This interface is compatible with Hi-Speed USB 2.0; however, the maximum data transfer rate will be 12 Mbits/s. Paper Support Removing the Protective 1 Parts Remove the protective tape. DO NOT connect the USB cable. Connecting the USB cable is done when installing the driver. Paper Support Flap Use the paper support flap for Letter, Legal and A4 size paper. 4 Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and mis-feeds. 2 Loading Paper You can load up to 100 sheets of 80 gsm paper. For more details, see "About paper" in Chapter 1 of the User's Guide. 1 5 Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine and remove the output paper tray. Gently insert the paper into the paper tray print side down and top edge first. Check that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark. Make sure the paper side guides touch the sides of the paper. Be careful that you do not push the paper in too far; it may lift at the back of the tray and cause paper feed problems. 2 6 Press and slide the paper guide to fit the paper width. Paper Side Guide Put the output paper tray back on and push the paper tray firmly back into the machine. 4 1 Connect the power cord. 2 TAD The machine must be fitted with an earthed plug. Since the machine is grounded through the power outlet, you can protect yourself from potentially hazardous electrical conditions on the telephone network by keeping the power switched on when you connect the machine to a telephone line. Similarly, you can protect yourself when you want to move your machine by disconnecting the telephone line first and then the power cord. Warning (Example for Australia) Macintosh® Network 5 For Network Users Mac OS® 8.6 - 9.2 DO NOT connect the USB cable yet. TAD Mac OS® X Please set the Receive Mode to "External TAD" if you have an external answering machine. (MFC-210C, MFC-410CN only) For more details, see "Connecting an external device to your machine" in Appendix of the User's Guide. Windows® Network Connect the telephone line cord. Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the socket on the machine marked LINE and the other end to a modular wall socket. (Example for Australia) If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone answering machine, connect it as shown below. Windows® Setting Up the Machine Installing Phone Line 3 and Power Cord If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone, connect it as shown below. Step 1 Setting Up the Machine 5 Installing the Ink Cartridges Warning Warning Set Your Country 4 (For Australia / New Zealand Customer Only) You must set your country so that the machine works correctly. If ink gets in your eyes wash them with water immediately, and if irritation occurs consult a doctor. 1 1 Check that the power is turned on (by plugging in the power cord) The LCD shows: Set Country Press Set Key Make sure that the power is turned on. The LCD shows: No Cartridge 2 Lift the scanner cover from the right-hand side of the machine until it locks securely into the open position. 2 Scanner Cover Press Menu/Set. The LCD shows: Australia Select & Set 3 4 5 Press or to select the country (AUSTRALIA or NEWZEALAND). Press Menu/Set when the LCD shows your country. The LCD prompts you to make sure of the country again Australia? 1.Yes 2.No 3 Remove the protective parts. 6 Press 1 to go to step 7. ---OR--Press 2 to go back to step 1 to select the country again. After the LCD shows Accepted for two seconds, it shows; Please Wait After about 30 seconds, the LCD shows: Check Cartridge Do not throw away the protective parts. You will need them when you transport the machine. 7 8 Go to step 5 "Installing the lnk Cartridges". 6 4 Take out the ink cartridge. 6 5 (B) Carefully remove the bottom cap. DO NOT touch the area shown in the illustration below. (A) 7 Lift the scanner cover to release the lock. Gently push the scanner cover support down and close the scanner cover. If Install shows on the LCD after you install the ink cartridges, check to make sure the ink cartridges are installed correctly. Mac OS® X If the cartridge cover comes off when you open the bag the cartridge will not be damaged. Keep the ink cartridge in an upright position when you insert it into the slot. Mac OS® 8.6 - 9.2 OK The machine will clean the ink tube system for use for the first time. This process will occur only once, the first time ink cartridges are installed. The cleaning process will last approximately four minutes. The LCD shows: Preparing System Approx 4 Minutes Continued... 7 For Network Users Macintosh® Network Windows® Network Opening OK Windows® Setting Up the Machine Press firmly down on the ink cartridge until the hook snaps over it, taking care to match the slot colour (A) with the cartridge colour (B), as shown in the diagram below. Step 1 Setting Up the Machine · DO NOT remove ink cartridges if you do not need to replace them. If you do so, it may reduce the ink quantity and the machine will not know the quantity of ink left in the cartridge. · DO NOT shake the ink cartridges. If ink stains your body or clothing, wash with soap or detergent immediately. · DO NOT insert and remove the cartridges repeatedly. If you do so, the ink may seep out of the cartridge. · DO NOT dismantle or tamper with the ink cartridge, this can cause the ink to leak out of the cartridge. · Brother inkjet machines are designed to work with ink of a particular specification and work to a level of optimum performance when used with genuine Brother ink cartridges. Brother cannot guarantee this optimum performance if ink or ink cartridges of other specifications are used. Brother does not therefore recommend the use of cartridges other than genuine Brother cartridges with this machine or the refilling of empty cartridges with ink from other sources. If damage is caused to the print head or other parts of this machine as a result of the use of ink or ink cartridges other than genuine Brother products due to the incompatibility or lack of suitability of those products with this machine, any repairs required as a result will not be covered by the warranty. If you mix the colours by installing an ink cartridge in the wrong position, you must clean the print head by running several cleaning cycles after correcting the cartridge installation. (See "Cleaning the print head" in chapter 11 Troubleshooting and Routine Maintenance of the User's Guide.) Once you open an ink cartridge, install it in the machine and use it up within six months of installation. Use unopened ink cartridges by the expiration date written on the cartridge package. 