Opening the cover or other attempts by the user to service this unit may result in serious injury or death from electrical shock, and may increase the risk of fire. 2 A P E X D I G I TA L A DV- 3 8 5 0 Precautions Notes on handling · When shipping the Player, the original shipping carton and packing materials come in handy. For maximum protection, repack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory. · Do not use volatile liquids, such as insect spray, near the player. Do not leave rubber or plastic products in contact with the Player for a long time. They will leave marks on the finish. · The top and rear panels of the Player may become warm after a long period of use. This is not a malfunction. · When the Player is not in use, be sure to remove the disc and turn off the power. · If you do not use the Player for a long period, the unit may not function properly in the future. Turn on and use the player occasionally. Notes on locating · Place the player on a level surface. Do not use is on a shaky or unstable surface such as a wobbling table or inclined stand. The loaded disc may come off the proper position and cause damage to the player. · When you place this player near a TV or radio, the playback picture may become poor and the sound may be distorted. In this case, place the player away from the TV or radio. Notes on cleaning Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. · For stubborn dirt, soak the cloth in a weak detergent solution, wring well and wipe. Use a dry cloth to wipe it dry. Do not use any type of solvent, such as thinner and gasoline, as they may damage the surface of the player. · If you use a chemical saturated cloth to clean the unit, follow that product's instructions. To obtain a clear picture The player is a high tech, precision device. If the optical pick-up lens and disc drive parts are dirty or worn down, the picture quality becomes poor. To obtain a clear picture, we recommend regular inspection and maintenance (cleaning or parts replacement) every 1,000 hours of use depending on the operating environment. For details, contact your nearest dealer. Notes on moisture condensation Moisture condensation damages the player. Please read the following carefully. Moisture condensation occurs, for example, when you pour a cold drink into a glass on a warm day. Drops of water form on the outside of the glass. In the same way, moisture may condense on the optical pick-up lens inside this unit, one of the most crucial internal parts of the player. Moisture condensation occurs during the following cases. · When you bring the player directly from a cold place to a warm place. · When you use the player in a room where you just turned on the heater, or a place where the cold wind from the air conditioner directly hits the unit. · In summer, when you use the player in a hot and humid place just after you move the unit from an air-conditioned room. · When you use the player in a humid place. Do not use the player when moisture condensation may occur. If you use the player in such a situation, it may damage discs and internal parts. Remove the disc, connect the power cord of the player to the wall outlet, turn on the player, and leave it for two or three hours, the player will have warmed up and evaporated any moisture. Keep the player connected to the wall outlet and moisture condensation will seldom occur. HANDLING DISCS · Do not touch the playback side of the disc. · Do not attach paper or tape to discs. NOTE: APEX DIGITAL Inc. shall not be responsible for damage that may occur to a disc from being operated in the player. CLEANING DISCS · Fingerprints and dirt on the disc cause picture and sound deterioration. Wipe the disc from the center outward with a soft cloth. Always keep the disc clean. · If you cannot wipe off the dirt off, wipe the disc lightly with a slightly moistened soft cloth and finish with a dry cloth. · Do not use any type of solvent such as a thinner, benzine, commercially available cleaners or anti-static spray for vinyl LP's. Insert batteries (AAA size). Make sure to match the + and - on the batteries to the marks inside the battery compartment. Close the cover. OPERATING WITH THE REMOTE CONTROL Operating player with the remote control. The remote control must point at the remote sensor in order for the remote to function correctly. Distance: Maximum of 7 m from the front of the remote sensor. Angle: Approximately 30º from each direction. *Do not place the remote control under intense light source such as direct sunlight. 30° 30° ! BATTERIES INCORRECT USE OF BATTERIES MIGHT CAUSE THEM TO LEAK, CORRODE OR EXPLODE. · Do not place the batteries in the wrong direction. · It is dangerous to charge, heat, open, or short-circuit the batteries. · Do not leave dead batteries or mix new with old batteries in the remote control. · When not using the remote control for a long duration of time, remove the batteries. Connecting With TV Set TV to Channel 3 HOW TO CONNECT WITH RF CABLE OR AV CABLE 1 Connect antenna cable to the "ANT.IN" jack on rear panel of player. 2 Connect TV to the combo player by connecting the "RF OUT" jack with "ANT.IN" jack of the TV with RF cable. 3 Connect AV OUT jacks from VCR&DVD PLAYER to AV IN jacks of a stereo TV with RCA cables (if TV supports this connection. 