Only Nikon brand electronic accessories (including battery chargers, batteries, AC adapters, and Speedlights) certified by Nikon specifically for use with this Nikon digital camera are engineered and proven to operate within the operational and safety requirements of this electronic circuitry. THE USE OF NON-NIKON ELECTRONIC ACCESSORIES COULD DAMAGE THE CAMERA AND MAY VOID YOUR NIKON WARRANTY. The use of third-party rechargeable Li-ion batteries not approved by Nikon could interfere with normal operation of the camera or result in the batteries overheating, igniting, rupturing, or leaking. For more information about Nikon brand accessories, contact a local authorized Nikon dealer. Parts of the Camera The principle camera parts are listed below. See the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography for more information. Mode dial Power-on lamp Power switch Built-in Speedlight Shutter-release button Eyelet for camera strap Memory card slot cover Zoom buttons Green (AF) lamp Red ( ) lamp Multi selector (center)/ (transfer) button (play) button Viewfinder Interface connector cover Monitor Battery-chamber cover Power connector cover for AC adapter kit USB/ Audio/Video (A/V) out connector Battery latch Interface connector cover Battery-chamber cover Parts of the Camera 1 Take Pictures Charge the battery Connect the power cable to the MH-61 battery charger ( ) and insert the wall plug into a power outlet ( ). The CHARGE lamp will light ( ). Charge the battery Remove the terminal cover from EN-EL5 and insert the battery into the MH-61, making sure that the small projection on the battery is inserted into the matching pit on the charger. Charging will begin immediately. The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. 2 Take Pictures Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. An exhausted battery can be fully recharged in about two hours. Read Battery Warnings · For more information on using the EN-EL5 rechargeable Li-ion battery, see the documentation for the battery or the MH-61 battery charger. · Read and follow the battery warnings and cautions on pages i - ii and 128 in the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography, together with any warnings and instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer. Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap securely to the eyelet on the camera body as shown below. Take Pictures 3 Insert the battery Open the battery-chamber cover · Slide the cover in the direction shown in ( ) until it stops and open the cover ( ). Insert the battery · Insert the battery as shown in the label at the entrance to the battery chamber, making sure the positive "+" and negative "­" terminals are in the correct orientation. The small projection on the EN-EL5 battery is on the same side as the negative terminal. Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Ensure the battery is in the correct orientation. Insert the battery · The orange battery latch is pushed aside as the battery is inserted. The latch will close when the battery is fully inserted. Close the battery-chamber cover · Close the cover ( ) and slide it in until it latches ( ). · Be sure that the cover is closed firmly. 4 Take Pictures Turn the camera on Rotate the mode dial to Turn the camera on Turn the camera on Take Pictures 5 Choose a language and set the clock The first time the camera is turned on, a language-selection dialog will be displayed in the monitor. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The multi selector is used to navigate through the camera menus. Move cursor up. Press to make selection. Cancel and return to previous menu, or move cursor left. Move cursor down. Display sub-menu, move cursor right, or make selection. Choose a language and set the clock Highlight Deutsch (German), English, Confirmation dialog displayed. Español (Spanish), Français (French), Highlight Yes. Italiano (Italian), Nederlands (Dutch), Svenska (Swedish), (Japanese), (Simplified Chinese), or (Korean), and press . * To turn daylight saving time on or off, press to highlight DaylightSaving and press . When DaylightSaving is checked, time will automatically be advanced one hour. To return to Step 3, press to highlight current time zone. TIME ZONE menu displayed.* 6 Take Pictures Display map of world time zones. Select home time zone. Display DATE menu. Edit Day (order of Day, Month, and Year may differ in some areas). Choose a language and set the clock Select Month. Repeat steps 7-8 to edit Highlight D M Y. Month, Year, hour, and minutes. Choose order in which Day, Month, and Exit to shooting mode. Year will be displayed. Take Pictures 7 Take pictures Check the indicators in the monitor. Battery level indicator Number of exposures remaining The battery level is shown in the monitor as follows: Display NO ICON Description Battery fully charged. Low battery. If flash fires, monitor turns off while Speedlight recharges. Battery exhausted. Charge or replace with a fully charged battery. Take pictures WARNING!! BATTERY EXHAUSTED Pictures will be stored in the camera's internal memory (capacity: about 12MB) unless a Secure Digital (SD) memory card is inserted in the camera, in which case pictures will be stored on the card. For information on inserting a memory card, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography (see pages 10 - 11). 8 Take Pictures Ready the camera. · Hold the camera steadily with both hands. Don't Block the Shot To avoid dark or partially obscured pictures, keep your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash window. Frame the subject. · Frame the subject in the center of the monitor. · Pictures can be framed in the monitor or the viewfinder. Zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on your subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. Take pictures Zoom out Zoom in Take Pictures 9 Focus. · Press the shutter-release button halfway to set focus and exposure. Red ( ) lamp Focus area Green (AF) lamp Focus indicator The camera automatically selects a focus area containing the subject closest to the camera from five focus areas (default setting in auto shooting mode). Focus area will appear when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. The selected focus area will be displayed in green when the subject is in focus. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check Red ( ) lamp, Green (AF) lamp, focus area, and focus indicator: Take pictures Red ( ) lamp On Blinks Off On: green/green Blinks: green/red Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging. Flash off or not required. Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus on subject. Recompose the picture and try again. Green (AF) lamp/focus area and focus indicator Take the picture. · Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. · To prevent blur, press the shutter-release button down smoothly. The COOLPIX5200 has a two-stage shutter-release button. Pressing the shutter-release button halfway focuses the camera. Pressing the rest of the way down releases the shutter to record a picture. 10 Take Pictures View pictures Press the button. · The most recent picture will be displayed in the monitor. When the camera is off, pressing the button for about two seconds will turn the camera on with a picture displayed in the monitor. View additional pictures. · / : view pictures in the order recorded. · / : view pictures in reverse order. · To return to shooting mode, press the button again. View pictures Turn the camera off. · Press the power switch. · The camera is off when the power-on lamp is off. Now that you have taken a few pictures, you can transfer (copy) them to a computer, where you can view, edit, and organize them. Take Pictures 11 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Step1 Install PictureProject pg. 13 Windows Supported Operating Systems · Windows XP Home Edition/Professional · Windows 2000 Professional · Windows Millennium Edition (Me) · Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) ­ Preinstalled versions only ­ Only computers with built-in USB ports supported Macintosh Supported Operating Systems · Mac OS X (10.1.5 or later) ­ Only computers with built-in USB ports supported pg. 19 For the latest information on the supported operating systems, see the Nikon websites listed in the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Step2 Transfer pictures pg. 23 12 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Install PictureProject Before Installing PictureProject · Turn off any virus-checking software · Exit all other applications that may be running Note to Users of Other Nikon Software (Nikon View/Nikon Capture) · Uninstall Nikon View before installing PictureProject. For information on using PictureProject with Nikon Capture, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional When installing, using, or uninstalling PictureProject, log on as a "Computer administrator" (Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional) or "Administrators" (Windows 2000 Professional). Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. Install PictureProject Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Install Center program will launch automatically and a "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step ). A language selection dialog will be displayed. Select a language and click Next. If the Install Center Program Does Not Launch Automatically Select My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional; in other versions of Windows, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop) and double-click the CD (PictureProject) icon in the My Computer window. Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 13 Windows Click Easy Install. The standard install includes: · PTP drivers for COOLPIX-series cameras (Windows XP only) · Nikon Mass Storage Camera Drivers (Windows 98SE only) · Panorama Maker · Apple QuickTime 6 · Nikon FotoShare (Europe only) · PictureProject · Microsoft DirectX 9 The first components to be installed are the camera drivers. What drivers are installed depends on the computer's operating system. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PTP driver (on some systems the driver may be installed by a wizard). Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows 2000 Professional/Windows Millennium Edition (Me) No drivers are installed. Proceed to Step . Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Mass Storage Drivers. 14 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Windows The Panorama Maker install wizard will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Click Finish to exit the Panorama Maker install wizard. Installing PictureProject (Windows) Click Yes to install QuickTime. The Nikon FotoShare setup program will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. * Nikon FotoShare is available only in the European release of PictureProject. Click OK to exit the Nikon FotoShare setup program. Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 15 Windows The PictureProject setup program will now start. After reading the license agreement, click Yes to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. The destination folder for PictureProject will be displayed under "Destination Folder." Click Next to install PictureProject to this folder, or click Browse to select another destination. Installing PictureProject (Windows) Click Yes to create a new folder for PictureProject. Click Yes to create a shortcut to PictureProject on the desktop, No to proceed without creating a desktop shortcut. 16 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Windows Click Finish to exit the PictureProject installer.
