Viewing the Camera User's Manual on CD The User's Manual can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. 1 Start the computer and insert the User's Manual CD. 2 Double-click the CD [COOLPIX P5100] icon in Computer (Windows Vista) or My Computer (Windows XP/2000), or on the desktop (Macintosh). 3 Double-click the [INDEX.pdf ] icon to display a language selection screen. Click a language and follow the links to view the User's Manual. A: This icon indicates that more information is available elsewhere in this guide. 2 Introduction First Steps Step 1 Attach the Camera Strap Attach both ends of the camera strap to the eyelet as shown below. Step 2 Charge the Battery Charge the Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL5 with the supplied Battery Charger MH-61. 2.1 Connect the power cable to the charger 1 and then plug it into an electrical outlet 2. The CHARGE lamp will light 3. 2.2 Remove the battery terminal cover and insert the battery as shown, matching the projections on the battery to the indentations in the charger. 2.3 The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. A fully-exhausted battery charges in about two hours. First Steps 3 Step 3 Insert the Battery Insert the charged battery as described below. 3.1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 3.2 Insert the battery. The orange battery latch is pushed up 1 as the battery is inserted 2. The latch drops back into place when the battery is fully inserted. Inserting the Battery Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation. 3.3 Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Removing the Battery Turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is off before removing or inserting batteries. To eject the battery, open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and slide the battery latch in the direction shown 1. The battery can then be removed by hand 2. Note that the battery may become hot during use; observe due caution when removing the battery. 4 First Steps Step 4 Turn On the Camera 4.1 Rotate the mode dial to A (auto). This guide describes how to shoot in A (auto) mode, a simple "point-and-shoot" mode, suited to first-time users of digital cameras, in which the camera automatically adjusts settings. 4.2 Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will be lit and the monitor will turn on. When the power-on lamp (green) is lit, press the power switch to turn off the camera. Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory (approximately 52 MB). If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording, deletion, and transfer only if no memory card is inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3.1 on the previous page and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3.3 on the previous page. 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed P in the monitor, the memory card must be formatted before it Card is not formatted. can be used in the camera. Press the multi selector (A 6) Format card? down to highlight [Yes] and press k. A confirmation dialog will be displayed. To start formatting, choose [Format] and No Yes press k. Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. Do not turn the camera off or open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover until formatting is complete. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand. First Steps 5 Step 5 Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Multi Selector Use the multi selector to choose and apply settings. Operate the multi selector by pressing it up, down, right, left, or by pressing k. Move the highlight up. Apply selection Return to the previous screen (move the highlight to the left). Advance to the next screen (move the highlight to the right). Move the highlight down. In the descriptions that follow, buttons to be pressed are shown in white. 5.1 5.2 d Date Set time and date? No Yes Choose the desired language and press k. Choose [Yes] and press k. The time zone menu is displayed. If daylight saving time is in effect, press the multi selector down to highlight [Daylight saving] and press k to select. Press the multi selector up or down to edit the highlighted item. Press the multi selector right to move the highlight to edit the day, month, year, time, and the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed. Press the multi selector left to return to the previous item. Choose the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed and press k. The settings are applied and monitor display exits to shooting mode. 5.6 Date D M Y 15 15 11 10 2007 When daylight saving time ends, turn [Daylight saving] off from the date menu in the setup menu. The camera's clock is automatically set back one hour. Page 123 of the User's Manual Power Saving Function If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute in all modes, the monitor will turn off; after another three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. First Steps 7 Shooting Step 1 Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. Shooting mode A is displayed in A (auto) mode. Page 12 of the User's Manual 8 Shooting Step 2 Ready the Camera Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, built-in flash, AF-assist illuminator, and microphone. Frame a Picture Step 3 Frame the subject near the center of the monitor or viewfinder. Modify composition by using the zoom control to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background. A F 1/125 F4.3 17 A The Zoom Control Rotate the zoom control to g to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Rotate the zoom control to f to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. Zoom out Zoom in Shooting 9 Step 4 Focus and Shoot 4.1 Press the shutter-release button halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. In A (auto) mode, the camera automatically focuses on the subject in the center focus area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Flash off or not required. * When pictures are shot using the flash and a low battery, the monitor display will turn off and the flash lamp will blink until the flash is fully charged. 4.2 Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to shoot. Do not use force when pressing the shutter-release button, as this may cause camera shake, resulting in blurred pictures. 10 Shooting Step 5 View Pictures c F Press c. The camera enters playback mode, and the picture is displayed in the monitor in full-frame playback mode. 1/125 F4 Use the multi selector to view other pictures. Press the multi selector right or down to view pictures in the order recorded, left or up to view pictures in reverse order. View previous picture View next picture The following operations can be performed in full-frame playback mode. When a confirmation dialog is displayed, use the multi selector to highlight [Yes]. F No Yes Shooting 11 Other Functions Flash Mode, Self-timer, Focus Mode, and Exposure Compensation Use the multi selector in shooting mode to apply the following settings. Flash Mode The flash modes available are U (auto), V (auto with red-eye reduction), W (off), X (fill flash), Y (slow sync), and Z (Rear-curtain sync) modes. When the picture is too dark: adjust the exposure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "-" side. Page 34 of the User's Manual o +0.3 Focus Mode Choose from A (Autofocus), B (Infinity) with which camera focuses on landscape at ranges of 5 m (16 ft. 5 in.) or more, and D (Macro close-up) with which camera can focus as close as 4 cm (1.6 in.) to lens.
