Make sure that the AC socket will accept this grounded three pin plug. This machine must be grounded, If in doubt, call a qualified electrician. Philipine & Thailand users: The mains plug supplied with this machine is a side grounded two pin plug. Make sure that the AC socket will accept this side grounded two pin plug. This machine must be grounded, If in doubt, call a qualified electrician. To ensure safe operation the supplied plug must be inserted only into a standard power outlet that is properly grounded through the standard electrical wiring. None grounded equipment may cause an electrical shock hazard, and may cause excessive electrical noise radiation. The interface cable is not a standard accessory. Please purchase the appropriate interface cable for the interface you intend to use (Parallel, USB or Network). Do NOT connect the interface cable at this time. Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process. USB interface cable Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 interface cable that is no longer than 2.0 meters. When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB port on a keyboard or non-powered USB hub. Parallel interface cable Please make sure you use a Parallel interface cable that is no longer than 2.0 meters. Use a shielded interface cable that is IEEE 1284-compliant. Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process. 3 1 Open the front cover by pressing the front cover release button (1). Gently rock it from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. (1) 4 Put the drum unit and toner cartridge into the machine so that it clicks into place. 5 Close the front cover of the machine. 4 2 Load Paper in the Paper Tray 1 Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine. 4 Put paper in the paper tray. Check that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark (1). (1) Windows® Parallel 2 While pressing the blue paper guide release lever (1), slide the adjusters to fit the paper size. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots. 5 (1) Put the paper tray firmly back into the machine and unfold the support flap (1) before you use the machine. (1) 3 5 Network Administrators Macintosh® Network Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. For details on supported paper specifications, see "Acceptable paper and other media" in Chapter 2 of the User's Guide. Macintosh® USB Windows® Network Windows NT® 4.0 Parallel Windows® USB Setting Up the machine Step 1 3 1 Setting Up the machine Release the Scanner Lock 4 Connect the Power Cord Do not connect the Parallel or USB cable yet. Push the lever (1) in the direction shown to unlock the scanner. (The gray scanner lock lever is located at the back left side, under the document cover (2).) (2) 1 Make sure that the power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the machine. (1) 2 Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet. Turn the power switch on. If Scanner Locked appears on the LCD, immediately release the scanner lock and press Stop/Exit. (See "Release the Scanner Lock" on page 6.) 6 5 Setting the LCD Contrast You can change the contrast to help the LCD look lighter or darker. Setting Up the machine Press to increase the contrast. --OR-- Press to decrease the contrast. Press OK. Install Optional Applications You can install additional MFL-Pro Suite software utilities. Documentation View the User's Guide and other documents in PDF format (Viewer included). The User's Guide on the CD-ROM includes the Software and Network User's Guide for features available when connected to a computer (e.g. printing, scanning and networking details). . Repair MFL-Pro Suite (For USB and Parallel cable users only) If you experience errors while installing the MFL-Pro Suite, you can use this function to automatically repair and re-install the software. MFL-Pro Suite includes Printer Driver, Scanner Driver, Brother ControlCenter2, ScanSoft® PaperPort® SE with OCR and True Type® fonts. PaperPort ® SE is a document management application for viewing scanned documents. Start Here OSX You can install the MFL-Pro Suite that includes the printer driver, scanner driver and the Brother ControlCenter2 for Mac OS® 10.2.4 or greater. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® SE License Agreement, click Yes. 1 Switch off the machine and disconnect the machine from the power socket (and from your computer, if you have already connected an interface cable). The installation of PaperPort® SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. 6 2 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ XP Professional x64 Edition, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Put the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, choose your machine. If the language screen appears, choose your language. When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, click Yes if you agree to the Software License Agreement. 3 7 4 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. Choose Standard (DCP-8060) or Local Connection (DCP-8065DN), and then click Next. The installation continues. (DCP-8060) If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root folder of the Brother CD-ROM. (DCP-8065DN) If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Script 3 printer driver), choose Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. 10 8 When this screen appears, connect the USB interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. (For Windows® XP) DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. 0 (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000) When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. A Click Finish to restart your computer. (After restarting the computer, for Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ XP Professional x64 Edition, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a nonpowered USB hub. Brother recommends that you connect the machine directly to your computer. 