SAFETY INFORMATION · · · Before using the camera, please ensure that you read and understand the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the camera is operated correctly. Do not aim the camera directly into the sun or other intense light sources that could damage your eyesight. Do not try to open the case of the camera or attempt to modify this camera in any way. High-voltage internal components create the risk of electric shock when exposed. Maintenance and repairs should be carried out only by authorized service providers. Do not fire the flash too close to the eyes of animals or people, especially for young children. Eye damage may result. In particular, remain at least one meter away from infants when using flash. Keep the camera away from water and other liquids. Do not use the camera with wet hands. Never use the camera in the rain or snow. Moisture creates the danger of fire and electric shock. Disconnect the compact power adapter from both the camera and power outlet after recharging and when the camera is not in use to avoid fires and other hazards. The compact power adapter of the camera is designed for exclusive use with this camera. Do not use it with other products. USING THE CASE Store the camera in the case when it is not in use. 7 PREPARING THE CAMERA INSTALLING THE BATTERY PACK The camera can use either the supplied 3.7V 900 mA Rechargeable Battery Pack or the Compact Power Adapter as power source. Charge the Battery Pack before you use it. 1. Slide the Battery/Memory Card Door in the direction of the buttons. 2. Insert the battery pack in the direction of the button marked on the battery pack. 3. Close the Battery/Memory Card Door. CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK 1. Put the battery pack inside the camera body. 2. Connect the DC plug of the power adapter to the camera's DC-IN in terminal. Plug the other end of the adapter into a power outlet. · While charging the battery pack, the green Self-Timer/Charge LED located at the front side of the camera will light up. When charging is complete, the LED will turn off. 3. Unplug the adaptor from AC outlet first and then from the camera when charging is not needed. Note: 1. Charge the battery pack before using it the first time. 2. This is a lithium ion battery pack so there is no need to completely use or discharge it before recharging. It can be recharged at any time. 3. To protect and prolong the life of the battery pack, do not charge it for 24 hours or longer at a time. 4. The camera can be used while charging. 8 PREPARING THE CAMERA Battery Status Symbols The following icons indicate the various battery status. These icons will not appear when the camera is powered with a compact power adapter. Sufficient battery Low battery Battery is over. Recharge the battery. Note: When the battery is running out, the message "Replace Battery" will be displayed on the LCD. USING COMPACT POWER ADAPTER Connect the DC plug of the power adapter to the camera's DC-IN in terminal. Plug the other end of the adapter into a power outlet. Note: 1. Always turn the camera's power off before connecting or disconnecting the power adapter. 2. The camera automatically switches to AC power adapter-powered operation when the adapter is plugged into the camera. 3. Use an AC adapter that meets the camera's power specification (DC 5V). Using an incorrect AC power adapter may result in permanent damage to the camera. INSERTING AN SD CARD 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Slide the Battery/Memory Card Door in the direction of the button to open the door. 3. Insert the SD card in the direction as shown in the figure aside. 4. Close the Battery/Memory Card Door. Note: When the SD card is being written to, read, erased or transmitted to, the green status LED located aside the viewfinder will blink. Do not turn off the camera or open the Battery/Memory Card Door while the LED is blinking. To remove the SD card 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Slide the Battery/Memory Card Door in the direction of the button to open the door. 3. Gently press on the edge of the SD card to release it. 4. Pull the card out and close the Battery/Memory Card Door. 9 PREPARING THE CAMERA ABOUT CAMERA MEMORY AND STORAGE Internal Memory The digital camera is equipped with a 16 MB internal memory. If no SD card is inserted in the camera, all pictures/video clips recorded by the camera will be stored in the internal memory. SD Memory Card When SD card is inserted in the camera, all pictures and video clips recorded by the camera will be stored on the SD card by using the Design Rule for Camera File System (DCF) protocol. The DCF protocol is designed to accommodate file and data exchange between digital cameras and other devices. Photos that are taken by a DCF camera can be viewed on DCF-compatible cameras from other manufacturers. FORMATTING INTERNAL OR SD CARD MEMORY When you wish to delete all the files in the internal memory or on your SD card, or when you newly brought an SD card, format it by following steps below: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. SD cards formatted in another camera, computer or peripheral device may not operate correctly. When that happens, reformat the SD card with this camera. TURNING THE CAMERA ON / OFF Power On Slide the Power Switch to the right side and hold it until the green about 2 seconds to power on the camera. · When the camera is turned on, the lens barrel will extend out lens barrel. Shooting Mode Playback Mode Quality 14 PREPARING THE CAMERA USING THE ZOOM The camera has a 3x optical zoom lens with an effective zoom range 7.7 mm to 23.1 mm (equivalent to 37 mm to 111 mm in 35 mm film format) as well as 4x digital zoom capability. 