Coiled handset cord Base unit Handset 1 Before you begin Parts list Your box should include: Installation Table/desk installation Installation 2 1. Install batteries to provide power for the lighted dial pad. Press the battery cover tab and remove the cover. Install four new alkaline AA batteries (not included). Be sure to follow the polarity guide in the battery compartment. Replace the cover. NOTE: The batteries are needed for the lighted dial pad to work. Replace the batteries when the lighted dial pad is dim or unlit in a dark room. Replace the batteries only with four new alkaline AA batteries. Tone/pulse switch 3. Connect the handset to the telephone. Plug the coiled cord into the handset jack on the left side of the base unit. Plug the other end of the coiled cord into the handset, then hang up. 4. Connect the long line cord to the telephone and a modular wall jack. Telephone line cord Modular telephone wall jack 3 Installation 2. Set the tone/pulse switch. If you have touch tone service, set the switch to TT (tone). If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, set the switch to DP (pulse). Installation 4 5. Check for dial tone. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. If you cannot hear a dial tone, slide the VOLUME switch to the right. If you still do not hear a dial tone, see the In case of difficulty section beginning on page 15 of this user's manual. Replace the batteries only with four new alkaline AA batteries. 5 Installation 1. Install batteries to provide power for the lighted dial pad. Press the battery cover tab and remove the cover. If you have touch tone service, set the switch to TT (tone). If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, set the switch to DP (pulse). 3. Connect the short line cord to the telephone. Plug the line cord into the jack labeled TELEPHONE LINE and thread the cord through the tabs under the phone as shown. Modular telephone wall jack Tone/pulse switch Telephone line cord 4. Reverse the handset tab. This tab holds the handset when you hang up. Hold down the switchhook, and slide the tab up and out of its slot. Turn the tab so that the end with the hook is up. Then hold down the switchhook while you insert the tab back into its slot. Switchhook Handset tab 6 Make sure the cord snaps firmly into place. Place the phone on the wall jack mounting studs and pull down until it is held securely. 7. Check for dial tone. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. If you cannot hear a dial tone, slide the VOLUME switch to the right. If you still do not hear a dial tone, see the In case of difficulty section beginning on page 15 of this user's manual. 7 Installation 5. Connect the handset to the telephone. Plug the coiled cord into the handset jack on the left side of the base unit. Plug the other end of the coiled cord into the handset, then hang up. 6. Connect the line cord to a modular wall jack and mount the phone on the wall jack as shown. Telephone operation Make a call Lift the handset. When you hear a dial tone, dial using the dial pad or memory buttons. Ringing indicator Telephone operation Answer a call When you hear the phone ring and the ringing indicator turns on, you have an incoming call. Lift the handset to answer the call. Ringing indicator The ringing indicator is lit when you have an incoming call. It is off when the phone is not ringing. End a call Hang up the handset. 8 NOTE: Redial memory can store up to 32 digits. If the last number dialed was longer than 32 digits, nothing will be stored. If you press any numbers while using the redial feature those new numbers will be stored in redial and replace the previous one. Erase redial You can erase the redial memory for privacy. Lift the handset. Press PROG then press REDIAL/PAUSE and hang up. -- OR -- Lift the handset. Press any key, then hang up. Flash Press FLASH to access call waiting or any other phone company subscriber services as described by your telephone service provider. 9 Telephone operation The last number dialed at this phone is stored in redial memory. To dial that number, lift the handset and listen for the dial tone, then press REDIAL/PAUSE. The number is dialed automatically. Redial Telephone operation If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, you can change from dial pulse to touch tone dialing during a call by pressing TONE *. All keys pressed after this will send touch tone signals. The phone returns to dial pulse when you hang up. Temporary tone dialing Slide the VOLUME control on the phone to adjust the volume of what you hear through the handset. Slide the control left to decrease volume or right to increase volume. Handset volume Use the RINGER switch on the right side of the phone to set the ringer volume to OFF, LOW, MED or HIGH. If you set the switch to OFF, this phone will not ring when you have an incoming call. This phone has an extra loud ringer. Set the switch to HIGH, if you want to use the extra loud ringer volume. Ringer volume AUDIO ASSISTTM Some voices will sound louder and clearer when you press AUDIO ASSIST while you are on a call. Press AUDIO ASSIST again to turn the feature off. This feature automatically turns off when you hang up. You must press AUDIO ASSIST every time you want to use this feature. 10 Telephone memory This telephone can store 13 telephone numbers, each up to 16 digits long. You can dial numbers stored in memory by pressing one or two buttons. Directory card Lift the plastic cover off the directory card to write the numbers (or names) stored in telephone memory on the card. Then replace the cover. Store a number in memory 1. Lift the handset. 2. Press and release PROG. 3. Dial the telephone number (up to 16 digits). 4. Press and release PROG. 5. Press the memory location where you want to store the number ( , or for one-touch dialing, or 0 - 9 for two-touch dialing). 6. Replace the handset. NOTE: With the handset lifted, you have limited time to store a number. If you take too much time, you may hear a recorded message from your phone company. 11 Telephone memory Store a pause in a memory number Telephone memory Press and release REDIAL/PAUSE once to store a three to four second pause in the dialing sequence. Each additional press will add another three to four second pause. NOTE: Each three to four second pause counts as one digit when storing numbers in telephone memory. Dial a number in one-touch memory To dial a number stored in memory locations , or : 1. Lift the handset and wait for a dial tone. 2. Press the memory button ( , or ) where the number is stored. The number is dialed automatically. To dial a number stored in a two-touch memory location ( 0 - 9 ): 1. Lift the handset and wait for a dial tone. 2. Press and release MEM, then press the memory button ( 0 - 9 ) where the number is stored. The number is dialed automatically. Dial a number in two-touch memory Erase a memory number To erase a memory location, store a different telephone number in the same location. 12 General product care To keep your phone working and looking good, follow these guidelines: · Avoid putting it near heating appliances and devices that generate electrical noise (for example, motors or fluorescent lamps). · DO NOT expose it to direct sunlight or moisture. · Avoid dropping the phone and/or other rough treatment. · Clean with a soft cloth. · Never use a strong cleaning agent or abrasive powder because this will damage the finish. · Retain the original packaging in case you need to ship it at a later date. 13 General product care Technical specifications REN Power 1.3B Four AA batteries are required for backlighting. Telephone operation Problem No dial tone Solution · Make sure all plugs are connected properly. Inspect the line cord connections at the modular jack and at the telephone. Also inspect the coiled handset cord connections at both ends. · Unplug the telephone and connect it to another modular jack. If it still does not work, and other telephones in your home are working, the problem is with this telephone. Problem Telephone does not ring Solution · Make sure the RINGER switch is not set to OFF. · If there are several other telephones on the same line, try disconnecting some of the other telephones. Having too many telephones connected can also create problems such as low ringer volume or impaired sound quality during calls. 15 In case of difficulty To purchase accessories or replacement parts, please contact customer service through the above website or telephone number. Telephone operation Problem In case of difficulty Lighted dial pad is dim or does not work Solution · Make sure you have installed four fully charged AA batteries (not included) following the polarity guide in the battery compartment. (See Installation beginning on page 2 of this user's manual for details.) · You may not be able to tell that the dial pad is lit unless the room is dark. · In order to save the batteries, the lighted dial pad lights for a few seconds every time you lift the handset or press a button, and then goes out. Telephone memory Problem Difficulty storing numbers in memory Memory numbers are lost Solution · Make sure you are pressing the correct sequence of buttons for storing numbers. · Make sure the line cord is connected, this phone retains numbers stored in memory for about thirty minutes if the line cord is disconnected.
