Make sure that the power switch on the rear of the TeraStation is in the ON position,withthe"I"symbol presseddown.
Press the power button on the frontpanel.TheLEDswillswirl asyourTeraStationbootsup.
After your TeraStation has completed booting up and the LEDs have ceasedtoswirl,checktheLINK/ACT LED on the front of the TeraStation. Ifit'slit,thenyourTeraStationisconnectedproperly,andyoucangoon to page 8.Ifit'snotlit,turntopage 7fortroubleshooting.

TheTeraStation'sEthernetportwillautomaticallyadjusttouseeitheraCrossoverorPatchcable, soyoumayconnecttheTeraStationtoyournetworkwitheithertypeofEthernetcable.Buffalo Technology doesn't recommend connecting the TeraStation directly to a PC. Verify that the LINK/ACT LED on the front of TeraStation is lit (see page 6'spicture).Ifit'slit,goto page 8tocontinuesettingupTeraStation.IftheLINK/ACT LEDisstillnotlit,trythesuggestions belowtoverifythatyou'renotsufferingfromcommonsetupproblems. The TeraStation Client UtilityallowsyoutoeasilyconfigureTeraStation'snetworksettings.Thetabs showthenamesofavailableTeraStations.IfyouhavemorethanoneTeraStationonthenetwork, clickthetaboftheoneyouwanttoselectit.WhileaTeraStation'stabisselected,itsIP Address isvisibleandtheView Sharesbuttonwilltakeyoudirectlytoitsnetworksharesandfolders.See page 66 for more information on TeraStation Client Utility. For now, make sure that the proper TeraStation'stabisselected,clickSetup,andchoose Browser Management.

Ifthisloginpromptdoesnotappear, yourDHCPservermaynotbe functioningcorrectly.IfDHCPis disabled,youmayre-enableit,orverify that the TeraStation's IP address (page 10) is in the same range as that of your PC. HereontheBasicpage,beginbychangingthe name of your TeraStation in the TeraStation Hostnamefield.Afriendly,easy-to-remember name is recommended. The name cannot containanyspacesorspecialcharacters. Alphanumericcharacters,hyphens,and underscores are allowed. AshortdescriptionoftheTeraStationcanbe entered into the TeraStation Description field. You'llthenseethisdescriptioninNetwork NeighborhoodonWindowsmachines. Makesurethatthedateandtimearecorrect in Date and Time Setup. To synchronize clock settingswithyourcomputer,pressUse Local Time. Tosetupsecurityandpasswordprotection,oraddothersharestoyourTeraStation,pleaserefer to pages 8 - 1ofthismanual.TochangeyourRAIDconfiguration,seepages 8 - 1.Tosetup aprinterseethePrinterssectionbeginningonpage 7.Driveletterscanalsobemappedtoshares on your TeraStation; see page 16 for more information. Fromthe TeraStation's Root Directory screen (see page 15), click the Tools pull down menu and select Map Network Drive;MapNetworkDrivewillrun.Selectthedriveletteryouwouldliketomap from the Drive:pulldownmenu.Enter\\TeraStation_Name\share_name in the Folder:field, where TeraStation_Name is the TeraStation Name set on page 1 and share_name is share (if you're mappingtothispreconfiguredfolder)orthenameofanothersharedfolderthatyousetuponpage 8.YoumaybrowseforasharedfolderbypressingtheBrowse buttonandsearchingthroughthe Entire Network and then the Microsoft Windows Network. Check the Reconnect at logoncheckbox tohaveWindowsconnecttothismappeddriveeverytimeitstarts.Whenfinished,presstheFinish button.TeraStationisnowmappedtoadriveletter.

IfyourMacdoesnotautomaticallydetectyour TeraStation'sSharefolderandputitonyour desktop,youwillneedtoaddtheTeraStation totheMac'sserverlist.BeginbyclickingGo, and then choose Connect to Server.
EnteryourTeraStation'sIPaddressinthe Server AddressfieldandclickConnect. If you don't know your TeraStation's IP address,seepage 1.

Selectthevolumethatyouwanttomount,suchasshare or share-mac, from the list of folders on the TeraStation.