9 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. After restarting the computer, the Installation Diagnostics will run automatically. If the installation is unsuccessful, the installation results window will be shown. If the Installation Diagnostics shows a failure, please follow the on-screen instruction or read on-line help and FAQs in Start/All Programs (Programs)/Brother/ MFL-Pro Suite DCP-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name). Installing the Drivers & Software 11 Network Administrators The MFL-Pro Suite (including printer driver and scanner driver) has been installed and the installation is now complete. Windows® USB It will take a few seconds for the installation screens to appear. The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear. Setting Up the machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For Parallel Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition) Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the machine" on pages 4 - 7. Please close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. 5 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® SE License Agreement, click Yes. 1 Switch off the machine and disconnect the machine from the power socket (and from your computer, if you have already connected an interface cable). The installation of PaperPort® SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. 6 2 Turn on your computer. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. Choose Standard (DCP-8060) or Local Connection (DCP-8065DN), and then click Next. The installation continues. (DCP-8060) If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root folder of the Brother CD-ROM. (DCP-8065DN) If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Script 3 printer driver), choose Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. 12 8 When this screen appears, connect the parallel interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. (For Windows® XP) 0 For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/ 2000 Professional users, click Next. (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000) DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. A When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. DO NOT plug in the power cord before connecting the parallel interface cable. It may cause damage to your machine. Brother recommends that you connect the machine directly to your computer. B When the following screen appears, click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows® and continues the installation. 9 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. Installing the Drivers & Software 13 Network Administrators Continued... Windows® Parallel Windows® XP users should wait for a while; installation of the Brother drivers will start automatically. The installation screens appear one after another. Setting Up the machine Step 2 C Installing the Drivers & Software For Parallel Interface Cable Users (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition) After the computer restarts, the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. Follow the instructions on the screen. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ XP Professional x64 Edition, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) After restarting the computer, the Installation Diagnostics will run automatically. If the installation is unsuccessful, the installation results window will be shown. If the Installation Diagnostics shows a failure, please follow the on-screen instruction or read on-line help and FAQs in Start/All Programs (Programs)/Brother/ MFL-Pro Suite DCP-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name). The MFL-Pro Suite (including printer driver and scanner driver) has been installed and the installation is now complete. 14 For Windows NT® Workstation Version 4.0 Users Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the machine" on pages 4 - 7. Network Administrators Windows NT® 4.0 Parallel 3 Connect the parallel interface cable to your computer, and then connect it to the machine. Step 2 8 Installing the Drivers & Software For Windows NT® Workstation Version 4.0 Users When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, click Yes if you agree to the Software License Agreement. A Click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows® and continues the installation. (You must be logged on with Administrator rights.) 9 Choose Standard (DCP-8060) or Local Connection (DCP-8065DN), and then click Next. The installation continues. After restarting the computer, the Installation Diagnostics will run automatically. If the installation is unsuccessful, the installation results window will be shown. If the Installation Diagnostics shows a failure, please follow the on-screen instruction or read on-line help and FAQs in Start/Programs/ Brother/MFL-Pro Suite DCP-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name). (DCP-8060) (DCP-8065DN) If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Script 3 printer driver), choose Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. The MFL-Pro Suite (including printer driver and scanner driver) has been installed and the installation is now complete. 0 When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. 16 For Network Interface Cable Users (DCP-8065DN only) Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the machine" on pages 4 - 7. Setting Up the machine (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/NT/2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition) 1 2 Switch off and disconnect the machine from the power socket. Connect the network cable to the machine, and then connect it to a free port on your hub. 5 Put the supplied CD-ROM for Windows® into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name screen appears, choose your machine. If the language screen appears, select your language. 6 The CD-ROM main menu will appear. Click Install MFL-Pro Suite. 