Viewing the Camera User's Manual on CD The User's Manual can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. 1 Start the computer and insert the User's Manual CD. 2 Double-click the CD COOLPIX L18L16 icon in Computer (Windows Vista) or My Computer (Windows XP/2000), or on the desktop (Macintosh). 3 Double-click the INDEX.pdf icon to display a language selection screen. Click a language and follow the links to view the User's Manual. 2 Introduction First Steps Step 1 Attach the Camera Strap Attach the camera strap as shown. Step 2 Insert the Batteries 2.1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 1 3 2 2.2 Insert the batteries. · Insert the batteries correctly as shown at right. 2.3 Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 2 1 First Steps 3 Step 3 Turn On the Camera To turn on the camera, press the power switch. The power-on lamp (green) will light for a moment and the monitor will turn on. To turn off the camera, press the power switch again. When the camera turns off, both the power-on lamp and monitor will turn off. Opening the Battery-chamber/Memory Card Slot Cover Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp and the monitor have gone out before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Hold the camera upside down to prevent the batteries from falling out. Power Saving Function in Shooting Mode If no operations are performed for about five seconds, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. The monitor turns off and the power-on lamp blinks if no operations are performed for thirty seconds (default setting). The camera enters standby mode. After a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Supported Batteries To use batteries other than the supplied alkaline batteries see page 12 of the User's Manual. 4 First Steps Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory (approx. 21 MB). If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording, deletion, and transfer only if no memory card is inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 Turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp and the monitor are off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.1 (A 3) and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.3 (A 3). Hold the camera upside down to prevent the batteries from falling out. 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed in the monitor, the memory card must be formatted before it Card is not formatted. can be used in the camera. Use the multi selector (A 6) to Format card? choose Yes and press k. A confirmation dialog is displayed. To No start formatting, choose Format and press k. Yes Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. Do not turn the camera off or open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover until formatting is complete. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp and the monitor are off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand. First Steps 5 Step 4 Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Multi Selector Use the multi selector to choose and apply settings. Operate the multi selector by pressing it up, down, right, left, or by pressing k. Move the highlight up. Return to the previous screen (move the highlight to the left). Advance to the next screen (move the highlight to the right). Apply selection. Move the highlight down. In the descriptions that follow, how to use the multi selector to perform a task are shown in gray. 4.1 4.2 Date Set time and date? No Yes Choose the desired language and press k. Choose Yes and press k. The time zone menu is displayed. If daylight saving time is in effect, press the multi selector down to highlight Daylight saving and press k to select. The settings are applied. Press shooting mode button to exit the screen. · The camera enters shooting-mode selection menu. · The lens will open. 4.8 Easy auto mode When Easy auto mode is displayed, press k. · The camera enters the shooting mode and you can take pictures in Easy auto mode. The next step explains how to take pictures using easy auto mode. · To change the date and time, select Date from Date in the setup menu. · To change the time zone and the daylight saving settings, select Time zone from Date in the setup menu. Pages 74 and 77 of the User's Manual. First Steps 7 Taking Pictures Step 1 Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. The information on indicators in the monitor during shooting and playback will display only for a few seconds. Shooting mode U is displayed in easy auto mode. To select other shooting modes, press shooting mode button (A 14). In the easy auto mode, you can shoot in Face Priority. Anti-shake AE icon Reduce the blurring caused by camera or subject shake. When a memory card is inserted, C is not displayed and pictures will be recorded to memory card. Battery level indicator NO INDICATOR B N Battery exhausted. Batteries fully charged. Batteries low; prepare to replace batteries. Cannot take pictures. Replace batteries. 8 Taking Pictures Step 2 Ready the Camera Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, and AF-assist illuminator. When taking pictures in "tall" orientation, turn the camera so that the built-in flash is above the lens. Step 3 Frame a Picture When the camera recognizes a face (front view), that face will be framed by a yellow double border (by default). If more than one face is recognized, the face nearest to the camera will be framed by a double border and the rest by a single border. Focus area, focusing on the center of the monitor will appear when shooting nonhuman subjects or when no faces are recognized. Position the main subject near the center of the monitor. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background. Page 20 of the User's Manual The zoom buttons Press g to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press f to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. 7 Taking Pictures 9 Step 4 Focus and Shoot 4.1 Press the shutter-release button halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. When people's faces (front view) are recognized: Camera will focus on the face surrounded by a double border. Once focus has been locked the double border will glow green. When shooting non-human subjects or when no faces are recognized: The camera focuses on the subject overlapping the focus area in the center of the monitor. When the subject is in focus, the focus area glows green. The shutter speed and aperture are displayed by pressing the shutter-release button halfway. Focus remains locked while the shutterrelease button is pressed halfway. Flash lamp 1/60 F2.8 1/60 F2.8 When the shutter-release button is Focus area pressed halfway, and then the double border blinks in Face Priority, or the focus area or the focus indicator blinks red, the camera is unable to focus. Change the composition and press the shutter-release button halfway down again. Refer to "Autofocus" on page 23 in the User's Manual for details. 10 Taking Pictures With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check flash. Flash lamp On Blinks Off Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging.* Flash off or not required. * If the battery level is low, monitor turns off and the flash lamp blinks until the flash is completely charged. 4.2 Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. The picture will be recorded to the memory card or internal memory. Do not use force when pressing the shutter-release button, as this may cause camera shake, resulting in blurred pictures. Taking Pictures 11 Step 5 View Pictures Press c. The picture is displayed in the monitor in full-frame playback mode. 15/05/2008 15:30 0001.JPG 4 4 Use the multi selector to view other pictures. Press the multi selector right or down to view pictures in the order recorded, left or up to view pictures in reverse order. View previous picture View next picture Press the shooting mode button to switch to shooting mode. The following operations can be performed in full-frame playback mode. To Zoom in on displayed picture Display groups of 4, 9, or 16 thumbnail images in the monitor (thumbnail playback) Page 24 of the User's Manual Use g (i) f (h) Deleting Selected Pictures To delete the picture currently displayed in the monitor, press l. When a confirmation dialog is displayed, use the multi selector to highlight Yes. Press k to delete the picture. Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. To exit without deleting the picture, choose No and press k. Erase 1 image? No Yes 12 Taking Pictures Other Functions Flash Mode, Self-timer, Macro Mode and Exposure Compensation Use the multi selector in shooting mode to apply the following settings. Flash Mode The flash modes available are U (auto), V (auto with red-eye reduction), W (off), X (fill flash), and Y (slow sync) modes. Page 26 of the User's Manual Flash mode Exposure Compensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. When the picture is too dark: adjust the Exposure compensation exposure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "-" side. Page 30 of the User's Manual Macro Mode Use for close-ups. The camera can focus at distances as close as 15 cm (5.9 in.) from the lens when the F and the zoom indicator glow green (zoom indicator is over the G).