Ifyoudon'tknowyourTeraStation'sIPaddress,thereare several ways to get it. OnesimplemethodistousetheTeraStationclientutility (includedonyourCD)tofindyourTeraStation(s).Justclick onthetabforyourTeraStationandyou'llbeabletoreadits IP address. You must have a Windows PC running on the network to use the TeraStation client. See page 66 for more on the TeraStation client utility.
Ifyouhaveanall-MacnetworkwithnoWindowsPCs available,youmayhavetogettheTeraStation'sIPaddress fromyourrouter'sconfigurationutility.ManyBuffalo routers list this information on the Client Monitorpage,as shown to the right. Consult your router's documentation for instructions on identifying the TeraStation's IP address.

TeraStation Expansion
TeraStationhasfourUSB2.0ports,twoonthefrontpanelandtwoontherear.Theseportscanbe usedforaddingexternalUSBHardDrivesoraUSBPrinter.TeraStationwillthensharetheUSB devices,allowingeveryoneonthenetworktousethem.UptofourexternalUSBharddrives,or oneprinterandthreeharddrives,maybeaddedtoTeraStation.ToconnectaUSBprinterorhard drivetoTeraStation,simplyplugitintooneofthefourUSBPorts. 1. Power Button Press and release the Power Button to turn the TeraStation on. Hold it down for 3 seconds to turn the TeraStation off. 2. USB Ports USBportsonbothfrontand rear panels of the TeraStation may be used to connect USB hard drives, a printer, or an additional TeraStation to your TeraStation. See TeraStation Expansion on page 0 for moreinformationonusingTeraStation'sUSB ports. 3. Hard Drive Status(also5,8,and10)ThisLEDwillglowgreenwhenthecorrespondinghard driveisdetectedatboot,andwillblinkgreenwhenadiskcheckorformatisinprocess.Itwillglow redwhentheharddriveis90%fullormore,andblinkredifthereisaproblemwiththedrive. 4. Hard Drive Access(also6,7,and9)ThisLEDwillblinkgreenwhentheassociatedharddrive isaccessed.Duringstartup,it'snormalforallthelightsonthefrontpaneltolightupinorder, producingapinwheeleffect.

11. Diagnostic LEDTheDiagnosticLEDmay flashwhentheTeraStationencountersanerror. Inthisevent,pleasecontactour24/7technical support at (866) 75-610 (USA & Canada only; see page 71 for European tech support information). 12. Power This LED glows a steady green whiletheTeraStationisoperatingnormally.It blinks quickly during bootup and shutdown, and slowly while the TeraStation is in sleep mode. 13. Link/Act This LED will glow when the TeraStationisconnectedtoanetwork,andblink during normal network activity. It changes color to indicate the speed of the connection: blue fora1000Mbpsconnection,greenfor100Mbps, andredfora10Mbpsconnection. 14. Power SocketPlugthepowercordinto this socket.

Power Switch This is the TeraStation's masterpowerswitch.Whileitison,thepower buttononthefrontpaneloftheTeraStationmay beusedtostartandshutdowntheunit.When thisswitchisoff,nopowergoestotheunit.If this switch is left off for an extended period of time, the TeraStation's internal system clock mayneedtobereset. 16. Internal FanTheinternalfanwilladjust itsspeedaccordingtothetemperatureinsidethe TeraStation. To prevent possible overheating, keep the fan clear and clean of obstacles or dust. 17. INIT Button The INIT button restores your TeraStation to factory default settings. See page 60 for more information on using the INIT button.

UPS interfaceAnUninterruptablePower Supply can use this interface to safely shut downyourTeraStationintheeventofapower failure.Thisinterfaceisnon-LPS.DP-1,DP-1P, DP-2,orDP-2Pcablesmaybeusedtoconnect to the UPS. 19. 10/100/100 Mbps Ethernet Port Use this port to connect your TeraStation to a switch, a router, or another computer. The port is autosensing, so either a conventional Ethernet cable or a crossover Ethernet cable maybeused. 20. USB Ports TeraStation offers four USB 2.0/1.1 ports for adding external drives or USB printers. Please see the TeraStation Expansion section on page 0 to learn more about using TeraStation'sUSBPorts.

Welcome to Advanced Settings! We'll discuss themanyadjustmentsyoucanmaketo yourTeraStation.Beginbybringingup the Browser Management screen that you bookmarkedonpage 1. You are now at Home. Notice that Homeislitupinyellow in the screenshot to the left. You can return tothispageatanytimebyclickingonHome from the menu at the left of your Browser Managementscreen.Here,youcansee basicinformationaboutyourTeraStation's setup.Now,clickthe Basic link from the menu on the left side of your screen.

