See page 90 of the Guide to Digital Photography for a list of approved memory cards. 2 First Steps Step 1--Attach the Camera Strap Step 2--Charge the Battery 2.1 Insert the battery in the camera. Orange battery latch pushed aside as the battery is inserted Be sure battery is in orientation shown Inserting the Battery Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation. Stop when battery latch clicks back into place 3 First Steps 2.2 Connect the COOL-STATION to the AC adapter and check that the power lamp on the AC adapter is lit. 2.3 After confirming that the camera power-on lamp is off, place the camera in the COOLSTATION as shown, making sure the camera connector is fully inserted in the matching connector on the COOL-STATION. To charge the battery without using the COOLSTATION, turn the camera off and connect the AC adapter directly to the camera multi connector. 4 2.4 The indicator lamp next to the camera monitor will blink green while the battery charges. An exhausted battery charges in about two hours. Charging is complete when the lamp stops blinking. Remove the camera from the COOLSTATION and unplug the AC adapter. Step 3--Turn the Camera On Press the power switch to turn the camera on. Auto off (Stand-by Mode) If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute in all modes, the monitor will turn off; after a further three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. 5 First Steps Step 4--Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Rotary Multi Selector Use the rotary multi selector to navigate the camera menus. Rotate: highlight item Press center ( ): select item 4.1 4.2 Highlight language. Confirmation dialog displayed. 4.3 4.4 Highlight Yes. TIME ZONE menu displayed.* * If daylight saving time is in effect, press rotary multi selector down to highlight DaylightSaving and press to select. Press rotary multi selector up to return to Step 4.4. 4.5 4.6 Display map of world time zones. Select home time zone. 6 4.7 4.8 Display DATE menu. Edit Day (order of Day, Month, and Year may differ in some areas). 4.9 4.10 Select Month. Repeat Steps 4.8­4.9 to edit Month, Year, hour, and minute. Highlight D M Y. 4.11 4.12 Choose date display order. Set clock. 7 Taking Pictures Step 1--Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. Internal memory/memory card indicator Display Description Pictures will be recorded to internal memory. Pictures will be recorded to memory card. Number of exposures remaining Battery level indicator Display Description NO ICON Battery fully charged. Low battery. Prepare to recharge or change battery. WARNING!! Battery exhausted. Recharge or change battery. BATTERY EXHAUSTED Where Are My Pictures Stored? The camera stores pictures in internal memory (approximately 20 MB) or on removable Secure Digital (SD) memory cards (available separately; a list of approved memory cards is provided on page 90 of the Guide to Digital Photography). Pictures are stored in internal memory when no memory card is inserted. 8 Step 2--Ready the Camera Hold the camera steady in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, antenna, self-timer lamp, and microphone. Step 3--Frame a Picture Use the zoom control to frame the subject in the center of the monitor, shown by the center AF area ( ). The zoom control Select T zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Select W to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. 9 Taking Pictures Step 4--Focus and Shoot 4.1 Lightly press the shutter-release button about halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. The camera will set focus and exposure for the subject in the center AF area. Focus and exposure remain locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, check focus and flash: Focus indicator On (green) Subject in focus. Camera unable to focus. Change composition Blinks red and try again. Flash lamp On (red) Flash will fire when picture is taken. Blinks red Flash charging. Off Flash off or not required. 4 .2 Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to release the shutter and take the picture. To prevent blur, avoid moving the camera while pressing the shutter-release button. 10 Step 5--View Pictures 5.1 Press the monitor. button to view a picture in the button Pictures taken in "tall" orientation are displayed in "tall" orientation as shown at right. Use the rotary multi selector to view other pic- View previous picture tures. Rotate the rotary multi selector clockwise to view pictures in the order recorded, counterclockwise to view pictures in reverse order. To delete the current picture, press the button. A confirmation dialog will be displayed; highView next picture light Yes and press the button. Press the button again to return to shooting mode. 5.2 Press the power switch to turn the camera off. The power-on lamp will go out. 11 Installing PictureProject The following software can be installed using the supplied installer CD: · PictureProject--Transfer pictures to a computer for easy viewing and storage · Wireless Camera Setup Utility--Configure the camera for wireless transfer PictureProject Install the supplied PictureProject software to transfer pictures to a computer for easy viewing and storage. The main controls in the PictureProject are shown below. See the PictureProject reference manual on the silver CD for details. Organize: View and organize pictures. Edit: Crop pictures, adjust brightness and hue, and use other retouch tools. Collection list: Group pictures into collections and folders. Picture list: View the pictures in the current collection or folder. Design: Arrange pictures. PictureProject can also be used for a variety of other tasks, including printing pictures, sending pictures by e-mail, viewing slide shows, and copying pictures to CD or DVD (requires Windows or Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or later). Software Updates If the computer is connected to the Internet, PictureProject will periodically check for updates. If an update is detected when PictureProject starts, an update dialog will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to update to the latest version of PictureProject. 