Model PD-6 Owner's Manual
By upgrading the PD-6 software to version 1.02, the following functions are enhanced or improved. For using the PD-6 version 1.02, please read this supplementary manual, as well as the original owner's manual and V1.01 supplement.
1) During recording, if the laser pickup heats up and reaches the abnormal temperature, an alert message is shown, as well as an error tone is generated. If it continues to heat up and reaches the critical temperature, the PD-6 automatically stops recording. See the table below for details about the output patterns of the error tones, and see the next page for details about the alert messages. If a non critical error occurs during writing or reading, an alert message is shown, and the drive is automatically reset and initialized. If a severe error occurs, the PD-6 stops recording (see the next page for details about the alert message). The default setting in the "Default File Name?" menu item in the setup mode has been changed from "Date" to "Take", while the default file name has been changed to "SCENE". When editing a file name in the "Edit file name" menu item, the Meta data for Avid ("fSCENE=******" and "fTAKE=***") in the BWF descriptor is now automatically updated according to the edited file name.

The following table shows the output patterns of the error tones generated by the PD-6, including the newly added error tone for the overheat of the laser pickup, as well as those available from the original version. See page 96 in the owner's manual for details about "how to make setting of the Error tone" menu item.

Details about alert messages
Even though you use a Fostex recommending DVD-RAM disk, there may be a case when an alert message is shown because a severe or non critical error occurs during writing or reading. The following shows details about alert messages and how to cope with them by type. Follow the description below if any alert message is shown.
· Error during writing
1. If a severe error occurs during writing due to defective media or otherwise, the PD-6 may stop recording and locates to the beginning of the current file or ABS 0 after "Disc Error! Write" is shown, and the alert message as below is shown, while an error tone of the write error is output from the monitor outputs (see on the previous page) . At this point the user should change disks due to the possibility of defective media and or bad sectors. The user should power down the unit and change disks. You can dismiss the alert message by pressing the [CLEAR] key.
If the PD-6 stops writing after the alert message as above is shown, the recorded data is not guaranteed.
By executing the physical format, you can restore the disk with which the alert message above is shown, however, the original writing (access) speed is not guaranteed. Be sure to turn the power Off and then On before executing the physical format. Please note that the physical format can take approx. 20 minutes.
2. If an error occurs that is non critical, the PD-6 will recover from the error when the machine is able to continue to record data. This type of error can occur from media that is damaged from misuse such as fingerprints or scratches.

You can see the location where the error occurred by using the text editor. The error information is recorded as "(file name).dia" in the "Info." folder.
If you play back the position where an error occurred (at the "Rec Time Out" position), a noise may be generated. Therefore, be sure not to make playback with loud volume. Also note that if you pause recording by pressing the [STANDBY] key while such non critical errors occur successively, the PD-6 may automatically stop recording as with a severe error described above (the data already recorded remains on the disk). When the PD-6 automatically stops recording, the following alert message is shown.
3. When recording continuously (or successively) for extended periods of time under extreme hot weather conditions at high bit/sampling rates and maximum track capability, temperatures of the laser pickup can reach the upper tolerance of its operational range. If the unit is in an "over the shoulder bag", it should be removed to ventilate the machine. In such a scenario the PD-6 will display an alert message and sound an error tone warning the user. The user should stop recording and allow the machine to cool. Common sense should apply that in extreme weather conditions the machine should be well ventilated to prevent an interruption of recording.
If you continue recording while the alert message above is shown, the laser pickup may reach the critical temperature and "Emergency!" is shown for about three seconds, then the PD-6 automatically stops recording and sets to the STOP status (the recorded data before stopping recording remains on the disk). After stopping recording, the display changes to show the alert message below, which can be dismissed by pressing the [CLEAR] key. In this condition, the [RECORD] key does not accept the operation.
· Error during reading
If data cannot be read back from the disk correctly, the following alert will be displayed and the PD-6 will reinitialize the drive.
