COOLPIX S200 digital camera Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL10* (with battery case) Battery Charger MH-63 (with power cable) Camera strap USB Cable UC-E6 Audio/Video Cable EG-CP14 · User's Manual CD · Quick Start Guide (this guide) · Warranty * Charge the battery as shown on page 3. Shape of cable depends on country of use. · For your safety · PictureProject installer CD (yellow) · PictureProject Reference Manual CD (silver) NOTE: Memory card not provided. See page 114 of the User's Manual (on CD) for a list of approved memory cards. Viewing the Camera User's Manual on CD The User's Manual (on CD) can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. 1 Start the computer and insert the User's Manual CD. 2 Double-click the CD (COOLPIX S200) icon in My Computer (Windows) or on the desktop (Macintosh). Double-click the INDEX.pdf icon to display a language selection screen. Click a language and follow the links to view the User's Manual. 2 First Steps STEP 1 Attach the Camera Strap Attach the camera strap as shown. STEP 2 Charge the Battery The camera uses a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL10 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Charger MH-63 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. Connect the power cable to the charger (q) and then plug it into a power outlet (w). The CHARGE lamp will light (e). Insert the battery as shown. The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. An exhausted battery charges in about 100 minutes. 3 STEP 3 Insert the Battery After charging the battery, insert it as described below. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Insert the battery. The orange battery latch is pushed aside as the battery is inserted. The battery is fully inserted when the latch battery clicks back into place. Inserting the Battery Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation. Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Removing the Battery Turn the camera off before removing or inserting batteries. To eject the battery, open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and slide the orange battery latch in the direction shown (q). The battery can then be removed by hand (w). Note that the battery may become hot during use; observe due caution when removing the battery. 4 STEP 4 Turn On the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. Auto off (Stand-by Mode) If no operations are performed for about five seconds, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute, the monitor will turn off; after a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory. If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording and deletion only if no memory card inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3­ and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3­ . 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed in the monitor, the memory card must be formatCard is not formatted. ted before it can be used in the camera. Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand. 5 STEP 5 Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Multi Selector Use the multi selector to navigate the menus. Press to move cursor up Press center (B) to make selection Press left to return to previous menu, or move cursor left Press right to display submenu or move cursor right Press to move cursor down Date Set time and date? No Yes Choose the desired language and press B. The date menu is displayed. Time zone Choose Yes and press B. The time zone menu is displayed. Date D M Y Edit the day and press B. Date D M Y 15 00 05 00 2007 15 15 05 10 2007 Edit the month and press B. Edit the year and time in the same manner. Choose the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed and press B. The settings are applied and monitor display returns to the A (auto) mode. When daylight saving time ends, turn Daylight saving off from the Date menu in the setup menu. The camera's clock is automatically set back one hour. For more information on setting date and time, see page 103 of the User's Manual (on CD). 7 Taking Pictures STEP 1 Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. A (auto) mode 0 is displayed in A (auto) mode. To select other shooting modes, press A (B 14). Page 20 of the User's Manual Internal memory indicator Pictures will be recorded to internal memory (approximately 20 MB). Page 84 of the User's Manual B: This icon indicates that more information is available elsewhere in this guide. 8 STEP 2 Ready the Camera Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash. STEP 3 Frame a Picture Frame the subject near the center of the monitor. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background. 12 The zoom buttons Press T to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. 9 STEP 4 Focus and Shoot Lightly press the shutter-release button about halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. The camera will set focus and exposure for the subject in the center AF area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash: Flash lamp Focus indicator Focus area 12 Focus indicator Flash lamp On (green) Blinks red On (red) Blinks red Off Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus. Change composition and try again. Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging. Flash off or not required. Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. 10 STEP 5 View Pictures Press G to display a picture in the monitor (full-frame playback). 