Make a phone call

Change the handheld options
On the Home screen, click Options to view or change your handheld settings. For example, you can set the date and time, change the handheld display settings, or view the status of the handheld battery and the level of wireless coverage.
Add a contact

Use the handheld in the dark
To turn on the backlighting, press the Power button.

Press the Space key to change the value in a field. Press the Alt key to view all the values that are available in the selected field.

Click the trackwheel to view the menu. On the menu, click standard actions such as New, View, Edit, Delete, Save, Options, and Help. Additional options might appear depending on the item you have selected.

Setting up your handheld
Insert the battery
Warning: Use only the battery that Research In Motion specifies for use with your handheld. See the Safety and Product Information booklet that accompanied your handheld for more information on using the battery safely. 1. 2. 3. Press the battery cover release button. Slide off the battery cover. Insert the battery so that the connectors align. 3. 4. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet. Charge the battery to full power. 2. Slide the attachment piece into the power adapter.

Set up email
To begin using email on your handheld, you must integrate with an email account using the setup procedure listed in the next section of this guide.

Replace the battery cover. If the battery is charged, your handheld turns on and a dialog box appears. Click OK.
Set up voice services
To begin using your handheld as a phone, you must integrate your handheld with a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system using the setup procedure listed on page 4 of this guide.

Use this setup procedure to receive email from your corporate Microsoft® Outlook®, IBM® Lotus Notes®, or Novell® GroupWise® email account. To use this setup procedure, one of the following system requirements must be met: Note: After you install the BlackBerry Desktop Software, you can charge the handheld battery using your computer. Integrate with an email account using enterprise activation
When the enterprise activation screen appears on your handheld after you connect your handheld to your computer, your email account is being integrated with your handheld. Wait for the enterprise activation screen to disappear before configuring your network settings.

Configure your wireless network settings
In the handheld options, on the VPN and WLAN screens, type any settings provided by your system administrator. For more information about configuring your wireless network settings, on the handheld, click Help and then click Network Configuration. Click a topic.
Install the BlackBerry Desktop Software
1. 2. Insert the BlackBerry Desktop Software Installation CD into your CD drive. Complete the on-screen instructions.

Use this setup procedure to integrate your handheld with a VoIP system. Contact your system administrator for more information about your VoIP system.
Configure your VoIP network settings
In the handheld options, on the VoIP screen, type any settings provided by your system administrator. For more information about configuring your wireless network settings, on the handheld, click Help and then click Network Configuration. Click a topic.

Why does my handheld not turn on? The power is off. Press the Power button to turn the power on. The battery is not charged. See "Charge the battery" on page 2. Remove and then reinsert the battery. Can I charge my handheld using my computer? Yes. If you have installed the BlackBerry Desktop Software, you can charge your handheld battery using the computer. To charge your handheld battery using the computer, the following system requirements must be met: Why does my handheld not charge? A connection is not secure. Check that all cables and plugs are fully inserted into ports and power outlets. See "Charge the battery" on page 2 for more information The battery is not inserted properly. How do I connect my handheld to the BlackBerry Desktop Software? If the desktop software is installed on your computer, your handheld should connect to the desktop software automatically when you connect the handheld to the computer. If your handheld does not connect, open the BlackBerry Desktop Software. 1. 2. 3. Click Options > Connection Settings. In the drop-down list, click the correct port. Click Connect.
If the connection problems continue, close the BlackBerry Desktop Software and disconnect the handheld. Open the desktop software again and reconnect the handheld. Verify that all connections are secure. Why can I not use shortcuts on the Home screen? By default, you can quickly dial phone numbers from the Home screen. To use shortcuts on the Home screen, in the phone, click Options. Click General Options. Set the Dial From Home Screen field to No. How do I reset my handheld? Only reset your handheld if the handheld does not respond for more than a few minutes, or if your system administrator has advised you to reset your handheld. To reset your handheld hardware and programs, remove and then reinsert the battery.
