If you are unsure about any of the meanings of these warnings, contact the Customer Care Department. General safety · Repairs to the washing machine should only be carried out by qualified personnel. Repairs carried out by inexperienced persons may cause injury or serious malfunctioning. Contact your local AEG Service Force Center. · Never operate the washing machine if the mains cable is damaged or the control panel, work top or base area are damaged allowing internal components to be accessible. · Switch off the appliance and isolate from the mains supply before carrying out any cleaning or maintenance work! · Do not use the mains cable to pull the plug out of the socket. · Do not spray the washing machine with water. · During high temperature wash programs, the glass of the door may become hot. Do not touch! · Allow the water to cool down before cleaning the drain pump, carrying out emergency emptying or opening the door in an emergency. · Small animals can nibble at mains cables and water hoses causing electric shock hazard. Installation · This appliance must be connected to the cold water supply only. · Please follow the separate "Installation and connection instructions" supplied with the appliance. · Installation must comply with local water authority and building regulations requirements. · Before using the appliance for the first time, we recommend you run a cotton wash cycle at 95 °C without any laundry and half the recommended amount of detergent. This is to remove any residues from the drum, which may have been left during manufacture. 5 Safety instructions Child Safety · This appliance is designed to be operated by adults. Children should not be allowed to tamper with the controls or play with the appliance. · Pets and children have been known to climb into washing machines. Please check the drum before use. · Keep all packaging well away from children. · Keep all detergents in a safe place out of childrens reach. · When disposing of the appliance, cut off the mains cable, and destroy the plug. Disable the door catch to prevent young children being trapped inside. During Use · Always unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply after use. · Only use the washing machine to wash normal domestic washing. If the washing machine is used for any other purpose or is incorrectly used, the manufacturer adopts no liability for any damages which may result. · It is dangerous to alter the specifications or attempt to modify this product in any way. · Only use detergents which are suitable for automatic washing machines, and follow the recommendations of the detergent manufacturer. · Garments which have been in contact with flammable solvents should not be washed. · Do not use your washing machine for dry cleaning. · Dyes and bleaching agents may only be used if specifically permitted by the manufacturer of these products. We cannot be held liable for any damages. 6 2 Disposal Packaging · Dispose of the packaging material correctly. All packaging materials are environmentally friendly and can be disposed of without any danger to the environment. · The external plastic covering and bags inside are made of polyethylene (marking >PE<). · The padding is made of CFC free expanded polystyrene (marking >PS<). Washing machine When disposing of the washing machine: · Cut off the mains cable and destroy the plug · Disable the door catch to prevent young children becoming trapped inside. · Use an authorised disposal site. 2 Environmental tips To save water, energy and to help protect the environment, we recommend that you follow these tips: · Do not use a prewash for normally soiled washing. · It is more economical to wash full loads. · When washing small loads reduce the detergent by half to two thirds. · Pre-treat stains, and then wash at a lower temperature. · Use the energy saving program when washing light to normally soiled garments. 7 Important features of your appliance · Program and temperature setting using the program selector. · 4 extra programs selectable with buttons. · Stain program for effectively treating stained washing. · Energy saving program for light to normal soilage. · Maximum Spin speed 1200 revolutions per minute, speed for the final spin automatically adapted depending on the washing program: ­COTTONS/LINEN 1200 revolutions per minute ­EASY CARES 1000 revolutions per minute ­DELICATES 1000 revolutions per minute ­WOOLLENS 1000 revolutions per minute · Speed for the final spin can be changed to 1000, 800, 600 or 400 revolutions per minute. · Rinse hold can be added: the washing remains in the final rinse water, it is not spun. · Delay timer: program start can be delayed by 1 to max. 19 hours (e.g. to times with a more economical power rate). · Multi-display to show ­estimated program duration or time