Attach the Camera Strap
Attach the camera strap as shown.

Insert the Battery
The camera uses a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL8 (supplied). Insert the battery as described below.
2.1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot
cover.
2.2 The orange battery latch is pushed up 1 as
the battery is inserted 2. The latch drops back into place when the battery is fully inserted.
Inserting the Battery Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation.

Removing the Battery Turn the camera off before removing or inserting batteries. To eject the battery, open the batterychamber/memory card slot cover and slide the battery latch in the direction shown 1. The battery can then be removed by hand 2. Note that the battery may become hot during use; observe due caution when removing the battery.

Charge the Battery
After inserting the battery, charge it with the AC Adapter EH-64 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low.

The power-on lamp (orange) stops blinking when charging is complete. A fully exhausted battery will recharge in about two hours.

Turn On the Camera
Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will light.
Power Saving Function If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute in all modes, the monitor will turn off; after a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory. If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording and deletion only if no memory card inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.1 on page 3 and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover as shown in Step 2.3 on the previous page. 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed in the monitor, the memory card Card is not formatted. must be formatted before it can be used in the Format card? camera. Use the rotary multi selector to choose [Yes] and press d. The confirmation dialog will No be displayed. To start formatting, choose [Format] Yes and press d. Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. Do not turn the camera off or open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover until formatting is complete. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the poweron lamp is off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand.

Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock
A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Rotary Multi Selector Use the rotary multi selector to choose and apply settings.

Check Indicators in the Monitor
Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining.
L (auto) mode M is displayed in L (auto) mode. To select other shooting modes, press C (c 14). Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens and flash.

Frame a Picture
Frame the subject near the center of the monitor. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background.

Focus and Shoot

the shutter-release button halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. The camera automatically focuses on the subject in the center focus area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash. Focus indicator

Turn the camera off
Press the power switch to turn the camera off. The power-on lamp will go out.
Using Camera Menus A variety of shooting and playback settings can be adjusted from the camera menus. Press m to display the menu for the current mode and use the rotary multi selector to select an option as described on page 6. If a "?" icon is displayed in the monitor, help for the current menu item can be viewed by pressing v (l). Page 88 of the User's Manual

Flash Mode, Self-Timer, Macro Mode, and Exposure Compensation
Pressing the rotary multi selector up, down, left, or right during shooting displays the flash mode, self-timer, macro mode, and exposure compensation menus.
Flash Mode The following flash modes are available.

Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor. Reduces "red eye" in portraits. Flash will not fire even when lighting is poor. Flash fires when picture is taken. Use to "fill-in" (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects. Flash illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background at night or under dim light.

Exposure Compensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. When the picture is too dark: adjust the expo- Exposure compensation sure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "-" side. Page 34 of the User's Manual Macro Mode Use for close-ups. When the F icon glows green, the camera can focus at distances as close as 4 cm (1.6 in.) from the lens. Page 33 of the User's Manual Self-Timer The camera is equipped with ten- and three-second timers for selfportraits. When using the self-timer, mount the camera on a tripod (recommended) or rest it on a flat, level surface. Page 32 of the User's Manual

Installing Nikon Transfer
Nikon Transfer can be used to copy (transfer) pictures to a computer for storage. Install Nikon Transfer from the supplied Software Suite (CD). For further information, refer to the help information contained in the Software Suite (CD) or in Nikon Transfer.
Before You Begin: Nikon Transfer System Requirements
Confirm that your system meets the following requirements.

Installing Nikon Transfer
Before Installing Exit all other applications and turn off any virus-checking software before beginning Nikon Transfer installation. When Installing, Using, or Uninstalling Nikon Transfer Log on to an account with administrator privileges.
NOTE: Depending on your operating system, the dialogs displayed during installation may differ from those shown here. The illustrations in this guide are from Windows Vista.

Turn the computer on and insert the Software Suite CD into the CDROM drive.
Windows Vista Choose [Run Welcome.exe] in the AutoPlay dialog to start the install program. Proceed to step 3. Windows XP/2000 The install program will start automatically. Proceed to step 3. If the Install Program Does Not Start Automatically (Windows only) Windows Vista/XP Open Computer by selecting [Computer] from the [Start] menu (Windows Vista), open My Computer by selecting [My Computer] from the [Start] menu (Windows XP), and double-click the [Software Suite] CD icon. Windows 2000 Professional Double-click the [My Computer] icon on the desktop and then doubleclick the [Software Suite] CD icon. Mac OS X Double-click the [Software Suite] CD icon on the desktop and then double-click the [Welcome] icon.

