First Steps
Step 1--Attach the Camera Strap

Connect the COOL-STATION to the AC adapter and check that the power lamp on the AC adapter is lit.

After confirming that the camera power-on lamp is off, place the camera in the COOLSTATION as shown, making sure the camera connector is fully inserted in the matching connector on the COOL-STATION.
To charge the battery without using the COOLSTATION, turn the camera off and connect the AC adapter directly to the camera multi connector.

The indicator lamp next to the camera monitor will blink green while the battery charges.
An exhausted battery charges in about two hours.
Charging is complete when the lamp stops blinking. Remove the camera from the COOLSTATION and unplug the AC adapter.
Step 3--Turn the Camera On Press the power switch to turn the camera on.
Auto off (Stand-by Mode) If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute in all modes, the monitor will turn off; after a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically.

Step 4--Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date.

Taking Pictures
Step 1--Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining.

The camera stores pictures in internal memory (approximately 20 MB) or on removable Secure Digital (SD) memory cards (available separately; a list of approved memory cards is provided on page 90 of the Guide to Digital Photography). Pictures are stored in internal memory when no memory card is inserted.

Step 2--Ready the Camera Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, antenna, self-timer lamp, and microphone.
Step 3--Frame a Picture Use the zoom control to frame the subject in the center of the monitor, shown by the center AF area ( ).
The zoom control Select T zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Select W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame.

Taking Pictures
Step 4--Focus and Shoot
4.1
Lightly press the shutter-release button about halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. The camera will set focus and exposure for the subject in the center AF area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash:
Focus indicator On (green) Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus. Change composition Blinks red and try again. Flash lamp On (red) Flash will fire when picture is taken. Blinks red Flash charging. Off Flash off or not required.

Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to release the shutter and take the picture. To prevent blur, avoid moving the camera while pressing the shutter-release button.

Step 5--View Pictures
5.1

Pictures taken in "tall" orientation are displayed in "tall" orientation as shown at right.
Use the rotary multi selector to view other pic- View previous picture tures. Rotate the rotary multi selector clockwise to view pictures in the order recorded, counterclockwise to view pictures in reverse order. To delete the current picture, press the button. A confirmation dialog will be displayed; highView next picture light Yes and press the button. Press the button again to return to shooting mode.

Press the power switch to turn the camera off. The power-on lamp will go out.

Installing PictureProject
The following software can be installed using the supplied installer CD: · PictureProject--Transfer pictures to a computer for easy viewing and storage · Wireless Camera Setup Utility--Configure the camera for wireless transfer
PictureProject
Install the supplied PictureProject software to transfer pictures to a computer for easy viewing and storage. The main controls in the PictureProject are shown below. See the PictureProject reference manual on the silver CD for details.
Organize: View and organize pictures. Edit: Crop pictures, adjust brightness and hue, and use other retouch tools.
Collection list: Group pictures into collections and folders.
Picture list: View the pictures in the current collection or folder.
Design: Arrange pictures.
PictureProject can also be used for a variety of other tasks, including printing pictures, sending pictures by e-mail, viewing slide shows, and copying pictures to CD or DVD (requires Windows or Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or later).
Software Updates If the computer is connected to the Internet, PictureProject will periodically check for updates. If an update is detected when PictureProject starts, an update dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to update to the latest version of PictureProject.

Wireless Transfer and Printing
Using the camera's built-in IEEE 802.11b/g wireless transmitter, you can: · Transmit pictures to a computer for storage and editing · Save pictures directly to the computer hard disk as they are taken · Print pictures on a printer connected to a wireless network (if the optional PD-10 wireless printer adapter is used with a PictBridge printer, the printer need not be connected to a computer) Connecting to a Wireless Network Wireless transfer and printing requires a wireless local-area network (LAN) compatible with the IEEE 802.11b/g standard. The network can consist of the camera in peer-to-peer communication with a single computer equipped with a wireless LAN adapter (ad-hoc mode; IEEE 802.11b only) or of a camera connected to a wireless network via a wireless LAN access point (infrastructure mode).

Wireless transfer is available with computers running Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 or later (Service Pack 2 or later recommended) or Mac OS X version 10.3 or later.
Czech, Danish, Finnish, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, and Thai In addition to the languages included with the installer, the Wireless Camera Setup Utility is available for download in the languages listed above. Please note, however, that PictureProject is not available in these languages. To install the Czech, Danish, Finnish, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, or Thai version of the Wireless Camera Setup Utility, select English when installing PictureProject.

Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. Insert the yellow installer CD. The Install Center program will start and a "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. If the computer is not configured for wireless LAN, uses fixed IP addressing or is running Windows Service Pack 1, the dialog shown in Step 10.4 will not be displayed; enter network settings manually as described on page 21.

Apple QuickTime If an out-of-date version of QuickTime is installed, the QuickTime installer will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. When the dialog shown at right is displayed, click Continue. Do not complete the "Registered To," "Organization," and "Registration Number" fields. On some systems, the QuickTime installer may require considerable time to complete installation.

Installing Nikon Fotoshare (Europe Only) To install Nikon Fotoshare (available only in Europe), open the "Fotoshare" folder on the PictureProject installer CD and drag Nikon Fotoshare to the "Applications" folder on the computer hard disk.

Copying Pictures to a Computer Via USB
Before You Begin Before copying pictures to a computer, confirm that: · PictureProject is installed: If PictureProject is not installed before the camera is connected, a hardware wizard may be displayed. Click Cancel to exit and then disconnect the camera. · Use a Reliable Power Source: To prevent the camera from turning off unexpectedly during connection, use fully charged batteries or the supplied AC adapter. · The appropriate option is selected in the camera USB menu: If you are using Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows 98 SE, you will need to change the Interface > USB option in the camera setup menu from PTP (the default setting) to Mass Storage. Press the MENU button to display the shooting menu and follow the steps below.

Turn the camera off. Use the USB cable to connect the COOL-STATION to the computer as shown below. Connect the COOL-STATION directly to the computer; do not connect the cable via a USB hub or keyboard. Do not use force.

Place the camera in the COOL-STATION and turn the camera on. PictureProject will automatically detect the camera and the PictureProject Transfer window will be displayed in the computer monitor. Click Transfer to copy all the pictures in the camera memory to the computer.

Macintosh Windows XP If the dialog shown at right is displayed, select PictureProject and click OK. To bypass this dialog in future, check Always use this program for this action.
Wireless Transfer and Printing Pictures can also be transferred or printed over wireless networks. See pages 71 of the Guide to Digital Photography for more information.

Disconnecting the Camera
· Windows XP/Mac OS X: Turn the camera off and remove it from the COOL-STATION. · Windows 2000: Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" ( ) icon in the taskbar and select Stop USB Mass Storage Device. Turn the camera off and remove it from the COOL-STATION. · Windows Me: Click the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" ( ) icon in the taskbar and select Stop USB Disk. Turn the camera off and remove it from the COOLSTATION. · Windows 98 SE: In My Computer, right click on the removable disk corresponding to the camera and select Eject. Turn the camera off and remove it from the COOL-STATION.