left until the end of the program, ­delay timer (start time delay or time left to start of program), ­error code. · Program progress display · Automatic load adaptation with fuzzy logic: sensor controlled washing process with variable number of rinse cycles, water quantity dependent on foam and load, controlled spin etc, thus best washing and rinsing results with the lowest automatically adapted water consumption. · 4-chamber detergent compartment for washing powder and fabric softener: temporary delayed addition of softener, washing powder and stain removing agent enables environmentally friendly washing and improves the effectiveness of the detergents. · ÖKO lock: The Öko lock ensures 100% effective detergent usage. The Öko valve closes off the wash tub from the drainage system during all wash programmes. · Scoop ribs in the washing machine drum: ensure washing is wet fast and equally. · Anti-unbalance control system: for stability and smooth running. 8 Important features of your appliance · Extra water switch: Position 0 = off Position 1 = suds cooling Position 2 = suds cooling and extra rinse ( See "Selecting suds cooling or suds cooling and an extra rinse") What does "update" mean? The control system of your machine is fully electronic. The software which determines this control system can be reprogrammed. If a state of the art in washing technology is reached, your machine can be updated. The cost of the update will be advised at the time of the request. For further information regarding this please contact the AEG Customer Care Department. 9 Description of the appliance Front view Control panel Detergent drawer with handle flap Rating plate (behind door) Door with handle Flap in front of drain pump Height adjustable feet 10 Description of the appliance Control panel Final spin speed/ RINSE HOLD button Program selector DELAY TIMER button Program progress display Display START/PAUSE DOOR Lock button program option buttons Multi-display OVERDOSING display Program selector The program selector determines the type of the washing cycle (e.g. water level, drum movement, number of rinses, spin speed) in accordance with the type of washing, as well as the wash temperature of the water. The different setting positions have the following effect: OFF Switches the washing machine off, in all other positions it is on. COTTONS/LINEN Main wash for cottons/linen (washing at 30-95 °C rinsing/fabric softening, spinning). 2 Position ENERGY SAVING: Energy saving of the program at approx. 67 °C for lightly to normal soilage, extended washing time (cannot be combined with QUICK WASH and STAIN). 11 Description of the appliance EASY CARES Main wash for easy care fabrics (washing at 30-60 °C rinsing/fabric softening, spinning). DELICATES Main wash for delicates (washing at 30-40 °C, rinsing/fabric softening, spinning, higher water level and reduced drum movement). WOOLLENS Main wash for machine washable woollens and delicate fabrics (wash cold up to 40 °C, rinsing/fabric softening, spinning, higher water level and considerably reduced drum movement). GENTLE RINSE Separate gentle rinse, e.g. for rinsing fabrics washed by hand (2 rinses and spin). STARCHING 1 Rinse with fabric softener or a starching agent. Additives from the w compartment is added. PUMP OUT Pumping out the water after a rinse hold (without any spinning at all). SPIN Pumping out the water after a rinse hold and spinning, or separate spinning of hand washed cottons/linen. SHORT SPIN Pumping out the water after a rinse hold and short spinning, or separate short spin of handwashed, delicate fabrics (easy care washing, delicates, woollens). 12 Description of the appliance Program Option buttons The program option buttons are used to adjust the washing program to the degree of soiling of the washing. Depending on the program different functions can be combined. PRE WASH Cold prewash before the main wash which follows automatically (not selectable for the WOOLLENS setting). SOAKING Soak before the main wash which follows automatically (1 hour at 40 °C, extendable to max. 19 hours using the DELAY TIMER button, not selectable for WOOLLENS program). QUICK WASH Shortened main wash for lightly soiled washing. STAIN To treat heavily soiled washing or stained washing with stain remover (extended main wash with stain action phase, not selectable for WOOLLENS program). Final spin speed/RINSE HOLD button With this button you can reduce the maximum speed for the final spin. If RINSE HOLD is selected the washing stays in the final rinse water, it is not spun. START/PAUSE button This starts the washing program and enables interruption of a washing program. DELAY TIMER button With this button you can delay the start of a washing program by 1 to 19 hours (max). When the SOAKING button is pushed the washing program starts immediately, the soak can be extended by setting the delay timer, the main wash follows automatically. 