Before you start With the Sony Ericsson Remote Update Service you can remotely update your mobile phone to the latest available software version. This is done via the mobile network, no computer connection is needed. To be able to access the Remote Update Service with your phone, you need: · · · · · · · · A phone subscription that has data transmission. Data account settings for access to an Internet server. An Internet profile with settings for Web browsing. Enough memory free for download (1­5 MB). Battery charged (over 50%). Enough network coverage (recommended). Enough bandwidth in a network (generally phone calls have higher priority then data traffic). An operator network without proxy limitation for data traffic larger than 1 MB. Your phone may already have Internet profile and data account settings when you buy it. If your phone does not have the Internet profile and data account settings you will receive an automatic text message with the required settings or you can receive and enter them yourself. You may also have to register as an Internet user with your network operator or service provider. 2 September 2007 Getting started Remote Update Service Internet settings You can receive or enter Internet profile and data account settings in four ways: · · · · By using the Sony Ericsson Phone setup for Internet (if supported by your service provider) By receiving them from your service provider By downloading them from your Setup wizard (if supported by your service provider) By accepting to download the settings when you receive a text message to do so To receive settings using the Phone setup for Internet 1. In your computer Web browser, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support. 2. Select a region and country. 3. Select Phone setup. 4. Select your phone model from the list. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. You will receive the settings in a text message. 6. When you receive the text message, select Yes and follow the instructions. You are now ready to start using the Internet with your mobile phone. To receive settings from your service provider 1. Check your service provider's Web site for information or contact their support desk and ask about automatic remote configuration of Internet. 2. If remote configuration is possible, your service provider will send the settings in a text message. 3. When you receive the text message, select Yes and follow the instructions. You are now ready to start using the Internet with your mobile phone. To download settings from the Setup wizard 1. From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Setup wizard > Settings download. The available settings are downloaded and you are now ready to start using the Internet with your mobile phone. Your service provider may not support this procedure. To download settings when receiving a download text message · When you receive a text message to download settings, select Yes. The available settings are downloaded and you are now ready to start using the Internet with your mobile phone. Using the Remote Update Service The Remote Update Service consists of three parts ­ search, download and update. · Search ­ the phone searches for a new software version to update to. · Download ­ the new version is sent to your phone. Estimated download time is 2­15 minutes due to network conditions and content in the download file. · Update ­ your phone is updated to the latest version. Estimated update time is 10­20 minutes. 3 September 2007 Getting started Remote Update Service To check the current software version 1. From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Update service > Software version. The current software version appears. 2. Select OK. Your network operator may not support the Remote Update Service. Searching for a new software version Depending on which phone and operator you are using, the search for a new software version is initiated manually or automatically (triggered by your operator). To make sure you always have the latest software version, you can also set a search reminder. To initiate a manual search for a new software version 1. From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Update service > Search for update > Yes. Your phone searches for the latest software version. 2. If you already have the latest software, select OK. If new software is found, continue with the download. See To download and update new software on page 5. To initiate an automatic search for a new software version 1. When your phone is requesting a search, select Yes to continue. Your phone searches for the latest software version. 2. If you already have the latest software, select OK. If new software is found, continue with the download. See To download and update new software on page 5. To initiate a search receiving a notification from your service provider 1. When you receive a notification (text message) from your service provider, select Yes to continue. Your phone searches for the latest software version. 2. When the new software is found, continue with the download. See To download and update new software on page 5. If you select No when your phone requests a search, you will be reminded to initiate a search the next time you turn on your phone. To set a search reminder 1. From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Update service > Reminder. 2. Set the reminder interval and select OK. Downloading and updating new software During the download and update process the latest software version is installed in your phone. The set-up for the two processes differ. Download process The following is valid for the download process: · During calls, the download is suspended for non-3G phones (2.5G). You will be reminded to resume the download later. For 3G phones the download continues in the background during calls. · Calendar and games cannot be used during a download. · Data transmission charges may apply. Your operator can provide you with pricing information. 4 September 2007 Getting started Remote Update Service · It is not recommended to do an update when travelling. Due to network variants and risk for lost coverage it is recommended to stay in the same place. · If your phone comes out of network coverage, the download can resume when the mobile is back in the network, but the download has to be resumed manually. · If there is not enough memory available for the download, you must manually delete some content to free up memory for the download. If there is not enough memory, you will receive a question to delete content. · Estimated download time is 2­15 minutes depending on the network. Update process The following is valid for the update process: · Your phone is unavailable during the update process. You cannot use your phone, not even for emergency calls. When the update process is completed your mobile phone will be turned on automatically. · User data will not be deleted, for example, contacts, settings, music, pictures and videos. · The update does not require network coverage. · The update is free of charge. · Estimated update time is 10­20 minutes depending on content. To download and update new software (To find a new software version. See Searching for a new software version on page 4). 1. When the new software is found, select Yes to download. Your phone downloads the latest software version. 2. When the new software is downloaded, select Yes to update your phone. The latest software version is installed in your phone. 3. If you get a confirmation message, select Continue to finish the update. If you select No when your phone requests a download or an update, you will be reminded to do it the next time you turn on your phone. What is updated in my phone? All software contained in your phone can be updated. This includes: · Communication stacks (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, BluetoothTM functionality and so on). · Multimedia drivers and codec. · Applications (media player, messaging and so on). User data and operator customized applications such as games are not updated. 5 September 2007 Getting started Remote Update Service Troubleshooting You can correct most problems yourself. If you cannot solve a problem, contact your network operator or go to www.sonyericsson.com/support. To solve communication problems Go through the following list to find a solution to your problem: · Check the Internet profile or install the Internet settings again. To install the Internet settings, see Internet settings on page 3. · Wait for better coverage and connect to the network again. · Restart the Remote Update Service. See Using the Remote Update Service on page 3. · Charge the battery. The battery needs a capacity over 50%. · Delete some content to free memory. The download requires 1­5 MB. · Check the current software version. If you already have the latest software version, no update is available. See To check the current software version on page 4. · Resume the download. Select Yes when you get a question to resume the download. This usually occurs when your operator has limited the amount of data that may be transferred in the network. You may exceed that limit when downloading the update. · If there is a problem with the automatic restart after an update, remove and insert the battery then restart the phone. · Check if your operators offer the Remote Update Service.