05/15/2007 15:30 0001.JPG G button 1/ 1 Use the multi selector to view other pictures. Press the multi selector right or down to view pictures in the order recorded, left or up to view pictures in reverse order. View previous picture View next picture The following operations can be performed in playback mode: To Zoom picture in View thumbnails Electronic VR Press T (O) W (M) B (P) Press G or the shutter-release button to switch to shooting mode. Page 26 of the User's Manual Deleting Unwanted Pictures To delete the picture currently displayed in the monitor, press I. A confirmation dialog will be displayed; highlight one of the following options and press B: · No: Exit without deleting the picture. · Yes: Delete the picture. Erase 1 image? No Yes 11 STEP 6 Turn the camera off Press the power switch to turn the camera off. The power-on lamp will go out. Using Camera Menus A variety of shooting and playback settings can be adjusted from the camera menus. Press F to display the menu for the current mode and use the multi selector to select an option as described on page 6. If a "?" icon is displayed in the monitor, help for the current menu item can be viewed by pressing T (L). Press the shutter-release button while navigating menus other than that for voice recording to switch to the shooting mode currently selected in the shooting-mode selection menu. Page 83, 94 of the User's Manual Shooting menu Image mode White balance Continuous BSS ISO sensitivity Exit 12 Other Functions Flash, Self-Timer, Macro Close-up Mode, and Exposure Compensation Pressing the multi selector up, down, left, or right during shooting displays the flash, macro close-up mode, self-timer, and exposure compensation menus. Flash The following flash modes are available: Mode Description S Auto (default setting) Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor. V reduction U Off T Fill flash W Slow sync Auto with red-eye Reduces "red eye" in portraits. Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor. Flash fires when picture is taken. Use to "fill-in" (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects. Flash illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background at night or under dim light. Flash Page 28 of the User's Manual Exposure Compensation Exp. +/Exposure compensation is used to alter expo+0.3 sure from the value suggested by the camera 0 to make pictures brighter or darker. When ­0.3 the picture is too dark: adjust the exposure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "­" side. Page 32 of the User's Manual Macro Close-up Mode Use for close-ups. When the E icon glows green, the camera can focus at distances as close as 10 cm (4 in.) from the lens. Page 31 of the User's Manual Self-Timer The camera is equipped with ten- and three-second timers for selfportraits. When using the self-timer, mount the camera on a tripod (recommended) or rest it on a flat, level surface. Exit to highlighted mode. 14 Scene Modes The camera offers a choice of 15 "scene" options. Camera settings are automatically optimized for the selected subject type. To select scene mode, press A in shooting mode, then select c and press B. To choose a scene mode, press F to display the scene menu, then highlight the scene and press B. For drawings, handwriting, or printed text. For back-lit subjects. For panoramas. Page 34 of the User's Manual Anti-shake Mode To enter anti-shake mode, press B (P) in shooting mode. This mode reduces effects of camera shake and blurred subjects. Page 42 of the User's Manual 15 Installing PictureProject PictureProject Install the supplied PictureProject software to transfer pictures to a computer for easy viewing and storage. The main PictureProject controls are shown below. See the PictureProject Reference Manual on the silver CD for details. 1 2 3 4 5 Organize: View and organize pictures. Edit: Crop pictures, adjust brightness and hue, and use other retouch tools. Design: Arrange pictures for printing. Collection list: Group pictures into collections. Picture list: View pictures in the current collection. PictureProject can also be used for a variety of other tasks, including printing pictures, sending pictures by e-mail, viewing slide shows, and copying pictures to CD or DVD. NOTE: Depending on your operating system, the dialogs displayed during installation may differ from those shown here. The illustrations in this guide are from Windows XP. 16 Before You Begin System Requirements Windows CPU 300 MHz Pentium or better recommended Macintosh PowerPC G4, G5, Intel (under Rosetta) OS * · Windows Vista (32-bit Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Enterprise/Utlimate editions) Mac OS X · Windows XP (Home Edition/Professional) (version 10.3.9, 10.4.x) · Windows 2000 Professional Preinstalled versions only. 60 MB required for installation Minimum 64 MB 800 × 600 or more with 16-bit color (High Color/thousands of colors) or more; 24-bit color or more recommended Only computers with built-in USB ports supported Hard disk space RAM Video resolution Miscellaneous * Refer to the Nikon website for the latest information on operating system compatibility. CAUTION When Installing, Using, or Uninstalling PictureProject Log on to an account with administrator privileges. Viewing the PictureProject Reference Manual The PictureProject Reference Manual (on CD) can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. To view the Reference Manual, start the computer, insert the silver reference CD, and then display the index as described on page 2 of this guide. 