Please purchase the appropriate interface cable for the interface you intend to use (Parallel or USB). USB interface cable Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters). Do not connect the USB cable to a non-powered hub or a Mac® keyboard. When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB port on a keyboard or non-powered USB hub. Parallel interface cable Please make sure you use a Parallel interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters). Use a shielded interface cable that is IEEE 1284-compliant. When you move the MFC, grasp the side handholds that are under the scanner. Install the Drum Unit 1 Assembly Do NOT connect the interface cable. Connecting the interface cable is done when installing the driver. 5 1 Open the front cover of the MFC. Close the front cover of the MFC. Front Cover 2 Unpack the drum unit assembly. 3 Gently rock it from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the assembly. 4 1 Pull the paper tray completely out of the MFC. 4 Put paper in the paper tray. Check that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark. 2 While pressing the paper guide release lever, slide the adjusters to fit the paper size. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots. Maximum paper mark For Legal size paper, press in the inside latches and pull out the back of the paper tray. 5 For details on supported paper specifications, see "About paper" in Chapter 1 of the User's Guide. For Network Users 5 Macintosh® Network Macintosh® USB Put the paper tray firmly back in to the MFC and unfold the output tray support flap before you use the MFC. Windows® Network Windows NT® 4.0 Parallel Windows® Parallel Windows® USB Setting Up the MFC Load Paper in the Paper 2 Tray 3 Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. Step 1 Setting Up the MFC If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone, connect it as shown below. Install the Power Cord 3 and Phone Line Do not connect the Parallel or USB cable yet. 1 Make sure that the power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the MFC. If you are sharing one phone line with an external telephone answering device, connect it as shown below. Please set the receive mode to External TAD. For more details, see "Connecting the MFC" in Chapter 1 of the User's Guide. 2 Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet. Turn the power switch on. TAD 3 Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the jack on the MFC marked LINE and the other end to a modular wall jack. TAD Warning The MFC must be grounded using a 3-prong plug. Since the MFC is grounded through the power outlet, you can protect yourself from potentially hazardous electrical conditions on the telephone network by keeping the power cord connected to your MFC when you connect it to a telephone line. Similarly, you can protect yourself when you want to move your MFC by disconnecting the telephone line first and then the power cord. 6 The MFC displays the date and time, and prints it on every fax you send. You should store your name and fax number to be printed on all fax pages that you send. Press 2. Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Press 3. Enter your fax number (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Date/Time Year:2005 (e.g. Enter 0, 5 for 2005.) Station ID Fax: 5 5 Enter the two digits for the month on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Date/Time Month:03 (e.g. Enter 0, 3 for March) Enter your telephone number (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. (If your telephone number and fax number are the same, enter the same number again.) 6 Enter the two digits for the day on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. Station ID Tel: 6 (e.g. Enter 0, 1.) Station ID Name: Refer to the following chart for entering your name. If you need to enter a character that is on the same key as the previous character, 7 Enter the time in 24-hour format on the dial pad, and then press Menu/Set. No Fax Only The MFC automatically answers every call as a fax. No Do you want the MFC to answer fax and telephone calls automatically? Local Language English 5 Fax/Tel The MFC controls the line and automatically answers every call. If the call is not a fax, the MFC will ring for you to pick up the call. Press Stop/Exit. Repair MFL-Pro Suite If you experience errors while installing the MFL-Pro Suite, you can use this function to automatically repair and re-install the software. MFL-Pro Suite includes Printer Driver, Scanner Driver, ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE, ScanSoft® OmniPage® and True Type® fonts. PaperPort ® 9.0SE is a document management application for viewing scanned documents. ScanSoft ® OmniPage®, which is integrated into PaperPort ® 9.0SE, is an OCR application that converts an image into text and inserts it into your default word processor. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. 1 Turn off and unplug the MFC from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected an interface cable. 6 7 The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. 2 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your MFC. If the language screen appears, select your language. 3 4 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. 8 Select Local Connection, and then click Next. The installation will continue. If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. (MFC-7820N only) If you want to install the PS driver (Brother's BR-Script Driver), select Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. 12 9 When this screen appears, connect the USB interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the MFC. (For Windows® XP) 0 Plug in the power cord and turn on the MFC. (For Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000) ® DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. A When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. Brother recommends that you connect the MFC directly to your computer. DO NOT connect the MFC to a USB port on a keyboard or a nonpowered USB hub. Continued ... Installing the Drivers & Software 13 For Network Users It will take a few seconds for the installation screen to appear. The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The screens appear one after another. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear. Windows® USB Setting Up the MFC Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For USB Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) B Click Finish to restart your computer. (After restarting the computer, for Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) If the installation is unsuccessful, try installing again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the CD-ROM main menu. Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen. The MFL-Pro Suite, Brother Printer Driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. 14 Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the MFC" on pages 4 - 9. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 4 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. Windows® USB 1 Turn off and unplug the MFC from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected an interface cable. If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your MFC. Installing the Drivers & Software 15 For Network Users 2 5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. Windows® Parallel Setting Up the MFC For Parallel Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For Parallel Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) 7 When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. 9 When this screen appears, connect the parallel interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the MFC. (For Windows® XP) 8 Select Local Connection, and then click Next. The installation will continue. (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000) (MFC-7820N only) If you want to install the PS driver (Brother's BR-Script Driver), select Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. DO NOT plug in the power cord before connecting the parallel interface cable. It may cause damage to your MFC. Brother recommends that you connect the MFC directly to your computer. 16 0 Plug in the power cord and turn on the MFC. C When the following screen appears, click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows® and continues the installation. A For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional users, click Next. D E For Windows® XP users, wait for a while since the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The screens appear one after another. DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. For Windows® 2000 Professional users, if the Digital Signature Not Found dialog boxes appear, click Yes to install the drivers. B When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. If the installation is unsuccessful, try installing again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the CD-ROM main menu. Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen. The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. Installing the Drivers & Software 17 For Network Users After the computer restarts, the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. Follow the instructions on the screen. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Windows® Parallel Setting Up the MFC Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For Windows NT® Workstation Version 4.0 Users Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the MFC" on pages 4 - 9. After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. 18 7 8 The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. 0 When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. A Select Local Connection, and then click Next. The installation will continue. (MFC-7820N only) If you want to install the PS driver (Brother's BR-Script Driver), select Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. If the installation is unsuccessful, try installing again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the CD-ROM main menu. Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen. The MFL-Pro Suite, PC-FAX, Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. 19 For Network Users Windows NT® 4.0 Parallel 9 Installing the Drivers & Software When the following screen appears, click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows® and continues the installation. (You must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Setting Up the MFC Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For Network Interface Cable Users (MFC-7820N and Optional NC-2200w only) (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/NT/2000 Professional/XP) Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the MFC" on pages 4 - 9. 1 Before installation, if you are using Personal Firewall software, disable it. Once you are sure that you can print, re-start your Personal Firewall software. Close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. Connect the network cable to the MFC, and then connect it to a free port on your hub. 6 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. 2 If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. 7 If you are using the optional NC-2200w External Wireless Print/Scan Server, follow installation steps 1 to 3 in the NC-2200w Quick Setup Guide first. Then go to Step 5. After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. 3 Plug in the power cord and turn on the MFC. 8 9 4 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your MFC. If the language screen appears, select your language. The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. 5 20 0
