If you are unsure about any of the meanings of these warnings, contact the Customer Care Department. General safety · Repairs to the washing machine should only be carried out by qualified personnel. Repairs carried out by inexperienced persons may cause injury or serious malfunctioning. Contact your local AEG Service Force Center. · Never operate the washing machine if the mains cable is damaged or the control panel, work top or base area are damaged allowing internal components to be accessible. · Switch off the appliance and isolate from the mains supply before carrying out any cleaning or maintenance work! · Do not use the mains cable to pull the plug out of the socket. · Do not spray the washing machine with water. · During high temperature wash programs, the glass of the door may become hot. Do not touch! · Allow the water to cool down before cleaning the drain pump or carrying out emergency emptying. · Small animals can nibble at mains cables and water hoses causing electric shock hazard. Installation · Please follow the separate "Installation and connection instructions" supplied with the appliance. · Installation must comply with local water authority and building regulations requirements. · Before using the appliance for the first time, we recommend you run a cotton wash cycle at 95 °C without any laundry and half the recommended amount of detergent. This is to remove any residues from the drum, which may have been left during manufacture. 5 Safety instructions Child Safety · This appliance is designed to be operated by adults. Children should not be allowed to tamper with the controls or play with the appliance. · Pets and children have been known to climb into washing machines. Please check the drum before use. · Keep all packaging well away from children. · Keep all detergents in a safe place out of children´s reach. · When disposing of the appliance, cut off the mains cable, and destroy the plug. Disable the door catch to prevent young children being trapped inside. During Use · Always unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply after use. · Only use the washing machine to wash normal domestic washing. If the washing machine is used for any other purpose or is incorrectly used, the manufacturer adopts no liability for any damages which may result. · It is dangerous to alter the specifications or attempt to modify this product in any way. · Only use detergents which are suitable for automatic washing machines, and follow the recommendations of the detergent manufacturer. · Garments which have been in contact with flammable solvents should not be washed. · Do not use your washing machine for dry cleaning. · Dyes and bleaching agents may only be used if specifically permitted by the manufacturer of these products. We cannot be held liable for any damages. 6 2 Disposal Packaging · Dispose of the packaging material correctly. All packaging materials are environmentally friendly and can be disposed of without any danger to the environment. · The external plastic covering and bags inside are made of polyethylene (marking >PE<). · The padding is made of CFC free expanded polystyrene (marking >PS<). Washing machine When disposing of the washing machine: · Cut off the mains cable and destroy the plug · Disable the door catch to prevent young children becoming trapped inside. · Use an authorised disposal site. 2 Environmental tips To save water and energy and help to protect the environment, we recommend that you follow these tips: · Do not use a prewash for normally soiled washing. · It is more economical to wash full loads. · When washing small loads reduce the detergent by half to two thirds. · Pre-treat stains, and then wash at a lower temperature. · Use the energy saving program when washing light to normally soiled garments. 7 Important features of your appliance · Setting the program using the program selector and temperature selector. · Stain program for effectively treating stained washing. · Button EASY-CARES for careful treatment of easy-care fabrics. · Button SOAKING, in order to separately soak washing with dried on dirt. · Energy saving program for light to normal soilage. · Maximum Spin speed 1000 revolutions per minute. · Speed for the final spin can be reduced to 600 revolutions per minute. · Rinse hold can be added: the washing remains in the final rinse water, it is not spun. · Automatic load recognition with fuzzy logic: sensor controlled washing process with variable number of rinse cycles, water quantity dependent on foam and load, controlled spin etc, ensuring best washing and rinsing results with the most economical water consumption. · 3-chamber detergent compartment for washing powder and fabric softener: stain remover in prewash chamber · ÖKO lock: The Öko lock ensures effective detergent usage. The Öko valve closes off the wash tub