13 Description of the appliance Displays Display DOOR This lamp indicates when the door can be opened if the machine is on: ­ Green light = door can be opened ­ Light off = door cannot be opened ­ Red light = door is open Multi-display The multi-display ­ shows the running time of the selected program or the remaining wash time in minutes (at the same time the display lamp WASH TIME lights up); or ­ shows the delay time or the remaining time in hours until the start of the washing program; or ­ shows an error code (( and a number). Program progress display Before the start of the program, this shows the program steps selected. During the washing program, the display of the current washing program step lights up. OVERDOSING display This shows that in the washing program which has just run, too much washing powder was used and due to this reason an extra rinse was carried out. 14 Description of the appliance Detergent drawer Suction cap (must be firmly pushed on) k Compartment for prewash detergent/soaking agent (water softening agent if used). They are added right at the beginning of the washing program. l Compartment for main wash detergent (if you use a water softening agent and need compartment k for the prewash/soaking agent, add the water softening agent to the main detergent compartment l.) They are added right at the beginning of the main washing program. m Compartment for stain remover. This is added during the STAIN action phase in the main wash at the optimum time. w Compartment for liquid conditioners (fabric softener, starch). They are added to the final rinse water. 15 Consumption values and time required for selected programs The values in the following table were determined under standard conditions. They provide a useful guide for household use. Before using your machine for the first time 0 Slightly pull the detergent compartment out of the control panel. 0 Pour about 1 litre of water through the detergent compartment into the washing machine. When this has been done the ÖKO lock can function correctly. 0 Run a wash cycle without laundry (COTTONS 95, with half the amount of washing powder). This removes any residues from the drum which may have been left during manufacture. 16 Preparing the washing cycle Sorting out and preparing washing · Sort out washing according to the type and care symbol (see "Types of washing and care symbols"). · Empty the pockets. · Remove any metal parts (safety pins, badges). · To prevent washing from getting damaged and forming bundles: close zips, button up duvet covers and pillow cases, tie up loose straps such as on aprons. · Turn clothes made from double layer fabric inside out (e.g. anoraks, sleeping bags). · For knitted coloured fabrics as well as woollens and fabrics with appliqué: turn inside out. · Put small and delicate items (baby socks, tights) in a washing net or a pillow case with a zip. · Handle curtains with special care. Remove metal strips or plastic hooks. · Keep coloureds and whites separately in different washing cycles. · When washing fabrics requiring different wash temperatures always select the lowest temperature. · New coloured fabric often contains excess dyes. Wash this laundry separately for the first time. · Mix small and large pieces of washing! This improves the effectiveness of the wash and the washing is distributed better when spinning. · Shake out washing before putting it into the machine. · Unfold the washing before putting it into the drum. Types of washing and care symbols The care symbols assist in selecting the correct washing program. The washing should be sorted according to the type and care symbol. The temperature specifications in the care symbols are always maximum specifications. 17 Preparing the washing cycle Cottons I Fabrics made of cotton and linen with this care symbol will withstand maximum wash actions and high temperatures. The COTTONS/LINEN program is suitable for this type of washing. Linens G C Fabrics made of cotton and linen with this care symbol will withstand maximum wash actions and are colourfast at 40°C or 60°C. The COTTONS/LINEN program is suitable for this type of washing. Easy care washing D H Fabrics such as finished cottons, cotton mixtures and synthetics with this care symbol require a gentler washing action. The EASY CARES program is suitable for this type of washing. Delicates D Fabrics such as layered fabrics, microfibres, synthetics or curtains with this care symbol require a very gentle treatment. The DELICATES program is suitable for this type of washing. Woollens and very delicate types of washing 9 ? B Fabrics such as wool, wool mixtures or silk with this care symbol require a very gentle wash