Basic care and tips for using your computer Turning your computer on and off To turn on your computer, open the lid and press the power button above the keyboard. To turn the power off, you can do any of the following: · · Click on the Start button in Windows, and then select Shut Down on the popup menu. Push the power button. To use this method, you must first click on the Power Management icon in Windows Control Panel, and then check that the power button is set to shut down the computer when pressed. See Windows Help for more information. English First things first English iv English Note: If you are unable to shut down the computer in the usual way, press and hold the power button for more than four seconds. You should then wait at least two seconds before turning the computer on again. Taking care of your computer Your computer will serve you well if you take care of it. · · · · · · · · · · Do not expose the computer to direct sunlight. Do not place it near sources of heat, such as a radiator. Do not expose the computer to temperatures below 0°C (32°F), or above 50°C (122°F). Do not expose the computer to magnetic fields. Do not expose the computer to rain or moisture. Do not spill water or any liquid on the computer. Do not subject the computer to heavy shock or vibration. Do not expose the computer to dust or dirt. Do not place objects on top of the computer. Do not slam the lid shut. Close the computer gently. Do not place the computer on unstable or uneven surfaces. Taking care of your AC adapter It is important that you look after your AC adapter. · · Do not connect the adapter to any other device. Do not step on the power cord or place heavy objects on it. Route the power cord away from areas where people might walk on it or trip over it. Do not pull on the power cord when disconnecting from the mains power socket. Grasp and pull the plug instead. The total ampere ratings of equipment plugged into a power strip should not exceed the ampere rating for that power strip. · · v It is also important that you look after your computer's battery pack. · · · · Use the correct battery model for your computer. Do not use other kinds of batteries. Turn the power off before removing or replacing the battery. Do not tamper with the battery. Keep the battery away from children. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Recycle if possible. Cleaning and servicing When cleaning your computer, it is important that you follow these steps: · · · Turn off the computer and remove the battery. Disconnect the AC adapter. Clean with a soft cloth moistened with a little water. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Refer to the chapter entitled "Frequently asked questions" on page 69 if any of the following occurs: · · · You drop the computer or damage the case. You spill liquid on the computer. The computer does not operate normally. The Power and Battery status indicators are visible even when the display is closed. Icon Function Caps lock Description Lights when Caps Lock is activated. Num lock Lights when Num Lock is activated. Media Activity Lights when the disc or optical drive is activated. Lights green when the power is on and orange when the computer is in standby mode. Lights orange when the battery is charging. Power Battery 13 The full-sized keyboard includes an embedded numeric keypad, separate cursor keys, two Windows keys and twelve function keys. Special keys Lock keys The keyboard has three lock keys which you can toggle on and off. Lock Key Caps Lock Description When Caps Lock is on, all alphabetic characters are typed in uppercase. Toggle on and off by pressing the Caps Lock key on the left side of the keyboard. When Num Lock is on, the embedded numeric keypad can be used. Toggle on and off by pressing the Fn + F11 keys simultaneously. When Scroll Lock is on, the screen toggles up or down one line at a time when the up and down cursor control keys are pressed. NumLk Scr Lk English Using the Keyboard English 14 Getting familiar with your computer English Embedded numeric keypad The embedded numeric keypad functions like a desktop numeric keypad. It is indicated by small characters located on the upper right corner of the keycaps. To simplify the keyboard legend, cursor-control key symbols are not printed on the keys. Desired Access Number keys on embedded keypad Cursor-control keys on embedded keypad Main keyboard keys Num lock On Type numbers in a normal manner. Hold Shift while using cursor-control keys. Hold Fn while typing letters on embedded keypad. Num lock Off Hold Fn while using cursor-control keys. Type the letters in a normal manner. Note : If an external keyboard or keypad is connected to the computer, the Num Lock feature automatically shifts from the internal keyboard to the external keyboard or keypad. 15 The keyboard features two keys that provide Windows-specific functions. Key Windows logo key Description Start button. Combinations with this key perform shortcut functions. Below are a few examples: + Tab (Activates next taskbar button) + E (Explores My Computer) + F (Finds Document) + M (Minimizes All) Shift + + M (Undoes Minimize All) + R (Displays the Run... dialog box) Application key Opens a context menu (same as a right-click). English Windows keys English 16 Getting familiar with your computer English Hot keys Using the Fn key with another key creates a hot key, providing a quick and convenient method for controlling various functions. To use a hot key, first hold down the Fn key. Next, press the second key in the combination. Finally, release both keys. Your computer provides the following hot keys: Hot key Fn-F1 Icon Function Hot key help Description Displays help on hot keys. Fn-F2 Setup Accesses the computer's configuration utility. Switches the power management scheme used by the computer (function available if supported by operating system). See " Power management" on page 38. Fn-F3 Power management scheme toggle Fn-F4 Sleep Puts the computer in Sleep mode. See " Power management" on page 38. 