Re:system
Introduction
The modules from the M series from Revox draw a lot of their functionality from the programming of their microprocessors. In order to keep faith with the M51 "For ever young" concept, each module can be loaded with the newest software and therefore the newest functions, in a matter of seconds with the M51 programmer. So before you start, you should take a few minutes to study the following information
Preparation
There are 4 points that you should consider to ensure correct programming: 1. Remove all connections from the rear of the M51, including the power cable. 2. Connect the M51 either directly to the serial interface on the PC/Notebook or for a longer connection, you can use a normal SUB9-D cable (serial computer cable). 3. Plug the supplied plug-in power supply into a power outlet and connect it to the M51 programmer. If the connections have been made correctly, the red LED on the power socket should light up. 4. In order to avoid the danger of static electricity, you should discharge yourself to some metal object before starting work.

Re:system
Update Depending on the amount of modules, which are to be programmed, there are two different options: Updating individual plug-in modules If you only want to reprogram individual plug-in modules, it's enough if you just remove these from their plug-in positions. Please check the advise in the Installation section of your operating instructions.
Updating the complete M 5 1 If you want to update all the M51 modules, you must remove the housing cover from the M51 as the Display module and the process-controlled power unit (Supply) are inside. Stand the M51 on its front on a nonscratch surface and remove the six screws from the underside of the housing. These connect the housing cover to the chassis. Now you can carefully remove the cover by pulling it backwards off the chassis. Return the M51 to the normal position for programming. The individual plug-in modules do not need to be removed as the programming plugs are accessible from above. The exception to this is the 5.1 Decoder module, which is in slot 7. Before removing this module, please refer to the advice in index 5.1 Decoder module / Chapter Installation in your operating instructions.

Re:system
Installing the PC program
Insert the CD in your CD or DVD drive and execute the program setup.exe with a double-click. The program can be installed on all Windows® computers . Please follow the on-screen instructions displayed by the installation program. After a successful installation, a new folder REVOX will appear under Start/Programs with a sub-folder called M51 Programmer.
Checking the software
version
Before starting with the reprogramming, you should check that the software version of the M51 is up to date. For this purpose, the M51 has a function, which displays the current software version number as well as the plug position where each of the M51 modules is located. To call the Version function, press the Setup key on the M51 for about 2 seconds. The menu shown below appears.
Select the Version soft-key and shortly, the Version window is opened.

Re:system
Starting the update program
If you press the version softkey again, you can switch between the various Version pages. The first column with the hash (#) sign shows the number of the module plug-in position with the digits #1 - #6. The Audio Control Center (ACC=5.1 Decoder) is defined with #9. All other numbers define internal and external M51 components. The second column defines the individual modules. The DVD module, for example, is shown as DVD-1. The last column shows each modules' software version. Non-occupied plug-in positions are marked with the text Not used Example #3 DVD-1 0.90 Clicking on the folder Programs/ REVOX/ M51-Programmer in the Start menu bar starts the Update program. After starting, the following window appears on your screen:
When you are ready to continue, type YES or Ja in the input field at the bottom of the screen and then click on the OK button (see below).
This line tells you that the DVD module with software version 0.90 is located in plug-in position 3.

Re:system
Executing the update
After this, the main update window appears:
Checking the interface
The update program offers you the option of checking to see whether the serial port is communicating correctly with the M51 programmer. To use this option, click on the Check button. If the connection is correct, the following window appears with the version number of the M51 programmer:
Now select from the drop-down list in the Serial Port input box, the serial interface you have connected the M51 programmer to.

Re:system
Selecting the module
If an error has been identified, this is shown as follows: If the interface is working correctly with the M51 programmer, the next step is to select the module, which is to be updated. Click on the required module. In the example shown below, the Analog I/O has been selected Shortly after this, this module appears in the foreground and the information field shows the corresponding software with the current version number.
Cause: - Programmer power unit is not connected or is no working correctly - The selected interface is not in fact connected to the M51 programmer
Cause: - The interface connection is damaged or interrupted - The selected interface is being used by another device
If you are doing a complete M51 software update, we would recommend you to access each module in the order as shown on the screen. This corresponds to the actual order of the plug-in slots as they are located in the M51.

Re:system
Updating the firmware
Now connect the M51 Programmer ribbon cable to the red programming socket on the module. The exact position of the connector is marked with a red border on the screen menu. The actual update can now begin. Click on the Update Firmware button in lower right corner of the screen. The new software is loaded in three steps, which are carried out automatically by the program:
! Please note !
Please take great care to insert the plug the right way round. The correct was is defined by a coding guide pin on the plug which fits into a hole next to the programming socket. This ensures the correct polarity. If this plastic guide pin should have been broken off, this can result in incorrect polarity and damage to the module! 1.) Read out the EEProm:
All customer-entered data, such as source names, station names or display and 5.1 decoder settings are read out and stored for reloading into the new software. This means that no customerspecific data is lost and the settings don't have to be repeated.

Re:system
Update error messages
2.) Program the EEProm If any errors occur during programming, these are the possible causes:
The EEProm is deleted and the saved customer data is reloaded. 3.) Program Flash
Cause: - The processor is defective - The processor has locked up and must be released by REVOX.
The Flash memory is deleted and the new program is written to it.
Cause: - A software error occurred during programming. Repeat the update - There is a problem with the connection to the module. Check the connection
The Status and Progress bars keep you informed how far the program has got at each stage. Additionally, the processor type on the module in question is displayed.

Re:system
Quitting the programming
When the programming is successfully completed, the following window appears:
Checking the results
When you have finished, you should check whether the version numbers in the M51 Update menu are the same as those in the M51 displays. To find out how to check the M51 version number, please refer to the Checking the software version chapter.
Confirm the message by clicking on the Close button and remove the programming plug from the module. Now you can continue the programming with the other modules or quit the program by clicking on EXIT in the main window.