cycle. The WOOLLENS program is suitable for this type of washing. Woollens with 9 (wool mark) may only be washed in the washing machine if they bear the addition "does not felt" or "suitable for machine washing". Fabrics with the care symbol 8 (Hand washing) or @ (Do not wash!) must not be washed in the washing machine! Please follow care instructions "wash separately" and "wash separately several times"! Detergents and conditioners Only use detergents and fabric softeners suitable for automatic washing machine use. As a general rule follow the instructions of the detergent manufacturers. Which detergent to use For most clothes and household textiles, CONVENTIONAL DETERGENTS will give good washing results. Conventional detergents are available in either a biological, such as Ariel, or a non-biological form, such as Fairy, and are particularly suitable for whites. Biological detergents provide improved stain removal, especially at lower temperatures. 18 Preparing the washing cycle For coloured clothes and household textiles, you should use COLOUR DETERGENTS, like Ariel Color, which are designed to maintain the original colour of these items, as well as providing excellent cleaning performance. These are all biological detergents. They are particularly suitable for matching and co-ordinated sets of lingerie, bedding or towels. For washing wool and silk, COLOUR DETERGENTS ARE NOT SUITABLE. For wool items, you should use a GENTLE/FINE WASH DETERGENT, such as Dreft, which has been tested and approved by the International Wool Secretariat and carries the "Woolmark". A similar detergent should also be used for silk. To maintain the appearance of your clothes and household textiles and to make them last longer, you should use different types of detergent for different washes, whether for whites, colours or delicates. Although this may require buying two or three different products, you do not need to use any more powder, or liquid, than if you were buying just one. And in which form Not only are these different types of detergent, but they are also available in different forms Powders or Liquids Powders and their liquid equivalent provide similar cleaning properties, although liquids dissolve faster when hand washing and at lower temperature washes. Biological or Non-Biological All Biological detergents contain enzymes. Different types of enzymes assist with the removal of protein, starch and fat-based stains, such as blood, egg, chocolate and gravy. However, some people prefer nonbiological detergents which do not contain enzymes. Low Suds In a front loading automatic washing machine, you should only use a low suds detergent. The majority of detergents are now low suds products. ,,Big Box" or Compact Compared to their traditional "Big Box" equivalents, compacts (or concentrates as they are also known) have an improved performance and environmental profile, as well as requiring a smaller dosage level. 19 Preparing the washing cycle Fabric Conditioners These are ideal for improving "softness". They also reduce static cling on synthetics and make ironing easier. Fabric Conditioners come in three forms: ­ Liquids (regular or concentrated) which work in the final rinse. ­ Sheets for use in the tumble dryer, and ­ Combined Detergent and Fabric Softener Use of detergents and additives Choosing the Right Detergent Always use a low lather powder or liquid. This is important as too much lather prevents the articles from being properly cleansed and may damage the machine. Use of Powder Detergent The washing powder should be placed in the appropriate compartments in the detergent dispenser drawer before starting the programme. Use of Liquid Detergent A liquid detergent can be used in the middle compartment of the dispenser drawer. Start the machine immediately upon placing the liquid in the dispenser drawer. Use the Fabric Conditioners Any liquid additives for softening or dressing the laundry must be poured into the appropriate compartment of the detergent dispenser drawer before starting the programme. The compartment with the symbol w is for softeners and dressing agents; never exceed the MAX, level. When using super concentrated fabric conditioners, please follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. How much detergent and fabric softener? The amount to be used depends on · the load: If the detergent manufacturer does not make any specifications for small loads, use a third less for half loads, and for very small loads only use half of the amount of washing powder recommended for a full load. · the degree of soiling of the washing: For only lightly soiled washing use less washing powder. Follow the instructions of the detergent manufacturer and load. 20 Preparing the washing cycle · on the degree of hardness of the tap water: The harder the water, the higher the dosage! You will find the quantities to use according to water hardness on the detergent packet. Liquid detergent Add liquid detergent using the dispenser provided by the detergent manufacturer. Please follow the instructions on the packaging. Using a water softening agent In hard water areas, the use of a water softening agent can reduce the amount of detergent necessary. See manufacturers recommendations. 