User's Guide Stylus Photo RX500 How To Copy and Print Film holder Software CD-ROM Paper support Ink cartridges (6 total) 2 Remove all the tape. Document mat continue 2 Unlock the Scanner 1 Open the scanner lid, as shown. Remove the instruction sheet covering the scanner glass. Slide the transportation lock to the unlocked position. Caution: You must unlock the scanner, or it won't work. 2 3 Store the Film Holder 1 Slide the document mat handle to the left and remove the document mat. 2 Hold the film holder so the labelling faces out and insert the tabs in the notches inside the scanner lid. 3 Place the tabs on the right side of the document mat in the notches inside the scanner lid. Then place the handle on the left inside the notch and slide the mat to the right to lock it in place. 4 Close the scanner lid. 4 Unlock the Printer 1 Lift up the entire scanner unit using the handles on the side. 2 Remove the orange plastic print head holder. Caution: You must remove the orange print head holder or the RX500 won't work. 3 Store the orange print head holder in the storage area. 4 Close the scanner unit. 5 Plug In and Turn On 1 2 Plug the RX500 into a grounded electrical outlet. Do not connect a USB cable yet. Press and hold the On button until the green Mode lights begin to flash. On button 6 Install Ink Cartridges 1 2 Press the Color button on the front of the RX500. The print head moves into loading position. Lift up the entire scanner unit. 3 4 Open the cartridge cover by pulling it toward you. Remove the ink cartridges from their packages. Caution: You must install all the cartridges and leave them installed for all types of printing. To avoid damaging the RX500, never move the print head by hand. 5 Lower each cartridge into the holder marked with the corresponding color. continue 6 Press down on each cartridge until it clicks into place. Then close the ink cartridge cover. Caution: Don't force the cartridge cover closed. If it doesn't close easily, open it and make sure all the ink cartridges are firmly seated. 7 Lower the scanner unit. The RX500 begins charging the ink delivery system. Charging takes about 2 minutes. Initial charge appears on the RX500 screen. Note: Don't turn the RX500 off while you see the Initial Charge message or you'll waste ink. 7 Load Paper 1 Insert the paper support into the two slots on the back of the RX500. 2 Connect the short cable leading from the scanner lid to the round connector on the back of the RX500. Position the connector as shown here before pushing it in. Don't force it. 3 Open the output tray. 4 Flip the feeder guard forward. 5 Place a stack of paper in the top of the RX500, between the edge guides and beneath their tabs. Then slide the left edge guide against the paper, but not too tightly. 6 Flip the feeder guard back over the stack of paper. Note: If you forget to flip the feeder guard back, your paper may jam. 8 Install Software and Connect to Your Computer The software works with Windows® 98, Me, 2000, and XP, and Macintosh® OS 8.6 to 9.x and OS X 10.2 to 10.3. Windows 1 Make sure the RX500 is not connected to your computer, then turn on your computer. Note: If your RX500 is turned on and connected, you may see several New Hardware screens. Click Cancel for each one and disconnect the RX500. You can't install your software that way. 2 Insert the Epson CD-ROM in your CD-ROM or DVD drive. Note: With Windows XP, if you see a message asking what you want Windows to do, click Cancel. 3 When you see this screen, click Install. If this screen doesn't open automatically, double-click My Computer (or click Start > My Computer). Then double-click the EPSON CD-ROM icon. 4 Read the license agreement and click Agree to continue. The computer installer copies files to your computer. When you see this screen, make sure the RX500 is turned on, then lift up the scanner. 5 6 Remove the yellow sticker and plug the square end of a USB cable into the USB port on the RX500. Then route the cable in the slot as shown. Caution: Make sure the USB cable fits securely into the slot. The USB connector may snap if the cable is not routed correctly and the scanner is closed with force. 7 8 Close the scanner carefully. Plug the flat end of the cable into any available USB port on your computer. Several messages appear on the screen. Wait for all the screens to disappear. Note: If the blue USB screen doesn't disappear, make sure the RX500 is turned on and securely connected to your computer. continue 9 10 When you see a message that you have successfully installed the RX500 drivers, click Next. Continue following the instructions on the screen to install the rest of your software. Note: Installation may take several minutes. Don't cancel the installation or start other programs. 11 12 13 When installation is finished, click Print Test Page to make sure your software is installed correctly. After the test page prints, click Exit. Register your RX500 as instructed, then remove the CD-ROM. Now you're ready to copy, scan, and print. See "Any Questions?" to the right to find out how. Macintosh 1 2 Insert the Epson CD-ROM in your CD-ROM or DVD drive. Mac® OS X: Double-click the EPSON CD-ROM icon, then double-click the EPSON OS X Installer icon. Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x: Double-click the Installer icon. EPSON OS 8 and 9 3 4 5 When you see this screen, click Install. Read the license agreement and click Agree to continue. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the software. You may need to enter your administrator password. Note: Installation may take several minutes. Don't cancel the installation or start other programs. 6 7 When prompted, restart your Macintosh. Then double-click your EPSON CD-ROM icon, if necessary, and double-click your installer icon to continue with installation. When you see this screen, click Install to finish installing your software. Note: Installation may take several minutes. Don't cancel the installation or start other programs. 8 9 10 11 At the end of installation, click Exit. Register your RX500 as instructed, then remove the CD-ROM. Make sure the RX500 is turned on, then lift up the scanner. Plug the flat end of the cable into any available USB port on your Macintosh. continue Selecting the RX500 in Mac OS X 1 Open the OS X Applications folder, then open the Utilities folder and start Print Center or the Printer Setup Utility. Note: If you see a screen asking if you'd like to add a printer, click Add. 2 3 On the next screen, select EPSON USB from the pull-down menu. Click Stylus Photo RX500. Note: If the RX500 doesn't appear, make sure it is turned on and securely connected to your Macintosh. 4 5 6 7 Open the Page Setup menu at the bottom of the screen and select All. Click the Add button. The Printer List includes two entries for your printer. Close Print Center or the Printer Setup Utility. Now start up your Macintosh in OS 9.x. Follow the instructions in the previous column to install the OS 9.x drivers and optional software for Macintosh Classic programs. Selecting the RX500 in Mac OS 8.6 to 9.x 1 2 3 Open the Chooser from the Apple menu. Select the SP RX500 Series icon, then select your USB port and turn on background printing. Close the Chooser. Now you're ready to copy, scan, and print. See "Any Questions?" to the right to find out how. Any Problems? If the red ! error light is on, check the messages on the RX500 LCD screen. They give you guidance for solving problems. If your problem is listed here, try these suggestions. For more information, see your software Help, User's Guide, or your on-screen Reference Guide. A New Hardware Wizard appears on your screen. Click Cancel and follow the steps in section 8. Disconnect the RX500 before installing the software. Make sure your RX500 is connected to your computer, plugged into a power source, and turned on. Try turning the printer off and then back on to clear the error. The RX500 doesn't work. Unlock the printer by removing and storing the orange plastic print head holder. See section 4. Slide the transportation lock under the lid to unlock the scanner. See section 2. Make sure the ink cartridges are pushed all the way down. See section 6. Try connecting the USB cable to a different USB port on your computer. See section 8.
