See page 95 of the User's Manual for a list of approved memory cards. Supplied batteries are for trial use only. Viewing the Camera User's Manual on CD The User's Manual can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. 1 Start the computer and insert the User's Manual CD. 2 Double-click the CD [COOLPIX L15] icon in Computer (Windows Vista) or My Computer (Windows XP/2000), or on the desktop (Macintosh). 3 Double-click the [INDEX.pdf ] icon to display a language selection screen. Click a language and follow the links to view the User's Manual. 2 Introduction First Steps Step 1 Attach the Camera Strap Attach the camera strap as shown. Step 2 Insert the Batteries 2.1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 1 3 2 2.2 Insert the batteries. · Insert the batteries correctly as shown at right. 2.3 Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 2 1 First Steps 3 Step 3 Turn On and Off the Camera To turn on the camera, press the power switch. The power-on lamp (green) will light for a moment and the monitor will turn on. To turn off the camera, press the power switch again. When the camera turns off, both the power-on lamp and monitor will turn off. Opening the Battery-chamber/Memory Card Slot Cover Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp and the monitor have gone out before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Hold the camera upside down to prevent the batteries from falling out. Power Saving Function in Shooting Mode If no operations are performed for about five seconds, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. The monitor turns off and the power-on lamp blinks if no operations are performed for thirty seconds (default setting). The camera enters standby mode. After a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Supported Batteries To use batteries other than the supplied alkaline batteries see page 12 of the User's Manual. 4 First Steps Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory (approximately 23 MB). If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording, deletion, and transfer only if no memory card is inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 Turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp and the monitor are off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.1 (A 3) and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.3 (A 3). 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed in the monitor, the memory card must be formatted before it Card is not formatted. can be used in the camera. Use the multi selector (A 6) to Format card? choose [Yes] and press k. A confirmation dialog is displayed. To No start formatting, choose [Format] and press k. Yes Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. Do not turn the camera off or open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover until formatting is complete. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp and the monitor are off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand. First Steps 5 Step 4 Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Multi Selector Use the multi selector to choose and apply settings. Operate the multi selector by pressing it up, down, right, left, or by pressing k. Move the highlight up. Return to the previous screen (move the highlight to the left). Advance to the next screen (move the highlight to the right). Apply selection. Move the highlight down. In the descriptions that follow, how to use the multi selector to perform a task are shown in gray. 4.1 4.2 Date Set time and date? No Yes Choose the desired language and press k. Choose [Yes] and press k. The time zone menu is displayed. If daylight saving time is in effect, press the multi selector down to highlight [Daylight saving] and press k to select. Press the multi selector up to return to Step 4.3. 4.3 Time zone London,Casablanca Daylight saving Press k. The home time zone menu is displayed. 6 First Steps 4.4 Home time zone 4.5 Date D M Y 01 London,Casablanca Back 09 00 00 2007 Select your home time zone and press k. The date menu is displayed. Edit the day and press right. · Edit the month, year and time in the same manner. Press left to move the cursor forward. 4.6 Date D M Y 4.7 11 2007 10 Press this button in shooting mode for shooting-mode selection menu. 15 15 Choose the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed and press k. The settings are applied. Press k to exit the screen. The camera enters shooting mode. When daylight saving time ends, turn [Daylight saving] off from the date menu in the setup menu. The camera's clock is automatically set back one hour. Page 81 of the User's Manual. First Steps 7 Taking Pictures Step 1 Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. Shooting mode U is displayed in easy auto mode. To select other shooting modes, press shooting mode button (A 14). Internal memory indicator Pictures will be recorded to internal memory (approximately 23 MB). When a memory card is inserted, C is not displayed and pictures will be recorded to memory card. Vibration reduction (VR) icon Reduce the effects of camera shake. Page 86 of the User's Manual 10 Number of exposures remaining Battery level indicator NO INDICATOR B N Warning! Battery exhausted. Cannot take pictures. Replace batteries. Batteries fully charged. Batteries low; prepare to replace batteries. Image mode Display image size and quality set in the image mode menu. The default setting is y Normal (3,264×2,448). Page 67 of the User's Manual 8 Taking Pictures Step 2 Ready the Camera Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, and AF-assist illuminator. When taking pictures in "tall" orientation, turn the camera so that the built-in flash is above the lens. Step 3 Frame a Picture Frame the subject near the center of the monitor. