The type of batteries provided depends on the area, country or region where the camera was purchased. · This guide will abbreviate the COOLPIX5600 and COOLPIX4600 product names to E5600 and E4600 respectively. Step 1 Charge the batteries 1 Connect the power cable to the MH-71 battery charger and insert the wall plug into a power outlet . The CHARGE lamp will light . 2 Charge the batteries Insert a pair of EN-MH1 batteries as indicated on the charger. 3 The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. 4 Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. An exhausted battery can be fully recharged in about two hours. 2 Take Pictures Replacing Batteries Important Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp has gone out before removing or inserting batteries. Read Battery Warnings Read and follow all warnings and instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer. Damaged Batteries The following batteries can not be used: · Batteries with peeling or damaged insulation. Using batteries with damaged insulation could result in leakage, overheating, or rupture. Note that due to manufacturing defects even new batteries may have faulty insulation. · Batteries with insulation that covers only the sides of the battery and not the area around the negative terminal. · Batteries with a flat negative terminal. Do not use such batteries even if the insulation adequately covers the area around the negative terminal. Charge the batteries Alkaline Batteries Performance of alkaline batteries may vary greatly depending on the manufacturer. Choose a reliable brand. EN-MH1 Batteries Using an MH-71 battery charger, charge EN-MH1 batteries before first use. Charge each pair of batteries at the same time - do not charge batteries one at a time or mix batteries with different charges. Note that EN-MH1 batteries may discharge quickly immediately after purchase or after the batteries have been left unused for an extended period. This is normal, and the batteries will retain a charge for longer periods after being used and recharged several times. For more information on charging batteries, see the documentation provided with the MH-71. Alternative Power Sources · The camera can also be used with two ZR6 (AA) nickel-manganese batteries or two FR6/L91 (AA) lithium batteries. · To power the camera continuously for extended periods, use an EH-62B AC adapter. Do not, under any circumstances, use another make or model of AC adapter. Failure to observe this precaution could result in overheating or in damage to the camera. Take Pictures 3 Step 2 Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap securely to the eyelet on the camera body as shown below. Step 3 Insert the batteries 1 1 2 3 Attach the camera strap/Insert the batteries Open the battery-chamber cover Slide the battery-chamber cover latch as illustrated ( ), pull the battery-chamber cover ( ) and open ( ). 2 Insert the batteries Insert the batteries as shown in the label inside the battery chamber. 3 1 2 Close the battery-chamber cover Close the battery-chamber cover ( ) and slide it in until it latches ( ). Be sure that the batterychamber cover is properly latched. 4 Take Pictures Step 4 Turn the camera on 1 Rotate the mode dial to P Mode dial 2 Turn the camera on Turn the camera on Battery Type Important inserted in the camera in the SET-UP menu. The default setting is the type of the included batteries. When any other type of battery is used, change the setting. Take Pictures To improve battery performance, select the type of battery currently 5 Step 5 Choose a language and set the clock The first time the camera is turned on, a language-selection dialog will be displayed in the monitor. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The multi selector is used to navigate through the camera menus. Move cursor up Press center (I) to make selection Cancel and return to previous menu, or move cursor left Move cursor down Display sub-menu, move cursor right, or make selection. 1 :Cancel :Set Highlight Deutsch (German), English, Español (Spanish), Français (French), Italiano (Italian), Nederlands (Dutch), Svenska (Swedish), (Japanese), (Simplified Chinese), (Traditional Chinese), or (Korean) and press I. Choose a language and set the clock 2 DATE Set time and date? No Yes :Set 3 DATE Set time and date? No Yes :Set Confirmation dialog displayed. Confirm Yes is highlighted. Press I. To turn daylight saving time on or off, press the multi selector down to highlight DaylightSaving and press I. When DaylightSaving is checked, time will automatically be advanced one hour. Take Pictures 7 Step 6 Take pictures Storing Pictures Pictures will be stored in the camera's internal memory (capacity: about 14 MB) unless a Secure Digital (SD) memory card is inserted in the camera, in which case pictures will be stored on the card. For information on inserting a memory card, see the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the E5600/E4600 (P.10). 1 Check indicators in the monitor. Replace with new or fully charged batteries. 8 Take Pictures 2 Ready the camera Hold the camera steadily in both hands. 5M AUTO 10 Don't Block the Shot To avoid dark or partially obscured pictures, keep your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash window. 3 Frame the subject Frame the subject in the center of the monitor. Pictures can be framed in the monitor or the viewfinder. Take pictures Zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on your subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. 