3 Installing the Drivers & Software 17 If this window does not appear, use Windows® Explorer to run the setup.exe program from the root folder of the Brother CD-ROM. 4 Turn on your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ XP Professional x64 Edition/ Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) Close any applications running before installing the MFL-Pro Suite. Before installation, if you are using Personal Firewall software, disable it. Once you are sure that you can print after the installation, re-start your Personal Firewall software. The installation of PaperPort® SE will automatically start and is followed by the installation of MFL-Pro Suite. Continued... Network Administrators Windows® Network 7 After reading and accepting the ScanSoft® PaperPort® SE License Agreement, click Yes. Windows NT® 4.0 Parallel Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. Step 2 8 Installing the Drivers & Software For Network Interface Cable Users (DCP-8065DN only) (For Windows® 98/98SE/Me/NT/2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition) When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, read the agreement, then click Yes if you agree to its terms. A If the machine is configured for your network, select your machine from the list and then click Next. 9 Choose Network Connection and then click Next. This window will not appear if there is only one of this Brother model connected on the network, it will be selected automatically. B If the machine is not yet configured for use on your network, the following screen appears. If you want to install the PS driver (Brother's BR-Script Driver), choose Custom Install and then follow the on-screen instructions. When the Select Components screen appears, check PS Printer Driver, and then continue following the on-screen instructions. Click OK. The Configure IP Address window will appear. Enter the IP address information appropriate to your network by following the on-screen instructions. 0 C The installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The installation screens appear one after another. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear. DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation. When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follow the on-screen instructions. 18 D Click Finish to restart your computer. (For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/ XP Professional x64 Edition/ Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on with Administrator rights.) The MFL-Pro Suite (including network printer driver and network scanner driver) has been installed and the installation is now complete. After restarting the computer, the Installation Diagnostics will run automatically. If the installation is unsuccessful, the installation results window will be shown. If the Installation Diagnostics shows a failure, please follow the on-screen instruction or read on-line help and FAQs in Start/All Programs (Programs)/Brother/ MFL-Pro Suite DCP-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name). For network installations, the Repair MFL-Pro Suite selection from the main menu is not supported. Network Scanning, Network Remote Setup, Network PC-FAX Receiving are not supported in Windows NT® 4.0. For configuration of advanced network functions such as LDAP and Scan to FTP, see the Software and Network Users Guides located on the CD-ROM. Installing the Drivers & Software 19 Network Administrators Windows® Network Setting Up the machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For USB Interface Cable Users For Mac OS® 9.1 to 9.2 Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the machine" on pages 4 - 7. 1 Switch off the machine and disconnect the machine from the power socket (and from the Macintosh®, if you have already connected an interface cable). 6 7 Follow the on-screen instructions, and restart your Macintosh®. Connect the USB interface cable to your Macintosh®, and then connect it to the machine. 2 3 Turn on your Macintosh®. Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh® into your CD-ROM drive. DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a nonpowered USB hub. 4 Double-click the Start Here OS 9.1-9.2 icon to install the printer and scanner drivers. If the language screen appears, choose your language. 8 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. 5 Click MFL-Pro Suite to install. 9 From the Apple® menu, click Chooser. 20 0 Click the Brother Laser icon. On the right side of the Chooser, choose the machine to which you want to print. Close the Chooser. The MFL-Pro Suite, printer driver and scanner driver have been installed. ControlCenter2 is not supported in Mac OS® 9.1 to 9.2. Installing the Drivers & Software Macintosh® A To install Presto!® PageManager®, click the Presto! PageManager icon and follow the on-screen instructions. You can easily scan, share and organize photos and documents using Presto!® PageManager®. Presto!® PageManager® has been installed and the installation is now complete. 21 Network Administrators USB Setting Up the machine Step 2 Installing the Drivers & Software For USB Interface Cable Users For Mac OS® X 10.2.4 or greater Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 "Setting Up the machine" on pages 4 - 7. For Mac OS® X 10.2.0 to 10.2.3 users, upgrade to Mac OS® X 10.2.4 or greater. (For the latest information for Mac OS® X, visit http://solutions.brother.com) 5 Click MFL-Pro Suite to install. 1 Switch off the machine and disconnect the machine from the power socket (and from the Macintosh®, if you have already connected an interface cable). 6 7 Follow the on-screen instructions, and restart your Macintosh®. After the DeviceSelector window appears, connect the USB interface cable to your Macintosh® and then to the machine. 2 3 Turn on your Macintosh®. Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh® into your CD-ROM drive. The DeviceSelector window will not appear if you have also connected a USB interface cable to the machine before restarting your Macintosh® or if you are overwriting a previously installed version of the Brother software. If you encounter this problem continue with the installation but skip step 9. You should choose your Brother machine from the Model pull-down list in the main screen of ControlCenter2. (For details, see the Software User's Guide on the CD-ROM). 4 Double-click the Start Here OSX icon to install the drivers and MFL-Pro Suite.