17 Installing PictureProject Turn the computer on and insert the PictureProject installer CD into a CD-ROM drive. Before proceeding, exit all other applications and turn off any viruschecking software. Select a language and click Next. Windows XP/2000: The Install Center program will start and a "Select Language" dialog will be displayed. Windows Vista: Follow the on-screen instructions to display "Select Language" dialog. If the Install Center program does not start automatically, select Computer or My Computer from the Start menu (Windows Vista/Windows XP) or double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop (Windows 2000 Professional) and double-click the CD-ROM (PictureProject) icon. Macintosh: Double-click the PictureProject installer CD icon on the desktop, then double-click the Welcome icon. After entering the administrator name and password and click OK, the Install Center program will start. "Select Language" dialog will be displayed. Click Easy Install. Easy Install: Install the minimum software needed to run PictureProject. Custom Install: Install selected software. Try other Nikon Software: Download trial versions of other Nikon software from a Nikon website (Internet connection required). Customer Support: View the ReadMe file or visit Nikon technical support websites (Internet connection required). 18 Install the PTP driver (Windows XP only). If prompted to install the PTP drivers, click OK and follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation (some versions of Windows XP may display a setup wizard). Follow the on-screen instructions to install Panorama Maker. Click Yes to install QuickTime (some time may be required to complete installation on some systems). Installing QuickTime Under Windows Vista See the Apple website for Windows Vista support information. Nikon recommends downloading and installing the most up-to-date version of QuickTime for Windows Vista. Macintosh If earlier version of QuickTime is installed, Macintosh users will be prompted to install QuickTime following installation of PictureProject. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Fotoshare. Macintosh Macintosh users must install Nikon Fotoshare manually when installation of PictureProject is complete. To install Nikon Fotoshare, open the "Fotoshare" folder on the PictureProject installer CD and drag the Nikon Fotoshare icon to the "Applications" folder on the computer hard disk. After reading the license agreement, click Yes (Windows) or Accept (Macintosh) to proceed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install PictureProject. 19 Click Finish (Windows) or Quit (Macintosh) to exit the PictureProject installer. DirectX (Windows XP/2000) If DirectX 9 is not already installed, a DirectX 9 installer dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9. Click Yes (Windows) or OK (Macintosh) to close the "Install Center" window. If prompted to restart the computer, follow the on-screen instructions. The PictureProject Import Assistant will be displayed. To proceed without cataloging images, click Close. Images can be cataloged at any time; see the PictureProject reference manual on the silver CD for details. Remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive. Software Updates If the computer is connected to the Internet, PictureProject will periodically check for updates. If an update is detected when PictureProject starts, an update dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to update to the latest version of PictureProject. 20 Viewing Pictures on a Computer Before You Begin Before copying pictures to a computer, confirm that: · PictureProject is installed: If PictureProject is not installed before the camera is connected, a hardware wizard may be displayed. Click Cancel to exit and then disconnect the camera. · The appropriate option is selected in the camera USB menu: If you are using Windows 2000, you will need to change the Interface > USB option in the camera setup menu from MTP/PTP (the default setting) to Mass storage. Press A to display the modeselection menu and follow the steps below. 1 Highlight X Set up and press B. Set up 2 Highlight Interface and press B. Set up Interface Reset all Firmware version 3 Highlight USB and press B. Interface USB Video mode Auto transfer 4 Highlight Mass storage and press B. USB MTP/PTP Mass storage Use a Reliable Power Source Nikon recommends using a fully charged battery or the optional EH-62D AC adapter to power the camera for extended periods. Do not use another make or model of AC adapter. 21 Transfer Pictures Turn the camera off. Connect the USB cable as shown below. Connect the camera directly to the computer; do not connect the cable via a USB hub or keyboard. Do not use force. Turn the camera on. PictureProject will automatically detect the camera and the PictureProject Transfer window will be displayed in the computer monitor. Click Transfer to copy all the pictures in the camera to the computer. Windows Vista/XP If the dialog shown at right is displayed, select the PictureProject option and click OK. To bypass this dialog in future, check Always use this program for this action. 22 The pictures are displayed in PictureProject when transfer is complete. Disconnect the camera. Windows Vista/XP/Mac OS X: Turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable. Windows 2000: Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" ( ) icon in the taskbar and select Stop USB Mass Storage Device. Turn the camera off and disconnect the USB cable. Please refer to the User's Manual for more information on using your Nikon digital camera. 23 Other Features of the COOLPIX S200 y High-sensitivity Shooting Mode Camera shake and blurred subject will be avoided when used indoors under low lighting.
