RioVolt User Preference Guide RioVolt Firmware 2.1x Welcome the to the RioVolt Firmware 2.1x User Guide. The 2.1x firmware has many new user configurable features and a new layout for accessing those features. This guide is designed to help you understand the features now available to you and to show you how to customize the player to your preferences. This guide only deals with the User Preferences. The 2.1x firmware is an update to the 2.01 firmware version. If you are uncomfortable with the new layout, you may flash back to the 1.13 version, which is posted in the support center at http://www.riohome.com. This will reset your preference options to those listed in the original manual. ** NEW FEATURES: New User Preferences (see Part 1) Supports Winamp .M3U playlists (see Part 3) 10 Disk Resume: Will resume play on the last track accessed on the 10 previous CDs. This guide is divided into three parts. · Overall layout of the User Preferences and a description of the available features. · Navigating the preferences and examples of configurations used by the technicians at SONIC|blue. · Creating and using playlists. Conventions used: Short press = press and release the button. Long Press = press and hold the button. Part 1 User Preferences Layout Below is the layout of the User Preferences. Each option is described in more detail after the chart: General Beep Sound: Off, Vol 1, 2, 3, 4 Resume: Off, On MP3 Buffer: 30 Seconds, 60 Sec Volume Step: 20, 40 Language: Korea, Japan, EU&US Volume Fade In: On, Off Load Defaults: No, Yes Display Adapter Light: Off, On Scroll Speed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 , 11, 12 File Ext: Off, On Tag Info: Off, On Time Info: Normal, Remain Timer Sleep Timer: Off, 10 Minutes, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 Stop Power: 30 Seconds, 10 Minutes, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 Control FF/RW Scan: Off, On FF/RW Skip: Off, +10/-10, Directory FF/RW Speed: 1X, 2X, 4X, 6X EQ Button: EQ, Prog, Mode, Navi Auto Pause: Off, On Mode Repeat: 1 Off, 1 On Repeat: Dir Off, Dir On Repeat: Dir All Off, Dir All On Repeat: All Off, All On Shuffle: Off, On Shuffle: 1 Off, 1 On Shuffle: Dir Off, Dir On Shuffle: Dir All Off, Dir All On Shuffle: All Off, All On Intro: Off, On, Highlight On User Def EQ Bass: Boost: 0 DB, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 Bass Freq: Level 1, 2, 3 Treble: Boost: 0 DB, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 Treble Freq: Level 1, 2, 3 Setting definitions General: Beep Sound: Whenever a button is pressed on the RioVolt, an audible signal can be played to alert you that something has happened. This can be useful if you are using the remote control and cannot see the LCD screen. You have the ability to disable this feature or select the volume of the beep. Resume: With this feature enabled, if you stop the player or power it off, the last used play mode and play position will be retained. For example: If you stopped the player in the middle of track 3 with Shuffle enabled, when you press Play, it will pick up in the middle of the track and keep the Shuffle enabled. Settings are retained even if the unit is powered off. With Resume disabled, every time you stop playing, the mode and track position reset. MP3 Buffer: This controls the anti-shock buffer for MP3/WMA tracks. By buffering part of the track into the memory, if the unit is moved in such a way that the reading eye cannot access the CD, the track will not skip. This setting does not affect regular audio CDs; they use the ESP switch on the bottom of the RioVolt. The 30 Second option will buffer 30 seconds of the current and next track into the RioVolt's memory, and is the recommended setting for the player. The 60 Second option will buffer one minute of the current and next track, and this setting should be used if the 30 Second option still skips when the player is in motion ­ such as walking with it, bike riding, etc. Note: The 60 Second option will consume more battery power than the 30 Second option. Volume Step: This feature does not alter the overall volume output (gain) of the player. It lets you set the increments between the lowest and highest settings for more delicate control. If the Volume Step is set to 40, then each press of the Volume will increase or decrease the sound output ½ as much as the 20 setting. Language: This feature allows you to select between Korean, Japanese (Katagana), and European/US character displays for your track information. Kanji text is not supported. Volume Fade In: With this set to On, when the RioVolt uses the Resume feature, the volume of the track will fade up to full volume instead of just starting at the full volume after being stopped or switching CDs. Load Defaults: When Yes is selected, all of the