21 Run wash cycle Brief instructions A washing cycle consists of the following steps: 0 Set the correct washing program: ­ Set the program and temperature with the program selector. ­ Set any program options required, change the final spin speed/select RINSE HOLD. ­ Set any DELAY TIMER if required. 0 Open the door, put in the washing. 0 Shut the door. 0 Add washing powder/conditioner. 0 Start washing program. After the washing program has finished: Important! If the washing cycle ended with rinse hold, carry out a PUMP OUT, SPIN or SHORT SPIN before opening the door. 0 Open the door, remove the washing. 0 Set the program selector to OFF. Switch off the washing machine. 0 We recommend you unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply when the wash program has finished. 22 Run wash cycle Selecting the washing program See "Program tables" for suitable program, correct temperature and any possible program options for the respective type of washing. 0 Set washing program and temperature: set program selector to the washing program desired with the required temperature. The estimated duration of the program set is shown in minutes on the multidisplay. 3 0 If applicable select program options: · The displays of the program options selected light up. · To change your selection press another button. · To deselect simply press the button again. 0 If required reduce the spin speed for the final spin/ rinse hold: Press the final spin speed/RINSE HOLD button repeatedly until the display of the required spin speed or RINSE HOLD illuminates. With RINSE HOLD the washing stays in the final rinse water, it is not spun. 0 If applicable set the delay timer: press the DELAY TIMER button repeatedly until the time delay required is displayed, for example 12h for a 12 hour delay start of the program. 3 If 19h is displayed and you press the button again the running time of the currently set washing program appears and the delay start is cancelled. If the SOAKING option is selected the delay timer determines the soaking time. (Without delay timer the soaking time is approx. 1 hour.) 23 Run wash cycle Loading the washing 0 Sort the washing according to the type and prepare it correctly. For information about the correct preparation of the washing see "Types of washing and care symbols". 0 Open the door: pull the handle of the door. 0 Load the washing. 3 3 See the "Program tables" for the maximum load. 0 Firmly shut the door. Important! When shutting the door be careful not to catch any pieces of laundry! The fabric and appliance could be damaged. 24 Run wash cycle Adding detergent/fabric softener 0 Open the detergent drawer: reach into the recess under the drawer, pull the drawer out as far as it will go. 0 Add detergent/conditioner. 3 For information about washing powder and fabric softeners see section "Detergents and conditioners". k Prewash agent/soaking agent (for extra programs PRE WASH/SOAKING), or water softening agent if used. l Main detergent in powder form (If you use water softening agent and need compartment k for the prewash/soaking agent, add the water softening agent to the main detergent compartment l.) m Stain remover (only for STAIN action phase) w Liquid conditioners (fabric softener, starch). Important: Do not fill above the MAX mark. When using thick concentrated fabric conditioners and starches we recommend you dilute the concentrate with water to ensure trouble-free dispensing. If using starch powder dissolve according to manufacturers instructions. 0 Push the compartment in completely. 25 Run wash cycle Starting the washing program 0 Check the water tap is open. 0 Start the washing program: Press START/PAUSE button. The washing program will start, or starts after the delay time set has expired. 