17 Hot key Fn-F5 Icon Function Display toggle Description Switches display output between the display screen, external monitor (if connected) and both the display screen and external monitor. Turns the display screen backlight off to save power. Press any key to return. Turns the internal touchpad on and off. Turns the speakers on and off. Fn-F6 Screen blank Fn-F7 Touchpad toggle Fn-F8 Speaker toggle Fn- Volume up Increases the speaker volume. Fn- Volume down Decreases the speaker volume. Fn- Brightness up Increases the screen brightness. Fn- Brightness down Decreases the screen brightness. English English 18 Getting familiar with your computer English The Euro symbol If your keyboard layout is set to United States-International or United Kingdom or if you have a keyboard with a European layout, you can type the Euro symbol on your keyboard. Note for US keyboard users: The keyboard layout is set when you first set up Windows. For the Euro symbol to work, the keyboard layout has to be set to United States-International. To verify the keyboard type in Windows® XP, follow the steps below: 1 2 3 4 Click on Start, Control Panel. Double-click on Regional and Language Options. Click on the Language tab and click on Details. Verify that the keyboard layout used for "En English (United States)" is set to United States-International. If not, select and click on ADD; then select United StatesInternational and click on OK. 5 Click on OK. To type the Euro symbol: 1 2 3 Locate the Euro symbol on your keyboard. Open a text editor or word processor. Hold Alt Gr and press the Euro symbol. Note: Some fonts and software do not support the Euro symbol. Please refer to www.microsoft.com/typography/faq/faq12.htm. 19 The built-in touchpad is a pointing device that senses movement on its surface. This means the cursor responds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palmrest provides optimum comfort and support. Note: When using an external USB mouse, you can press Fn-F7 to disable the touchpad. Touchpad basics The following items teach you how to use the touchpad: · · Move your finger across the touchpad to move the cursor. Press the left (1) and right (3) buttons located on the edge of the touchpad to do selection and execution functions. These two buttons are similar to the left and right buttons on a mouse. English Touchpad English 20 Getting familiar with your computer English Tapping on the touchpad produces similar results. · Use the 4-way scroll (2) button (top/bottom/left and right) to scroll a page up, down, left or right. This button mimics your cursor pressing on the vertical and horizontal scroll bars of Windows applications. Function Execute Left button Click twice quickly Right button Center buttons Tap Tap twice (at the same speed as double-clicking a mouse button) Tap once Tap twice (at the same speed as double-clicking a mouse button) then hold finger to the touchpad on the second tap and drag the cursor Click once Select Drag Click once Click and hold, then use finger to drag the cursor on the touchpad Access context menu Scroll Click and hold the button in the desired direction (up/down/ left/right) Note: Keep your fingers dry and clean when using the touchpad. Also keep the touchpad dry and clean. The touchpad is sensitive to finger movements. Hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will not increase the touchpad's responsiveness. 21 Located above the keyboard are five buttons. The left-most button is the power button. To the right of the power button are the four launch keys. They are designated as the mail button, the web browser button, and two programmable buttons (P1 and P2). Launch key Mail Web browser P1 P2 Default application Email application Internet browser application User-programmable User-programmable English Launch Keys English 22 Getting familiar with your computer English E-Mail Detection Click right button at the Launch Manager icon on the taskbar and click on E-Mail Detection. In this dialog box, you have the option to enable disable mail checking, set the time interval for mail checking, etc. If you already have an email account, you can fill in User Name, Password and POP3 Sever in the dialog box. The POP3 Sever is the mail server where you get your email. Aside from the email checking function, there is a mail button that is used to launch the email application. It is located above the keyboard right below the LCD. 23 This computer supplies you with the following media storage: · · The High-capacity Enhanced-IDE hard disk The high speed optical drive Hard disk The high-capacity hard disk is the answer to your storage needs. This is where your programs and data are stored. Optical drive The optical drive provides increased storage capacity, as well as offering a host of multimedia possibilities. English Storage English 24 Getting familiar with your computer English Ejecting the optical disc To eject the optical disc when the computer is turned on, press the drive eject button. To load an optical disc: · With the computer turned on, insert the disc into the drive slot until you feel the drive catch the disc and take it the rest of the way in. The disc may need to be inserted nearly all the way in before the drive takes it in rest of way. · 25 The computer comes with 16-bit high-fidelity AC'97 stereo audio, and includes a built-in sensitive microphone and dual stereo speakers. There are audio ports on the left of the computer. See "Left view" on page 6 for more information on connecting external audio devices. Adjusting the volume Adjusting the volume on the computer is as easy as pressing some buttons. See "Hot keys" on page 16 for more informations on adjusting the speaker volume. English Audio English 26 Getting familiar with your computer English Connectivity options Your computer has built-in connectivity options, enabling you to hook up to a network or communicate over a phone line. Ethernet and LAN The built-in network feature allows you to connect your computer to an Gigabit Ethernet-based (GbE-based) network. To use the network feature, connect an Ethernet cable from the network jack on the rear of the computer to a network jack or hub on your network. Important! See Windows® Help for information on setting up a network connection. 