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background. The zoom buttons Press g to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press f to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. 10 Taking Pictures 9 Step 4 Focus and Shoot 4.1 Press the shutter-release button halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. Camera focuses on the subject overlapping the focus area in the center of the monitor. Focus remains locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash. Focus indicator On (green) Blinks red Subject in focus. 10 Camera unable to focus. Change composition and try again. See page 23 of the User's Manual for "Autofocus". Flash lamp On Blinks Off Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging.* Flash off or not required. * If the battery level is low, monitor turns off after the picture is taken with flash and the flash lamp blinks until the flash is completely charged. 4.2 Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. The picture will be recorded to the memory card or internal memory. Do not use force when pressing the shutter-release button, as this may cause camera shake, resulting in blurred pictures. 10 Taking Pictures Step 5 View Pictures Press c. The picture is displayed in the monitor in full-frame playback mode. 15/11/2007 15:30 0001.JPG 4 4 Use the multi selector to view other pictures. Press the multi selector right or down to view pictures in the order recorded, left or up to view pictures in reverse order. View previous picture View next picture The following operations can be performed in full-frame playback mode. To Zoom in on displayed picture Display groups of 4, 9, or 16 thumbnail images in the monitor (thumbnail playback) Use g (i) f (h) Press the shooting mode button to switch to shooting mode. Taking Pictures 11 Deleting Selected Pictures To delete the picture currently displayed in the monitor, press l. When a confirmation dialog is displayed, use the multi selector to highlight [Yes]. Press k to delete the picture. Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. To exit without deleting the picture, choose [No] and press k. Erase 1 image? No Yes 12 Taking Pictures Other Functions Flash Mode, Self-timer, Macro Mode and Exposure Compensation Use the multi selector in shooting mode to apply the following settings. Flash Mode The flash modes available are U (auto), V (auto with red-eye reduction), W (off), X (fill flash), and Y (slow sync) modes. Page 26 of the User's Manual Flash mode Exposure Compensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. When the picture is too dark: adjust the Exposure compensation exposure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "-" side. Page 30 of the User's Manual Macro Mode Use for close-ups. When the F icon glows green, the camera can focus at distances as close as 15 cm (5.9 in.) from the lens. Page 29 of the User's Manual Macro mode Self-timer The camera is equipped with a ten-second timer for self-portraits. Page 28 of the User's Manual Self-timer Other Functions 13 Selecting the shooting mode Press the shooting mode button in shooting mode to display the shooting-mode selection menu and use the multi selector to select the shooting mode. The Shooting-mode Selection Menu G Easy auto mode A simple and easy shooting mode in which the majority of camera settings are controlled by the camera. D Movie Record movies. Page 48 of the User's Manual C Scene Camera settings are automatically optimized for the selected subject type. (A 15) Easy auto mode H One-touch portrait The camera automatically detects faces and reduces redeye for easy, eye-catching portraits. Page 40 of the User's Manual A Auto mode White balance, continuous shooting and color options in the shooting menu can be set for shooting. Page 31 of the User's Manual Using Camera Menus A variety of shooting and playback settings can be adjusted from the camera menus. Press d to display the menu for the current mode and use the multi selector (A 6) to select an option. Press d again to exit the menu. If M is displayed at the lower right in the monitor, help for the current menu item can be viewed by pressing g (j). Press g (j) again to display the menu. Press d in the scene mode to display the scene menu and select a mode optimized for the selected subject type. The default setting is [Portrait].
