COOLPIX S51 digital camera Camera strap Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL8 (with terminal cover)* Battery Charger MH-62 (with power cable) · User's Manual (CD) · Quick Start Guide (this guide) * Charge the battery (c 3). Shape of cable depends on country of use. NOTE: Memory card not provided. See page 118 of the User's Manual for a list of approved memory cards. Viewing the Camera User's Manual on CD The User's Manual can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. 1 Start the computer and insert the User's Manual CD. 2 Double-click the [COOLPIX S51] CD icon in Computer (Windows Vista) or My Computer (Windows XP/2000), or on the desktop (Macintosh). 3 Double-click the [INDEX.pdf] icon to display a language selection screen. Click a language and follow the links to view the User's Manual. c: This icon indicates that more information is available elsewhere in this guide. 2 LITH IUM ION BAT Y CHA TER MH -62 ER RG Dock Insert PV-12 (for ImageLinkcompatible printer) Audio Video/USB Cable UC-E12 · Warranty · Software Suite (CD) First Steps Step 1 Attach the Camera Strap Attach the camera strap as shown. Step 2 Charge the Battery The camera uses a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL8 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Charger MH-62 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. 2.1 Connect the power cable to the charger 1 and then plug it into a power outlet 2. The CHARGE lamp will light 3. 3 2 1 2.2 Remove the battery terminal cover and insert the battery as shown, matching the indentations in the battery to the projections on the charger. 2.3 The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking. A fully exhausted battery charges in about two hours. 3 First Steps Step 3 Insert the Battery After charging the battery, insert it as described below. 3.1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 3.2 The orange battery latch is pushed up 1 as the battery is inserted 2. The latch drops back into place when the battery is fully inserted. Inserting the Battery Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation. 3.3 Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Removing the Battery Turn the camera off before removing or inserting batteries. To eject the battery, open the batterychamber/memory card slot cover and slide the battery latch in the direction shown 1. The battery can then be removed by hand 2. Note that the battery may become hot during use; observe due caution when removing the battery. 4 First Steps Step 4 Turn On the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. Power Saving Function If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute in all modes, the monitor will turn off; after a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory. If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording and deletion only if no memory card inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3.1 and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3.3. 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed in the monitor, the memory card must be Card is not formatted. formatted before it can be used in the camera. Use Format card? the rotary multi selector to choose [Yes] and press d. The confirmation dialog will be displayed. To No start formatting, choose [Format] and press d. Yes Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. Do not turn the camera off or open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover until formatting is complete. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand. 5 First Steps Step 5 Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Rotary Multi Selector Use the rotary multi selector to choose and apply settings. Rotate in either direction to choose items Press d to apply selection In the descriptions that follow, how to use the rotary multi selector to perform a task are shown in gray. 5.1 5.2 Date Set time and date? No Yes Choose the desired language and press d. Choose [Yes] and press d. The time zone menu is displayed. If daylight saving time is in effect, press the rotary multi selector down to highlight [Daylight saving] and press d to select. Press the rotary multi selector up to return to Step 5.3. 5.3 Time zone XLondon,Casablanca Daylight saving Press d. Edit the day and press d. 5.6 Date D M Y 5.7 11 2007 00 Date D M Y 15 00 15 15 11 10 2007 Edit the month and press d. · Edit the year and time in the same manner. Choose the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed and press d. · The settings are applied and monitor display exits to the L (auto) mode. When daylight saving time ends, turn [Daylight saving] off from the date menu in the setup menu. The camera's clock is automatically set back one hour. Page 105 of the User's Manual 7 Taking Pictures Step 1 Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. L (auto) mode M is displayed in L (auto) mode. To select other shooting modes, press C (c 14). Pages 20 to 25 of the User's Manual Internal memory indicator Pictures will be recorded to internal memory (approximately 13 MB). When memory card is inserted, M is not displayed and pictures will be recorded to memory card. L M w W Vibration reduction (VR) icon Reduce the effects of camera shake. Image mode Choose image size and quality from the image mode menu. Page 87 of the User's Manual 8 Taking Pictures Step 2 Ready the Camera Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash. Step 3 Frame a Picture Frame the subject near the center of the monitor. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background. L The zoom buttons Press v to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press t to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. M W 5 9 Taking Pictures Step 4 Focus and Shoot 4.1 Press the shutter-release button halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. The camera automatically focuses on the subject in the center focus area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash. Focus indicator On (green) Subject in focus. L p M W 5 p Blinks red Camera unable to focus. Change composition and try again. For further information, see "Autofocus" on page 25 of the User's Guide. Flash indicator/flash lamp On (red) Blinks red Off Flash will fire when picture is taken. Flash charging. Flash off or not required. When pictures are taken using the flash and a low battery, the monitor display will turn off and the flash lamp will blink until the flash is fully charged. 10 Taking Pictures 4.2 Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to take the picture. Page 26 of the User's Manual 11 Taking Pictures Deleting Unwanted Pictures To delete the picture currently displayed in the monitor, press T. A confirmation dialog will be displayed; highlight one of the following options and press d: · [No]: Exit without deleting the picture. · [Yes]: Delete the picture. Erase 1 image? No Yes Step 6 Turn the camera off Press the power switch to turn the camera off. The power-on lamp will go out. Using Camera Menus A variety of shooting and playback settings can be adjusted from the camera menus. Press m to display the menu for the current mode and use the rotary multi selector to select an option as described on page 6. If a "?" icon is displayed in the monitor, help for the current menu item can be viewed by pressing v (l). Page 86 of the User's Manual Shooting menu Image mode White balance Continuous BSS ISO sensitivity Exit 12 Other Functions Flash Mode, Self-Timer, Macro Mode, and Exposure Compensation Pressing the rotary multi selector up, down, left, or right during shooting displays the flash mode, self-timer, macro mode, and exposure compensation menus. Flash Mode The following flash modes are available. Mode Description z z Auto Auto with A red-eye reduction B C D Off Fill flash Slow sync Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor. Reduces "red eye" in portraits. Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor. Flash fires when picture is taken. Use to "fill-in" (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects. Flash illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background at night or under dim light. Flash mode Page 28 of the User's Manual Exposure Compensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. When the picture is too dark: adjust the expo- Exposure compensation sure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "-" side. Page 32 of the User's Manual Macro Mode Use for close-ups. When the F icon glows green, the camera can focus at distances as close as 4 cm (1.6 in.) from the lens. Page 31 of the User's Manual Self-Timer The camera is equipped with ten- and three-second timers for selfportraits. When using the self-timer, mount the camera on a tripod (recommended) or rest it on a flat, level surface. To select scene mode, press C in shooting mode, then select n and press d. To choose a scene mode, press m to display the scene menu, then highlight the scene and press d.