27 Your computer has a built-in V.92 56Kbps AC'97 Link fax/data modem. Warning: This modem port is not compatible with digital phone lines. Plugging the computer into a digital phone system will damage the modem. To use the fax/data modem port, connect a phone cable from the modem port to a telephone jack. English Fax/data modem English 28 Getting familiar with your computer English Fast infrared The computer's fast infrared (FIR) port allows you to do wireless data transfer with other IR-aware computers and peripherals such as PDAs (personal digital assistants), mobile phones, and infrared printers. The infrared port can transfer data at speeds of up to four megabits per second (Mbps) at a distance of up to one meter. 29 Your computer is a valuable investment that you need to take care of. Learn how to protect and take care of your computer. Security features include hardware and software locks -- a security notch and passwords. Using a computer security lock A security keylock notch located on the left panel of the computer lets you connect a Kensington-compatible computer security lock. Wrap a computer security lock cable around an immovable object such as a table or locked drawer handle. Insert the lock into the notch and turn the key to secure the lock. Some keyless models are also available. Using passwords Passwords protect your computer from unauthorized access. Setting these passwords creates several different levels of protection for your computer and data: · Supervisor Password prevents unauthorized entry into the BIOS Utility. Once set, you must key-in this password to gain access to the BIOS Utility. See "BIOS Setup Utility" on page 64. User Password secures your computer against unauthorized use. Combine the use of this password with password checkpoints on boot-up and resume from hibernation for maximum security. Password on Boot secures your computer against unauthorized use. Combine the use of this password with password checkpoints on boot-up and resume from hibernation for maximum security. · · English Securing your computer English 30 · Getting familiar with your computer Hard Disk Password protects your data by preventing unauthorized access to your hard disk. Even if the hard disk is removed from the computer and moved to another computer, it cannot be accessed without the Hard Disk Password. English Important! Do not forget your Supervisor and Hard Disk Password! If you forget your password, please get in touch with your dealer or an authorized service center. Entering passwords When a password is set, a password prompt appears in the left-hand corner of the display screen. · · When the Supervisor Password is set, a prompt appears when you press F2 to enter the BIOS Utility at boot-up. Type the Supervisor Password and press Enter to access the BIOS Utility. If you enter the password incorrectly, a warning message appears. Try again and press Enter. When the User Password is set and the Password on boot parameter is enabled, a prompt appears at boot-up. Type the User Password and press Enter to use the computer. If you enter the password incorrectly, a warning message appears. Try again and press Enter. When the Hard Disk Password is set, a prompt appears at boot-up. Type the Hard Disk Password and press Enter to use the computer. If you enter the password incorrectly, a warning message appears. Try again and press Enter. · · · · Important! You have three chances to enter a password. If you fail to enter the password correctly after three tries, the system halts. Slide and hold the power switch for four seconds to shut down the computer. Then turn on the computer again, and try again. If you fail to enter the Hard Disk Password, please contact your dealer or an authorized service center. Setting passwords You can set passwords using the BIOS Utility. Operating on battery power Your Ferrari 3400 computer operates on battery or AC power. This chapter provides information for operating on battery power, as well as information on how your computer manages and saves power. 33 The computer uses a re-chargeable Li-Ion battery pack. Battery pack characteristics The battery pack has the following characteristics: · · Employs current battery technology standards. Delivers a battery-low warning. The battery is recharged whenever you connect the computer to the mains power supply. Your computer supports charge-in-use, enabling you to recharge the battery while you continue to operate the computer. However, recharging with the computer turned off results in a significantly faster charge time. The battery will come in handy when you travel or during a power failure. It is advisable to have an extra fully charged battery pack available as backup. Contact your dealer for details on ordering a spare battery pack. Maximizing the battery's life Like all other batteries, your computer's battery will degrade over time. This means that the battery's performance will diminish with time and use. To maximize your battery's life, you are advised to adhere to the recommendations set out below. Conditioning a new battery pack Before you use a battery pack for the first time, there is a "conditioning" process that you should follow: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Insert the new battery without turning the computer on. Connect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery. Disconnect the AC adapter. Turn on the computer and operate using battery power. Fully deplete the battery until the battery-low warning appears. Reconnect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery again. English Battery pack English 34 Operating on battery power English