from the drainage system during all wash programmes. · Scoop ribs in the washing machine drum: ensure washing is wet fast and equally. · Anti-unbalance control system: for stability and smooth running. · Connection for hot and cold water or only cold water 8 Description of the appliance Front view Control panel Detergent drawer Rating plate (behind door) Door with handle Flap in front of drain pump Height adjustable feet 9 Description of the appliance Control panel Button Final spin speed Button EASY-CARES Button SOAKING Program selector Temperature selector Button RINSE HOLD Indicator ON Programme Selector Knob Turn the programme knob in a clockwise direction until the marker coincides with the required programme. If you turn the selector knob too far, do not attempt to turn the control knob anticlockwise, instead continue turning clockwise until the desired programme has been selected. To start the programme, pull the knob outwards and the pilot light will illuminate. At the end of the programme push the knob inwards and the pilot light will go out. Program group COTTONS/LINEN, EASY-CARES (+button) · STAIN For treating very dirty or stained washing using stain remover (extended main wash with stain remover phase, not selectable for woollens setting). 10 Description of the appliance · MAIN WASH Main-wash cycle for normal soilage (wash ­ rinse/soft-rinse ­ spin) · QUICK WASH Shortened main-wash cycle for lightly soiled washing. · RINSE Separate rinse, e.g. for rinsing hand-washed fabrics (spin according to the selected washing cycle). · CONDITIONER Conditioner rinse (or starching): Liquid conditioner or starch is added from the À compartment during the rinse. · SPIN Spin after RINSE HOLD, or separate spin for hand-washed fabrics. Program group DELICATES · DELICATES Main wash cycle for delicates (Wash rinse/conditioner ­ short spin). · SHORT SPIN Spin after RINSE HOLD or separate gentle spin of hand-washed delicates Program group WOOL · WOOL Main wash cycle for wool and sensitive fabrics. (Wash ­ conditioner ­ short spin). · GENTLE RINSE Separate protective rinse, e.g. for rinsing hand-washed fabrics (1 Rinse cycle and subsequent short spin). · SHORT SPIN Spin after Rinse Hold or separate short spin of hand-washed woollen and sensitive fabrics. PRE WASH/SOAKING · PRE WASH Separate PRE WASH (approx. 20 minutes, maximum 40° C) and subsequent pumping out. 3 After PRE WASH, the main wash cycle must be set as desired, the program does not continue automatically. · SOAKING Separate soaking, when PRE WASH/SOAKING is set via program selector and the SOAKING button is pressed. 11 Description of the appliance Soaking duration approx. 20 minutes, maximum 40 °C (approx. 15 minutes when EASY-CARES button is additionally pressed). Afterwards the washing remains in the water until the water has been pumped out. PUMP OUT Pumping out of water after RINSE HOLD (without spin) or after separate soaking. Program selector as progress indicator The program selector serves as a progress indicator by moving clockwise until the end of the program is reached. Temperature selector You can set the following temperature steps via temperature selector: Cold, 30, 40, 50, 60, E, 70, 80, 95 2 Position E (energy-saving program) is suitable for boiled washing of light to normal soiling; reduced temperature to approx. 67°C. EASY-CARES button For easy-care washing. This button is active when using the program selector, a program is selected from the group of COTTONS/LINEN, EASY-CARES (+button) or by separate SOAKING. SOAKING button This button is active when PRE WASH/SOAKING is selected. Final spin speed button With this button you reduce the spin speed for the final spin process. RINSE HOLD button If RINSE HOLD is selected the washing remains in the last rinsing water, it will not be spun. Indication lamp ON The indication lamp ON illuminates, as soon as the washing machine is switched on. 12 Description of the appliance Detergent Drawer Suction cap (must be firmly pushed on) k Compartment for pre-wash detergent/soaking agent or stain remover. They are added for PRE WASH and SOAKING right at the beginning of the washing program or for STAIN at the optimum time during the main wash. l Detergent compartment for main wash (and water softening agent if used). w Compartment for liquid conditioners (fabric softener, starch). They are added to the final rinse water. 13 Consumption values and time requirement for selected programs The values in the following table were determined under standard conditions. They provide a useful guide for household use. Before using your machine for the first time 0 Slightly pull the detergent compartment out of the control panel. 0 Pour about 1 litre of water through the detergent compartment into the washing machine. When this has been done the ÖKO lock can function correctly. 