Turn On the Camera
3.1
Rotate the mode dial to A (auto).
This guide describes how to take a picture in A (auto) mode, a simple "point-and-shoot" mode, suited to first-time users of digital cameras, in which the camera automatically adjusts settings.

Press the power switch to turn on the camera.
The power-on lamp (green) will light for a moment and the monitor, or electronic viewfinder, will turn on. · Pressing the power switch again turns off the camera. · When the camera is turned off, the power-on lamp, monitor, and electronic viewfinder will turn off.
Opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover Turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp, monitor, and electronic viewfinder are off before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Hold the camera upside down to prevent the batteries from falling out. Power Saving Function If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor, or electronic viewfinder, will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about 30 seconds (default setting), the monitor, or electronic viewfinder, will turn off and the camera will enter standby mode. In standby mode, the power lamp will blink, and if no operations are performed for another three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Supported batteries To use batteries other than the supplied alkaline batteries, see page 111 of the User's Manual.

First Steps
Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory (approximately 12 MB). If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording, deletion, and transfer only if no memory card is inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 Turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp, monitor, and electronic viewfinder are off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.1 (A 3) and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.3 (A 3). Hold the camera upside down to prevent the batteries from falling out. 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed, the memory card must be formatted before it can be used in Card is not formatted. the camera. Press the multi selector (A 6) down to highlight Format card? Yes and press k. A confirmation dialog is displayed. To start No formatting, choose Format and press k. Yes Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. Do not turn the camera off or open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover until formatting is complete. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp, monitor, and electronic viewfinder are off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand.

Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock
A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Multi Selector Use the multi selector to choose and apply settings. Operate the multi selector by pressing it up, down, right, left, or by pressing k.
Move the highlight up. Apply selection
Return to the previous screen (move the highlight to the left).
Advance to the next screen (move the highlight to the right).
Move the highlight down.

Ready the Camera
Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, AF-assist illuminator, and microphone.
Frame a Picture Step 3 Frame the subject near the center of the monitor or electronic viewfinder. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background.
The Zoom Buttons Press g to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press f to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. Page 22 of the User's Manual

Focus and Shoot
4.1
Press the shutter-release button halfway, stopping when you feel resistance.
The camera automatically focuses on the subject in the center focus area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check the focus area and flash indicator. Focus area

On Blinks Off Flash will fire when picture is shot. Flash charging*. Flash off or not required.

Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take a picture.
Do not use force when pressing the shutter-release button, as this may cause camera shake, resulting in blurred pictures.

Use the multi selector to view other pictures. Press the multi selector right or down to view pictures in the order recorded, left or up to view pictures in reverse order.

Flash Mode, Self-timer, Focus Mode, and Exposure Compensation
Use the multi selector in shooting mode to apply the following settings.
Flash Mode The flash modes available are U (auto), V (auto with red-eye reduction), W (off), X (fill flash), Y (slow sync), and Z (Rear-curtain sync) modes. Page 28 of the User's Manual
Flash mode
Exposure Compensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. When the picture is too dark, adjust the exposure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright, adjust the exposure compensation to "" side. Page 32 of the User's Manual
Focus Mode Choose from A (Autofocus), B (Infinity) with which camera focuses on landscape at ranges of 5 m (17 ft.) or more, and D (Macro close-up) with which camera can focus as close as 10 cm (4 in.) to lens. Page 31 of the User's Manual

Selecting a Shooting Mode
Rotate the mode dial to align the mode icon with the mark next to the mode dial.
P, M: Adjust shooting menu settings such as white balance and ISO sensitivity, as well as the continuous shooting mode for P (programmed auto) or M (manual) mode. Pages 43 and 44 of the User's Manual A Auto: A simple "point-andshoot" mode recommended for first time users of digital cameras (A 8). B High sensitivity: Choose this mode to reduce blur when the subject is poorly lit. Page 42 of the User's Manual D Movie: Choose this mode to shoot movies. Using Scene Modes
By simply rotating the mode dial to b, c, or e, a shooting mode suited to portraits, landscapes, or night portraits, respectively, is applied.

At the default setting, rotating the mode dial to y enables a scene shooting mode suited to parties and other indoor scenes (Party/indoor scene mode). Press d to display the scene menu and use the multi selector to highlight and select a scene mode. Camera settings will be optimized for the selected type of scene.

Installing Nikon Transfer
Nikon Transfer can be used to copy (transfer) pictures to a computer for storage. Install Nikon Transfer from the supplied Software Suite CD. For further information, refer to the help information contained in the Software Suite CD or in Nikon Transfer.

Installing Nikon Transfer
Before Installing Exit all other applications and turn off any virus-checking software before beginning Nikon Transfer installation. When Installing, Using or Uninstalling Nikon Transfer Log on to an account with administrator privileges.
NOTE: Depending on your operating system, the dialogs displayed during installation may differ from those shown here. The illustrations in this guide are from Windows Vista.