6 A P E X D I G I TA l A DV- 3 8 5 0 Connecting With Other Video Equipment HOW TO CONNECT To connect another video playback unit such as second vcr or a camcorder, connect the AV output from the device to AV input on the rear or front panel of the VCR/DVD player using RCA cables. Connecting TV With S-VIDEO/Component Jack, AMP With Digital Audio Out jack How to Connect (DVD only) Connect COAXIAL or OPTICAL to AMP of Dolby Digital. Progressive Scan WHAT IS PROGRESSIVE SCAN? With the introduction of Digital/High-Definition TV, televisions can scan viewable information at double the frequency of standard NTSC televisions. This provides for greater picture clarity and detail. This player provides the delivery of images to these newer televisions with greater detail and film like quality. Connect the player to your HDTV ready television using the component video inputs/outputs. HOW TO SETUP THE VIDEO SCAN MODE? Connect this Player with Y, Pr and Pb, if your TV has Progressive Scan & Component Video inputs commonly found on HDTV sets. Press I/P button on remote control unit to switch between Interlace & Progressive Scan mode. If the playback picture is partially noisy, adjust with TRACKING +/- button on front panel. 4 To stop, press button. · To pause, press button in playback mode. 5 To playback forward fast or to reverse, press or button, respectively. · Press EJECT button on the front panel or OPEN/CLOSE button on remote control to remove the tape 6 To monitor Video 1, Video 2, or TV, press INPUT SEL button on remote control. Recording To Record With VCR 1 Press POWER button to power on. · Press DVD/VCR button toselect VCR mode. · Power on TV and select Ch3, or select AV input. 2 Insert a tape for recording. · Insert a tape with recording tab. · Press TV/VCR button to enable TV channels. 3 With CH+/- and NUMBER buttons, select the desired broadcasting channel or external input unit to record. 4 Select the desired speed (SP or SLP) with SPEED button. 5 Press REC button. 6 Press button to pause recording, then press again to resume. ·If the pause status continues for five minutes, the record mode will be cancelled automatically. 7 To stop recording, press button. switch into DVD mode and press button. TO ENJOY DVD DURING RECORDING To playback DVD during recording with video, insert a DVD disc. · Place the desired DVD disc on DVD tray, press DVD button to TO COPY FROM DVD TO VIDEOTAPE Press DVD/VCR button to select DVD mode. 1 Insert the desired DVD disc. · A DVD disc with copy protection encoding will not allow recording 2 Insert a tape for recording. 3 Press REC button. 4 To stop copy, press VCR button and then press button. · If not, DVD plays again and video continues to copy. ONE TOUCH TIMER RECORDING(OTR) One-Touch Recording(OTR) allows you to record in 30minute increments up to 4 hours at the touch of a button. 1 Start Recording Follow the instructions on "Recording". 2 Activate OTR While in Record mode, press the REC button again to activate One-Touch Recording(OTR). 8 A P E X D I G I TA L 3 Add Recording Time Continue pressing REC to add recording time in 30 minute increments up to 4 hours. ·The VCR&DVD PLAYER stops recording automatically when the time has elapsed. 4 Press button to stop recording mode. A DV3 8 5 0 Search Function SEARCH COUNTER ZERO There are 4 types of search modes you may select to find a segment on your tape. · Press DVD/VCR button to select VCR mode. 1 Press the SETUP button on the remote control. 2. Press the button to select the "Search", and press ENTER button. 3. Press ENTER button at "Go To Zero Search" to start. · As soon as the counter searches 0:00:00 , the tape will play automatically. SEARCH COUNTER ·Press DVD/VCR button to select VCR mode. 1 Press the SETUP button on the remote control. 2. Press the button to select the "Search", and press ENTER button. 3. Press the button to select the "Counter Search", and press ENTER button. 4. Enter the desired time and press ENTER button. · The counter appears on screen and the LED. 4. If your search is backward direction, highlight "Index Search(-)" Index searching motion, then press ENTER button. · The index signal is recorded on the tape automatically when the recording is started. You can view a recording at a specific start point. SEARCH INDEX FORWARD/BACKWARD · Press DVD/VCR button select VCR mode. 1 Press the SETUP button on the remote control. 2. Press the button to select the "Search", and press ENTER button. 3. If your search is forward direction, highlight "Index Search(+)" Index searching motion, then press ENTER button. SEARCH INDEX NUMBER · Press DVD/ VCR button to select VCR mode 1 Press the SETUP button on the remote control. 2. Press the button to select the "Search", and press ENTER button. 3. AFF stands for Active Full-screen Function. It allows you to fill the television screen viewing area when using a wide screen formatted DVD. Press the AFF button on your remote control, as this will eliminate black bars on the top & bottom of the TV screen when viewing movies with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and minimize (but not eliminate) black bars on movies with a wider aspect ratio (2.35:1). Press the POWER button on the front panel. Press DVD button of remote control to select DVD mode. 2. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button. This will open the disc tray. 3. Place the disc on the disc tray. Be sure the graphics side is up and playback side is faced down. 4. Press the button. NOTICE: · A disc may be damaged if not correctly placed on the guides in the disc tray. This may also cause the combo player to malfunction. · The menu screen will appear automatically or you may access the menu screen by pressing the TITLE button. · Moving the combo player during playback may cause damage to the disc as well as the player. · To open and close the disc tray, you should only use the OPEN/CLOSE button on the remote control or combo player. FOR A HIGHER QUALITY PICTURE The DVD discs produce a high resolution picture with abundance of information. This may cause some picture noise on the TV during playback. The noise will vary depending on the TV used with the combo player. To control picture noise, reduce the sharpness adjustment on your TV when viewing DVD discs. ABOUT DVD, CD DVD, CD icons will appear depending on the disc being played back. DVD: DVD video discs CD: Audio CDs HOW TO START PLAYBACK FROM THE MENU SCREEN 1. Be aware that the on-screen setup menu may damage your TV by permanently burning that image onto the screen. To avoid this, press the STOP button at the completion of each movie. You may also decide to setup the SCREEN SAVER. ADVANCED PLAYBACK The combo player allows you to playback discs at various speeds. TV SCREEN 2x 2x 4x 4x 8x 8x 16x 16x NOTICE: · The combo player may not playback sound during scan reverse or forward playback of DVD video discs. The combo player will play sound during fast forward or fast reverse playback of audio CDs. · The speeds may vary slightly from disc to disc and the 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x speeds are only approximate speeds. PLAYING AT 2X, 4X, 8X, OR 16X THE NORMAL SPEED You can play back a disc at 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x the normal speed. Press the REW or FF button during playback. The playback speed becomes 2x the normal speed. The playback speed changes each time you press the REW or FF button. REW: Fast reverse FF: Fast forward Press to resume normal playback. PLAYING IN SLOW-MOTION A disc can be played back in slow-motion. Press the Press or button during pause. button to resume normal playback. THE TITLES ARE SUB-DIVIDED INTO CHAPTERS. MOREOVER, AUDIO CD AND MP3 CD ARE DIVIDED INTO TRACKS. YOU CAN CONVENIENTLY LOCATE ANY SPECIFIC TITLE, CHAPTER, OR TRACK WITH THIS COMBO PLAYER. Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 TITLE 1 DVD Video Disc TITLE 2 Audio CD LOCATING A TITLE USING THE TITLE MENU Locate a specific title using the title menu function, provided a DVD video disc contains a title menu. 1. Press the TITLE button On the TV screen, the title menu will appear. 2. Press the buttons to select the title you want You can also directly locate a specific title by pressing its assigned number with the number buttons. 3. LOCATING A SPECIFIC CHAPTER OR TRACK This combo player allows you to locate consecutive chapters or tracks. How to locate preceding chapters or tracks · When you press the SKIP button, the combo player starts playback from the beginning of the preceeding chapter or track. On certain discs the titles may not display the sub-divided chapters. 3. Move the cursor to select Audio, Subtitle, Angle, TT Time, CH Time, Repeat, Time Disp.. NOTICE · The displays may vary depending on the discs. · You may experience a difference in TITLE or MENU display. LOCATING A TITLE You may also locate a specific title by directly selecting a title number. 1. Press SEARCH button during playback. The menu will appear. 2. Press direction buttons and numbers to select the title and chapter you want. (TITLE REPEAT, CHAPTER/TRACK REPEAT, A-B REPEAT). HOW TO REPEAT A TITLE, CHAPTER, OR TRACK 1. select the title, chapter, or track you want to repeat. 2. Press the REPEAT button. The repeat mode changes each time you press the REPEAT button. Chapter Repeats the same chapter. HOW TO REPEAT A SPECIFIC SEGMENT 1. Press the A-B RPT button at the beginning of the segment in which you want to repeat playback. (point A) 2. Press the A-B RPT button again at the end of the segment (point B). The combo player will automatically return to point A and start to repeat playback of the selected segment (A-B). 3. Press the A-B RPT button to cancel the A-B repeat function. The combo player will resume to normal playback. A Title Repeats the same title. All Repeats the disc. No repeats. AB DVD video disc NOTICE: · Depending on the disc, you may experience a difference between point A and the location where playback actually resumes. · Be aware that some discs will not respond to the A-B repeat function. Playing in Random Order THIS COMBO PLAYER ALLOWS YOU TO PLAYBACK TITLES, CHAPTERS WITHIN A TITLE, OR TRACKS IN RANDOM ORDER. (RANDOM PLAYBACK) PLAYING TITLES IN RANDOM ORDER This combo player will automatically choose the titles in a DVD video disc and play them back randomly. 1. Press the SHUFFLE button . The combo player will now start random playback. 2. Press the SHUFFLE button again during random playback to resume normal playback. NOTICE: · The combo player will go to another chapter or track and start playback if you press the SKIP button during random playback. Zooming a Picture On DVD ZOOMING A PICTURE This combo player allows you to zoom into a picture as well as shift the zoom point. 2x 3x 4x Press ZOOM during playback. The combo player magnifiles in the center of the picture. If you press during zoom playback, the zoom point will shift. 1/2 1/3 1/4 Press ZOOM repeatedly during zoom playback until the player resumes normal playback. Selecting Subtitles THIS COMBO PLAYER ALLOWS YOU TO DISPLAY THE SUBTITLES FROM THOSE INCLUDED ON THE DISC, ON TO YOUR TV SCREEN. HOW TO DISPLAY SUBTITLES You have the option to select a preferred subtitle from those included on the DVD video disc. Press the SUB-T button during playback. Press the SUB-T during playback until SUBTITLE OFF appears.
