The type of batteries provided depends on the area, country or region where the camera was purchased. · This guide will abbreviate the COOLPIX4100, COOLPIX3200 and COOLPIX2200 product names to E4100, E3200 and E2200 respectively. Interface connector cover USB connector Parts of the Camera 1 Take Pictures *If the package contains alkaline batteries, skip step 1 and go straight to step 2. Step 1 Charge the batteries 1 Connect the power cable to the MH-71 battery charger wall plug into a power outlet and insert the . The CHARGE lamp will light . 2 Insert a pair of EN-MH1 batteries as indicated on the charger. Charge the batteries 3 The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. 4 Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. An exhausted battery can be fully recharged in about two hours. 2 Take Pictures To improve battery performance, select the type of battery currently inserted in the camera in the setup menu. The default setting is alkaline battery. When any other type of battery is used, change the setting. For more information, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the E4100/E3200/E2200 (P. 96). Replacing Batteries Important Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp has gone out before removing or inserting batteries. Read Battery Warnings Read and follow all warnings and instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer. Damaged Batteries The following batteries can not be used: · Batteries with peeling or damaged insulation. Using batteries with damaged insulation could result in leakage, overheating, or rupture. Note that due to manufacturing defects even new batteries may have faulty insulation. · Batteries with insulation that covers only the sides of the battery and not the area around the negative terminal. Charge the batteries · Batteries with a flat negative terminal. Do not use such batteries even if the insulation adequately covers the area around the negative terminal. Alkaline Batteries Performance of alkaline batteries may vary greatly depending on the manufacturer. Choose a reliable brand. EN-MH1 Batteries Using an MH-71 battery charger, charge EN-MH1 batteries before first use. Charge each pair of batteries at the same time - do not charge batteries one at a time or mix batteries with different charges. Note that EN-MH1 batteries may discharge quickly immediately after purchase or after the batteries have been left unused for an extended period. This is normal, and the batteries will retain a charge for longer periods after being used and recharged several times. For more information on charging batteries, see the documentation provided with the MH-71. Alternative Power Sources · The camera can also be used with two ZR6 (AA) nickel-manganese batteries, two FR6/L91 (AA) lithium batteries or one CRV3 lithium battery. · To power the camera continuously for extended periods, use an EH-62B AC adapter. Do not, under any circumstances, use another make or model of AC adapter. Failure to observe this precaution could result in overheating or in damage to the camera. Take Pictures 3 Step 2 Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap securely to the eyelet on the camera body as shown below. Step 3 Insert the batteries 1 2 Attach the camera strap/Insert the batteries 1 Open the battery-chamber cover Pressing the battery-chamber latch ( ), slide the cover out and flip it open ( ). 2 Insert the batteries Insert the batteries as shown in the label inside the battery chamber. 3 Close the battery-chamber cover 1 Close the battery-chamber cover ( ) and slide it in until it latches ( ). Be sure that the battery-chamber cover is properly latched. 2 4 Take Pictures Step 4 Turn the camera on 1 Rotate the mode dial to P Mode dial 2 Turn the camera on Turn the camera on Set the battery type Important · When using EN-MH1 batteries, the appropriate setting must be selected in the battery type option. Set the battery type after setting the time and date. For more information, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the E4100/E3200/E2200 (P. 82 and 96). · With E4100, the type of the included batteries is set to the default. Take Pictures 5 Step 5 Choose a language and set the clock The first time the camera is turned on, a language-selection dialog will be displayed in the monitor. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The multi selector is used to navigate through the camera menus. Move cursor up Press center (a) to make selection Cancel and return to previous menu, or move cursor left Move cursor down Display sub-menu, move cursor right, or make selection. 1 LANGUAGE Highlight Deutsch (German), English, Español (Spanish), Français (French), Italiano, (Italian), Nederlands (Dutch), Svenska (Swedish), (Japanese), (Simplified Chinese), or (Korean) and press a. Choose a language and set the clock MENU Cancel Set 2 DATE Set time and date? No Yes 3 DATE Set time and date? No Yes Confirmation dialog displayed. Highlight Yes. To turn daylight saving time on or off, press multi selector down to highlight DaylightSaving and press center of multi selector. When DaylightSaving is checked, time will automatically be advanced one hour. To return to Step 4, press multi selector up to highlight current time zone. 4 TIME ZONE 2004. 01. 01 00 : 00 London, Casablanca :DaylightSaving TIME ZONE menu displayed. 6 Take Pictures 5 HOME TIME ZONE E 6 HOME TIME ZONE E London, Casablanca MENU Back U Set London, Casablanca MENU Back U Set Display map of world time zones. Select home time zone. 7 D 01 DATE M 01 00 Y 2004 00 8 D 05 DATE M 01 00 Y 2004 00 Display DATE menu. Edit Day (order of Day, Month, and Year may differ in some areas). Choose a language and set the clock 9 D 05 DATE M 08 00 Y 2004 00 10 Select Month. Repeat steps 8 - 9 to edit Month, Year, hour, and minute. Highlight D M Y. 11 M 08 DATE D 05 13 Y 2004 00 12 Choose order in which Day, Month, and Year will be displayed. Exit to shooting mode. Take Pictures 7 Step 6 Take pictures Storing Pictures Pictures will be stored in the camera's internal memory (capacity: about 14.5MB) unless a Secure Digital (SD) memory card is inserted in the camera, in which case pictures will be stored on the card. For information on inserting a memory card, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the E4100/E3200/E2200 (P.10). 