Only Nikon brand electronic accessories (including battery chargers, batteries, AC adapters, and Speedlights) certified by Nikon specifically for use with this Nikon digital camera are engineered and proven to operate within the operational and safety requirements of this electronic circuitry. THE USE OF NON-NIKON ELECTRONIC ACCESSORIES COULD DAMAGE THE CAMERA AND MAY VOID YOUR NIKON WARRANTY. The use of third-party rechargeable Li-ion batteries not approved by Nikon could interfere with normal operation of the camera or result in the batteries overheating, igniting, rupturing, or leaking. For more information about Nikon brand accessories, contact a local authorized Nikon dealer. Parts of the Camera The principle camera parts are listed below. See the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography for more information. Mode dial Power-on lamp Power switch Built-in Speedlight Shutter-release button Eyelet for camera strap Memory card slot cover Zoom buttons Green (AF) lamp Red ( ) lamp Multi selector (center)/ (transfer) button (play) button Viewfinder Interface connector cover Monitor Battery-chamber cover Power connector cover for AC adapter kit USB/ Audio/Video (A/V) out connector Battery latch Interface connector cover Battery-chamber cover Parts of the Camera 1 Take Pictures Charge the battery Connect the power cable to the MH-61 battery charger ( ) and insert the wall plug into a power outlet ( ). The CHARGE lamp will light ( ). Charge the battery Remove the terminal cover from EN-EL5 and insert the battery into the MH-61, making sure that the small projection on the battery is inserted into the matching pit on the charger. Charging will begin immediately. The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. 2 Take Pictures Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. An exhausted battery can be fully recharged in about two hours. Read Battery Warnings · For more information on using the EN-EL5 rechargeable Li-ion battery, see the documentation for the battery or the MH-61 battery charger. · Read and follow the battery warnings and cautions on pages i - ii and 128 in the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography, together with any warnings and instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer. Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap securely to the eyelet on the camera body as shown below. Take Pictures 3 Insert the battery Open the battery-chamber cover · Slide the cover in the direction shown in ( ) until it stops and open the cover ( ). Insert the battery · Insert the battery as shown in the label at the entrance to the battery chamber, making sure the positive "+" and negative "­" terminals are in the correct orientation. The small projection on the EN-EL5 battery is on the same side as the negative terminal. Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Ensure the battery is in the correct orientation. Insert the battery · The orange battery latch is pushed aside as the battery is inserted. The latch will close when the battery is fully inserted. Close the battery-chamber cover · Close the cover ( ) and slide it in until it latches ( ). · Be sure that the cover is closed firmly. 4 Take Pictures Turn the camera on Rotate the mode dial to Turn the camera on Turn the camera on Take Pictures 5 Choose a language and set the clock The first time the camera is turned on, a language-selection dialog will be displayed in the monitor. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The multi selector is used to navigate through the camera menus. Move cursor up. Press to make selection. Cancel and return to previous menu, or move cursor left. Move cursor down. Display sub-menu, move cursor right, or make selection. Choose a language and set the clock Highlight Deutsch (German), English, Confirmation dialog displayed. Español (Spanish), Français (French), Highlight Yes. Italiano (Italian), Nederlands (Dutch), Svenska (Swedish), (Japanese), (Simplified Chinese), or (Korean), and press . * To turn daylight saving time on or off, press to highlight DaylightSaving and press . When DaylightSaving is checked, time will automatically be advanced one hour. To return to Step 3, press to highlight current time zone. TIME ZONE menu displayed.* 6 Take Pictures Display map of world time zones. Select home time zone. Display DATE menu. Edit Day (order of Day, Month, and Year may differ in some areas). Choose a language and set the clock Select Month. Repeat steps 7-8 to edit Highlight D M Y. Month, Year, hour, and minutes. Choose order in which Day, Month, and Exit to shooting mode. Year will be displayed. Take Pictures 7 Take pictures Check the indicators in the monitor. Battery level indicator Number of exposures remaining The battery level is shown in the monitor as follows: Display NO ICON Description Battery fully charged. Low battery. If flash fires, monitor turns off while Speedlight recharges. Battery exhausted. Charge or replace with a fully charged battery. Take pictures WARNING!! BATTERY EXHAUSTED Pictures will be stored in the camera's internal memory (capacity: about 12MB) unless a Secure Digital (SD) memory card is inserted in the camera, in which case pictures will be stored on the card. For information on inserting a memory card, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography (see pages 10 - 11). 8 Take Pictures Ready the camera. · Hold the camera steadily with both hands. Don't Block the Shot To avoid dark or partially obscured pictures, keep your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash window. Frame the subject. · Frame the subject in the center of the monitor. · Pictures can be framed in the monitor or the viewfinder. Zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on your subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. Take pictures Zoom out Zoom in Take Pictures 9 Focus. · Press the shutter-release button halfway to set focus and exposure. Red ( ) lamp Focus area Green (AF) lamp Focus indicator The camera automatically selects a focus area containing the subject closest to the camera from five focus areas (default setting in auto shooting mode). Focus area will appear when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. The selected focus area will be displayed in green when the subject is in focus. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check Red ( ) lamp, Green (AF) lamp, focus area, and focus indicator: Take pictures Red ( ) lamp On Blinks Off On: green/green Blinks: green/red Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging. Flash off or not required. Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus on subject. Recompose the picture and try again. Green (AF) lamp/focus area and focus indicator Take the picture. · Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. · To prevent blur, press the shutter-release button down smoothly. The COOLPIX5200 has a two-stage shutter-release button. Pressing the shutter-release button halfway focuses the camera. Pressing the rest of the way down releases the shutter to record a picture. 