PictureProject Installer CD PictureProject Reference Manual CD 2 Charge the battery Take pictures Step 1 Charge the battery 1 Connect the power cable Connect the power cable to the supplied MH-56 battery charger ( 1 ) and insert the wall plug into a power outlet ( 2 ). The CHARGE lamp will light to show that the charger is on ( 3 ). 2 3 1 2 Insert the battery Remove the terminal cover from the EN-EL7 and slide the battery into the MH-56 terminals first. The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. 3 3 Charge the battery Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. An exhausted battery can be fully recharged in about two and a halfhours. Charge the battery / Attach the camera strap Step 2 Attach the camera strap Attach the camera strap securely to the two eyelets on the camera body as shown below. The Lens Cap When replacing or removing the lens cap, press the tabs on either side of the cap to release the latch ( 1 ). To avoid losing the lens cap, use the cord provided to attach it to the camera as shown ( 2 ). 1 2 4 Insert the battery Take pictures Step 3 Insert the battery 1 Open the battery-chamber cover After confirming that the camera is off, slide the battery-chamber cover latch ) to the position ( 1 ) and flip the ( battery-chamber cover open ( 2 ). 1 2 2 Insert the battery Insert a fully-charged EN-EL7 battery as shown in the label inside the batterychamber cover, making sure the positive ("+") and negative ("­") terminals are in the correct orientation. Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation. 3 Close the battery-chamber cover Close the cover ( 1 ) and slide the latch ( ) to the position ( 2 ). Be sure that the battery-chamber cover is properly latched. 2 1 Take pictures 5 Insert a memory card Step 4 Insert a memory card 1 Open the memory card slot cover Open the memory card slot cover ( 1 ). A yellow notice describing memory card insertion is placed in the memory card slot at shipment. Remove the notice and read the instructions ( 2 ). Upside down 2 1 2 Insert a memory card Check that the eject button is all the way down ( 1 ) and then insert a memory card as shown in the label inside the memory card slot cover ( 2 ). 2 1 Sideways Do not insert Direction of Insertion Insert memory cards terminals first. Inserting the card upside down or backwards could damage the camera or the card. Check to be sure the card is in the correct orientation. Terminals Upside down Front label 3 Close the memory card slot cover 6 Turn the camera on Take pictures Step 5 Turn the camera on 1 Open the monitor 1 2 3 4 5 2 3 Remove the lens cap and ro(auto tate the mode dial to mode) Turn the camera on Auto Power Off If no operations are performed for about 1 minute (the default setting), the camera will enter standby mode and display will turn off automatically to save , , or butpower. The display can be reactivated by pressing the ton, rotating the mode dial to a new position, or pressing the shutter-release button halfway. Take pictures 7 Choose a language and set the clock Step 6 Choose a language and set the clock The first time the camera is turned on, a language-selection dialog will be displayed in the monitor. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The multi selector is used to navigate the camera menus. When DaylightSaving is checked, time will automatically be advanced one hour. Before proceeding to Step 7, press multi selector up to highlight current time zone. Exit to shooting mode. 126 Take pictures 9 Format the memory card Step 7 Format the memory card Memory cards must be formatted before first use. Follow the steps below to format the card. 1 Rotate the mode dial to SET UP The setup menu will be displayed. Mode dial Note that formatting memory cards permanently deletes any data they may contain. Do not proceed to Step 8 until formatting is complete. 10 Take pictures Take pictures Step 8 Take pictures The steps below explain how to take pictures in auto mode, an automatic "point and shoot" mode in which most settings are controlled by the camera. 1 Rotate the mode dial to and check indicators in the monitor Battery level indicator (displayed when battery is running low) Mode dial Number of exposures remaining Battery level indicator Battery level is shown as follows: Display NO ICON Status Notes Battery fully charged. No pictures can be taken until Battery exhausted. battery has been recharged or replaced. WARNING!! BATTERY EXHAUSTED Take pictures 11 Take pictures 2 Ready the camera Hold the camera steadily in both hands. Don't Block the Shot To avoid muffled sound or dark or partially obscured pictures, keep fingers and other objects away from the microphone, lens, built-in Speedlight, and AF-assist illuminator LED. If the subject is too dark, the built-in Speedlight will pop up automatically. Be careful not obstruct the Speedlight. A warning will appear in the monitor or viewfinder if the Speedlight is prevented from popping up. Before shooting, check that vibration reduction (VR) is on. Vibration reduction reduces blurring caused by camera shake and stabilizes the view through the lens in the shooting display. 12 Take pictures 3 Frame the subject Position the subject in the center of the frame. Pictures can be framed in the monitor or the viewfinder. (monitor) button Press the button to toggle between the monitor and viewfinder. Take pictures Zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. Viewfinder Focus If the image in the electronic viewfinder seems blurred, rotate the diopter adjustment control until the image is in sharp focus. When operating the diopter control with your eye to the viewfinder, care should be taken to avoid accidentally putting your finger in your eye. Take pictures 13 Take pictures 4 Focus Press the shutter-release button halfway to set focus and exposure. Focus and exposure will lock while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Focus indicator Flash indicator With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check the focus and flash indicators in the monitor or electronic viewfinder: Focus indicator (green) Flash indicator (red) On Blinks On Blinks Off Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus on subject at center of frame. Using focus lock, focus on another subject at same distance, then recompose picture and shoot. Built-in Speedlight will fire when picture is taken. Built-in Speedlight is charging. Built-in Speedlight is off or not required. 