select Packet Switched Data, and then click next. 4. Select the correct modem from the list, and then click next. 5. Name the new connection and select if you want to use the new connection as your default connection. Click next. 6. Enter the telephone number for the dial-up connection. 7. Enter User ID, Password and Domain for the connection. You only need to enter Password and User ID if you want to save them for the next time you use the connection. 8. Click Finish to create the connection. 9. Click on the connect icon (a green square) in the Mobile Networking Wizard. Creating a packet switched data Internet connection (EDGE/GPRS) You have to create a connection to be able to connect to the Internet via EDGE or GPRS. The procedure is the same for both EDGE and GPRS connections. First make sure you have the correct Internet settings in the phone. Contact your Service Provider or use the Phone Setup on www.sonyericsson.com/support to get the required settings for your phone. There are three options that you can use to create a connection to your network operator: · From the phone ­ Use the internet settings from the phone · Automatic mode ­ Use predifined settings for your network operator. · Manual mode ­ Customize the settings for your network operator. 8 January 2006 Getting started Modem functionality Creating a connection using the Internet settings from the phone To create a connection 1. Open the Mobile Networking Wizard from the Sony Ericsson PC Suite. 2. Click New Connection. 3. Select Packet Switched Data, and then click Next. 4. Select the modem from the list, and then click Next. 5. Enter a name for the new connection and select if you want to use it as your default connection. Click Next. 6.