10 Take Pictures View pictures Press the button. · The most recent picture will be displayed in the monitor. When the camera is off, pressing the button for about two seconds will turn the camera on with a picture displayed in the monitor. View additional pictures. · / : view pictures in the order recorded. · / : view pictures in reverse order. · To return to shooting mode, press the button again. View pictures Turn the camera off. · Press the power switch. · The camera is off when the power-on lamp is off. Now that you have taken a few pictures, you can transfer (copy) them to a computer, where you can view, edit, and organize them. Step2 Transfer pictures pg. 23 12 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Install PictureProject Before Installing PictureProject · Turn off any virus-checking software · Exit all other applications that may be running Note to Users of Other Nikon Software (Nikon View/Nikon Capture) · Uninstall Nikon View before installing PictureProject. For information on using PictureProject with Nikon Capture, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional When installing, using, or uninstalling PictureProject, log on as a "Computer administrator" (Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional) or "Administrators" (Windows 2000 Professional). Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. Install PictureProject Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Install Center program will launch automatically and a "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step ). A language selection dialog will be displayed. Select a language and click Next. If the Install Center Program Does Not Launch Automatically Select My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional; in other versions of Windows, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop) and double-click the CD (PictureProject) icon in the My Computer window. Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 13 Windows Click Easy Install. The standard install includes: · PTP drivers for COOLPIX-series cameras (Windows XP only) · Nikon Mass Storage Camera Drivers (Windows 98SE only) · Panorama Maker · Apple QuickTime 6 · Nikon FotoShare (Europe only) · PictureProject · Microsoft DirectX 9 The first components to be installed are the camera drivers. What drivers are installed depends on the computer's operating system. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PTP driver (on some systems the driver may be installed by a wizard). Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows 2000 Professional/Windows Millennium Edition (Me) No drivers are installed. Proceed to Step . Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Mass Storage Drivers. 14 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Windows The Panorama Maker install wizard will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Click Finish to exit the Panorama Maker install wizard. Installing PictureProject (Windows) Click Yes to install QuickTime. The Nikon FotoShare setup program will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. * Nikon FotoShare is available only in the European release of PictureProject. Click OK to exit the Nikon FotoShare setup program. Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 15 Windows The PictureProject setup program will now start. After reading the license agreement, click Yes to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. The destination folder for PictureProject will be displayed under "Destination Folder." Click Next to install PictureProject to this folder, or click Browse to select another destination. Installing PictureProject (Windows) Click Yes to create a new folder for PictureProject. Click Yes to create a shortcut to PictureProject on the desktop, No to proceed without creating a desktop shortcut. 16 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Windows Click Finish to exit the PictureProject installer. Panorama Maker requires DirectX version 8.1 or later. If an earlier version is installed, the dialog shown below will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9. Installing PictureProject (Windows) Click Finish or Yes to restart the computer. Dialog displayed if DirectX is not installed Dialog displayed if DirectX is installed Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 17 Windows When the computer restarts, the PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Source location Start button Advanced... button Cancel button The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. To proceed without cataloging existing pictures, click Cancel (existing pictures can be cataloged manually at any time; see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD) for details). To catalog existing pictures, click Advanced... to choose the desired source location and then click Start (note that some time may be required to catalog all pictures if the selected location contains a large number of images). When all pictures in the source location have been cataloged, a notification dialog will be displayed; click Finish to exit the Import Assistant. For more information on importing pictures into PictureProject, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). After exiting the Import Assistant, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. Installing PictureProject (Windows) This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer as described on page 23. 18 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) Mac OS X When installing, using or uninstalling PictureProject, log in to the "Admin" account. Turn the computer on and wait for it to start up. Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. Double-click the PictureProject installer CD icon on the desktop, then double-click the Welcome icon. The "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step ). Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) A language-selection dialog will be displayed; select a language and click Next. Click Easy Install to begin installation of the following software: · Panorama Maker · PictureProject · Apple QuickTime 6 (QuickTime 6 will not be installed if QuickTime 6 or later is already installed on the computer) Once installation is complete, European users can install Nikon FotoShare by copying the "FotoShare" icon to the hard disk (Step ). Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 19 Macintosh The Panorama Maker installer will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Click OK to complete installation of Panorama Maker. The message shown at left will be displayed (Europe only; users in other areas can proceed directly to Step ). Click OK. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) Enter your administrator name and password and click OK. The PictureProject installer will start. Click Install. 20 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Macintosh The dialog shown at left will be displayed. Click Yes. Click Yes to add PictureProject to the Dock. Click Quit to complete installation of PictureProject. Apple QuickTime 6 If an earlier version of QuickTime is installed, the QuickTime 6 installer will start automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. When the dialog shown at left is displayed, click Continue. Do not complete the "Registered To," "Organization," and "Registration Number" fields. On some systems, the QuickTime installer may require considerable time to complete installation. Click Restart to restart the computer. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is not installed Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is installed Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 21 Macintosh When the computer restarts, log in to the "Admin" account. The PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Source location Cancel button Advanced... button Start button The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. To proceed without cataloging existing pictures, click Cancel (existing pictures can be cataloged manually at any time; see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD) for details). After exiting the Import Assistant, open the "FotoShare" folder on the PictureProject installer CD and install Nikon FotoShare by dragging the Nikon FotoShare icon to the "Applications" folder on the hard disk (note that FotoShare is included only with the European release of PictureProject). When copying is complete, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer as described on the following page. 22 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Transfer pictures Before Connecting the Camera Pictures can be copied from the camera to the computer by: · Clicking the Transfer button in PictureProject (page 26) · Pressing the (Transfer ) button on the camera (page 26) Which method you will use depends on your computer's operating system and the USB option selected in the camera setup menu. After consulting the following table, select the appropriate option using the USB item in the camera setup menu. The default option is Mass storage. Pictures transferred using: Camera PictureProject Transfer (transfer ) button button Choose Mass storage or PTP. Operating system Windows XP Home Edition Windows XP Professional Windows 2000 Professional Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later Choose Mass storage. Transfer pictures Choose PTP. Choose Mass storage or PTP. Choosing a USB Option Select mode. Highlight USB. Display USB menu. Highlight PTP or Mass storage. Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 23 Make selection. Transferring Pictures Turn the camera off. Use a Reliable Power Source When transferring pictures between the camera and the computer, use a fullycharged EN-EL5 battery. If in doubt, charge the battery before beginning transfer or use an EH-62A AC adapter kit (available separately). Do not, under any circumstances, use another make or model of AC adapter. Transferring Picture on a Memory Card · Turn the camera off and insert a memory card. · Pictures can not be transferred using the camera (Transfer ) button when the memory card write protect switch is in the "lock" position. Set the switch to the "write" position before transfer. Transfer pictures For information on inserting a memory card, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography (see pages 10 - 11). Connecting the Camera to a Computer Be sure to install PictureProject before connecting the camera to your computer. If the Add New Hardware Wizard is displayed when the camera is connected, click Cancel to exit the wizard. Turn the computer on and wait for the operating system to start up. Connect the camera to the computer as shown in the illustration, using the USB cable provided. Connect the camera directly to the computer; do not use a USB hub or keyboard. UC-E6 USB cable 24 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Turn the camera on The camera will automatically be recognized and registered as a new device. Once the camera has been registered, the PictureProject Transfer will be displayed in the computer monitor. The camera monitor will remain blank. Windows (illustration shows dialog displayed when Mass storage is selected for USB; when PTP is selected, camera is displayed in place of memory card icon) Macintosh AutoPlay (Windows XP Home Edition/Professional) A dialog similar to that shown at left will be displayed when the camera is turned on (if the USB option in the camera setup menu is set to Mass storage, a "Removable Disk" dialog will be displayed; otherwise the dialog will show the camera name). Select Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using PictureProject and click OK to start PictureProject. To bypass this dialog in the future, check Always do the selected action. See the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD) for information on what to do if PictureProject Transfer fails to start automatically. Transfer pictures Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 25 Click the Transfer button in the PictureProject Transfer. All pictures in the internal memory or on the memory card will be transferred to your computer. Windows Macintosh The Camera (Transfer ) Button Pictures marked with an ferred using the camera icon can also be trans(Transfer ) button. When the (Transfer ) button is pressed, the following messages will be displayed in the camera monitor. Transfer pictures Before using the camera (Transfer ) button to transfer pictures in Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later, set the USB option in the camera setup menu to PTP (see pages 23 - 24). During Transfer While transfer is in progress, do not: · · · · Disconnect the USB cable Turn the camera off Remove the battery or the memory card Disconnect the AC adapter kit Failure to observe this precaution could interfere with normal functioning of both the camera and the computer. 26 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures When transfer is complete, the pictures will be displayed in the PictureProject window. Windows Transfer pictures Macintosh Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures 27 Disconnect the camera Once your pictures are displayed in PictureProject, transfer is complete and you can disconnect the camera. If PTP is selected in the USB menu (see pages 23 - 24): Turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable. If you have not changed the USB setting from its default setting of Mass storage: Before turning the camera off or disconnecting the USB cable, remove the camera from the system as described below. Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device from the menu that appears. Windows 2000 Professional Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Stop USB Mass Storage Device from the menu that appears. Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon ( ) in the taskbar and select Stop USB Disk from the menu that appears. Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) In My Computer, click with the right mouse button on the removable disk corresponding to the camera and select Eject from the menu that appears. Transfer pictures 28 Install PictureProject and Transfer Pictures Mac OS X Drag the "NO_NAME" camera volume into the Trash. Transfer pictures You have now taken pictures and copied them to your computer. This completes the COOLPIX 5200 Quick Start Guide.