You may modify your TeraStation's hostname anddescriptionunderHostname Setup. Makesurethatthedateandtimearecorrect in Date and Time Setup. To synchronize time settingswiththoseinyourcomputer,press Use Local Time. To have your system time automaticallysetbyanNTPserver,enableNTP Server and enter an IP address for the NTP server. EnsurethatboththeDisplay Language and the Windows Client Language are set to languages thatyou'recomfortablewith. If you need to access your TeraStation with FTPorAppleTalk,enabletheseprotocolsunder Network Sharing Services. Oncedesiredfieldshavebeencompleted,press the Apply button.

Inmostnetworks,TeraStationwillgetitsIP addressautomaticallyfromaDHCPserver. YoumaydisableDHCPhere.IfDHCPis disabledandanIPaddressisnotsetmanually, itwilldefaultto192.168.11.150.The TeraStation's IP Address,Subnet Mask,Default Gateway Address,andDNS Server address mayallbeenteredmanuallyunderIP Address Properties. Ethernet Frame Sizemayalsobesetmanually onthispage. Click Apply after making any changes.

Note on RAID Arrays
TeraStation uses RAID ("RedundantArrayofIndependentDisks")technologytocontrolthefour harddrivesinyourTeraStation.RAIDmaybeconfiguredseveralways: RAID Spanning-Allfourdrivesarestripedintoonelargedrive,givingthemaximumcapacityfor yourTeraStation.ThissizeistheonelistedonyourTeraStation'sboxandshowsthetotalcapacity oftheTeraStationwithnodatausedforredundancy.RAIDSpanningisfastandefficient,butwith noredundancy,ifoneharddrivefails,alldataontheTeraStationislost. RAID 1(mirroring)-Harddrives(orspannedpairsofharddrives)arearrangedinmirroredpairs. Eachhalfofthepairreadsandwritesexactlythesamedata.Thiscostsyouhalfthetotalcapacity ofyourTeraStation,butprovidesexcellentredundancy.Ifaharddrivefails,themirrorcontinues tosupplydata,soyoumayworkonnormally.Youmayreplacethedamagedordefectivedriveat anytime,andnormalRAID1mirroringwillthenbeautomaticallyrestored. RAID 5(parity)-AlldrivesinaRAID5arrayreservepartoftheirdataspaceforparityinformation, allowingalldatatoberecoveredifasingledrivefails.Theparityinformationtakesupaboutone harddrive'sworthofspace,soifyousetupallfourdrivesintheTeraStationasaRAID5array, your usable capacity will be about 3/4 of the total capacity of the TeraStation. RAID 5 is an excellentcompromisebetweenefficiencyandsecurity.Ifasingledrivefails,nodataislost.After thedamagedordefectivedriveisreplaced,yourTeraStationwillautomaticallyrestorealldatato thenewdriveandresumenormalRAID5operation.ThisishowyourTeraStationissetupout ofthebox. BuffaloTechnologyrecommendsRAID 5foritsexcellentbalanceofefficiencyandsecurity.

This page shows your current RAID arrays. You may delete old arrays or create new ones by clicking on the underlined RAID Array # under RAID Array Configuration. YoumayalsodisableRAID Array Error Detection Responsefromthispage.Normally,thisisset to automatically shut down the RAID array when an error is detected. Though it is not recommended,youmaydisablethatbehavior byclickingDisable and then Apply under RAID Array Error Detection Response. NotethatyourTeraStationhasfourinternalharddrives.BeforecreatinganewRAIDarray,you mayhavetodeleteoneormorepre-existingRAIDArraystoclearuptheharddrivesforyournew one.Thiswilldestroyalldatacurrentlyonthedisks,sobackupanyimportantdatabeforedeleting RAIDarrays.Whetheryouwanttoclearoutanoldarrayorcreateanewone,beginbyclickingon the array's underlined RAID Array #,underName.

To Deleteagroup,putachecknexttoitsnameand click Delete.ToaddagrouptoyourTeraStation, click Add.
Add a name and a description to the Add New Groupfields.PutchecksnexttoeachMember User thatyouwanttobepartofthegroup.ClickApply whenyourgroupissetupthewayyouwantit.

User Management
TeraStation is preconfigured with two users, admin and guest, out of the box. The guest account allows network users login access so that they can clear the print que. It has no password.Theadmin and guest user accounts cannotbedeleted.Todeleteanyotheruser,put achecknexttotheirnameandclickDelete. To addanewuser,clickAdd.
The Add New User dialog will appear. Enter a User Name, Password, and User Description for the new user and click the Applybutton.If a user will be accessing the TeraStation from a Windows 95/98 computer, their password should be 15 characters or less. Mac users's passwordsshouldbe9charactersorless.

