DVD-5900 and AVR-5803/5800 Upgrade Audio Setup Tips
The following setup guidelines are recommended for the DVD-5900 player and the AVR-5803/5800 upgraded units (both units to be referred to hereafter as AVR-580x) utilizing the DENON Link SE to provide for the highest playback performance and ease of use for DVD-Audio/Super Audio CD material as well as DVD-Video audio. When using the DENON Link SE to transport Dolby and dts data, as well as DVD-Audio, from the DVD-5900 to the AVR-580x SE you must do the following: § CONNECT THE DENON LINK CABLE FROM THE DVD-5900 TO THE AVR-580X. FOR SUPER AUDIO CD YOU WILL NEED TO CONNECT 3 PAIRS OF HIGH QUALITY ANALOG CABLES FROM THE 5.1 ANALOG OUTPUTS TO EITHER EXT. IN 1 OR 2 INPUTS ON THE AVR-580X. BE SURE ON THE DVD-5900 TO USE THE FL (FRONT LEFT) AND FR (FRONT RIGHT) `1' LABELLED OUTPUTS HERE WE ALSO RECOMMEND CONNECTING A SINGLE PAIR OF ANALOG CABLES FROM THE DVD-5900S `FL/FR 2' AUDIO OUTPUTS TO AN UNUSED STEREO INPUT SOURCE, LIKE `CD'.
Ø
§
This will permit 2 Channel SACD, or CD, listening in `Stereo', `Direct' or `Pure Direct' modes and maintain your subwoofer (2.1 channel playback). Only in the these modes, are the analog signals NOT converted to digital.
NOTE: THE ANALOG CABLE CONNECTION RECOMMENDATIONS ARE NOT NEEDED IF YOU DECIDE TO LET THE AVR-5803 PERFORM ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERSION ON THE EXT INPUTS AS THE RECEIVER WILL DO BASS MANAGEMENT ON ALL ANALOG SIGNALS (2 CHANNEL AND MULTI-CHANNEL) AND ROUTE INFORMATION TO YOUR SUBWOOFER. ALSO IF YOU USE THE A/D CONVERSION INSIDE THE AVR-580X, YOU WILL NOTICE MUCH BETTER, AND CONSISTANT, SUBWOOFER PERFORMANCE WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS OPTION AS THERE IS NO DEGRADATION OF THE SACD SIGNALS.
Step 1
Now we need to setup the AVR-580x to accept the DENON Link and to know how to handle the SACD analog signals, allowing the player and receiver to switch between the Link and EXT. Inputs automatically. § ACCESSING THE `SYSTEM SETUP' FUNCTION OF THE AVR-580X, TOGGLE DOWN TO `DIGITAL MULTI CH IN' (PAGE 2 OF SETUP MENU), PRESS ENTER.

Ø
You will then be requested to confirm you will have an `Extra Digital In Setting', toggle left to highlight `Yes' and press Enter Next you will need to activate `DENON Link', toggle right to change `Off' to `On' and press Enter
Ø
Now you should see just below, `No Digital Signal', toggle right till `EXT. In 1', is shown. You may select `EXT. IN 2' if that is where you will have the 5.1 Analog cables connected from the DVD-5900. Ø Before exiting this screen, be sure that the `Digital Ext. In' setting is set to `NO'.