5M AUTO 10 Zoom out Zoom in Take Pictures 9 4 Focus Press the shutter-release button halfway to set focus and exposure. Focus and exposure will lock while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Red (!) lamp Green (AF) lamp AF Focus indicator 5M AUTO 10 With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash: Take pictures Red (!) lamp ! On Blinks Off On Blinks Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging. Flash off or not required. Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus on subject at center of frame. Using focus lock, focus on another subject at same distance, then recompose picture and shoot. Green (AF) lamp/ focus indicator Monitor turns off while flash is charging. 5 Take the picture Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. To prevent blur, press the shutter-release button down smoothly. The E5600/E4600 has a two-stage shutter-release button. Pressing the shutterrelease button halfway focuses the camera. Pressing it the rest of the way down releases the shutter to record a picture. 10 Take Pictures Step 7 View pictures 1 Press the x button A picture will be displayed in the monitor. When the camera is off, pressing the x button for about one second will turn the camera on with a picture displayed in the monitor. 5M AUTO 10 2 2005.05.01 13:00 100NIKON 0001.JPG 5M 1 1 View additional pictures Press the multi selector down or right to view pictures in the order recorded, up or left to view pictures in reverse order. Keep the multi selector pressed to scroll quickly to the desired frame. To return to shooting mode, press the x button again. View pictures 3 Turn the camera off Press the power switch. The camera is off when the power-on lamp is off. Now that you've taken a few pictures, you can transfer (copy) them to a computer, where you can view, edit, and organize them. If the USB cable provided with the camera is used to connect the camera to a printer that supports PictBridge, you can transfer pictures to the printer and print them directly from the camera. Step 2 Transfer pictures pg. 23 12 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Step 1 Install PictureProject Before Installing PictureProject · Turn off any virus-checking software · Exit all other applications that may be running · If PictureProject 1.0 or 1.0.1 for another COOLPIX model is already installed, uninstall it. Note to Users of Other Nikon Software (Nikon View/Nikon Capture) Uninstall Nikon View before installing PictureProject. For information on using PictureProject with Nikon Capture, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Install PictureProject Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 13 Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional Important When installing, using, or uninstalling PictureProject, log on as a "Computer administrator" (Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional) or "Administrators" (Windows 2000 Professional). 1 2 Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Install Center program will launch automatically and a "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step 3.) A language selection dialog will be displayed. Select a language and click Next. 3 Installing PictureProject (Windows) If the Install Center Program Does Not Launch Automatically Select My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional; in other versions of Windows, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop) and double-click the CD (PictureProject) icon in the My Computer window. 14 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Windows 4 Click Easy Install. The standard install includes: · PTP drivers for COOLPIX-series cameras (Windows XP only) · Nikon Mass Storage Camera Drivers (Windows 98SE only) · Panorama Maker · Apple QuickTime 6 · Nikon FotoShare (Europe only) · PictureProject · Microsoft DirectX 9 5 The first components to be installed are the camera drivers. What drivers are installed depends on the computer's operating system. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PTP driver (on some systems the driver may be installed by a wizard). Installing PictureProject (Windows) Windows 2000 Professional/Windows Millennium Edition (Me) No drivers are installed. Proceed to Step 6. Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Mass Storage Drivers. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 15 Windows 6 The Panorama Maker install wizard will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. 7 Click Finish to exit the Panorama Maker install wizard. 8 Installing PictureProject (Windows) Click Yes to install QuickTime. 9 The Nikon FotoShare setup program will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. * Nikon FotoShare is available only in the European release of PictureProject. 10 Click OK to exit the Nikon FotoShare setup program. 11 The PictureProject setup program will now start. After reading the license agreement, click Yes to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. 16 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Windows 12 The destination folder for PictureProject will be displayed under "Destination Folder." Click Next to install PictureProject to this folder, or click Browse to select another destination. 13 Click Yes to create a new folder for PictureProject. 14 Click Yes to create a shortcut to PictureProject on the desktop, No to proceed without creating a desktop shortcut. Click Finish to exit the PictureProject installer. 