They have a lower capacity than batteries purchased separately. NOTE: Memory card not provided. See page 102 of the User's Manual for a list of approved memory cards. Viewing the Camera User's Manual on CD The User's Manual can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. 1 Start the computer and insert the User's Manual CD. 2 Double-click the CD (COOLPIX L11L10) icon in My Computer (Windows) or on the desktop (Macintosh). 3 Double-click the [INDEX.pdf] icon to display a language selection screen. Click a language and follow the links to view the User's Manual. 2 First Steps Step 1 Attach the Camera Strap Attach the camera strap as shown. Step 2 Insert the Batteries Insert the batteries as described below. 2.1 Open the battery-chamber cover. 2 3 1 2.2 Insert the batteries correctly as shown at right. Illustrations and Screen Displays Illustrations and screen displays shown in this guide are for COOLPIX L11. COOLPIX L11 and COOLPIX L10 differ in the Image mode. The default setting for COOLPIX L11 is c Normal, and d Normal for COOLPIX L10. 3 First Steps 2.3 Close the battery-chamber cover. 1 2 Replacing Batteries Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp and the monitor have gone out before removing or inserting the batteries. When replacing the batteries, check that the correct type is selected in the [Battery Type] menu as described on page 101 of the User's Manual. The default option is [Alkaline]. Step 3 Turn On the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will light for a moment, and the monitor will turn on. Power Saving Function If no operations are performed for about five seconds, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about 30 seconds, the monitor will turn off; after a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. 4 First Steps Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory. If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording and deletion only if no memory card inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 If the power-on lamp is blinking or monitor is turned on, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the memory card slot cover and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown below; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover. Use the multi selector to highlight No [Format] and press d. Do not turn the camera Format off or remove the battery or memory card until formatting is complete. Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp and the monitor have gone out. Open the memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand. 5 First Steps Step 4 Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Multi Selector Use the multi selector to choose and apply settings. Move cursor up Make selection Return to previous screen (Move cursor left) Move cursor down Move to next screen (Move cursor right or make selection) In the descriptions that follow, how to use the multi selector to perform a task are shown in white. 4.1 4.2 Date Set time and date? Choose the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed and press d. · The settings are applied and monitor display returns to the L (auto) mode. When daylight saving time ends, turn [Daylight saving] off from the date menu in the setup menu. The camera's clock is automatically set back one hour. Page 90 of the User's Manual 7 Taking Pictures Step 1 Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. L (auto) mode M is displayed in M (auto) mode. To select other shooting modes, use the mode selector (c 14). Pages 8, 16 to 21 of the User's Manual Internal memory indicator Pictures will be recorded to internal memory (approximately 7 MB). When memory card is inserted, M clears and pictures will be recorded to memory card. L 5 Number of exposures remaining Battery level indicator NO INDICATOR Batteries fully charged. Page 74 of the User's Manual c: This icon indicates that more information is available elsewhere in this guide. 8 Taking Pictures Step 2 Ready the Camera Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, and microphone. Step 3 Frame a Picture Frame the subject near the center of the monitor. Use the zoom buttons to adjust the size of the framed subject. The zoom buttons Press v to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press t to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. 5 L p 9 Taking Pictures Step 4 Focus and Shoot 4.1 Press the shutter-release button half- way, stopping when you feel resistance. The camera focuses on the subject at the center of the frame. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash: Focus indicator On (green) p L p 5 Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus. Change composition and try again. Blinks red Flash lamp On (red) Blinks red Off Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging. Flash off or not required. 4.2 Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. 10 Taking Pictures Step 5 View Pictures Press i to display a picture in the monitor. 