You can use it to connect a computer to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to browse the Internet or manage your email messages. Before you start The instructions in this document focus on how to set up a computer running Windows® ME, Microsoft® Windows 2000, Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro using a GPRS connection to access the Internet. Before you set up your computer and start using the modem, make sure you have the following: · 3G (UMTS) or GSM phone subscription that supports GPRS or High Speed Data. · Phone subscription that covers Internet browsing. If you are not sure whether you have this, please contact your network operator. · Data account (WAP configuration) set up in your phone. See your phone User guide and your 3G (UMTS) or GSM operator's subscription information for details. You can also use the Phone setup on www.SonyEricsson.com/support to have all necessary WAP settings sent to your phone in a text message (SMS). 3 June 2005 Getting started Modem functionality System requirements The Sony Ericsson Mobile Networking Wizard software for your phone series is designed to work with Windows® ME, Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro. The general system requirements are: At least 120 MB free hard disk space. Internet Explorer 5.0 or later has to be installed. · Windows ME: 64 MB RAM, 200 MHz · Windows 2000 with SP3: 64 MB RAM, 266 MHz · Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro: 128 MB RAM, 300 MHz How to use your phone as a modem You are now prepared to set up your phone as a modem in just 3 simple steps! Overview of instructions Install the Mobile Networking Wizard · Use the CD that comes with the phone, % 5 Install from the CD. - or · Download from the Web, % 5 Download from the Web and install. Set up the modem Create a connection to your Internet service provider · Use a USB cable, % 6 Setting % 10 Creating a dial-up up the USB cable modem. connection to your Internet service provider. - or · Use Infrared, % 8 Setting up the infrared modem. - or · Use Bluetooth, % 9 Setting up the BluetoothTM modem. 4 June 2005 Getting started Modem functionality Installing Mobile Networking Wizard The Sony Ericsson Mobile Networking Wizard software provides the necessary assistance to create dial-up networking connections on your computer. The Mobile Networking Wizard software is included in the PC Suite that you find on the CD that comes with your phone. You can also downloaded the PC Suite from www.SonyEricsson.com/support. The software can be installed on a computer running Windows® ME, Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro. Install from the CD To install the Mobile Networking Wizard software from the CD 1. Insert the CD that came with the phone. The CD should start automatically. 2. Select language and click OK. 3. Click Install PC Suite now and follow the instructions on the screen. - or - Download from the Web and install To download the PC Suite and get the latest version of the Mobile Networking Wizard 1. In your Internet browser, go to www.SonyEricsson.com/support. 2. Select a region and country or "Global support area". 3. Enter the product name: phone model. 4. Select Software downloads/PC Suite and follow the Mobile Networking Wizard download instructions. To install the Mobile Networking Wizard software 1. Double-click on the downloaded PC Suite file. 2. If the installation does not start automatically, click Start/Run.../Browse and select the Start program (PC Suite_version.exe). Click OK to start the program. 3. Now the files you need will be extracted. Click Next. 4. When the installation has started, select the language you prefer, and click OK. 5. Click Next and follow the instructions in the wizard. When asked to select a Setup type: · select Custom and then Mobile Networking Wizard if you want to install only the Mobile Networking Wizard software. · select Complete if you want to install all the software features that are included in the PC Suite. 6. When the installation is complete the Sony Ericsson Mobile Networking Wizard icon appears on your desktop. The first time you start Mobile Networking Wizard, the Mobile Phone Monitor phone connection wizard starts to identify the phone model and capabilities. Enter information, click on "Next" and "Finish". 5 June 2005 Getting started Modem functionality Setting up the USB cable modem The Sony Ericsson USB cable that comes with the phone can be used to connect a computer to your phone and use the phone as a modem. When setting up the USB cable modem, you first have to install the USB drivers, and then set up the USB phone modem in the computer. Installing the USB cable drivers For the first step in the setup procedure, installing the cable, you need access to the software driver for the cable. The software drivers can be installed from the Sony Ericsson CD that came with your phone. You can also download the latest version of the driver from www.SonyEricsson.com/support. Install the USB cable drivers from the CD To install the USB cable drivers when you have the CD 1. Insert the CD that came with your phone. If the PC Suite installation window opens, simply close it as it is not needed here. 2. Connect the USB cable to a USB port on the computer and to the phone. 