Confirm the language and click [Next].
If Nikon Transfer Is Already Installed The Language Selection dialog will not be displayed if Nikon Transfer is installed. The Install Center window is displayed in the language selected when Nikon Transfer was first installed.

Click [Nikon Standard Install].
Install Nikon Transfer and related software.
Other Installation Options [Custom Install]: Install selected software. To install the my Picturetown Utility, click [Custom Install] and select [my Picturetown Utility] (not available under Windows 2000 Professional). Windows Click [Next] and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Mac OS X The license agreement will be displayed. After taking the time to read and understand the contents of this agreement, click [Accept] and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. Proceed to step 7.

Click [Yes] to Install QuickTime* (Windows only).
Installation may take several minutes on some systems. See the Apple Inc. website for Windows Vista support information. Nikon recommends downloading and installing the most up-to-date version of QuickTime for Windows Vista.

Install Nikon Transfer.
Windows Click [Next]. The license agreement will be displayed. After taking the time to read and understand the contents of this agreement, click [Yes] to accept its terms and display the ReadMe file. After reviewing the contents of this file, which may contain important information that could not be included here, click [Continue] and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Proceed to step 9. Mac OS X The license agreement will be displayed. After taking the time to read and understand the contents of this agreement, click [Accept] and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Activate the Auto-Launch setting (Macintosh only).
When the Auto-Launch setting dialog is displayed, click [Yes] to have Nikon Transfer start automatically whenever the camera is connected. The Auto-Launch Setting The Auto-Launch option can also be enabled after installation of Nikon Transfer by checking the [Launch automatically when device is attached] option in the transfer options [Preferences] panel.

Click [Finish] (Windows) or [Quit] (Macintosh) and follow the on-screen instructions to close the Install Center window.
If prompted to restart the computer, follow the on-screen instructions. Windows XP/2000 If DirectX 9 is not already installed, a DirectX 9 installer dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9.

Remove the Software Suite CD from the CD-ROM drive.
This completes installation. Proceed to "Transferring Pictures to a Computer" (c 21).

Transferring Pictures to a Computer
Use a Reliable Power Source Nikon recommends using a fully charged battery to power the camera for extended periods. If You Are Using Windows 2000 Professional Use a card reader or similar device to transfer pictures stored on the memory card to the computer (c 23).

Turn off the camera. Connect the camera to the computer using the supplied audio video/ USB cable.
Check to be sure that the connector is in the correct orientation and insert the plug straight. Do not insert or disconnect it forcibly.

Turn on the camera.
Windows Vista/XP When the AutoPlay dialog is displayed, select [Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Nikon Transfer] (Windows Vista) or [Nikon Transfer Copy pictures to a folder on my computer] (Windows XP), and click [OK] (Windows XP only). To bypass this dialog in the future, check [Always do this for this device:] (Windows Vista), or [Always use this program for this action.] (Windows XP). Nikon Transfer will start. Mac OS X Nikon Transfer will start automatically if [Yes] was selected in the Auto-Launch setting dialog when Nikon Transfer was first installed.

Confirm that the source device is displayed in the transfer options [Source] panel and click [Start Transfer].
At the Nikon Transfer default setting, all pictures are transferred to the computer. At the Nikon Transfer default setting, the folder to which pictures are transferred is automatically opened.

Disconnect the camera.
Turn the camera off and disconnect the audio video/USB cable. Pictures can be displayed in the viewer supplied with your operating system.

Transferring Pictures to a Computer
For Users of Windows 2000 Professional Use a card reader or similar device to transfer the pictures stored on the memory card to the computer. If your memory card has a capacity greater than 2 GB, the intended device must support the memory card. · At the Nikon Transfer default settings, Nikon Transfer will start automatically when a memory card is inserted into the card reader or similar device. See step 4 (c 22) of "Transferring Pictures to a Computer." · Do not connect the camera to the computer. If the camera is connected to the computer, the [Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog will be displayed. Select [Cancel], close the dialog, and disconnect the camera from the computer. · To transfer pictures stored in the camera's internal memory to the computer, the pictures must first be copied to a memory card using the camera. Pages 73 and 102 of the User's Manual