Ø
Ø
Press Enter to exit and return to `System Setup' screen
§
FROM THE `SYSTEM SETUP' SCREEN TOGGLE UP TO `EXT. IN SETUP' AND PRESS ENTER. THIS STEP IS ONLY FOR AVR-5803 USERS. UPGRADED AVR-5800 USERS SHOULD CONTINUE TO THE NEXT STEP. Ø Select either `EXT. IN-1' or `EXT. IN-2' depending on which set of inputs you have the 5.1 analog cables from the DVD-5900 connected to then press Enter. Ø You are now at the `Ext. In Setup' screen. Your first option setting is `Mode'. Toggling right or left, it doesn't matter, you have 2 choices to select from `DSP' or `Analog'. If you wish the AVR-5803 to perform A/D conversion as mentioned earlier, be sure the `Mode' is set to `DSP'. If you do not wish to have the 5803 do any conversion, the `Mode' should be set to `Analog'. O If `DSP' is selected you will note the adjustable option `S. Back'. This is for telling the receiver if you wish to use your Surround Back Channel speakers when playing back 5.1 material. This option is only available if `DSP' is selected in `Mode' · · · Your selections are `NOT USED'; either you do not have Surround Back speakers or you do not wish for the receiver to send signals to those speakers. `SB (SBL) for when you have only one Surround Back speaker, connected to the Surround Back Left amplifier channel `SBL/SBR' for a pair of Surround Back speakers
Ø Toggle down from Mode to `SW Level', which is available for either `DSP' or Analog Modes. Select output levels to compensate for decreased Subwoofer output levels from players. For our purposes here, set to 0dB. REGARDLESS OF USING `ANALOG' OR `DSP' MODES ON THE `EXT. INPUTS', ADJUST THIS SETTING, IF YOU FEEL THERE IS A LACK OF SUBWOOFER OUTPUT. Ø Toggle down again to `INPUT Vol.', which is only available when `Mode' is set to `DSP". This is an Input Volume Level control and should only be adjusted after you see the front panel display say "OVERLOAD". Come back to this setting and decrease from 0 to -20dB. § PRESS ENTER TO RETURN TO `SYSTEM SETUP', THEN PRESS `SYSTEM SETUP' ON THE REMOTE TO EXIT COMPLETELY. FOR THE SAKE OF TIME WE ARE ASSUMING YOU HAVE ALREADY CALIBRATED YOUR AVR-580X, IF NOT PLEASE DO SO BEFORE CONTINUING ON TO THE NEXT STEP.

Step 2
Once your receiver has been calibrated, we recommend the following: § § SELECT THE `DVD' INPUT ON THE AVR-580X USING EITHER THE REMOTE, OR THE FRONT PANEL, PRESS THE `EXT. IN' BUTTON. Ø Using only the remote, we are going to reset the output levels for the EXT. Inputs, as they will be set to the Global Channel Levels you set during the calibration process. On the RC8000 remote, toggle the Joystick to the right (Be sure that the remote is set to control the receiver) once, you should be on Page 2/5 for the receiver control. Press `Cursor/Page' button, located bottom center on the LCD display. It will now be shaded. Ø Now by pressing the Joystick we have an `Enter' key instead of a `Device' selection key. Ø Each press on the `Enter' key will display an individual channel and level on the front panel display of your receiver. When a channel is displayed, toggling left or right will lower or increase that channels output level. Please adjust all channels levels to 0.0db, this is our reference point. By adjusting these levels, you will NOT be changing the global settings you set during the calibration process, only the levels to the EXT. Input.
Step 3
Now we need to setup the DVD-5900. The proceeding instructions are assuming the DVD-5900 is set to factory default settings. If not, reset the `Audio' setting to factory default, especially `DENON Link Off', and `Source Direct Off'. § ACCESSING THE `SETUP' FUNCTION OF THE PLAYER, TOGGLE TO THE `AUDIO SETUP' SCREEN (PAGE 4 OF 6). TOGGLE DOWN TO `AUDIO CHANNEL' AND HIGHLIGHT `MULTI CHANNEL', PRESS `ENTER'. Ø You will be shown a screen display labeled `Speaker Setup', where you will configure the unit to your speakers. § THE `SPEAKER CONFIGURATION' TAB SHOULD BE HIGHTLIGHTED, IF NOT, TOGGLE TO IT AND PRESS `ENTER'
Ø
Set all speakers to `Large' and subwoofer `Yes'. We recommend this setting as the player will automatically default to `Source Direct On' during playback of SACD when the DENON Link is turned on. `Source Direct will override any setting in `Speaker Configuration' to all speakers `Large'. When finished press the `Return' button on the remote. You will return to the `Speaker Setup' page.
