Dino-MITETM v1.0 User's Instructional Guide 1.0 INTRODUCTION: Dino-MITE was created as a sort of bridge for the user wishing to dig into the lower-level functionality of Pleo. Not to say that this program allows direct access to low level functions, rather it gives the user a visual layout of what is potentially accessible through the COMM port. Dino-MITE offers many of the same diagnostic functions used by the UGOBE development staff. These features make troubleshooting code, manipulating Pleo in ways previously unintended, and shadowing resources (to name a few) more feasible to the user. For the beginner, it can be fun just to see how Pleo ticks. Those who readily create PAWN scripts or use MySkit may find Dino-MITE to be the perfect addition to their developmental arsenal. Depending on the LifeOS firmware version running on your Pleo, some features may respond differently than described within these pages. There is a liberal amount of function Dino-MITE can grant you. Although we've done our best to shield and/or warn you of some of the most hazardous, there are plenty of features that can be quite dangerous if misused. Please exercise caution. - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. 2.0 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: *Estimated - Pentium® PC running Windows® 98TM* - 128Meg RAM* - 3Meg of HD space (10Meg if including "Static" folder and documentation) - USB cable compatible with Pleo - UGOBE Life Forms Pleo running LifeOS 1.0 1.1 firmware - UGOBE approved device drivers - 64Meg or greater SD Card (for some features) 3.0 GETTING STARTED: - Uninstall any previous versions of Dino-MITE that may be on your PC using "Add/Remove Programs" located in the Windows Control Panel. - Install Dino-MITE by double-clicking "setup.exe". - Follow the installation instructions until setupis complete. - Plug one end of the USB cable into PleoTM. - Power on Pleo. - Plug opposing end of USB cable into PC. - Install ugobe.inf or current Pleo USB driver if necessary. Visit http://www.pleoworld.com for the most up to date driver. - Open "Device Manager" in windows and locate the COMM port Pleo is connected to and write it down. NOTE: This software only supports those COMM por whose values ts are less than 17. Free up ports until a compatible port becomes available. - Locate the folder where Dino-MITE was installed and click "Dino-MITE.exe", or in the Start menu locate "BAUER Independents" and click "Dino-MITE". - If this is the first time Dino-MITE has run, you must enter the registration code that came with this software. Also located here are our Terms and Conditions for use. Read it thoroughly! If you agree with the terms click "I AGREE", otherwise click "Cancel" and discontinue use of this software. - Following the registration, you will be askedto enter the name you have chosen for your Pleo and his serial number (located under his front, right foot). If you have more than one Pleo simply enter the name of the one you designate as the "dominant". Don't worry, you can change Pleo's name at a later time following the initialization. Click OK to continue. - Once the splash screen has popped up press any key to continue . - In the "Communication" window, you can click the Refresh button to populate the COMM Port list box with all the currently available Ports on your machine, or just... - Select the proper COMM port from the drop-down list. - The baud rate should not need to be changed, leave it setat "115200,n,8,1". 3 ©2008 BAUER Independents Ltd. Dino-MITETM v1.0 User's Instructional Guide - Click "Open Port". - If a successful connection was made, the Red Dino Indicator will turn green. - WARNING: Pleo must be disconnected in a specific manor. Refer to section 5.41 on page 5. 4.0 STATIC SCRIPT SD CARD PREP: - Depending on the LifeOS version Pleo is running, i is recommended that either the t "pleo.urf" or "pleo1.urf" file located in the "Static" folder in Dino-MITE's program folder, be copied onto an SD Card. The Static script will keep Pleo in a motionless state; allowing you to more-easily manipulate him without his own embedded personality, motions, sensor triggers, or filters from interfering with some of the commands. The commands that will most benefit its use will be discussed later, but it's a good idea to have Pleo running it while you familiarize yourself with Dino-MITE. NOTE: Pleo's running LifeOS 1.1 will automatically choose "pleo1.urf", and older 1.0 through 1.02 will choose the "pleo.urf" file. - To use the "Static Script": - Be sure Pleo was properly disconnected from Dino -MITE and powered off. - Insert the SD Card containing the .urf file that was copied over from the "Static" folder. - Power Pleo back on. Somewhere within 30 seconds Pleo will transition into his neutral pose if he's not already there. Pleo will remain in this catatonic state until the card is removed, or he is manually manipulated using Dino-MITE. 5.0 USING DINO-MITE: - Dino-MITE is set up as a multi document interface. Meaning, there is one main window, the "parent window", which contains all the other windows. These other windows are known as the parent's "children". The children can be opened, closed and moved aro und individually within the parent window. 5.1 MENU The menu is located at the top of the parent window. Shortcuts aremade visible by pressing the "Alt" key. Then, by typing the underlined character in the menu's name, or by using arrow keys, you can navigate through the menu. Press "Enter" on the keyboard, or click your mouse button to make the selection. - File - Exit program alternative. - View - Opens associated windows and modules. - Syntax - Selecting a command from the list will build syntax structures for later execution in the Terminal Window. - Window - Gives a list of currently open (including minimized or otherwise hidden) windows. Selecting a window name from the list will give the focus to that window as it brings it into view. - Help - Displays the Help and About dialogs. 