1 Check indicators in the monitor. Battery level indicator AUTO 19 Take pictures Display NO ICON X WARNING ! ! BATTERY EXHAUSTED 19 Number of exposures remaining The battery level is shown in the monitor as follows: Description Battery fully charged. Low battery. Batteries exhausted. Replace with new or fully charged batteries 8 Take Pictures 2 Ready the camera Hold the camera steadily in both hands. AUTO 19 Don't Block the Shot To avoid dark or partially obscured pictures, keep your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash window. 3 Frame the subject Frame the subject in the center of the monitor. Pictures can be framed in the monitor or the viewfinder. Take pictures Zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on your subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. AUTO 19 Zoom out Zoom in Take Pictures 9 4 Focus Press the shutter-release button halfway to set focus and exposure. Focus and exposure will lock while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Camera unable to focus on subject at center of frame. Using focus lock, focus on another subject at same distance, then recompose picture and shoot. Monitor turns off while flash is charging. 5 Take the picture Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. To prevent blur, press the shutter-release button down smoothly. The E4100/E3200/E2200 has a two-stage shutter-release button. Pressing the shutter-release button halfway focuses the camera. Pressing it the rest of the way down releases the shutter to record a picture. 10 Take Pictures Step 7 View pictures 1 Press the x button 2004.08.05 2004.08 05 2004 08.05 13:00 00 A picture will be displayed in the monitor. When the camera is off, pressing the x button for about one second will turn the camera on with a picture displayed in the monitor. 1 1 2 View additional pictures 2004.08.05 2004.08 05 2004 08.05 13:00 00 1 1 Press the multi selector down or right to view pictures in the order recorded, up or left to view pictures in reverse order. Keep the multi selector pressed to scroll quickly to the desired frame. To return to shooting mode, press the x button again. View pictures 3 Turn the camera off Press the power switch. The camera is off when the power-on lamp is off. Now that you've taken a few pictures, you can transfer (copy) them to a computer, where you can view, edit, and organize them. If the USB cable provided with the camera is used to connect the camera to a printer that supports PictBridge, you can transfer pictures to the printer and print them directly from the camera. Install PictureProject Step 2 Transfer pictures pg. 23 12 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Step 1 Install PictureProject Before Installing PictureProject · Turn off any virus-checking software · Exit all other applications that may be running Note to Users of Other Nikon Software (Nikon View/Nikon Capture) Uninstall Nikon View before installing PictureProject. For information on using PictureProject with Nikon Capture, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Install PictureProject Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 13 Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional When installing, using, or uninstalling PictureProject, log on as a "Computer administrator" (Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional) or "Administrators" (Windows 2000 Professional). Important 1 Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. 2 Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Install Center program will launch automatically and a "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step 3). 3 A language selection dialog will be displayed. Select a language and click Next. Installing PictureProject (Windows) If the Install Center Program Does Not Launch Automatically Select My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional; in other versions of Windows, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop) and double-click the CD (PictureProject) icon in the My Computer window. 14 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Windows 4 Click Easy Install. The standard install includes: · PTP drivers for COOLPIX-series cameras (Windows XP only) · Nikon Mass Storage Camera Drivers (Windows 98SE only) · Panorama Maker · Apple QuickTime 6 · Nikon FotoShare (Europe only) · PictureProject · Microsoft DirectX 9 5 The first components to be installed are the camera drivers. What drivers are installed depends on the computer's operating system. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PTP driver (on some systems the driver may be installed by a wizard). Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows 2000 Professional/Windows Millennium Edition (Me) No drivers are installed. Proceed to Step 6 . Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Mass Storage Drivers. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 15 Windows 6 The Panorama Maker install wizard will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. 7 Click Finish to exit the Panorama Maker install wizard. 8 Click Yes to install QuickTime. Installing PictureProject (Windows) 9 The Nikon FotoShare setup program will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. * Nikon FotoShare is available only in the European release of PictureProject. 10 Click OK to exit the Nikon FotoShare setup program. 