This residual magne tism as it is called, sometimes causes distortion which gi ves rise to notchy areas of color in the picture. To avoid these effects the receiver inc orpor ates. an automatic degaussin g circ uit which operates for a s hort while im mediately each time the rece iver is switched on using the mains switch. This circuit removes any residua l magnetism in the metal parts of the picture tube and therefore ens ures th at eac h time the receiver is switched lifelike. If the set is moved or faced in a different direction, the m ains switch m ust be switched off at least 10 minutes i n order that the automatic dega ussing circuit operates prop erly.
