Before replacing internal parts, cleaning the printer or clearing a paper jam, make sure you have turned OFF the power switch and unplugged the power cord from the power outlet. Do not handle the plug with wet hands. Doing this might cause an electrical shock. After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer are extremely hot. When you open the front cover or rear cover of the printer, never touch the shaded parts shown in the following illustration. Inside the printer Open the face up output tray To prevent injuries, at least two people should lift the printer, holding the handles on both the right and left sides of the printer, and the front of the printer as shown in the illustration. The wires in the mains lead are coloured in line with the following code : Varning Green and Yellow: Blue: Brown: Earth Neutral Live Internal laser radiation Maximum radiation power: 15 mW Wave length: 760 - 810 nm Laser class: Class IIIb (Accordance with 21 CFR Part 1040.10) Class 3B (Accordance with IEC 60825) The colours of the wires in the mains lead of this printer may not match the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug. If you need to fit a different plug, you should do the following. Remove a bit of the outer cover of the lead, taking care not to damage the coloured insulation of the wires inside. Cut each of the three wires to the appropriate length. If you can, leave the green and yellow wire longer than the others so that, if the lead is pulled out of the plug, the green and yellow wire will be the last to disconnect. Remove a short section of the coloured insulation to expose the wires. The wire which is coloured green and yellow must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter "E" or the safety earth symbol , or coloured green or green and yellow. The wire, which is coloured blue, must be connected to the terminal, which is marked with the letter "N" or coloured black or blue. The wire, which is coloured brown, must be connected to the terminal, which is marked with the letter "L" or coloured red or brown. The outer cover of the lead must be secured inside the plug. The coloured wires should not hang out of the plug. IMPORTANT - For Your Safety To ensure safe operation the supplied three-pin plug must be inserted only into a standard three-pin power outlet that is properly grounded through the normal household wiring. Extension cords used with this printer must be three-pin plug type and correctly wired to provide proper grounding. Incorrectly wired extension cords may cause personal injury and equipment damage. The fact that the equipment operates satisfactorily does not imply that the power is grounded and that the installation is completely safe. Please purchase the appropriate interface cable for the interface you intend to use (Parallel, USB or Network). For Parallel use a shielded interface cable that is IEEE 1284-compliant. Please enhance the RAMDISK size when you want to use the Reprint functions without the optional HDD or CompactFlash. For visually impaired users, we have prepared two HTML files on the supplied CD-ROM: index_win.html and index_mac.html. These files can be read by Screen Reader `text-to-speech' software. 5 Step 1 1 Setting Up Your Printer Remove the Protective Parts Do NOT connect the interface cable. Connecting the Interface cable is done when installing the driver. 2 1 Install the Drum Unit Assembly Open the top cover of the printer. Top cover 2 1 Remove the protective part from the paper exit of the printer. Protective part Unpack the drum unit assembly. Remove the protective part. Protective part Paper exit Drum unit assembly 3 2 Open the multi-purpose tray and lower it gently. Multi-purpose tray Rock it from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the assembly. 3 Remove the protective part from in the multi-purpose tray. 4 Put the drum unit assembly into the printer. Protective part 4 Close the multi-purpose tray. 5 Close the top cover of the printer. 6 3 Load Paper in the Paper Tray 1 Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer. 4 Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. 5 Paper tray Load paper into the paper tray. Check that the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark. Up to here. Protective part Installing the Driver 7 6 3 While pressing the paper guide release lever, slide the adjusters to fit the paper size. Check that they fit correctly into the slots. Put the paper tray back into the printer. Adjuster Macintosh® Network For Legal size paper, press the universal guide release button and pull out the rear of the paper tray. Windows® USB Setting Up Your Printer Step 1 4 Print a Test Page 1 Make sure that the printer power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the printer. 