1. USING THE MODE DIAL Use the mode dial to switch between the three shooting modes: The A/S/M (advanced) mode include: · A Mode: Aperture Priority Mode, that is, the Aperture value can be set manually, while the shutter speed is set automatically. · S Mode: Shutter Speed Priority Mode, that is, the Shutter speed can be set manually, while the Aperture will be set automatically. · M Mode: Both Aperture and Shutter Speed can be set manually. 15 TAKING PICTURES/VIDEO CLIPS TAKING PICTURES IN AUTO MODE In this mode, all you have to do is pressing the Shutter button. The camera will set aperture and shutter speed etc. automatically. 1. Turn the Mode dial to A mode. 2. Frame the subject in the LCD. · For best result, stand at least 0.8 m (2.62 ft.) away from the subject in normal mode. 3. Press T or W button to zoom in or out the subject. 4. Press the Shutter button down halfway and hold there for a few seconds. · When the camera has finished focus, the blue Auto Focus indicator will appear. If auto focus failed, the white AF frame will change from white into red. In this case, please release the Shutter and recompose. 5. Press the Shutter button fully down. · When the image is taken, beep sound can be heard. Note: 1. When shutter speed is low, the image quality will decrease if the camera is not hold. Tips on Red-Eye Reduction feature Shooting with flash in dark places, the subject's eyes may appear red in the picture. This phenomenon is known as "RedEye" and occurs when flash reflects back from the retina. With the Red-Eye Reduction feature, the camera can contract the pupils of the subject by lighting for about 1 second before the flash is fired to reduce the chances of Red-Eye. Tips on Slow Sync. feature In low light conditions, slow shutter speed provides better lighting of the background that is out of range of the flash. The larger the number for the aperture value, the smaller the aperture opens, and consequently the less the amount of light enters. A larger aperture setting produces a lighter image, while a lower aperture value produces a darker image. Turn the mode dial to A/S/M (advanced) mode. Press the MENU button. or button to select Mode. TAKING PICTURES IN S (SHUTTER PRIORITY) MODE When you set the camera in the shutter speed-priority mode, the camera automatically selects an aperture value to match the brightness. Faster shutter speed allow you to catch an instantaneous image of a moving subject while slower speeds create a flowing effect and allow you to shoot without flash in dark areas. Turn the mode dial to A/S/M (advanced) mode. Press the MENU button. Press the or button to select Mode. Press the or to set the camera mode to S (Shutter speed-priority) Mode. 5. When the shutter speed is set long, camera shake will affect the image quality. If the "shaking hand" icon appears in the LCD monitor, secure the camera to a tripod before shooting. 19 TAKING PICTURES/VIDEO CLIPS TAKING PICTURES IN M (MANUAL) MODE You can set the shutter speed and the aperture value manually to achieve a particular effect. QUICK SWITCHING IN A/S/M (ADVANCED) MODE In A/S/M (Advanced) Mode, you can change the Mode setting, EV setting and White Balance setting quickly by following steps below: 1. Press the OK button repeatedly to select the setting to be changed: Shooting mode (A/S/M) EV adjustment Setting the White Balance Off 2. In each setting menu, press the or button to set a new value. 3. Press the OK button repeatedly to close the menu window. SETTING THE EXPOSURE Adjust the exposure compensation setting to compensate for certain light conditions including: backlighting, indirect indoor lighting, and dark backgrounds. Turn the Mode dial to A/S/M (advanced) mode. Press the MENU button. Press the or button to select EV and then press the OK button. Press the or to set the exposure compensation value. Available settings are: -2.0, -1.7, -1.3, -1.0, -0.7, -0.3, 0.0, +0.3, +0.7, +1.0, +1.3, +1.7, +2.0. 5. Press the MENU button twice to close the menu window. 6. To take clean images, use as low an ISO speed as possible. 21 TAKING PICTURES/VIDEO CLIPS RECORDING MOVIE CLIPS The digital camera can shoot video clips with sound. White balance is set and locked to the settings of the first frame. 3. The video resolution cannot be changed when the internal memory or MMC card is used to store video clips. For example, if the files in the internal memory is 100-0001 to 100-0005, the files on the SD card is 100-0001 to 100-0010, after transferring the files from internal memory to the SD card, you will found two folders, one is 100-xxxx, the other is 101-xxxx. The 101-xxx contains the files copied from the internal memory. 