Turn the computer on and insert the Software Suite installer CD into the CDROM drive.
Windows Vista Choose Run Welcome.exe in the AutoPlay dialog to start the install program. Proceed to step 3. Windows XP/2000 The Install Center program will start automatically. Proceed to step 3. If the Install Center Program Does Not Start Automatically (Windows only) Windows Vista/XP Open Computer by selecting Computer from the Start menu (Windows Vista), open My Computer by selecting My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP), and double-click the Software Suite CD icon. Windows 2000 Professional Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop and then double-click the Software Suite CD icon. Mac OS X The Software Suite folder will open automatically. Double-click the Welcome icon. If the folder does not open automatically, double-click on the Software Suite CD icon on the desktop.

Enter the administrator name and password, and then click OK (Macintosh only).

A Software Suite installer dialog will be displayed.
If Nikon Transfer is Already Installed The Language Selection dialog will not be displayed if Nikon Transfer is installed. The Install Center window is displayed in the language selected when Nikon Transfer was first installed.

Windows Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Mac OS X The license agreement will be displayed. After taking the time to read and understand the contents of this agreement, click Accept and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Proceed to step 7.

Click Yes to install QuickTime* (Windows only).
Installation may take several minutes on some systems. * See the Apple Inc. website for Windows Vista support information. Nikon recommends downloading and installing the most up-to-date version of QuickTime for Windows Vista.

Install Nikon Transfer.
Windows Click Next. The license agreement will be displayed. After taking the time to read and understand the contents of this agreement, click Yes to accept its terms and display the ReadMe file. After reviewing the contents of this file, which may contain important information that could not be included here, click Continue and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Proceed to step 9. Mac OS X The license agreement will be displayed. After taking the time to read and understand the contents of this agreement, click Accept and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Activate the Auto-Launch setting (Macintosh only).
When the Auto-Launch setting dialog is displayed, click Yes to have Nikon Transfer start automatically whenever the camera is connected. The Auto-Launch Setting The Auto-Launch option can also be enabled after installation of Nikon Transfer by checking the Launch automatically when device is attached option in the transfer options Preferences panel.

Click Finish (Windows) or Quit (Macintosh) and follow the on-screen instructions to close the Install Center Window.
If prompted to restart the computer, follow the onscreen instructions.
Microsoft DirectX 9 (Windows XP/2000 only) If DirectX 9 is not already installed, a DirectX 9 installer dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9.

Remove the Software Suite installer CD from the CD-ROM drive.
This completes installation. Proceed to "Transferring Pictures to a Computer" (A 21).

Transferring Pictures to a Computer
Use a Reliable Power Source Nikon recommends using batteries with adequate charge remaining or the AC Adapter EH-65A (available separately from Nikon) to power the camera for extended periods. Do not use any other AC adapters as it will cause the camera to heat up or malfunction. If You Are Using Windows 2000 Professional Use a card reader or similar device to transfer pictures stored on the memory card to the computer (A 23).

Turn off the camera. Connect the camera to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
Check to be sure that the connector is in the correct orientation and insert the plug straight. Do not insert or disconnect it forcibly.

Turn on the camera.
The power-on lamp will light up. Windows Vista When the AutoPlay dialog is displayed, select Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Nikon Transfer. Nikon Transfer will start. To bypass this dialog in the future, check Always do this for this device:. Windows XP When the AutoPlay dialog is displayed, select Nikon Transfer Copy pictures to a folder on my computer, and click OK. Nikon Transfer will start. To bypass this dialog in the future, check Always use this program for this action.. Mac OS X Nikon Transfer will start automatically if Yes was selected in the Auto-Launch setting dialog when Nikon Transfer was first installed.

Confirm that the source device is displayed in the transfer options Source panel and click Start Transfer.

Transferring Pictures to a Computer
At the Nikon Transfer default setting, the folder to which pictures are transferred is automatically opened.

Disconnect the camera.
Turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable. Pictures can be displayed in the viewer supplied with your operating system.
For Users of Windows 2000 Professional Use a card reader or similar device to transfer the pictures stored on the memory card to the computer. If the memory card has a capacity greater than 2 GB, or is SDHC-compliant, the intended device must support these features of the memory card. · At the Nikon Transfer default settings, Nikon Transfer will start automatically when a memory card is inserted into the card reader or similar device. See step 4 of "Transferring Pictures to a Computer" (A 22). · Do not connect the camera to the computer. If the camera is connected to the computer, the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog will be displayed. Select Cancel, close the dialog, and disconnect the camera from the computer. · To transfer pictures stored in the camera's internal memory to the computer, the pictures must first be copied to a memory card using the camera.