5 Setting Your Language on the Control Panel ON OFF 1 2 Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet. Turn the power switch on. Press the + button until SETUP is displayed. Press the Set button. -- MENU -SETUP 2 ON OFF Press the Set button again. SETUP LANGUAGE 3 After the printer has finished warming up, the READY message appears. Extend the tray extension flap 3 Press the + or ­ button to select your language. Press the Set button to accept. LANGUAGE =ENGLISH * 4 Press the Go button. The printer prints a test page. Check that the test page has printed correctly. Installing the Driver and Connecting the Printer to Your PC When the "Found New Hardware Wizard" appears on your PC, click the Cancel button. 4 Click "Printer Driver." 1 Make sure the USB interface cable is NOT connected to the printer, and then begin installing the driver. If you have already connected the cable, remove it. A C EL C N 5 Click the Next button. Follow the instructions on the screen. 6 Select "Standard Installation," and then click the Next button. 2 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will appear automatically. Follow the instructions on the screen. 7 3 Click "Install Software" icon on the Menu screen. Select "Local Printer with USB cable," and then click the Next button. 10 8 When this screen appears, make sure the printer power switch is on. Connect the USB interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the printer. Click the Next button. 2. Setting Your Printer as the Default Printer (For Windows® 2000/XP Users Only) 1 Click Start and Printers and Faxes. Windows® USB 2 ON OFF Select the Brother HL-7050 series icon. 3 9 Click the Finish button. From the File menu, select Set as Default printer. For Windows® 98 / Me users: The Setup is now complete. For Windows® 2000/XP users: Go to "2. Setting Your Printer as the Default Printer". The setup is now complete. Installing the Driver 11 For Administrator Setting Up Your Printer Step 2 Installing the Driver For Parallel Interface Cable Users Installing the Driver and Connecting the Printer to Your PC 1 Turn off the printer power switch. 4 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will appear automatically. Follow the instructions on the screen. ON OFF 2 Connect the parallel interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to your printer. 5 Click "Install Software" icon on the Menu screen. 3 Turn on the printer power switch. 6 Click "Printer Driver." ON OFF If the "Found New Hardware Wizard" appears on your PC, click the Cancel button. 7 Click the Next button. Follow the instructions on the screen. A C C N L E 12 8 Select "Standard Installation," and then click the Next button. 0 Select the port where your printer is connected, and then click the Next button. 9 Select "Local Printer," and then click the Next button. A Click the Finish button to restart your PC. The Setup is now complete. Installing the Driver 13 For Administrator Windows® Parallel Setting Up Your Printer Step 2 Installing the Driver For Network Interface Cable Users For Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer Users (LPR) If you are going to connect the printer to your network, we recommended that you contact your system administrator prior to installation. Installing the Driver and Connecting the Printer to Your PC 1 Turn off the printer power switch. 5 Click "Install Software" icon on the Menu screen. ON OFF 2 Connect the network interface cable to the printer, and then connect it to a free port on your hub. 6 Click "Printer Driver." Hub 7 3 Turn on the printer power switch. Click the Next button. Follow the instructions on the screen. ON OFF 8 4 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will appear automatically. Follow the instructions on the screen. Select "Standard Installation," and then click the Next button. 14 9 Select "Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer," and then click the Next button. A Select the IP address of your printer and LPR, and then click the Next button. B 0 Select "Search from a list of available printers" or enter your printer IP address. Click the Next button. Click the Finish button. Installing the Driver 15 Contact your Administrator about the Printer's IP Address. For Windows NT® 4.0 and Windows® 2000/XP users: The Setup is now complete. For Windows® 95 / 98 / Me users: After your PC has restarted, setup will be complete. For Administrator Windows® Network Setting Up Your Printer Step 2 Installing the Driver For Network Interface Cable Users For Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer Users (NetBIOS) If you are going to connect the printer to your network, we recommended that you contact your system administrator prior to installation. Installing the Driver, Connecting the Cable and Configuring the NetBIOS port 1 Turn off the printer power switch. 5 Click "Install Software" icon on the Menu screen. ON OFF 2 Connect the network interface cable to the printer, and then connect it to a free port on your hub. 6 Click "Printer Driver." Hub 7 3 Turn on the printer power switch. Click the Next button. Follow the instructions on the screen. ON OFF 4 8 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The opening screen will appear automatically. Follow the instructions on the screen. Select "Standard Installation," and then click the Next button. 16 9 Select "Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer," and then click the Next button.
