ASUS P4B533-E motherboard user guide 1-1 1.3 Special features 1.3.1 Product highlights Latest processor technology The P4B533-E motherboard supports the latest Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor via a 478-pin surface mount ZIF socket. The Pentium 4 processor with 512KB L2 cache on 0.13 micron process features the Intel® NetBurstTM microarchitecture that includes hyper-pipelined technology, a rapid execution engine, a 533MHz system bus, and an execution trace cache to offer a significant increase in performance. See page 2-4 for more information. DDR memory support Employing the Double Data Rate (DDR) memory technology, the P4B533-E motherboard supports up to 2GB of system memory using PC2100/1600 DDR DIMMs. The ultra-fast 266MHz memory bus doubles the speed of the PC133 SDRAM to deliver the required bandwidth for the latest 3D graphics, multimedia, and Internet applications. See page 2-10. USB 2.0 technology The motherboard implements the new Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 specification, extending the connection speed from 12 Mbps on USB 1.1 to a fast 480 Mbps on USB 2.0. The higher bandwidth of USB 2.0 allows connection of devices such as high resolution video conferencing cameras, next generation scanners and printers, and fast storage units. USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 1.1. See page 2-31. Digital audio interface (on audio models only) A digital audio connector is onboard to accommodate the bundled Sony/ Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) In/Out module, which supports coaxial interfaces. Experience 5.1-channel surround sound and enhanced 3D audio while playing DVDs and computer games. See page 2-34. RAID 0/RAID 1 support (on RAID models only) The motherboard includes the Promise® chip PDC20276 and two ATA133 interfaces to support Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) configuration. This feature supports Ultra ATA/133 drives, and is backward compatible with Ultra ATA/100/66/33 drives. The RAID controller onboard supports RAID 0 and RAID 1 configurations. See pages 2-27 and 5-26. 1-2 Chapter 1: Product introduction RAID 0 (called data striping) optimizes two identical hard disk drives to read and write data in parallel, interleaved stacks. Two hard disks perform the same work as a single drive but at a sustained data transfer rate, double that of a single disk alone, thus improving data access and storage. RAID 1 (called data mirroring) copies and maintains an identical image of data from one drive to a second drive. If one drive fails, the disk array management software directs all applications to the surviving drive as it contains a complete copy of the data in the other drive. This RAID configuration provides data protection and increases fault tolerance to the entire system. Onboard IEEE-1394 (on 1394 models only) The NEC 1394 controller PD72874GC and two IEEE 1394 interfaces are onboard to support 400Mbps data transfers through the bundled 1394 module. See page 2-35. Onboard LAN (on LAN models only) The Intel 82562ET LAN PHY onboard works with the integrated MAC in the South Bridge (ICH4) to fully support 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet networking. ASUS EZ PlugTM This patented ASUS technology lets you use your existing power supply rather than buying a new ATX 12V power supply. The ASUS EZ PlugTM is a 4-pin auxiliary +12V connector mounted on the motherboard that connects a regular 4-pin device power connector from the power supply. This connector is necessary to provide the additional power required by the P4 CPU. See page 2-29. ASUS P4B533-E motherboard user guide 1-3 ASUS POST ReporterTM P4B533-E offers a new exciting feature called the ASUS POST ReporterTM to provide friendly voice messages and alerts during the Power-On SelfTests (POST). Through the system's internal speaker, or an added external speaker, you will hear the messages informing you of the system boot status and causes of boot errors, if any. The bundled Winbond Voice Editor software allows you to customize the voice messages, and provides multi-language support. See details on pages 3-2 and 5-20. ASUS MyLogo2TM This new feature present in the P4B533-E motherboard allows you to personalize and add style to your system with customizable boot logos. See details on page 5-10. ASUS Multi-language BIOS The multi-language BIOS allows you to select the language of your choice from the available options. The localized BIOS menus allow you to configure easier and faster. Visit the ASUS website for the supported languages. See page 4-11 on how to select a language. ASUS EZ Flash BIOS With the ASUS EZ Flash, you can easily update the system BIOS even before loading the operating system. No need to use a DOS-based utility or boot from a floppy disk. See details on page 4-1. ASUS Q-Fan feature The ASUS Q-Fan technology smartly adjusts the fan speeds according to the system loading to ensure quiet, cool, and efficient operation. See details on page 4-32. 1-4 Chapter 1: Product introduction 1.3.2 Value-added solutions Overclocking · adjustable CPU frequency multiple in BIOS using the ASUS JumperFreeTM solution · adjustable FSB/DDR ratio · fixed AGP/PCI frequencies · adjustable CPU, DDR, and AGP voltages · Stepless Frequency Selection (SFS) for fine-tuning system bus frequency from 100MHz up to 200MHz at 1MHz increments · optimized system performance through BIOS built-in Turbo mode Concurrent PCI This feature allows multiple PCI transfers from PCI master buses to the memory and processor. Temperature, fan, and voltage monitoring The CPU temperature is monitored by the ASUS ASIC through the CPU's internal diode to prevent overheating and damage. The system fan rotations per minute (RPM) is monitored for timely failure detection. The system voltage levels are monitored to ensure stable supply of current for critical components. Dual function power switch While the system is ON, pressing the power switch for less than 4 seconds puts the system to sleep mode or to soft-off mode, depending on the BIOS setting. Pressing the power switch for more than 4 seconds lets the system enter the soft-off mode regardless of the BIOS setting. ACPI ready The Advanced Configuration power Interface (ACPI) provides more energy saving features for operating systems that support OS Direct Power Management (OSPM). Auto fan off The system fans power off automatically when the system is in sleep mode. This feature reduces both power consumption and system noise. Chassis intrusion detection The motherboard supports chassis intrusion monitoring through the ASUS ASIC. A chassis intrusion event is retained in the system memory for more protection.