5 Take the picture Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. To prevent blur, press the shutter-release button down smoothly. The camera has a two-stage shutter-release button. Press the shutter-release button halfway to focus. Press it the rest of the way down to release the shutter and record a picture. 14 View pictures Take pictures Step 9 View pictures 1 Press the button A picture will be displayed in the monitor. (quick review) button Press once Press twice Press the button once to display images in top left corner of monitor, twice to view images full screen. 2 View additional pictures Press the multi selector down or right to view pictures in the order recorded, up or left to view pictures in reverse order. To end image review, press the shutter release button halfway. Press the shutter-release button all the way down to take a picture. Turn the camera off The lens will retract and the camera displays will turn off. View previous picture View next picture 3 Now that you've taken a few pictures, you can transfer (copy) them to a computer, where they can be viewed, edited, and organized. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Pictures taken with the COOLPIX 8800 can be transferred to a computer as described below. 15 Install PictureProject Step 1 Install PictureProject Windows Supported Operating Systems Windows XP Home Edition / Professional Windows 2000 Professional Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) · Preinstalled versions only · Only computers with built-in USB ports supported pg. 17 Macintosh Supported Operating Systems Mac OS X (10.1.5 or later) pg. 23 · Only computers with built-in USB ports supported · For more information on supported operating systems, visit http://nikonimaging.com/ See the back cover for detailed system requirements. Step 2 Transfer pictures RAW Pictures pg. 28 RAW pictures are supported from PictureProject version 1.0.1. An update dialog will be displayed when PictureProject runs for the first time; follow the on-screen instructions to update to version 1.0.1. 16 Step 1 Install PictureProject Install PictureProject Before Installing PictureProject · Turn off any virus-checking software · Exit all other applications that may be running Note to Users of Other Nikon Software (Nikon View/Nikon Capture) Uninstall Nikon View before installing PictureProject. For information on using PictureProject with Nikon Capture, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Installing PictureProject 17 Windows Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional Important When installing, using, or uninstalling PictureProject, log on as a "Computer administrator" (Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional) or "Administrators" (Windows 2000 Professional). 1 2 Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. The Install Center program will launch automatically and a "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step 3 ). Windows 3 A language selection dialog will be displayed. Select a language and click Next. If the Install Center Program Does Not Launch Automatically Select My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP Home Edition/ Windows XP Professional; in other versions of Windows, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop) and double-click the CD (PictureProject) icon in the "My Computer" window. 18 4 Click Easy Install. The standard install includes: · PTP drivers for COOLPIX-series cameras (Windows XP only) · Nikon Mass Storage Camera Drivers (Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) only) · Panorama Maker · Apple QuickTime 6 · Nikon FotoShare (Europe only) · PictureProject · Microsoft DirectX 9 The first components to be installed are the camera drivers. What drivers are installed depends on the computer's operating system. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional Follow the on-screen instructions to install the PTP driver (on some systems the driver may be installed by a wizard). Install PictureProject Windows 5 Windows 2000 Professional/Windows Millennium Edition (Me) No drivers are installed. Proceed to Step 6. Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Mass Storage Drivers. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 19 Install PictureProject 6 The Panorama Maker install wizard will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. 7 Click Finish to exit the Panorama Maker install wizard. 8 9 10 11 Click Yes to install QuickTime 6. The Nikon FotoShare setup program will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Windows * Nikon FotoShare is available only in the European release of PictureProject. Click OK to exit the Nikon FotoShare setup program. The PictureProject setup program will now start. After reading the license agreement, click Yes to accept the agreement and proceed with installation. 20 12 The destination folder for PictureProject will be displayed under "Destination Folder." Click Next to install PictureProject to this folder, or click Browse to select another destination. Install PictureProject Windows 13 14 15 Click Yes to create a new folder for PictureProject. Click Yes to create a shortcut to PictureProject on the desktop, No to proceed without creating a desktop shortcut. Click Finish to exit the PictureProject installer. 16 Panorama Maker requires DirectX version 8.1 or later. If an earlier version is installed, the dialog shown at right will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 21 Install PictureProject 17 Click Finish or Yes to restart the computer. Dialog displayed if DirectX is not installed Dialog displayed if DirectX is installed 18 When the computer restarts, the PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Source location Start button Advanced... button Cancel button The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. To proceed without cataloging existing pictures, click Cancel (existing pictures can be cataloged manually at any time; see the PictureProject reference manual for details). To catalog existing pictures, click Advanced... to choose the desired source location and then click Start (note that some time may be required to catalog all pictures if the selected location contains a large number of images). When all pictures in the source location have been cataloged, a notification dialog will be displayed; click Finish to exit the Import Assistant. For more information on importing pictures into PictureProject, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Windows 22 19 After exiting the Import Assistant, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. Install PictureProject Windows This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer as described on page 28. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures Installing PictureProject Mac OS X Important 23 Install PictureProject Macintosh When installing, using or uninstalling PictureProject, log in to the "Admin" account. 1 2 Turn the computer on and wait for it to start up. Insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. Double-click the PictureProject installer CD icon on the desktop, then double-click the Welcome icon. The "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step 3 ). 3 4 A language-selection dialog will be displayed; select a language and click Next. Click Easy Install to begin installation of the following software: · Panorama Maker · PictureProject · Apple QuickTime 6 (QuickTime 6 will not be installed if QuickTime 6 or later is already installed on the computer) Once installation is complete, European users can install Nikon FotoShare by copying the "FotoShare" icon to the hard disk (Step 16 ). Macintosh 24 5 The Panorama Maker installer will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Install PictureProject Macintosh Macintosh 6 7 Click OK to complete installation of Panorama Maker. The message shown at right will be displayed (Europe only; users in other areas can proceed directly to Step 8 ). Click OK. 8 9 Enter your administrator name and password and click OK. The PictureProject license agreement will be displayed. After reading the license agreement, click Accept to accept the terms and conditions of the agreement and view the ReadMe file. Take a few moments to read this file, which may contain important information that could not be included in this manual. After viewing the ReadMe file, click Continue to proceed with installation. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 25 Install PictureProject 10 The PictureProject installer will start. Click Install. 11 12 13 The dialog shown at right will be displayed. Click Yes to have PictureProject start automatically when the camera is connected. Click Yes to add PictureProject to the Dock. Click Quit to complete installation of PictureProject. Apple QuickTime 6 If an earlier version of QuickTime is installed, the QuickTime 6 installer will start automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. When the dialog shown at right is displayed, click Continue. Do not complete the "Registered To," "Organization," and "Registration Number" fields. On some systems, the QuickTime installer may require considerable time to complete installation. Macintosh 26 14 Click Restart to restart the computer. Install PictureProject Macintosh Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is not installed Dialog displayed if QuickTime 6 is installed 15 When the computer restarts, log in to the "Admin" account. The PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. Source location Cancel button Advanced... button Start button The Import Assistant is used to catalog pictures already on the computer for display in PictureProject. To proceed without cataloging existing pictures, click Cancel (existing pictures can be cataloged manually at any time; see the PictureProject reference manual for details). To catalog existing pictures, click Advanced... to choose the desired source location and then click Start (note that some time may be required to catalog all pictures if the selected location contains a large number of images). When all pictures in the source location have been cataloged, a notification dialog will be displayed; click Finish to exit the Import Assistant. For more information on importing pictures into PictureProject, see the PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD). Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 27 Install PictureProject 16 After exiting the Import Assistant, open the "FotoShare" folder on the PictureProject installer CD and install Nikon FotoShare by dragging the Nikon FotoShare icon to the "Applications" folder on the hard disk (note that FotoShare is included only with the European release of PictureProject). When copying is complete, remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. Macintosh This completes installation of PictureProject. The next step is to transfer pictures to your computer as described on the following page. 28 Step 2 Transfer pictures Transfer pictures Use a Reliable Power Source When transferring pictures between the camera and the computer, use a fullycharged EN-EL7 battery. If in doubt, charge the battery before beginning transfer or use an EH-54 AC adapter (available separately). Do not, under any circumstances, use another make or model of AC adapter. 1 Turn the camera off and insert a memory card as described on page 5. Connecting the Camera to a Computer Important Be sure to install PictureProject before connecting the camera to your computer. If the Add New Hardware Wizard is displayed when the camera is connected, click Cancel to exit the wizard. 2 Turn the computer on and wait for the operating system to start up. Connect the camera to the computer as shown in the illustration, using the USB cable provided. Connect the camera directly to the computer; do not use a USB hub or keyboard. UC-E6 USB cable The camera digital I/O connector is on a slight angle. Match this angle when connecting the USB cable. USB Hub The camera may not function as expected when connected via a USB hub or keyboard. Install PictureProject and transfer pictures 29 Transfer picturaes 3 Turn the camera on The camera will automatically be recognized and registered as a new device. Once the camera has been registered, the PictureProject Transfer will be displayed in the computer monitor. The camera monitor will remain blank. Windows Macintosh AutoPlay (Windows XP Home Edition/Professional) A dialog similar to that shown at right will be displayed when the camera is turned on (if the USB option in the camera setup menu is set to Mass Storage, a "Removable Disk" dialog will be displayed; otherwise the dialog will show the camera name). Select Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using PictureProject and click OK to start PictureProject. To bypass this dialog in the future, check Always do the selected action. See the PictureProject reference manual for information on what to do if PictureProject Transfer fails to start automatically. 30 4