§
TOGGLE TO THE `DELAY TIME' TAB AND PRESS `ENTER
Ø
You are now shown a screen where you will tell the DVD-5900 how far away you are (in your favorite listening position) from each speaker in your system. We recommend using a tape measure for this, and round up to the next number in whole feet, for example if you

are 14' ¾" away, then tell the 5900 for that speaker 15 feet. Once you have done all the speakers in your system, press the `Return' key. NOTE: IF USING THE `DSP' SETTING ON THE AVR-5803S `EXT. INPUTS, PLEASE SET THE CHANNELS LEVELS ON THE DVD-5900 TO MAXIMUM, OR 0dB, AND THE DELAY TIMES TO MINIMUM, 0 OR 1 FOOT. DO NOT DO THE CALIBRATON STEPS BELOW. § NOW TOGGLE TO THE `CHANNEL LEVEL' BUTTON, AND PRESS `ENTER' Ø For these adjustments we highly recommend you use an SPL (Sound Pressure Level) meter, Radio Shack makes an excellent analog one for about $35. This exercise is similar to setting up the surround processor, with a twist. Since you are using test tones generated inside the DVD-5900, and not the processor, it is crucial that you first have your AVR-5803 already calibrated. Ø Be sure to first set the `Input Mode' of your AVR-5803 set to either EXT. In 1 or 2, depending on which one you have connected the 5.1 analog cables from the DVD-5900. Next turn the volume of your receiver till `00' is the level shown on the front panel display.
Ø
We suggest setting the `Test Tone' to manual as this setting allows you to control the tempo of calibration, not the player. You can do this by highlighted `Test Tone' and toggling right or left until `Manual' shows on the display. It is also easier on the nerves. The meter switches should be set to `C' weighting and `Slow'. Go through each channel, so they calibrate to, or as close to, 75dB on the meter. If you cannot get a 75dB reading with the channels levels on the 5900 at maximum, you will need to adjust the EXT. Input's channels levels on the receiver. Use the same procedure as described above to access and adjust the levels, but be sure the test tones from the DVD-5900 are still active.
§ § §
ONCE COMPLETED, PRESS THE `RETURN' KEY TWICE. YOU SHOULD BE BACK TO THE `AUDIO SETUP' MENU. FROM HERE WE NEED TO ACTIVATE `DENON LINK'. TOGGLE DOWN AND HIGHLIGHT `DENON LINK', TOGGLE RIGHT, THEN DOWN TO HIGHLIGHT `'2ND' AND PRESS ENTER.
Ø
You will note that all other options on the `Audio' Page of been grayed out, read "no longer accessible". This is normal.
§
ONCE COMPLETED, PLEASE PRESS THE `INPUT' MODE BUTTON ON THE REMOTE OR FRONT PANEL OF THE AVR-580X, TILL THE DISPLAY PANEL READS `AUTO'.
You may ask "why did we set up the delay time and channel levels, when after activating DENON Link the options are no longer available?" Well truth be told, those settings are active during SACD playback (which for the moment does not travel digitally down the Link) on the analog outputs. The DVD-5900 does permit, in pure DSD, channel level and delay time control! The only drawback is you loose Bass Management control. You may notice a low output from your subwoofer channel, if so you can adjust the `Subwoofer Input Level' control on the `EXT. Input' in the AVR-5803 System Setup and/or increase the `Subwoofer Channel Output' level control to compensate (for AVR-5800 users this is your only option). Now digital data from any of the following formats will travel down the Link and be decoded by the 5803; Dolby, dts, PCM, MP3, WMA and DVD-Audio. The 5803 will know what to do with the signals automatically

for you, unless you change it. For example, the 5803 will see DVD-Audio material and go into Multi-channel Direct mode, however if you would rather listen to DVD-Audio in Pro Logic IIx you have that choice. When you want to play an SACD, you do not have to change inputs, unless it is 2 channel only and you would like your subwoofer to play, then you would switch to the CD input if you connected the extra stereo pair of analog cables as recommended above. The DVD-5900 would cut the signals from traveling down the Link, which tells the AVR-5803 to go to the EXT Inputs you directed the receiver to go to if no signal present, and playback would commence!