6 1 Print Quality Check After the cleaning cycle is finished, the LCD shows: Set Paper and Press Start 2 Make sure the paper is loaded in the paper tray. Press Colour Start. The machine starts printing the PRINT QUALITY CHECK SHEET (only during initial ink cartridge installation). Check the quality of the four colour blocks formed by the short lines printed on the sheet. (BLACK/ CYAN/ YELLOW/ MAGENTA) Print Quality Check 1. Check the quality of the four-color blocks formed by the short lines. 2. If all the short lines are clear and visible, the quality is acceptable. the quality is acceptable. Select (Yes). If you can see missing short lines, select (No) to begin the color cleaning process and follow the prompts on the LCD. 3 Avoid touching the printed surface of the paper immediately after printing, the surface may not be completely dry and may stain your fingers. 4 The LCD shows: Is Quality OK? 1.Yes 2.No 8 5 OK Poor Year:2004 (e.g. Enter 0 4 for 2004.) Black OK? 1.Yes 2.No After making your selection 1 (Yes) or 2 (No) for both black and colour, the LCD shows: Start Cleaning? 1.Yes 2.No Press 1 (Yes), the machine will then start cleaning the colours. After cleaning is finished, press Colour Start. The machine starts printing the PRINT QUALITY CHECK SHEET again and goes back to the step 3. 5 Enter the two digits for the month on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Month:03 (e.g. Enter 0 3 for March.) Windows® Network 6 Enter the two digits for the day on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Day:01 7 Enter the time in 24-hour format on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Time:15:25 (e.g. Enter 1 5, 2 5 for 3:25 P.M.) Press Stop/Exit. If you want to repeat input, press Stop/Exit to start from Step 1. 9 For Network Users Macintosh® Network Mac OS® 8.6 - 9.2 8 Mac OS® X (e.g. Enter 0 1.) Windows® 6 1 2 3 4 Press Menu/Set. Press 0. Press 2. Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. The LCD asks you if the print quality is OK for black and colour. Press 1 or 2 on the dial pad. Setting Up the Machine If all lines are clear and visible, press 1 on the dial pad to finish the quality check. ---OR--If you can see missing short lines, press 2 on the dial pad and go to 6. 7 Setting the Date and Time Step 1 8 Setting Up the Machine Setting Your Station ID Selecting a Receive 9 Mode (MFC-210C, MFC-410CN only) There are four possible receive modes: Fax Only, Fax/Tel, Manual and External TAD. Are you connecting an external telephone or external telephone answering device to the MFC? You should store your name and fax number to be printed on all fax pages that you send. 1 2 3 4 Press Menu/Set. Press 0. Press 3. Enter your fax number (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Fax:_ Yes Are you using the voice message function of your external telephone answering device? No Fax Only The MFC automatically answers every call as a fax. No Do you want the MFC to answer every call? 5 Use the dial pad to enter your name (up to 20 characters), and then press Menu/Set. Name:_ Refer to the following chart for entering your name. If you need to enter 2 or more characters in a row from the same key, use the Yes Fax/Tel The MFC controls the line and automatically answers every call. Yes External TAD Your external telephone answering device (TAD) automatically answers every call. Voice messages are stored on the external TAD. Fax messages are printed. The built-in digital TAD answers voice calls. If the call is a fax, you can receive a fax automatically. For more details, see "TAD" in Chapter 7 of the User's Guide. Repair MFL-Pro Suite If you experience errors while installing the MFL-Pro Suite you can use this function to automatically repair and re-install the software. MFL-Pro Suite includes Printer Driver, Scanner Driver, ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE, ScanSoft® OmniPage® and True Type® fonts. PaperPort® 9.0SE is a document management application for viewing scanned documents. ScanSoft® OmniPage®, which is integrated into PaperPort® 9.0SE, is an OCR application that converts an image into text and inserts it into your default word processor. Go to page 14 Step 2 Installing the Driver & Software For USB Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 11. If you are using Windows® 2000 Professional: To access the PhotoCapture CenterTM features from your PC you may have to install a Windows® 2000 update first. The Windows® 2000 update is included with the MFL-Pro Suite installer. To install the update, follow the steps below: 1. Follow the installation steps from 1 to 4. 2. Click OK to start installation of the update. 3. When instructed, click OK to restart your PC. 4. After the PC restarts, the installation of MFL-Pro Suite will automatically continue. If the installation does not continue automatically, please open the MFL-Pro Suite installer menu again by ejecting then reinserting the CD-ROM disc or double-click the setup.exe program from the root directory, and continue from Step 4 to install the MFL-Pro Suite. Make sure there are no media cards inserted into the media drive of the machine. Brother recommends you connect the machine directly to your computer. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 2 3 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on as the administrator.) Insert the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your machine. If the language screen appears, select your language. 4 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. If you see the following screen, click OK to install the Windows® updates. After the updates are installed, your PC may restart. Then the installation will automatically continue. 1 Disconnect the machine from the power socket and from your computer, if you have already connected an interface cable. If the installation does not continue automatically, please open the main menu again by ejecting then reinserting the CD-ROM disc or double-click the setup.exe program from the root directory, and continue from Step 4 to install the MFL-Pro Suite. 14 5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. 9 When the screen appears, connect the USB interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. Windows® 6 7 When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, click Yes, if you agree to the Software Licence Agreement. 8 Select Local Connection, and then click Next. The installation will continue. 3. Carefully guide the USB cable into the trench as shown below, following the trench round and toward the back of the machine. Ensure that the cable does not restrict the cover from closing, or an error may occur. DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a non powered USB hub. Continued... 15 For Network Users Warning Installing the Driver & Software The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. To connect the USB cable to the machine: 1. Lift the scanner cover to its open position. 2. Connect the USB cable into the USB socket, marked with a symbol. You will find the USB socket above and to the left of the ink cartridge slots, as shown below. Setting Up the Machine Step 2 Installing the Driver & Software For USB Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) 0 A Lift the scanner cover to release the lock. Gently push the scanner cover support and close the scanner cover. Turn on the machine by plugging in the power cord. D After restarting the computer, the Installation Diagnostics will run automatically and the installation results window will be shown. If the installation is unsuccessful try installing again using the Repair MFL-Pro Suite option from the main menu. Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen. It will take a few seconds for the installation screens to appear. The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another, please wait for a while. The MFL-Pro Suite, Brother Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. B When the Brother and ScanSoft on-line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. C Click Finish to restart your computer. 16 Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 11. Before installation, if you are using Personal Firewall software, disable it. Once you are sure that you can print, re-start your Personal Firewall software. 2 3 Lift the scanner cover to release the lock. Gently push the scanner cover support and close the scanner cover. Windows® 1 5 Insert the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your machine. If the language screen appears, select your language. 3. Carefully guide the network cable into the trench as shown below, following the trench round and toward the back of the machine. 6 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. Warning Ensure that the cable does not restrict the cover from closing, or an error may occur. In case of using both USB and LAN cables, guide both cables through the trench. Continued... 17 For Network Users If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. Installing the Driver & Software Connect the network cable to the machine, and then connect it to a free port on your hub. To connect the network interface cable to the machine: 1. Lift the scanner cover to its open position. 2. Connect the network cable into the LAN socket, marked with a symbol. You will find the LAN socket above and to the left of the ink cartridge slots, as shown below. Turn on the machine by plugging in the power cord. 4 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on as the administrator.) Windows® Network Setting Up the Machine For Network Interface Cable Users (MFC-410CN, MFC-620CN only) (Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) Step2 Installing the Driver & Software For Network Interface Cable Users (MFC-410CN, MFC-620CN only) (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) If you see the following screen, click OK to install the Windows® updates. After the updates are installed your PC may restart. Then the installation will automatically continue. 0 Select Network Connection, and then click Next. If the installation does not continue automatically, please open the main menu again by ejecting then reinserting the CD-ROM disc or double-click the setup.exe program from the root directory, and continue from Step 6 to install the MFL-Pro Suite. A The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another, please wait for a while. If the machine is configured for your network, select the machine from the list, and then click Next. This window will not appear if there is only one machine connected on the network, it will be selected automatically. 7 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. B If the machine is not yet configured for use on your network, the Configure IP Address window will appear. Enter the IP address information appropriate to your network by following the on-screen instructions. 8 9 The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, click Yes, if you agree to the Software Licence Agreement. C When the Brother and ScanSoft on-line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. 18 D Click Finish to restart your computer. For network installations the Repair MFL-Pro Suite selection from the main menu is not supported.