To change an account's password, click on the name of the account under User Settings.Note: if a user name and password are used to log into user's windows computer or domain, the same user name and password should be used when creatingtheuser'saccountontheTeraStation,or problemsaccessingsharedfoldersmayoccur.
Enterthedesirednewpasswordinbothboxes and click Apply.

Troubleshooting Multiple Shares
Whenaddingmultipleshares,youmayseethis error message. Thisiscausedbyhavingmultiplesharestothe same resource using different credentials. The error occurs when connecting to at least one secure, restricted share. Due to a constraint in MicrosoftWindows,onlyonesetofcredentialscanmapdrivelettersforanetworkresurcesuchas theTeraStation.Assuch,onlyoneusernameandpasswordcanbeusedwhilemappingadrive.If unsecure,unrestrictedsharesaremappedandthenanattempttomapasecure,restrictedshare occurs,thenthiserrorwilloccur.Topreventthis,youmustcreateallmappedsharesusingthe same login and password information. Please follow the steps on the next page to remedy this problem.

Mapping Multiple Shares
Whenmappinganyshare,selecttheConnect using a different user nameoption.Aloginandpasswordpromptwillappear. Use the username and password required by any secure, restricted shares for allshares.Allmappedsharesmustuse thesameusernameandpassword!
If only unrestricted shares are being mapped, then it's not necessary to set a username and passwordforshares.Multiplemappeddrivestounrestrictedsharescanexistwithoutausername orpasswordaslongasnorestricted,securesharesaremapped.

AUSBprinter,pluggedintoaUSBportoneitherthefrontortherearofyourTeraStation,maybe used as a Windows Print Serverand/oranApple Print ServeronyournetworkbychoosingEnable onthispageasappropriateandthenclickingApply. TeraStationsupportsmostPostScriptprinters.Itdoesn'tsupportbi-directionalprinters. Non-PostScriptprintersarenot supportedbyBuffalo.Youmaybeabletogetenoughinformation fromaprinter'sdocumentationtogetittowork,butourtechnicalsupportcannothelpyouwith this.

Print Server - Printer Share Installation
IfTeraStationissetuptoshareyourprinter(page 7),youcaneasilyaddtheprintertoanyWindows PConyournetwork.FollowthesestepsforeachPCthatyouwanttobeabletoaccesstheprinter. Access the TeraStation by pressing Start, selecting the Run... option, and entering \\TeraStation_Name (where TeraStation_ Name is the name you set on Page 1). Press the OK button whenfinished.
Right click on the lp icon and select Connect. You'll receive a warning that the server doesn't have the properdrivers.Pressthe OK buttontocontinue.

The Add Printer Wizardwilllaunch.Selecttheproperdriver foryourprinter.Ifyourprinterisnotinthelist,you'llhave to insert the CD that came with your printer into your PC's CD-ROMdriveandpresstheHave Diskbutton.Refertoyour printer documentation for further information on installing yourprinterifnecessary.PressOKtofinish.
If lpistheonlyprinterinstalledonthePC,thenitwillautomaticallybesetas thedefaultprinter.Ifit'snottheonlyprinter,youmaymakeitthedefault printerbyclickingPrinters and FaxesinControlPanel,rightclickingonthelp printericonandselectingtheSet as Default PrinteroptionfromtheFiledropdown menu.

Print Server (Delete Print Queue)
Ifacorruptprintjobissenttoaprinter, printingmaysuddenlyfail.Ifyourprintjobs seemtobelockedup,clearingtheprintqueue may resolve the issue. ToexecutetheDeletePrintQueueprogram, presstheDeletebutton.Thiswillclearall currentprintjobs.Userswillhavetore-send anyincompleteprintjobstotheprinter. Iftherearestillproblemsprintingtothe printer,thenchecktheprintermanufacturer's documentationfortroubleshooting information.Also,verifythattheUSBcableis securelyfastenedtoboththeprinterandthe TeraStation.Finally,youmaytryturningtheTeraStationoff,turningtheprinteroff,turningthe printerbackon,andthenturningtheTeraStationbackonagain. Notethatifamulti-function(all-in-one)printerisattachedtotheTeraStation,usuallyonly theprintingandfaxfunctionswillwork.Otherfeatures,suchasscanning,probablywillnot function.