11 The PictureProject setup program will now start. After reading the license agreement, click Yes to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. 16 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Windows 12 The destination folder for PictureProject will be displayed under "Destination Folder." Click Next to install PictureProject to this folder, or click Browse to select another destination. 13 Click Yes to create a new folder for PictureProject. 14 Click Yes to create a shortcut to PictureProject on the desktop, No to proceed without creating a desktop shortcut. 15 Click Finish to exit the PictureProject installer. Installing PictureProject (Windows) 16 Panorama Maker requires DirectX version 8.1 or later. If an earlier version is installed, the dialog shown below will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 17 Windows 17 Click Finish or Yes to restart the computer. Dialog displayed if DirectX is not installed Dialog displayed if DirectX is installed 18 When the computer restarts, the PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Start button Installing PictureProject (Windows) Start button Advanced... button Cancel button The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. To proceed without cataloging existing pictures, click Cancel (existing pictures can be cataloged manually at any time; see the PictureProject reference manual for details). To catalog existing pictures, click Advanced... to choose the desired source location and then click Start (note that some time may be required to catalog all pictures if the selected location contains a large number of images). When all pictures in the source location have been cataloged, a notification dialog will be displayed; click Finish to exit the Import Assistant. For more information on importing pictures into PictureProject, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). 19 After exiting the Import Assistant, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer. 18 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) Mac OS X Important When installing, using or uninstalling PictureProject, log in to the "Admin" account. 1 Turn the computer on and wait for it to start up. 2 Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. Double-click the PictureProject installer CD icon on the desktop, then double-click the Welcome icon. The "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step 3). 3 A language-selection dialog will be displayed; select a language and click Next. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) 4 Click Easy Install to begin installation of the following software: · Panorama Maker · PictureProject · Apple QuickTime 6 (QuickTime 6 will not be installed if QuickTime 6 or later is already installed on the computer) Once installation is complete, European users can install Nikon FotoShare by copying the "FotoShare" icon to the hard disk (Step 15). Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 19 Macintosh 5 The Panorama Maker installer will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. 6 Click OK to complete installation of Panorama Maker. 7 The message shown at right will be displayed (Europe only; users in other areas can proceed directly to Step 8). Click OK. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) 8 Enter your administrator name and password and click OK. 9 The PictureProject installer will start. Click Install. 10 The dialog shown at right will be displayed. Click Yes. 20 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Macintosh 11 Click Yes to add PictureProject to the Dock. 12 Click Quit to complete installation of PictureProject. Apple QuickTime 6 If an earlier version of QuickTime is installed, the QuickTime 6 installer will start automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. When the dialog shown at right is displayed, click Continue. Do not complete the "Registered To," "Organization," and "Registration Number" fields. On some systems, the QuickTime installer may require considerable time to complete installation. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) 13 Click Restart to restart the computer. Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is not installed Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is installed Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 21 Macintosh 14 When the computer restarts, log in to the "Admin" account. The PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Source location Cancel button Advanced... button Start button The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. To proceed without cataloging existing pictures, click Cancel (existing pictures can be cataloged manually at any time; see the PictureProject reference manual for details). To catalog existing pictures, click Advanced... to choose the desired source location and then click Start (note that some time may be required to catalog all pictures if the selected location contains a large number of images). When all pictures in the source location have been cataloged, a notification dialog will be displayed; click Finish to exit the Import Assistant. For more information on importing pictures into PictureProject, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) 15 After exiting the Import Assistant, open the "FotoShare" folder on the PictureProject installer CD and install Nikon FotoShare by dragging the "FotoShare" icon to the "Applications" folder on the hard disk (note that FotoShare is included only with the European release of PictureProject). When copying is complete, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer. 22 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Step 2 Transfer Pictures Before Connecting the Camera Pictures can be copied from the camera to the computer by: · Pressing the a (V) button on the camera (page 26) · Clicking the Transfer button in PictureProject (page 26) Which method you