3 If the DOOR display is flashing red when the START/PAUSE button is pressed, the door is not correctly closed. Firmly close the door and press the START/PAUSE button again. With the delay timer set: With the delay time set the multi-display shows the remaining time, in hours, until the start of the wash program. During this time, you can add washing or change or cancel the delay timer. · Adding washing: press the START/PAUSE button, this enables the door to be opened. Then close the door and press the START/PAUSE button again. · Changing or cancelling the delay timer: press the button repeatedly until the time desired is displayed; if the program running time is displayed (such as 110 ) the washing program will start immediately. Progress of the washing program Before the start the selected program steps are displayed by the program progress display. During the washing program the current program step is shown. The remaining wash time until the end of the program is continuously displayed in minutes. During a washing program the spin speed can still be changed or RINSE HOLD can still be set. No other settings can be changed. With the START/PAUSE button, the washing program can be interrupted at any time and continued by pressing the button again. The washing program cannot be changed during the pause. To change or stop the washing program, turn the program selector to the OFF position. 26 Run wash cycle End of wash cycle/Removing the washing 0 If RINSE HOLD was selected: After a rinse hold, the water has to be pumped out: ­ Either press the START/PAUSE button (the washing is spun in accordance with the program which has just finished; the final spin speed can be changed whilst the washing is being spun using the spin speed button), or ­ turn the program selector to PUMP OUT and press the START/PAUSE button (the water is pumped out without the washing being spun), or ­ turn the program selector to SPIN or SHORT SPIN and press the START/PAUSE button (the washing is spun or spun gently). After this program step has been completed the END lamp is illuminated. Open the door. As soon as the DOOR display is green the door can be opened. Turn the program selector to OFF. Remove the washing. After the program has finished, pull the detergent drawer out a little so that it can dry. Leave the door ajar for a while. This helps to prevent stagnant smells and to preserve the door seal. Close the water tap. We recommend you unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply when the wash program has finished. If the OVERDOSING display lights up it shows that too much washing powder was used in the washing program which has just run. For this reason an extra rinse was carried out. This helps to prevent stagnant smells, and to preserve the door seal. 0 Close the water tap. 0 We recommend you unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply when the wash program has finished. Control panel Important! Do not use household furniture polish or abrasive cleaners to clean the panel and operating parts. 0 Wipe over the operating panel with a damp cloth. Only use warm water. Detergent compartment Now and again the detergent compartment should be cleaned. 0 Pull out the detergent compartment as far as it will go. 0 Remove the detergent compartment by pulling firmly. 0 Remove the suction cap. Suction cap 0 Clean the suction cap under running water. 0 Clean the separate compartments with warm water. A bottle brush is a useful aid. 0 Push on the suction cap firmly so that it is sitting tightly. 0 Clean the inside of the detergent compartment with a brush. 0 Insert the detergent compartment into the guides and push it in. 30 Maintenance and Cleaning Washing machine drum The washing machine drum is made from rust-free stainless steel. Any objects left in the laundry which are likely to rust can stain the drum. Important! Do not clean the stainless steel drum with descaling agents containing acids, scouring agents containing chlorine or iron or steel wool. 0 Remove rust stains on the drum with a stainless steel cleaning agent. Door 0 Regularly check if there are deposits or foreign bodies in the rubber seal behind the door and remove them. Precautionary measures in the event of a risk of frost If the washing machine is located where temperatures may fall below 0 °C the following precautions must be taken: 0 Turn off water taps 0 Empty the appliance (see "Carrying out an emergency emptying") 0 Disconnect the inlet hose. 3 31 Troubleshooting 3 The whistling noise when spinning may be different to your prevous washing machine which is due to the modern drive system. Certain problems etc. If you call out an engineer and the fault is listed here, a charge is levied even if the appliance is in guarantee. If the error code (1 or (2 is displayed, check the troubleshooting guide below before calling an engineer. Display (1: see "No water flows in". Display (2: see "Washing has not been spun sufficiently, ..." in the fault finding table below. After eliminating the error, press the START/PAUSE button. If the error code is displayed again, please contact your local AEG Service Force Centre. Fault Possible cause The mains plug is not connected. The fuse of the household electrical system is faulty. Only use as much as the washing powder manufacturer recommends. Tighten the inlet hose connections. Check the inlet hose and if necessary replace