0 Run a wash cycle without laundry (COTTONS 95, with half the amount of washing powder). This removes any residues from the drum which may have been left during manufacture. 14 Preparing the washing cycle Sorting out and preparing washing · Sort out washing according to the type and care symbol (see "Types of washing and care symbols"). · Empty the pockets. · Remove any metal parts (safety pins, badges). · To prevent washing from getting damaged and forming bundles: close zips, button up duvet covers and pillow cases, tie up loose straps such as on aprons. · Turn clothes made from double layer fabric inside out (e.g. anoraks, sleeping bags). · For knitted coloured fabrics as well as woollens and fabrics with appliqué: turn inside out. · Put small and delicate items (baby socks, tights) in a washing net or a pillow case with a zip. · Handle curtains with special care. Remove metal strips or plastic hooks. · Keep coloureds and whites separately in different washing cycles. · When washing fabrics requiring different wash temperatures always select the lowest temperature. · New coloured fabric often contains excess dyes. Wash this laundry separately for the first time. · Mix small and large pieces of washing! This improves the effectiveness of the wash and the washing is distributed better when spinning. · Shake out washing before putting it into the machine. · Unfold the washing before putting it into the drum. 15 Preparing the washing cycle Types of washing and care symbols The care symbols assist in selecting the correct washing program. The washing should be sorted according to the type and care symbol. The temperature specifications in the care symbols are always maximum specifications. Cottons I Fabrics made of cotton and linen with this care symbol will withstand maximum wash actions and high temperatures. The COTTONS/LINEN program is suitable for this type of washing. Linens G C Fabrics made of cotton and linen with this care symbol will withstand maximum wash actions and are colourfast at 40°C or 60°C. The COTTONS/LINEN program is suitable for this type of washing. Easy care washing D H Fabrics such as finished cottons, cotton mixtures and synthetics with this care symbol require a gentler washing action. The EASY CARES program is suitable for this type of washing. Delicates D Fabrics such as layered fabrics, microfibres, synthetics or curtains with this care symbol require a very gentle treatment. The DELICATES program is suitable for this type of washing. Woollens and very delicate types of washing 9 ? B Fabrics such as wool, wool mixtures or silk with this care symbol require a very gentle wash cycle. The WOOLLENS program is suitable for this type of washing. Woollens with 9 (wool mark) may only be washed in the washing machine if they bear the addition "does not felt" or "suitable for machine washing". Fabrics with the care symbol 8 (Hand washing) or @ (Do not wash!) may not be washed in the washing machine! Please follow care instructions "wash separately" and "wash separately several times"! 16 Preparing the washing cycle Washing powders and conditioners Which washing powder and conditioner? Only use washing powders and fabric softeners suitable for automatic washing machines. As a general rule follow the instructions of the manufacturers. How much washing powder and fabric softener? The amount to be used depends on · the load: If the detergent manufacturer does not make any specifications for small loads, use a third less for half loads, and for very small loads only use half of the amount of washing powder recommended for a full load. · the degree of soiling of the washing: For only lightly soiled washing use less washing powder. Follow the instructions of the detergent manufacturers and load. · on the degree of hardness of the tap water: The harder the water, the higher the dosage! You will find the quantities to use according to water hardness on the detergent packaging. Liquid detergent Add liquid detergent using the dispenser provided by the detergent manufacturer. Please follow the instructions on the package. Using a water softening agent In areas of hard water, the use of a water softening agent can reduce the amount of detergent necessary. See manufacturers recommendations. 17 Run wash cycle Brief instructions 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 A washing cycle proceeds in the following steps: Check whether the water tap is opened. Open the door, load the washing. Shut the door. Add washing powder/conditioner. Set the correct washing program and temperature. Press EASY-CARES button if required. Pull out program selector. Washing program starts automatically after six seconds. Alter the final spin speed or select RINSE HOLD if required. You can alter this setting and the temperature during the entire washing cycle. When the washing cycle has finished: Important! If the washing cycle ended with Rinse Hold, before opening the door, carry out a PUMP OUT, SPIN or SHORT SPIN. 0 Open the door, remove the washing. 