5 i Use the multi selector to view other pictures. Press the multi selector right or down to view pictures in the order recorded, left or up to view pictures in reverse order. View previous picture View next picture The following operations can be performed in playback mode: To Zoom picture in View thumbnails Enhance brightness and contrast Use v (k) t (j) u (d) Press i or the shutter-release button to switch to shooting mode. Page 22 of the User's Manual Deleting Unwanted Pictures To delete the picture currently displayed in the monitor, press T. A confirmation dialog will be displayed; highlight one of the following options and press d: · [No]: Exit without deleting the picture. · [Yes]: Delete the picture. Erase 1 image? No Yes 11 Taking Pictures Step 6 Turn the camera off Press the power switch to turn the camera off. Using Camera Menus A variety of shooting and playback settings can be adjusted from the camera menus. Press m to display the menu for the current mode and use the multi selector to select an option as described on page 6. If a "?" icon is displayed in the monitor, help for the current menu item can be viewed by pressing v (l). Page 73 of the User's Manual Shooting menu Set up Image mode White balance Continuous BSS MENU Exit H ? 12 Other Functions Flash, Self-Timer, Macro Close-up Mode, and Exposure Compensation Pressing the multi selector up, down, left, or right during shooting displays the flash, self-timer, macro closeup mode, and exposure compensation menus. Flash The following flash modes are available: Mode z Auto Flash z Description Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor. A Auto with red- Reduces "red eye" in portraits. eye reduction B Off C Fill flash Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor. Flash fires whenever picture is taken. Use to "fillin" (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects. Flash illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background at night or under dim light. Exposure Compensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "-" side. Page 28 of the User's Manual Macro Close-up Mode Use for close-ups. When the F icon glows green, the camera can focus at distances as close as 15 cm (5.9 in.) from the lens. Page 27 of the User's Manual Self-Timer The camera is equipped with ten-second timers for self-portraits. When using the self-timer, mount the camera on a tripod (recommended) or rest it on a flat, level surface. For parties and other indoor scenes. For brightly-lit expanses of water, sand, or snow. For sunsets and sunrises. For low-light landscape shots. For night landscapes. For close-ups. For indoor shots where flash photograph is prohibited. For fireworks. For drawings, handwriting, or printed text. For back-lit subjects. For panoramas. Page 52 of the User's Manual 15 Installing PictureProject PictureProject Install the supplied PictureProject software to transfer pictures to a computer for easy viewing and storage. The main PictureProject controls are shown below. See the PictureProject Reference Manual on the silver CD for details. Organize: View and organize pictures. Edit: Crop pictures, adjust brightness and hue, and use other editing tools. Collection list: Group pictures into collections. Picture list: View pictures in the current collection. Design: Arrange pictures for printing. PictureProject can also be used for a variety of other tasks, including printing pictures, sending pictures by e-mail, viewing slide shows, and copying pictures to CD or DVD. Viewing the PictureProject Reference Manual The PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD) can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. To view the Reference Manual, start the computer, insert the silver reference CD. Double-click the CD icon, and the [INDEX.pdf] icon. Click a language and follow the links to view the PictureProject Reference Manual. NOTE: Depending on your operating system, the dialogs displayed during installation may differ from those shown here. The illustrations in this guide are from Windows XP. 16 Installing PictureProject Before You Begin: System Requirements Confirm that your system meets the following requirements: Windows Macintosh 300 MHz Pentium or better recommended (550 MHz Pen- Power PC G4, G5, tium III or better recomIntel (under Rosetta) mended for Pictmotion) Preinstall version of Windows Vista (32-bit Home Basic/ Home Premium/Business/ Mac OS X version 10.3.9, Enterprise/Ultimate editions), 10.4.x Windows XP (Home Edition/ Professional), Windows 2000 Professional 60 MB required for installation Minimum 64 MB (128 MB for Pictmotion) 800 × 600 or more with 16-bit color (High Color/thousands of colors) or better; 24-bit color or better recommended Only computers with built-in USB ports supported CPU OS* Hard disk space RAM Video resolution Miscellaneous * Refer to the Nikon website for the latest information on operating system compatibility. When Installing, Using, or Uninstalling PictureProject Log on to an account with administrator privileges. Installing PictureProject 1 Turn the computer on and insert the PictureProject installer CD into the CD-ROM drive. Exit all other applications and turn off any virus-checking software before beginning PictureProject installation. Double-click the CD icon on the desktop and then doubleclick the [Welcome] icon. Enter the administrator name and password, and then click [OK] (Macintosh only). 