3. The "Found New Hardware Wizards" starts. Click Install the software automatically and click Next. 4. The wizard should find the software drivers automatically. Click Finish. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all drivers are installed (typically four times). 6. To verify that the USB cable modems have been installed, click Start/Settings/Control Panel, and double-click the Phone and Modem Options icon. 7. Select the Modems tab. Check that the modems "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Data Modem" and "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Modem" are in the list. - or - Download and install the USB cable drivers from the Web To download the software driver for your cable 1. In your Internet browser, go to www.SonyEricsson.com/support. 2. Select a region and country or "Global support area". 3. Enter the product name: Product name. Select Software downloads/Drivers and scripts and follow the download instructions on the page. 4. Use the Windows Explorer to locate the downloaded file and extract its contents. Make a note of the location of the extracted files. To install the software drivers for your USB cable when you have downloaded the driver 1. Make sure you have downloaded the drivers from www.SonyEricsson.com/support as described in "To download the software driver for your cable" on page 6. 2. Connect the USB cable to a USB port on the computer and to the phone. 3. The "Found New Hardware Wizards" starts. Select the option Install from a list or specific location and click Next. 6 June 2005 Getting started Modem functionality 4. Click Browse... · To install the driver that you downloaded, browse to the directory where you extracted the downloaded file, click OK. 5. Click Finish in the final wizard window. 6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until all drivers are installed (typically four times). 7. To verify that the USB cable modems have been installed, click Start/Settings/Control Panel, and double-click the Phone and Modem Options icon. 8. Select the Modems tab. Check that the modems "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Data Modem" and "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Modem" are in the list. Setting up the USB phone modem in the computer To set up the USB phone modem in the computer 1. Connect the USB cable to the phone. 2. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel, and double-click the Phone and Modem Options icon. 3. Select the Modems tab. · If the "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Data Modem" and/or "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Modem" are in the list of modems, proceed to step 8. · If a USB modem other than the "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Data Modem" or "Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Modem" is in the list, the modem driver should be updated. Select the modem in the list, click Properties, select the Driver tab, and click Update Driver.... In the first dialog, select the option Install from a list or specific location. · If no USB modem is installed, click Add. The "Add Hardware Wizard" starts. In the first dialog, select the option Don't detect my modem. I will select it from a list. Proceed to step 5. 4. Select the option Don't search. I will choose the driver to install and click Next. 5. First select Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications in the Manufacturers list, then select Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Data Modem or Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Modem in the Models list, and click Next. 6. In the "Add Hardware Wizard", select the COM port for the USB cable. 7. The modem driver is installed. Click Finish in the final wizard window. 8. Select the Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Data Modem or Sony Ericsson (phone model) USB WMC Modem and click Properties. 9. Select the Modem tab and check that Maximum port speed is set to 115200. 10. Select the Diagnostics tab and click Query modem. In the lower list, the queries sent to the modem in the phone and the responses returned from the modem are displayed. If an error message is displayed, such as "The modem failed to respond...", exit all dialogs and the Control Panel. For further instructions, % 11 Troubleshooting. 11. To finish the Internet setup, % 10 Creating a dial-up connection to your Internet service provider. 7 June 2005 Getting started Modem functionality Setting up the infrared modem You can connect your phone to a computer using Infrared if your phone has Infrared capabilities. When the phone and a computer running Windows® ME, Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows XP Home and Windows XP Pro are first connected via infrared, a generic modem driver is automatically installed. You will only need to check the modem properties and install the Sony Ericsson modem driver. The infrared device in the computer must be installed (see the manufacturer's product documentation) and working properly before you start the installation procedures below. The procedures, terms, application names, and so on, may be slightly different depending on the brand and model of the infrared device in the computer. In such cases, refer to the manufacturer's product documentation. To set up infrared 1.