0 Push in the program selector. The washing machine is then switched off. 0 We recommend you unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply when the wash program has finished. Loading the washing 0 Sort and prepare washing according to type. For information on correct preparation of the washing, see "Types of washing and care symbols." 0 Open door: pull the handle of the door. 0 Load the washing. 3 Maximum load see "Program tables" in the following chapter. 0 Firmly shut the door. Caution! When closing the door do not catch any pieces of laundry! Textiles or the appliance could be damaged. 3 18 Run wash cycle Add detergent/conditioner 0 Pull out the detergent drawer as far as it will go. 0 Add detergent/conditioner. 3 For instructions on detergent and conditioners, see "Washing powders and conditioners". k Prewash agent/soaking agent or stain remover (for extra programs PRE WASH/SOAKING or STAIN) l Main detergent in powder form (and water softening agent if used) w Liquid conditioners (fabric softener, starch). Important: Do not fill above the MAX mark. When using thick concentrated fabric conditioners and starches we recommend you dilute the concentrate with water to ensure trouble-free dispensing. If using starch powder dissolve according to manufacturers instructions. 0 Push the detergent drawer in completely. 19 Run wash cycle Selecting the washing program 3 Suitable program and correct temperature for the respective type of washing, see "Program Tables." Set the washing program Important! Program selector may only be rotated clockwise! 0 Set the program selector to the desired washing program Set the temperature 0 Set the temperature selector to the desired temperature. For easy-cares washing: 0 Press the EASY-CARES button. 3 The EASY-CARES button can only be used with the COTTONS/LINEN and SOAKING programs. If used with any other program it will have no effect. For PRE WASH/SOAKING: 0 If separate soaking is desired, press the SOAKING button. 20 Run wash cycle Start the washing program, set the final spin speed or select RINSE HOLD 0 Check the water tap is opened. 0 To start the washing machine, pull out the program selector. The indicator ON light is illuminated, washing program starts automatically after six seconds. 0 Reduce the spin speed for the final spin or select RINSE HOLD if required: ­ Press the button final spin speed or ­ press the RINSE HOLD button. If RINSE HOLD is selected, the washing is not rinsed in the last rinsing water, it will not be spun. During the washing program you can at any time ­ alter the setting of the final spin speed, ­ select RINSE HOLD, ­ alter the temperature setting; ­ press the EASY-CARES button Other settings cannot be altered. To interrupt the washing program prematurely: 0 Push in program selector. 0 Rotate the program selector clockwise to PUMP OUT. 0 Pull out program selector. End of wash cycle/removing the washing The washing program normally ends with the final spin. After PRE WASH/SOAKING: · PRE WASH 3 After PRE WASH, the main wash cycle must be set as desired, the program does not continue automatically. 0 Set the main wash cycle desired. 21 Run wash cycle · SOAKING After soaking separately, the water must be pumped out first and then the main wash cycle can be set as desired: 0 Release the SOAKING button, or rotate the program selector clockwise to PUMP OUT (water is pumped out). 0 Subsequently set the main wash cycle as desired. 3 After Rinse Hold: After a Rinse Hold the water must be pumped out first or the washing spun: 0 Release RINSE HOLD button. 0 Rotate the program selector clockwise to SPIN or SHORT SPIN (washing becomes spun according to the program group selected and the final spin speed set), or rotate program selector clockwise to PUMP OUT (water is pumped out). 0 0 0 0 After the program is completed: Open the door. Remove the washing. Push in the program selector. The indicator ON light is extinguished. Washing machine is off. After the program has finished, pull the detergent drawer out a little so that it can dry. Leave the door ajar for a while. This helps to prevent stagnant smells and helps to preserve the door seal. Close the water tap. We recommend you unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply when the wash program has finished. 0 0 22 Program tables Washing The following tables list the most commonly used and most useful programs. This helps to prevent stagnant smells, and helps to preserve the door seal. 0 Close the water tap. 0 We recommend you unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply when the wash program has finished. Control panel Important! Do not use household furniture polish or abrasive cleaners to clean the panel and operating parts. 