Remove the camera and accessories from the box and confirm that you have all the items listed below.

First Steps

Attach the Camera Strap
Attach the camera strap as shown.

Charge the Battery
The camera uses a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL10 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Charger MH-63 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. Connect the power cable to the charger (q) and then plug it into a power outlet (w). The CHARGE lamp will light (e).
Insert the battery as shown.
The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. An exhausted battery charges in about 100 minutes.

3 Insert the Battery
After charging the battery, insert it as described below. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
Insert the battery. The orange battery latch is pushed aside as the battery is inserted. The battery is fully inserted when the latch battery clicks back into place.
Inserting the Battery Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation.
Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
Removing the Battery Turn the camera off before removing or inserting batteries. To eject the battery, open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and slide the orange battery latch in the direction shown (q). The battery can then be removed by hand (w). Note that the battery may become hot during use; observe due caution when removing the battery.

Turn On the Camera
Press the power switch to turn on the camera.
Auto off (Stand-by Mode) If no operations are performed for about five seconds, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute, the monitor will turn off; after a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory. If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording and deletion only if no memory card inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3Â and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3Â . 3 Turn the camera on. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand.

Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock
A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date.

Choose the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed and press B.
The settings are applied and monitor display returns to the A (auto) mode.
When daylight saving time ends, turn Daylight saving off from the Date menu in the setup menu. The camera's clock is automatically set back one hour. For more information on setting date and time, see page 103 of the User's Manual (on CD).

Taking Pictures

Check Indicators in the Monitor
Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining.
A (auto) mode 0 is displayed in A (auto) mode. To select other shooting modes, press A (B 14). Page 20 of the User's Manual Internal memory indicator Pictures will be recorded to internal memory (approximately 20 MB). When memory card is inserted, q is not displayed, and pictures will be recorded to memory card.

Ready the Camera
Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash.

Frame a Picture
Frame the subject near the center of the monitor. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background.

The zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame.

Focus and Shoot
Lightly press the shutter-release button about halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. The camera will set focus and exposure for the subject in the center AF area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash:

Turn the camera off
Press the power switch to turn the camera off. The power-on lamp will go out.
Using Camera Menus A variety of shooting and playback settings can be adjusted from the camera menus. Press F to display the menu for the current mode and use the multi selector to select an option as described on page 6. If a "?" icon is displayed in the monitor, help for the current menu item can be viewed by pressing T (L). Press the shutter-release button while navigating menus other than that for voice recording to switch to the shooting mode currently selected in the shooting-mode selection menu.

Other Functions
Flash, Self-Timer, Macro Close-up Mode, and Exposure Compensation
Pressing the multi selector up, down, left, or right during shooting displays the flash, macro close-up mode, self-timer, and exposure compensation menus.
Flash The following flash modes are available: Mode Description S Auto (default setting) Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor. V reduction U Off T Fill flash W Slow sync
Auto with red-eye Reduces "red eye" in portraits. Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor. Flash fires when picture is taken. Use to "fill-in" (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects. Flash illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background at night or under dim light.

Page 28 of the User's Manual Exposure Compensation Exp. +/Exposure compensation is used to alter expo+0.3 sure from the value suggested by the camera 0 to make pictures brighter or darker. When Â0.3 the picture is too dark: adjust the exposure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "Â" side. Page 32 of the User's Manual Macro Close-up Mode Use for close-ups. When the E icon glows green, the camera can focus at distances as close as 10 cm (4 in.) from the lens. Page 31 of the User's Manual Self-Timer The camera is equipped with ten- and three-second timers for selfportraits. When using the self-timer, mount the camera on a tripod (recommended) or rest it on a flat, level surface. Page 30 of the User's Manual

Scene Modes
The camera offers a choice of 15 "scene" options. Camera settings are automatically optimized for the selected subject type. To select scene mode, press A in shooting mode, then select c and press B. To choose a scene mode, press F to display the scene menu, then highlight the scene and press B.