will use depends on your computer's operating system and the USB option selected in the camera setup menu. After consulting the following table, select the appropriate option using the USB item in the camera setup menu. The default option is Mass Storage. Pictures transferred using: Operating system Camera a (V) button* V PictureProject Transfer button Windows XP Home Edition Windows XP Professional Windows 2000 Professional Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later Choose Mass Storage or PTP. Choose Mass Storage. Choose PTP. Choose Mass Storage or PTP. * The camera a (V) button can not be used to transfer pictures in the following cases. Use the PictureProject Transfer button. · When transferring pictures from the camera memory and Mass Storage is selected for the USB option · When the memory card write-protect switch is in the "lock" position. Unlock by sliding the switch to the "write" position before transferring pictures. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 23 3 USB PTP Mass Storage 4 USB PTP Mass Storage Display USB menu. Highlight PTP or Mass Storage. 5 USB PTP Mass Storage Make selection. Transferring Pictures 1 Turn the camera off. Transfer pictures Use a Reliable Power Source When transferring pictures between the camera and the computer, use a fullycharged EN-EL1 battery. If in doubt, charge the battery before beginning transfer or use an EH-62B AC adapter kit (available separately). Do not, under any circumstances, use another make or model of AC adapter. Connecting the Camera to a Computer Important Be sure to install PictureProject before connecting the camera to your computer. If the Add New Hardware Wizard is displayed when the camera is connected, click Cancel to exit the wizard. 24 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 2 Turn the computer on and wait for the operating system to start up. Connect the camera to the computer as shown in the illustration, using the USB cable provided. UC-E6 USB cable USB Hub The camera may not function as expected when connection via a USB hub or keyboard. 3 Turn the camera on. The camera will automatically be recognized and registered as a new device. Once the camera has been registered, the PictureProject Transfer will be displayed in the computer monitor. The camera monitor will remain blank. Transfer pictures Windows (illustration shows dialog displayed when Mass Storage is selected for USB; when PTP is selected, camera is displayed in place of memory card icon) Macintosh AutoPlay (Windows XP Home Edition/Professional) A dialog similar to that shown at right will be displayed when the camera is turned on (if the USB option in the camera setup menu is set to Mass Storage, a "Removable Disk" dialog will be displayed; otherwise the dialog will show the camera name). Select Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using PictureProject and click OK to start PictureProject. To bypass this dialog in the future, check Always do the selected action. See the PictureProject reference manual for information on what to do if PictureProject Transfer fails to start automatically. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 25 4 Click the Transfer button in the PictureProject Transfer. All pictures in the camera's internal memory or on the memory card will be transferred to your computer. Windows Macintosh The Camera a (V) (Transfer) Button V Pictures marked with an V icon can also be transferred using the camera a (V) button. 2004.08.05 2004.08 05 2004 08.05 13:00 00 1 1 When the a (V) button is pressed, the following messages will be displayed in the camera monitor. PREPARING TO TRANSFER TRANSFERRING IMAGES TO COMPUTER TRANSFER COMPLETED Transfer pictures * The camera a (V) button can not be used to transfer pictures in the following cases. Use the PictureProject Transfer button. · When transferring pictures from the camera memory and Mass Storage is selected for the USB option · When the memory card write-protect switch is in the "lock" position. Unlock by sliding the switch to the "write" position before transferring pictures. Before using the camera a (V) button to transfer pictures in Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later, set the USB option in the camera setup menu to PTP (see pages 23­24). During Transfer Important While transfer is in progress, do not: · Disconnect the USB cable · Turn the camera off · Remove the battery · Disconnect the AC adapter Failure to observe this precaution could interfere with normal functioning of both the camera and the computer. 26 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 5 When transfer is complete, the pictures will be displayed in the PictureProject window. Windows Macintosh Transfer pictures Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 27 6 Disconnect the camera Once your pictures are displayed in PictureProject, transfer is complete and you can disconnect the camera. If PTP is selected in the USB menu (see pages 23­24): Turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable. If you have not changed the USB setting from its default setting of Mass Storage: Before turning the camera off or disconnecting the USB cable, remove the camera from the system as described below. Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device from the menu that appears. Windows 2000 Professional Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Stop USB Mass Storage Device from the menu that appears. Transfer pictures Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Stop USB Disk from the menu that appears. Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) In My Computer, click with the right mouse button on the removable disk corresponding to the camera and select Eject from the menu that appears. 28 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Mac OS X Drag the "NO_NAME" camera volume into the Trash.
