DCP-7020 Before you can use the machine, you must set up the hardware and install the software. Please read this "Quick Setup Guide" for the correct setup procedure and installation instructions. USB interface cable Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters). Do not connect the USB cable to a non-powered hub or a Mac® keyboard. When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB port on a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub. Parallel interface cable Please make sure you use a Parallel interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters). Use a shielded interface cable that is IEEE 1284-compliant. Install the Drum Unit 1 Assembly Do NOT connect the interface cable. Connecting the interface cable is done when installing the driver. 1 Open the front cover of the machine. 5 Close the front cover of the machine. Front Cover 2 Unpack the drum unit assembly. 3 Gently rock it from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the assembly. 4 1 Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine. Put paper in the paper tray. Check that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark. 2 While pressing the paper guide release lever, slide the adjusters to fit the paper size. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots. Maximum paper mark For Legal size paper, press in the inside latches and pull out the back of the paper tray. 5 Put the paper tray firmly back in to the machine and unfold the output tray support flap before you use the machine. MFL-Pro Suite includes Printer Driver, Scanner Driver, ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE, ScanSoft® OmniPage® and True Type® fonts. PaperPort ® 9.0SE is a document management application for viewing scanned documents. ScanSoft ® OmniPage®, which is integrated into PaperPort ® 9.0SE, is an OCR application that converts an image into text and inserts it into your default word processor. Repair MFL-Pro Suite If you experience errors while installing the MFL-Pro Suite, you can use this function to automatically repair and re-install the software. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected an interface cable. 6 7 The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. 2 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your machine. If the language screen appears, select your language. 3 4 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. 8 Select Local Connection, and then click Next. The installation will continue. If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. 10 9 When this screen appears, connect the USB interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. (For Windows® XP) 0 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. Windows® USB (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000) DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. A When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. Brother recommends that you connect the machine directly to your computer. DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a nonpowered USB hub. Continued ... 11 Installing the Drivers & Software It will take a few seconds for the installation screen to appear. The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The screens appear one after another, please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear. Setting Up the Machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For USB Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) B Click Finish to restart your computer. (After restarting the computer, for Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) If the installation is unsuccessful, try installing again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the CD-ROM main menu. Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen. The MFL-Pro Suite, Brother Printer Driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. 12 Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 6. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. Windows® USB 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected an interface cable. 6 7 The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. Installing the Drivers & Software 13 2 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your machine. If the language screen appears, select your language. 3 4 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. 8 Select Local Connection, and then click Next. The installation will continue. If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. Continued ... Windows® Parallel Setting Up the Machine For Parallel Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For Parallel Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP) 9 When this screen appears, connect the parallel interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. (For Windows® XP) 0 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000) A For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional users, click Next. DO NOT plug in the power cord before connecting the parallel interface cable. It may cause damage to your machine. For Windows® XP users, wait for a while since the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The screens appear one after another. DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. B When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. Brother recommends that you connect the machine directly to your computer. 14 C When the following screen appears, click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows® and continues the installation. D E For Windows® 2000 Professional users, if the Digital Signature Not Found dialog boxes appear, click Yes to install the driver. If the installation is unsuccessful, try installing again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the CD-ROM main menu. Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen. The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. 15 Installing the Drivers & Software After the computer restarts, the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. Follow the instructions on the screen. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Windows® Parallel Setting Up the Machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For Windows NT® Workstation Version 4.0 Users Make sure that you followed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 6. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 4 1 Turn on your computer. You must be logged on with Administrator rights. DO NOT plug in the power cord before connecting the parallel interface cable. It may cause damage to your machine. Insert the Supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your machine. If the language screen appears, select your language. 5 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. 2 Connect the parallel interface cable to your computer, and then connect it to the machine. If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. 6 Brother recommends that you connect the machine directly to your computer. After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. 3 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. 7 The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. 