15 Installing PictureProject (Windows) 16 Panorama Maker requires DirectX version 8.1 or later. If an earlier version is installed, the dialog shown below will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 17 Windows 17 Click Finish or Yes to restart the computer. Dialog displayed if DirectX is not installed Dialog displayed if DirectX is installed 18 When the computer restarts, the PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Select import folder pop-up menu Source location Close button Import button Installing PictureProject (Windows) The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. To proceed without cataloging existing pictures, click Close (existing pictures can be cataloged manually at any time; see the PictureProject Reference Manual for details). To catalog existing pictures, use Select import folder pop-up menu to choose the desired source location and then click Import (note that some time may be required to catalog all pictures if the selected location contains a large number of images). When all pictures in the source location have been cataloged, a notification dialog will be displayed; click Finish to exit the Import Assistant. For more information on importing pictures into PictureProject, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). 19 After exiting the Import Assistant, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer. 18 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) Mac OS X Important "Admin" account. When installing, using or uninstalling PictureProject, log in to the 1 2 Turn the computer on and wait for it to start up. Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. Double-click the PictureProject installer CD icon on the desktop, then double-click the Welcome icon. The "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step 3.) A language-selection dialog will be displayed; select a language and click Next. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) 3 4 Click Easy Install to begin installation of the following software: · Panorama Maker · PictureProject · Apple QuickTime 6 (QuickTime 6 will not be installed if QuickTime 6 or later is already installed on the computer) Once installation is complete, European users can install Nikon FotoShare by copying the "FotoShare" icon to the hard disk (Step 15). Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 19 Macintosh 5 The Panorama Maker installer will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. 6 7 Click OK to complete installation of Panorama Maker. The message shown at right will be displayed (Europe only; users in other areas can proceed directly to Step 8). Click OK. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) 8 Enter your administrator name and password and click OK. 9 The PictureProject installer will start. Click Install. 10 The dialog shown at right will be displayed. Click Yes. 20 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Macintosh 11 Click Yes to add PictureProject to the Dock. 12 Click Quit to complete installation of PictureProject. Apple QuickTime 6 If an earlier version of QuickTime is installed, the QuickTime 6 installer will start automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. When the dialog shown at right is displayed, click Continue. Do not complete the "Registered To," "Organization," and "Registration Number" fields. On some systems, the QuickTime installer may require considerable time to complete installation. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) 13 Click Restart to restart the computer. Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is not installed Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is installed Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 21 Macintosh 14 When the computer restarts, log in to the "Admin" account. The PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Select import folder pop-up menu Source location Import button Close button The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. Installing PictureProject (Macintosh) For more information on importing pictures into PictureProject, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). 15 After exiting the Import Assistant, open the "FotoShare" folder on the PictureProject installer CD and install Nikon FotoShare by dragging the "FotoShare" icon to the "Applications" folder on the hard disk (note that FotoShare is included only with the European release of PictureProject). When copying is complete, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer. 22 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Step 2 Transfer Pictures Before Connecting the Camera Pictures can be copied from the camera to the computer by: · Clicking the Transfer button in PictureProject (page 26) · Pressing the I (V) button on the camera (page 26) Which method you will use depends on your computer's operating system and the USB option selected in the SET-UP menu of the camera. After consulting the following table, select the appropriate option using the USB item in the SET-UP menu of the camera. The default option is Mass storage. Use the PictureProject Transfer button. · When transferring pictures from the camera memory and Mass storage is selected for the USB option · When the memory card write-protect switch is in the "lock" position. Unlock by sliding the switch to the "write" position before transferring pictures. Use a Reliable Power Source When transferring pictures between the camera and the computer, use fully charged EN-MH1 batteries. If in doubt, charge the battery before beginning transfer or use an EH-62B AC adapter kit (available separately). Do not, under any circumstances, use another make or model of AC adapter. Connecting the Camera to a Computer Important computer. If the Add New Hardware Wizard is displayed when the camera is connected, click Cancel to exit the wizard. Be sure to install PictureProject before connecting the camera to your 24 Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 2 Turn the computer on and wait for the operating system to start up. Connect the camera to the computer as shown in the illustration, using the USB cable provided. UC-E6 USB cable USB Hub The camera may not function as expected when connection via a USB hub or keyboard.