User Preferences are set back to the default/initial settings. Display: Adapter Light: This setting controls the LCD backlight when the RioVolt is connected to the AC Power Adapter. If this option is set to On, the backlight will remain on as long as the unit is turned on. With this option set to Off, the backlight will behave as if battery power is being used, and it will go dark about 12 seconds after the last button on the player is pressed. Scroll Speed: You can now choose how fast the track information scrolls across the screen. File Ext: When this option is set to On, the display shows the file extension for tracks (MP3, WMA, CD, or ASF). When this option is Off, the file extensions do not display. Tag Info: This setting controls the display of the ID3 tags for your MP3 tracks, if the track has an ID3 tag. When set to On, the ID3 information will be displayed. When set to Off, the ID3 tag information will not display. Note: If this option is turned Off during play, the ID3 tag information of previously played and buffered tracks may still show. Time Info: The Normal setting displays the elapsed time of the track ­ it counts up from 0. Setting this option to Remaining shows how much time is left in the track ­ counting down to 0. Timer: Sleep Timer: This option allows the player to power off automatically after a specific amount of time. You may have this option Off, or set in 10 minute increments, up to 90 minutes (1 1/2 hours). Stop Power Off: After the unit is set to STOP, this feature controls how long the player remains inactive before turning itself off. When using battery power, a higher setting will shorten the life of the batteries due to the inactive unit still drawing power. Control: FF/RW Scan: ON - This feature will allow you to Fast Forward or Rewind through the current track. Holding down the right button (Fast Forward) on the Joypad will scan forward through the track. Pressing and holding the left button on the Joypad (Rewind) will scan backwards through the track. OFF - Instead of scanning through the current track, it scans through the track list. . Holding down the right button (Fast Forward) on the Joypad will scan forward through the playlist. Pressing and holding the left button on the Joypad (Rewind) will scan backwards through the playlist. Note: When this option is On, scanning through an MP3 or WMA track will not sound as smooth as scanning through a CD Audio track. Due to the nature of VBR (Variable Bit Rate) encoded MP3 files, scanning through the track may not function properly. RW/FW Skip: +10/-10- When this option is enabled, a short press, followed by a long press of the right button on the Joypad (Fast Forward) will move you ahead 10 tracks in your playlist. A short press, followed by a long press of the left button on the Joypad (Reverse) will move you back 10 tracks in your playlist. Directory - A short press, followed by a long press of the right button on the Joypad (Fast Forward) will move you to the next directory. A short press, followed by a long press of the left button on the Joypad (Rewind) will move you to the previous directory. Off - A short press, followed by a long press on either Joypad button will have no affect. FF/RW Speed: When the FF/RW Scan option is set to On, this setting allows you to control the speed at which the unit scans through the track. 1X is the slowest, 6X is the fastest. EQ Button: This feature allows you to reassign the function of a short press of the EQ button. You may assign the EQ button to perform the function of the Program, Mode, Navigation, or EQ button. This feature comes in handy when using the remote, since you may now use the EQ button on the remote to act as any of the available functions through this option. Auto Pause: When set to Yes, this will make the player pause between each track to display the track information. Mode: All of the settings in this feature set affect which options are available when pressing the Mode button on the RioVolt. If an option is set to Off, it will not be available when pressing the Mode button on the player. For example, if you only use the Shuffle All mode, then turning Off all of the other options tell the RioVolt to only offer Shuffle All when pressing the Mode button on the player. Repeat 1: This setting will continually repeat a single track. Repeat Dir: This will play all of the tracks in the current directory, and then stop playing. Repeat Dir All: This will play of the tracks in the current directly, and then repeat them. Repeat All: This will play all of the tracks on the CD, and then repeat them. Shuffle: This will play all of the tracks from the CD in a random order, and then stop playing. Shuffle 1: Pressing the left or right joypad button will randomly select a track, which will then be repeated