17 2 Installing PictureProject 3 If the Install Center program does not start automatically, open "Computer" by selecting [Computer] from the [Start] menu (Windows Vista), open "My Computer" by selecting [My Computer] from the [Start] menu (Windows XP) or by double-clicking the [My Computer] icon on the desktop (Windows 2000 Professional), then double-click the CD (PictureProject) icon. If you are using Windows Vista, follow the on-screen instructions. Windows: The Install Center program will start and a [Select Region] dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click [Next]. (The [Select Region] dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to step 4.) Macintosh: The Install Center program will start and a [Select Region] dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click [Next]. (The [Select Region] dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to step 4.) 4 5 Choose a language and click [Next]. Click [Easy Install]. Easy Install: Install the minimum software needed to run PictureProject. Custom Install: Install selected software. Try other Nikon Software: Download the current versions of other Nikon software (Internet connection required). Customer Support: View the ReadMe file or visit Nikon technical support websites (Internet connection required). Drivers (Windows XP) If prompted to install the PTP drivers, click [OK] and follow the onscreen instructions to complete installation. 18 Installing PictureProject 6 7 Follow the on-screen instructions to install Panorama Maker. Click [Yes] to Install QuickTime* (some time may be required to complete installation on some systems). * Use of the latest version of QuickTime supported by Windows Vista is recommended. See the Apple Computer, Inc. website for the latest information on QuickTime and Windows Vista compatibility. Macintosh If an earlier version of QuickTime is installed, Macintosh users will be prompted to install QuickTime following installation of PictureProject. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete installation. 8 Follow the on-screen instructions to install Fotoshare (Europe only). Macintosh Macintosh users must install Nikon Fotoshare manually when installation of PictureProject is complete. To install Nikon Fotoshare, open the [Fotoshare] folder on the PictureProject installer CD and drag the [Nikon Fotoshare] icon to the [Applications] folder on the computer's hard disk. 9 10 After reading the license agreement, click [Yes] (Windows) or [Accept] (Macintosh) to proceed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install PictureProject. 19 Installing PictureProject 11 Click [Finish] (Windows) or [Quit] (Macintosh) to exit the PictureProject installer. DirectX 9 (Windows XP/2000 only) If DirectX 9 is not already installed, a DirectX 9 installer dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9. 12 13 Click [Yes] (Windows) or [OK] (Macintosh) to close the Install Center window. If prompted to restart the computer, follow the on-screen instructions. The PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. To proceed without cataloging images, click [Close]. Images can be cataloged at any time; see the PictureProject Reference Manual on the silver CD for details. Remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. Software Updates If the computer is connected to the Internet, PictureProject will periodically check for updates. If an update is detected when PictureProject starts, an update dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to update to the latest version of PictureProject. 14 20 Viewing Pictures on a Computer Before You Begin Before copying pictures to a computer, confirm that: PictureProject is installed: If PictureProject is not installed before the camera is connected, a hardware wizard may be displayed. Click [Cancel] to exit and then disconnect the camera. The appropriate option is selected in the camera USB menu: If you are using Windows 2000, you will need to change the [Interface] > [USB] option in the camera setup menu from [PTP] (the default setting) to [Mass storage]. Press m to display the menu and follow the steps below. 1 3 Highlight [Set up] and press d. Interface USB Video mode Auto transfer 4 USB PTP Mass storage Exit Exit Use a Reliable Power Source Nikon recommends using a fully charged battery or the AC Adapter EH65A (available separately from Nikon) to power the camera for extended periods. Do not use another make or model of AC adapter. 21 Viewing Pictures on a Computer 1 2 Turn off the camera. Connect the camera to the computer using the supplied USB cable. 3 Turn on the camera. PictureProject will automatically detect the camera and the PictureProject Transfer window will be displayed in the computer monitor. Click [Transfer] to copy all pictures in the camera to the computer. Windows Vista/XP If the dialog shown at right is displayed, select [Import] or [Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using PictureProject] and click [OK]. To bypass this dialog in the future, check [Always use this program for this action]. 22 Viewing Pictures on a Computer 4 5 The pictures are displayed in PictureProject when transfer is complete. Disconnect the camera. · Windows Vista/XP/Mac OS X: Turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable. · Windows 2000: Click the [Unplug or Eject Hardware] icon in the taskbar and select [Stop USB Mass Storage Device]. Turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable. 23 Other Features of the COOLPIX L11/COOLPIX L10 A Advanced Red-Eye Reduction: Reduce "red-eye" when using the flash.