0 Wipe over the operating panel with a damp cloth. Only use warm water. Detergent compartment Now and again the detergent compartment should be cleaned. 0 Pull out the detergent compartment as far as it will go. 0 Remove the detergent compartment by pulling firmly. 0 Remove the suction cap. Suction cap 0 Clean the suction cap under running water. 0 Clean the separate compartments with warm water. A bottle brush is a useful aid. 0 Push on the suction cap firmly so that it is sitting tightly. 0 Clean the entire detergent compartment inside area with a brush. 0 Insert the detergent compartment into the guides and push it in. 26 Maintenance and Cleaning Washing machine drum The washing machine drum is made from rust-free stainless steel. Any objects left in the laundry which are likely to rust can stain the drum. Important! Do not clean the stainless steel drum with descaling agents containing acids, scouring agents containing chlorine or iron or steel wool. 0 Remove rust stains on the drum with a stainless steel cleaning agent. Door 0 Regularly check if there are deposits or foreign bodies in the rubber seal behind the door and remove them. Precautionary measures in the event of a risk of frost If the washing machine is located where temperatures may fall below 0 °C the following precautions must be taken: 0 Turn off water tap. 0 Empty the appliance (see "Carrying out an emergency emptying") 0 Disconnect the inlet hose. 3 27 Troubleshooting 3 The whistling noise when spinning may be different to your prevous washing machine which is due to the modern drive system. Only use as much as the washing powder manufacturer recommends. The suds in the main wash cycle create too much foam. 28 Troubleshooting Fault Possible cause The inlet hose connection is not tight. The inlet hose has a leak. Water is leaking out from under the washing machine. The drain pump cover is not tight. Washing is caught in the door. If there are still grey stains on the washing · Washing soiled with ointments, grease or oils was washed with insufficient washing powder. · The temperature selected for the wash was too low. · A frequent cause is that fabric softener especially a concentrated one has come into contact with the washing. Wash out these types of stains as fast as possible and use the fabric softener carefully. If after the final rinse foam is still visible · Modern washing powders can still cause foam in the final rinse cycle. The washing is nevertheless sufficiently rinsed. If there are white residues on the washing · These are insoluble contents of modern washing powders. They are not the result of an insufficient rinse. Shake out the washing or brush it off. Turn the washing inside out before washing it. Review your choice of powder, possibly use liquid detergents. 30 Troubleshooting Carrying out an emergency emptying 1 Warning! Isolate the washing machine from the mains supply before the emergency emptying! If the washing machine no longer pumps out the water an emergency emptying must be carried out. Warning! The water, which flows out of the emergency emptying hose can be hot. First allow the water to cool down before emergency emptying! 0 Put down a flat container to catch the water draining out. 0 Pull down the flap in the left corner of the base strip and remove it. 0 Release the emergency emptying hose from its holder. 0 Pull the emergency emptying hose out a little. 0 Place a container underneath to catch the water. 0 Release the plug of the emergency emptying hose by turning it anticlockwise and pull it out. The water will drain out. Depending on the amount of water, it may be necessary to empty the container catching the water several times. To do this, temporarily close the emergency emptying hose again with the plug. When the water has drained out completely: 0 Push and twist the plug firmly back into the emergency emptying hose. 0 Push the emergency emptying hose back in a little and let it catch on to the holder. 0 Replace the flap in the base plate and close it. 3 When the washing machine is completely empty, the ÖKO lock can no longer function correctly. Therefore before the next wash pour in approx 1 litre of water (pour it in through the washing powder compartment). 31 Troubleshooting Cleaning the drain pump 1 Warning! Switch off the washing machine and pull the plug out of the socket before cleaning the drain pump! 0 First carry out an emergency emptying (see section "Carrying out an emergency emptying"). 0 Place a towel on the floor in front of the cover of the drain pump. Surplus water may flow out. 0 Unscrew the cover of the drain pump by twisting it anti-clockwise and pull it out. 0 Remove any foreign bodies which may be in the pump housing. 0 Check whether the impeller of the pump can be turned. (It is normal for the pump to turn in steps.)