it. Tighten cover by turning clockwise. Abort the program, remove the washing caught in the door, start a new program. The suds in the main wash cycle create too much foam. Water is leaking out from under the washing machine. If there are still grey stains on the washing · Washing soiled with ointments, grease or oils was washed with insufficient washing powder. · The temperature selected for the wash was too low. · A frequent cause is that fabric softener especially a concentrated one has come into contact with the washing. Wash out these types of stains as fast as possible and use the fabric softener carefully. If after the final rinse foam is still visible · Modern washing powders can still cause foam in the final rinse cycle. The washing is nevertheless sufficiently rinsed. If there are white residues on the washing · These are insoluble contents of modern washing powders. They are not the result of an insufficient rinse. Shake out the washing or brush it off. Turn the washing inside out before washing it. Review your choice of powder, possibly use liquid detergents. Carrying out an emergency emptying 1 Warning! Isolate the washing machine from the mains supply before the emergency emptying! If the washing machine no longer pumps out the water an emergency emptying must be carried out. Warning! The water, which flows out of the emergency emptying hose can be hot. First allow the water to cool down before emergency emptying! 0 Put down a flat container to catch the water draining out. 35 Troubleshooting 0 Pull down the flap in the left corner of the base strip and remove it. 0 Release the emergency emptying hose from its holder. 0 Pull the emergency emptying hose out a little. 0 Place a container underneath to catch the water. 0 Release the plug of the emergency emptying hose by turning it anticlockwise and pull it out. The water will drain out. Depending on the amount of water, it may be necessary to empty the container catching the water several times. To do this, temporarily close the emergency emptying hose again with the plug. When the water has drained out completely: 0 Push and twist the plug firmly back into the emergency emptying hose. 0 Push the emergency emptying hose back in a little and let it catch on to the holder. 0 Replace the flap in the base plate and close it. 3 When the washing machine is completely empty, the ÖKO lock can no longer function correctly. Therefore before the next wash, pour in approx 1 litre water (pour it in through the washing powder compartment). Cleaning the drain pump 1 Warning! Switch off the washing machine and pull the plug out of the socket before cleaning the drain pump! 0 First carry out an emergency emptying (see section "Carrying out an emergency emptying"). 36 Troubleshooting 0 Place a towel on the floor in front of the cover of the drain pump. Surplus water may flow out. 0 Unscrew the cover of the drain pump by twisting it anti-clockwise and pull it out. 0 Remove any foreign bodies which may be in the pump housing. 0 Check whether the impeller of the pump can be turned. (It is normal for the pump to turn in steps.) If the impeller cannot be turned at all please contact your local AEG Service Force Centre. 0 Replace the cover (insert the ridges on the cover into the guiding slots) and screw on tightly in a clockwise direction. 0 Close the emergency emptying hose, push it in and twist. 0 Close the flap. Unlocking the door in an emergency If the door cannot be opened (e.g. due to a faulty door lock or due to a power cut during the washing program), it can be opened using the emergency unlock feature. 0 If water can be seen in the window of the door first carry out an emergency emptying (see section "Carrying out an emergency emptying"). 0 Turn the knob anti-clockwise with the help of a coin or a screwdriver. 0 Open the door by pulling on the door handle. Knob 37 Troubleshooting Selecting suds cooling or suds cooling and an extra rinse The washing machine is on a very economical water consumption setting. For people who suffer from a washing powder allergy, it may be helpful to rinse with extra water (extra rinse cycle). This can be set with the extra water switch: Position 1: Suds cooling The suds are cooled down before being pumped out at the end of the main wash (by adding cold water). This reduces thermal shock to fabrics, helping to prevent creasing. (This setting is only effective for COTTONS/LINEN at a temperature of above 40 °C.) Position 2: Suds cooling and extra rinse The water is cooled down as for position 1, in addition to this (except for WOOLLENS) an extra rinse cycle is carried out. On delivery of the machine the extra water switch is in the 0 position. 3 Due to the process of cooling down the suds or an extra rinse cycle, the water consumption and wash time is increased.