4 ©2008 BAUER Independents Ltd. Dino-MITETM v1.0 User's Instructional Guide 5.2 SAVE WINDOW POSITION: As you begin to familiarize yourself with the way this application is set up, you will notice that many of the same buttons will be present in all, or most, other child windows. One such button is the "Save Window Position" button. This button, once pressed, will record the current child window's position so that the next time you reopen the window or start Dino-MITE the window will appear in that location. This gives you control of how windows are to be displayed customizing the way you can efficiently navigate between the children in the parent window. 5.3 HELP BUTTON: This is another one of those buttons you can find in just about every child window. By clicking the "Help" button, the Terminal Window will populate itself with helpful command information pertaining to that particular window in which the button resides. The Help button in the Terminal Window itself will print the entire list of root commands. 5.4 COMMUNICATION WINDOW: - Click Refresh , and select the COMM port Pleo is connected to from the list. - The baud rate should not need to be changed. Leave it set at "115200,n,8,1" - Click "Open Port". NOTE: If you are getting errors or having trouble connecting, please reference section 3.0 of this tutor called "Getting Started". ial - Red Dino Indicator - Indicates COMM port is closed - Green Dino Indicator - Indicates COMM port is open - Yellow Dino Indicator - RXD Shows when Dino-MITE is receiving data from Pleo. - Blue Dino Indicator - TXD Shows when Dino-MITE is transmitting data to Pleo. 5.41 DICONNECTING PLEO SAFELY: If the USB cable is disconnected, or Pleo powered off prematurely, errors may occur. To prevent this from happening follow the list below, sequentially. - Click "Close Port" in the Communication Window. - Unplug USB cable from PC. - Pleo can now be powered off or the USB cable removed. 5.5 TERMINAL MONITOR WINDOW: - Note the buttons clustered together separated into sets in the upper region of the window. Unless otherwise noted, whenever a button is clicked, the command that is sent to Pleo will return informative data back to Dino-MITE. This data will be printed in the Terminal Window. Battery: Takes a snapshot of the battery's current value and prints them in s the Terminal Monitor. Time: Prints Pleo's current time stamp and the time that has past since Pleo was turned on. 5 ©2008 BAUER Independents Ltd. Dino-MITETM v1.0 User's Instructional Guide Configure: Will print Pleo's current configuration . Stats: Prints Pleo's statistical information. Selecting any one of the options from the drop-down list box just to the right of the Stats button, will allow for a more specific return versus the default "all" argument. Monitoring Toggle: Turns off/on streaming data that is being sent to the Terminal. Click once for off, and again for on. NOTE: If disabled, data is still being received by Dino-MITE. It's just not being printed on the screen (RXD Dino Indicator will still be indicating incoming data). Enable Targeting: Enables monitor targeting requires an argument from the drop-down list residing just to the right of the button to print all the values of the selected target in rows and columns. Disable Targeting: Disables monitor targeting utilizes arguments from the drop-down list residing just to the right of the button. 5.51 BUILDING EXECUTABLE SYNTAX: - We refer to syntax as a series of commands strung together separated by spaces that, when sent to Pleo, will allow the user to manipulate him in a way that can go beyond his natural "living" state. That being said, extreme caution should be used. Remember, it is possible to exceed Pleo's limits in such a way that it could cause damage to his various components or harm those in the vicinity. - With Dino-MITE, executing syntax can be accomplished in a number of different ways. 1. The user can directly type commands into the "Syntax Text Box" in the Terminal Window and either click the "Execute" button with the mouse, or press "Enter" on the keyboard. 2. The user can build a syntax string by clicking on any of the commands found inside the "Syntax" menu located at the top of the parent window. Once a command string has been fully built, clicking the "Execute" button will send the syntax to Pleo for implementation. 3. Included within each child window are graphical command buttons that specifically support that module's purpose. Simply by clicking on one of the buttons, the corresponding commands (along with any additional arguments set by the user) are automatically sent without the need to click the "Execute" button in the Terminal Window. The command buttons will give a short description of what each does by resting the mouse cursor over the top of the button. If additional arguments are required, the button will be "linked" to a nearby text box where the user may enter such arguments manually. In some cases, there may be a drop-down list in place of a text box. The user can instead choose the arguments from a list rather than entering text. 6 ©2008 BAUER Independents Ltd. Dino-MITETM v1.0 User's Instructional Guide Execute: Sends any syntax string residing in the Syntax Text Box to Pleo. Rewrite: Recalls last string that had previously been executed from the Syntax Text Box . Erase: Wipes the Syntax Text Box clear of all strings. Clear: Clears Terminal screen. 5.52 LOGGING: - Enabling the Log will keep you informed with changes that occur in selected areas of Pleo's internals. These can include errors, sensor and joint data, animations, and emotions to name a few. This is a rather powerful tool as it can do a lot in the way of revealing what is going on inside your Pleo ...in realtime. One drawback here is that the Terminal can be flooded with large volumes of data that scream past your eyes. This can be difficult to pa ...
