Shape of power cable depends on country of use. NOTE: Memory card not provided. See page 115 of the User's Manual for a list of approved memory cards. Viewing the Camera User's Manual on CD The User's Manual can be viewed using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later, available for free download from the Adobe website. 1 Start the computer and insert the User's Manual CD. 2 Double-click the CD [COOLPIX S700] icon in Computer (Windows Vista) or My Computer (Windows XP/2000), or on the desktop (Macintosh). 3 Double-click the [INDEX.pdf ] icon to display a language selection screen. Click a language and follow the links to view the User's Manual. A: This icon indicates that more information is available elsewhere in this guide. 2 Introduction First Steps Step 1 Attach the Camera Strap Attach the camera strap as shown. Step 2 Charge the Battery Charge the Rechargable Li-ion Battery EN-EL10 (supplied) using the Battery Charger MH-63 (supplied). 2.1 Connect the power cable to the battery charger 1 and then plug it into a power outlet 2. The CHARGE lamp will light up 3. CH AR GE LI TH IU M IO N BA TT ER MH Y -63AR GE CH R 2 1 3 CHARGE 2.2 Set the battery in the battery charger as shown at right. CH AR GE LI TH IU M IO N BA TT ER R -63 GE MH CH AR Y 2.3 The CHARGE lamp will blink when charging starts. The CHARGE lamp will stop blinking when charging is complete. A fully exhausted battery will recharge in about 100 minutes. CHARGE CHARGE First Steps 3 Step 3 Insert the Battery Insert the fully charged battery into the camera. 3.1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 3.2 Insert the battery. Use the battery to push the orange battery latch up 1 as the battery is inserted 2. The battery latch will spring back into place when the battery is fully inserted. Battery latch Inserting the Battery Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation. 3.3 Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Removing the Battery Turn the camera off and confirm that power-on lamp is off before removing or inserting battery. To eject the battery, open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and slide the battery latch in the direction shown 1. The battery can then be removed by hand 2. Note that the battery may become hot during use; observe due caution when removing the battery. 4 First Steps Step 4 Turn On the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will be lit and the monitor will turn on. Pressing the power switch when the poweron lamp (green) is on will turn the camera off. Power Saving Function If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no operations are performed for about a minute in all modes, the monitor will turn off; after another three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically. Memory Cards By default, pictures are stored in the camera's internal memory (approximately 52 MB). If desired, a removable Secure Digital (SD) memory card can be used for additional storage. Internal memory is used for recording, deletion, and transfer only if no memory card is inserted. To insert a memory card: 1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3.1 on the previous page and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3.3 on the previous page. 3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is displayed in the monitor, the memory card must be formatted before it Card is not formatted. can be used in the camera. Use the rotary multi selector (A 6) to Format card? highlight [Yes] and press k. A confirmation dialog is displayed. No To start formatting, choose [Format] and press k. Yes Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep. Do not turn the camera off or open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover until formatting is complete. To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand. First Steps 5 Step 5 Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date. The Rotary Multi Selector Use the rotary multi selector to choose and apply settings. Operate the rotary multi selector by pressing it up, down, right, left, or by pressing k. Move the highlight up. Items can also be highlighted by rotating the rotary multi selector. Advance to the next screen (move the highlight to the right). Return to the previous screen (move the highlight to the left). Apply selection. Move the highlight down. In the instructions that follow, rotary multi selector buttons used to perform operations are indicated with white circles. 5.1 5.2 Date Set time and date? No Yes Choose the desired language and press k. Choose [Yes] and press k. The time zone menu is displayed. If daylight saving time is in effect, press the rotary multi selector down to highlight [Daylight saving] and press k to select. Press the rotary multi selector up to return to Step 5.3. 5.3 Time zone London,Casablanca Daylight saving Press k. The home time zone menu is displayed. 