16 8 When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. A When the following screen appears, click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows and continues the installation. (You must be logged on with Administrator rights.) 9 Installing the Drivers & Software 17 Select Local Connection, and then click Next. The installation will continue. The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. 0 When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. Windows NT® 4.0 Parallel If the installation is unsuccessful, try installing again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the CD-ROM main menu. Select Repair MFL-Pro Suite and follow the instructions on the screen. Setting Up the Machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For Optional NC-2200w Users (For External Wireless Print/Scan Server Users) Make sure that you followed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 6. 1 2 Before installation, read the Quick Setup Guide for NC-2200w External Wireless Print/Scan Server and follow the instruction. If you are using Personal Firewall software, disable it. Once you are sure that you can print, re-start your Personal Firewall software. Close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. 6 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. 3 If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root directory of the Brother CD-ROM. 7 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click Yes. 4 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, select your machine. If the language screen appears, select your language. 5 8 9 The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. 18 0 Select Network Connection and then click Next. C When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. A DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. The MFL-Pro Suite, Network Printer driver, Network Scanner driver have been installed and the installation is now complete. This window will not appear if there is only one of this Brother model connected on the network, it will be selected automatically. For Network installations, the Repair MFL-Pro Suite selection from the main menu is not supported. Network Scanning is not supported in Windows NT® 4.0. If the machine is not yet configured for use on your network, the Configure IP Address window will appear. Enter the IP address information appropriate to your network by following the on-screen instructions. 19 Windows® Optional Wireless Network B If the machine is configured for your network, select your machine from the list and then click Next. Installing the Drivers & Software The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear. D When the following screen appears, click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows and continues the installation. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Setting Up the Machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For USB Interface Cable Users For Mac OS® 9.1 to 9.2 Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 6. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your Macintosh®, if you already connected an interface cable. 5 Click MFL-Pro Suite to install. 6 2 3 Turn on your Macintosh®. Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh® into your CD-ROM drive. Follow the on-screen instructions, and restart your Macintosh®. Connect the USB interface cable to your Macintosh®, and then connect it to the machine. 7 4 Double-click the Start Here OS 9.1-9.2 icon to install the printer and scanner drivers. If the language screen appears, select your language. DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a non powered USB hub. 8 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. 20 9 From the Apple® menu, open the Chooser. A To install Presto!® PageManager®, click the Presto! PageManager icon and follow the on-screen instructions. 0 Click the Brother Laser icon. On the right side of the Chooser, select the machine to which you want to print. Close the Chooser. You can easily scan, share and organize photos and documents using Presto!® PageManager®. Installing the Drivers & Software Macintosh® Presto!® PageManager® has been installed and the installation is now complete. The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and Scanner driver have been installed. The ControlCenter2.0 is not supported in Mac OS® 9.1 to 9.2. 21 USB Setting Up the Machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For USB Interface Cable Users For Mac OS® X 10.2.4 or greater Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 6. For Mac OS® X 10.2.0 to 10.2.3 user, please upgrade to Mac OS® X 10.2.4 or greater. (The latest information for Mac OS® X, please visit at: http://solutions.brother.com) 5 Click MFL-Pro Suite to install. 1 Disconnect the machine from the power socket and from your Macintosh®, if you already connected an interface cable. 6 7 Follow the on-screen instructions, and restart your Macintosh®. After the DeviceSelector window appears, connect the USB interface cable to your Macintosh® and then to the machine. 2 3 Turn on your Macintosh®. Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh® into your CD-ROM drive. 4 Double-click the Start Here OSX icon to install the printer driver, Scanner driver and Remote Setup program. If the language screen appears, select your language. The DeviceSelector window will not appear if you have also connected a USB interface cable to the machine before restarting your Macintosh®or if you are overwriting a previously installed version of the Brother software. If you encounter this problem continue with the installation skipping step 9 and then see the Software User's Guide for details on selecting which machine the ControlCenter2.0 will connect with. 22 A Open the Utilities folder. DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a nonpowered USB hub. B Open the Printer Setup Utility icon. 8 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. For Mac OS® X 10.2.x users, open Print Center icon. 9 C Select USB and then click OK. Click Add. Installing the Drivers & Software Macintosh® D 0 Select Applications from the Go menu. Select USB. Continued ... 23 USB Setting Up the Machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For USB Interface Cable Users E Select DCP-XXXX (XXXX is your model name), and then click Add. G To install Presto!® PageManager®, click the Presto! PageManager icon and follow the on-screen instructions. F Select Quit Printer Setup Utility from the Printer Setup Utility menu. When Presto! ® PageManager® is installed OCR capability is added to the Brother ControlCenter2.0. You can also easily scan, share, and organize photos and documents using Presto!® PageManager®. Presto!® PageManager® has been installed and the installation is now complete. The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver, Scanner driver and ControlCenter2.0 have been installed. 24 For Mac OS® X 10.2.4 or greater Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the Machine" on pages 4 - 6. 1 2 3 Before installation, read the Quick Setup Guide for NC-2200w External Wireless Print/Scan Server and follow the instruction. Turn on your Macintosh®. Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh® into your CD-ROM drive. 7