12 Wireless Transfer and Printing Using the camera's built-in IEEE 802.11b/g wireless transmitter, you can: · Transmit pictures to a computer for storage and editing · Save pictures directly to the computer hard disk as they are taken · Print pictures on a printer connected to a wireless network (if the optional PD-10 wireless printer adapter is used with a PictBridge printer, the printer need not be connected to a computer) Connecting to a Wireless Network Wireless transfer and printing requires a wireless local-area network (LAN) compatible with the IEEE 802.11b/g standard. The network can consist of the camera in peer-to-peer communication with a single computer equipped with a wireless LAN adapter (ad-hoc mode; IEEE 802.11b only) or of a camera connected to a wireless network via a wireless LAN access point (infrastructure mode). Ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) network Infrastructure network Computer with built-in or external wireless LAN adapter Wireless LAN access point Wireless transfer is available with computers running Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 or later (Service Pack 2 or later recommended) or Mac OS X version 10.3 or later. Czech, Danish, Finnish, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, and Thai In addition to the languages included with the installer, the Wireless Camera Setup Utility is available for download in the languages listed above. Please note, however, that PictureProject is not available in these languages. To install the Czech, Danish, Finnish, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, or Thai version of the Wireless Camera Setup Utility, select English when installing PictureProject. 13 Installing PictureProject Before You Begin: System Requirements Confirm that your system meets the following requirements: Windows 300 MHz Pentium or better recommended (550 MHz Pentium III or better recommended for Pictmotion) Preinstalled versions of Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP ProfesOS sional, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Hard disk space 60 MB required for installation RAM Minimum 64 MB (128 MB for Pictmotion) Video resolution 800 × 600 or more with 16-bit color (High Color) or better Miscellaneous Only computers with built-in USB ports supported CPU Macintosh OS Hard disk space RAM Video resolution Miscellaneous Mac OS X version 10.1.5 or later (10.2.8 or later required for Burn Disc) 60 MB required for installation Minimum 64 MB 800 × 600 or more with 16-bit color (thousands of colors) or better Only computers with built-in USB ports supported Exit All Other Applications Exit all other applications and turn off any virus-checking software. Notice to Users of Nikon Capture For information on using PictureProject with Nikon Capture, see the PictureProject reference manual on the silver CD. 14 Important! Windows .........................pg. 15 Macintosh ...................... pg. 23 Windows Installing PictureProject: Windows Windows XP/Windows 2000 Log on to an account with administrator privileges when installing, using, or uninstalling PictureProject. 1 2 Turn the computer on and wait for Windows to start up. Insert the yellow installer CD. The Install Center program will start and a "Select Region" dialog will be displayed. Select a region and click Next. (The "Select Region" dialog is not displayed in the European release of PictureProject. European users can proceed directly to Step 3.) If the Install Center Does Not Start Open the "My Computer" window by selecting My Computer from the Start menu (Windows XP) or by double-clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop (other versions of Windows), then double-click the CD (PictureProject) icon. 3 Select a language and click Next. to install the following: 4 · Click Easy InstallCOOLPIX cameras (Windows PTP drivers for XP only) · Nikon Mass Storage Camera Drivers (Windows 98 SE only) · Panorama Maker · Apple QuickTime · Nikon Fotoshare (Europe only) · PictureProject · Wireless Camera Setup Utility (Windows XP only) · Microsoft DirectX 9 Try other Nikon Software: Download trial versions of Nikon software from the Internet. Internet connection required. 15 Installing PictureProject Installing Drivers (Windows XP/Windows 98 SE Only) Follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers. On some Windows XP systems the installation may be performed by a wizard. Windows XP Windows 98 SE 5 Follow the on-screen instructions to install Panorama Maker. 6 7 8 Click Yes to install QuickTime (some time may be required to complete installation on some systems). Follow the on-screen instructions to install Fotoshare (Europe only). Read the license agreement and click Yes. NOTE: The dialogs displayed during installation may differ from those shown here. 16 Windows 9 Click Browse... choose a destination folder for PictureProject, or click Next to install PictureProject to the folder shown.