6 First Steps 5.4 Home time zone 5.5 Date D M Y 01 London,Casablanca Back 09 00 00 2007 Select your home time zone and press k. The date menu is displayed. Edit the date. Press the rotary multi selector up or down to edit the highlighted item. Press right to move the highlight in the following order. [D] (day) [M] (month) [Y] (year) hour minute [D M Y] (the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed) Press the rotary multi selector left to return to the previous item. 5.6 Date D M Y 15 15 11 10 2007 Choose the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed and press k. · The settings are applied and monitor display exits to shooting mode. When daylight saving time ends, turn [Daylight saving] off from the [Date] menu in the setup menu. The camera's clock is automatically set back one hour. Page 103 of the User's Manual. First Steps 7 Taking Pictures Step 1 Check Indicators in the Monitor Check the battery level and number of exposures remaining. Shooting mode A is displayed in A (auto) mode. Internal memory indicator Pictures will be recorded to internal memory (approximately 52 MB). When a memory card is inserted, C is not displayed and pictures will be recorded to memory card. Vibration reduction (VR) icon Reduce the effects of camera shake. Page 109 of the User's Manual 17 Number of exposures remaining Battery level indicator NO INDICATOR B N Warning! Battery exhausted. Battery fully charged. Battery low; prepare to replace or charge the battery. Cannot shoot pictures. Recharge or replace with a fully charged battery. Image mode Display image size and quality set in the image mode menu. The default setting is L Normal (4,000 x 3,000). Page 82 of the User's Manual 8 Taking Pictures Step 2 Ready the Camera Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash and self-timer lamp. When taking pictures in "tall" orientation, turn the camera clockwise so that the built-in flash is above the lens. Step 3 Frame a Picture When the camera recognizes a face looking foward the camera, that face will be framed by a yellow double border (by default). If more than one face is recognized, the face closest to the camera will be framed by a double border and the rest by a single border. Focus area will not appear when shooting pictures of subjects other than people, or framing a subject with which no face is recognized. Modify composition by using the zoom buttons to zoom in for a close-up of the subject, or zoom out to include more of the background. The zoom buttons Press g to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area of the frame. Press f to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame. 17 Taking Pictures 9 Step 4 Focus and Shoot 4.1 Press the shutter-release button halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. When a face looking toward the camera is recognized: Camera will focus on the face surrounded by a double border. · Once focus has been locked, the double border will glow green. · When the camera is unable to focus, the double border will blink. Press the shutterrelease button halfway and try focusing again. Flash lamp 17 When shooting pictures of subjects other than people or framing a subject with which no face is recognized: Camera automatically selects the focus area (one of nine) containing the subject closest to the camera. 17 · When the subject is in focus, the active focus area and the Focus indicator focus indicator (Q) glow green. · When the camera is unable to focus, the focus area and the focus indicator will blink red. Change the composition and try again. Focus remains locked while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. 10 Taking Pictures With the shutter-release button pressed halfway, you can also check the flash lamp. Flash lamp On Blinks Off Flash will fire when picture is shot. Flash charging*. Flash off or not required. * When pictures are shot using the flash and a low battery, the monitor display will turn off and the flash lamp will blink until the flash is fully charged. 4.2 Smoothly press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down to shoot. Do not use force when pressing the shutter-release button, as this may cause camera shake, resulting in blurred pictures. Taking Pictures 11 Step 5 View Pictures Press c. The camera enters playback mode, and the picture is displayed in the monitor in full-frame playback mode. 15/11/2007 15:30 0004.JPG c n 4/ 4 Use the rotary multi selector to view other pictures. Press the rotary multi selector right or down to view pictures in the order recorded, left or up to view pictures in reverse order. Press c or the shutter-release button to switch to shooting mode. View previous picture View next picture The following operations can be performed in full-frame playback mode. To Zoom in on displayed picture Display groups of 4, 9, or 16 thumbnail images in the monitor (thumbnail playback) Select a picture in thumbnail wheel playback mode (after selecting a picture, press k to return to full-frame playback mode). Record/play voice memo k Use g (i) f (h) Page 26 of the User's Manual Deleting Unwanted Pictures To delete the picture currently displayed in the monitor, press l. When a confirmation dialog is displayed, use the rotary multi selector to select [Yes]. Press k to delete the picture. Deleted pictures cannot be restored. To exit without deleting the picture, select [No] and press k. Erase 1 image? No Yes 12 Taking Pictures Other Functions Flash Mode, Self-timer, Macro Mode and Exposure Compensation Use the rotary multi selector in shooting mode to apply the following settings. Flash The flash modes available are U (auto), V (auto with red-eye reduction), W (off), X (fill flash), and Y (slow sync) modes. Page 28 of the User's Manual Flash mode Exposure Compensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. When the picture is too dark: adjust the Exposure compensation exposure compensation to "+" side. When the picture is too bright: adjust the exposure compensation to "-" side. Page 32 of the User's Manual Macro Mode Use for close-ups. When the F icon glows green, the camera can focus at distances as close as 6 cm (2.4 in.) from the lens.