continually. Shuffle Dir All: This will play all of the tracks in the current directory in a random order. Shuffle All: This will play all of the tracks on the CD in a random order. Once all of the tracks have been played, it will re-shuffle the songs and play the entire CD again. Intro: This feature will play the first 10 seconds of a track, and then move on to the next track. Intro Highlight will skip to 1 minute into the track, and then play 10 seconds of it before moving on to the next track. User Def EQ (User Defined Equalizer) Bass Boost: The Bass level may be set from 0 to 12 DB Bass Freq: The Bass frequency for the Bass Boost may be set to 50 Hz (Level 1), 100 Hz (Level 2), or 200 Hz (Level 3). If the Bass Boost is set to 0, the Bass Freq will have no affect. Treble Boost: The Treble level may be set from 0 to 12 DB. Treble Freq: The Treble frequency for the Treble Boost may be set to 2 kHz (Level 1), 4 kHz (Level 2), or 7 kHz (Level 3). If the Treble Boost is set to 0, the Treble Freq will have no affect. Part 2 Navigation To access the User Preferences, long press the EQ button. This will bring you to the list of main categories. Short pressing the Joypad up and down will scroll through the category list. The list will loop, so when you get to the bottom (User Def EQ) and press down again, it will cycle you to the top of the list (General). In the main category list, short pressing the left button on the Joypad (Rewind) will exit the User Preferences menu. Short pressing the right button on the Joypad (Fast Forward) will take you to the individual options within the main category. Once in the category, a short press to the right button on the Joypad (Fast Forward) will change to the next option for that setting. These options will cycle through the choices. Only the right joypad button can be used to change the setting. Short pressing the up or down button on the Joypad will cycle through the list of options within each category. A short press to the left button on the Joypad (Rewind) will take you back to the main list of categories. For Example, if you wanted to adjust the following settings to these values: Beep Volume = 2 Resume = On Adapter Light = Off Scan Speed = 2X This is the button sequence you would follow: Long Press EQ to get to the User Preferences, and then short press: Down to Control Right Down to Beep Sound Right (until Vol 2) Down to Resume Right until On Left Down to Display Right Down to Adapter Light Right until ON Left Down to Control Right Down to FF/RW Speed Right to 2X Left to the Main Category List Left to Exit the User Preferences. There is a slight learning curve, and it may seem a little confusing at first, but with just a little practice, you should soon be navigating and changing the options with ease. Setting Examples Unless otherwise noted, the User Preferences have been left to the default settings. We support playlists created with the Winamp (http://www.winamp.com). Other software may be used to create playlists, but we will only support those made with Winamp. Winamp is a free program and may be downloaded from the link above. Creating a Playlist: This is the supported method of creating a playlist. Playlists made any other way might work, but if you run into difficulties, please follow these directions: 1) Create a folder into which you will copy all of the tracks you will burn to the CD. For simplicity, we'll call the folder "Volt" and put it on the root of the C:/ drive (C:\Volt). 2) Copy all of the tracks you want to burn onto the CD into this new folder (C:\Volt). You may use subfolders if you wish to keep tracks separated by album, artist, genre, etc. 3) Run Winamp and create a playlist using the tracks from C:\Volt, and be sure to save the playlist in the C:\Volt folder. This is very important. The tracks and the playlists must be in the same folder. Please note ­ we do not support the actual Winamp software, and you will need to use the help menus in the software for assistance in creating playlists. 4) You may use multiple playlists, just repeat step 3 for each one. 5) Burn the contents of the C:\Volt folder the root of your CD. Ensure that the file structure within the C:\Volt folder remains intact. Running a Playlist: 1) Put your CD in the RioVolt and turn on the player. 2) The RioVolt will begin playing the first track on the CD. Press the joypad down to stop laying the track. 3) Press the PROG button on the player. The first option is PROGRAM, which you would use to program a playlist on the RioVolt. Below PROGRAM, you will see the playlists that are burnt onto the CD. Use the joypad to select the playlist you wish to activate, then press the right arrow (FF) on the joypad to activate it. The RioVolt will load up the information from the playlist and begin playing.