26 SETTING FILE NAMES & PRINTING ORDER ABOUT FILE NUMBER AND FOLDER CAPACITY Images or video clips are assigned file numbers from 0001 to 9999, and folders are assigned folder numbers from 100 to 999. Each folder usually contains up to 999 images. If a photo is taken when the file number has reached 0999, or when the files are copied (p.26), the camera will create a new folder. For example, if the current folder is "100-xxxx", the new folder will be named "101-xxxx." If the total folder number reached 999 and the total file number exceeds 9999, the camera will display the warning message "FILE NUMBER OVER." In this case, please set the File Number Reset to ON mode and then format the memory or insert a new memory card. SETTING FILE NUMBER Setting the File No. Reset to OFF is useful for avoiding file name duplication when files are downloaded to a computer. However, if you want to start numbering files from 0001 after a new SD card is inserted, or after the memory is formatted, or when you experience a ""FILE NUMBER OVER" warning, set the File Number Reset mode to ON. The print setting will be removed. 28 MAKING CONNECTIONS CONNECTING THE CAMERA WITH YOUR TV The camera allows you to view individual files on the television. To begin, check your television documentation to determine what video standard you should set your camera to. NTSC PAL Japan, U.S.A., Canada, etc. Europe, Asia (excluding Japan), Oceania, etc. Setting Video Output Signal Mode 1. Press MENU button. 2. Press to select "Setup" menu. 3. Press the or to highlight TV Output. 4. Press the or to select NTSC or PAL. 5. Press MENU button to exit. Connecting the camera with your TV set 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Plug one end of the supplied AV cable to the video-in jack on the TV. 3. Plug the other end of the AV cable to the AV OUT/ USB terminal on the camera. 4. Turn on the TV and switch it to VIDEO mode. 5. Turn on the camera. Everything that would normally appear on the camera's LCD will appear on the TV. The camera's LCD turns off automatically during video output. 6. When the camera is connected with the TV, you can refer the instruction above to use the TV screen as the camera's LCD to do things such as, to taking pictures, to taking video clips and to view the files. DOWNLOADING FILES TO A COMPUTER You can download files taken with the camera onto your computer in one of the following ways: 1. Using an SD card reader. 2. Using the supplied USB cable. Downloading files by using card reader 1. Remove the SD card from the camera, and insert it into an SD card reader. 2. Connect the SD card reader to the computer. 3. Double-click the icon of the drive with the SD card. 4. Copy images from the card into a folder of your computer. 29 MAKING CONNECTIONS Downloading files by using an USB cable Note for Win 98 SE users: The camera driver must be installed before proceeding to download the files. 1. Connect one end of the supplied USB cable to the computer's USB port. 2. Power the camera on. 3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the camera's USB port. The LCD shows "USB CONNECT" when the connection to the computer is successfully. 4. Double click "My Computer". 5. Double click "Removable disk". 6. Double click "DCIM". Files stored on camera will be shown. 7. Copy the files to your computer's hard disk. 30 INSTALLING SOFTWARE (FOR WINDOWS USERS) INSTALLING THE CAMERA DRIVER (FOR WIN 98 SE USERS) Note for Win 98 SE user: You must install the camera driver before proceeding to download files from the camera to your computer by using the USB cable. Once the camera driver is installed, you do not need to install it again. 1. Start up your computer, and insert the software installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The splash screen will appear. Roxio PhotoSuite 5.0 SE gives you the ability to edit, crop and print the photos you download onto your computer from the digital camera. Refer to the application help documentation for information on how to use the software. To start this program, click Start > Program > Roxio PhotoSuite 5 37 APPENDIX TROUBLESHOOTING Problem The camera cannot be turned on. Cause Battery is dead. The battery compartment door is open. Solution Fully charge the battery or use a compact power adapter. Make sure the battery compartment door is securely closed. Wait till the flash is fully charged. Delete unwanted files or insert a new SD card. Turn "File No. Reset" on, then format the card or insert a new card. Set the flash to any mode except OFF. Hold the camera steady when shooting picture. Turn the Macro mode on if the subject is within 5 - 80 cm (0.162.62 ft.)(W) or 30 ­ 80 cm (0.982.62 ft.)(T). Don't use Macro mode when shooting subjects further than 80 cm. Format the SD card with the camera. Use a new card. When the low Battery indicator appears on the LCD monitor, recharge the battery immediately. Install the camera driver before you connect the camera to a computer and turn the camera on. Connect the camera to the TV properly. Change the TV output to NTSC or PAL. The camera cannot take pictures or video clips when the Shutter button is pressed. The flash is charging. Memory is full. Maximum file number is exceeded. The flash doesn't fire.
