Sparc, the new light electric drive with TwinDrive, gives you that extra boost whenever you need it. Sparc was designed and built to make life easier and more pleasant for cyclists. Sparc is a solution that does not change the character of the bicycle ­ its light weight, features, simple maintenance and comfort ideally complement modern lifestyles. Its user-friendliness and superior help function make Sparc the No. 1 product on the market. RANGE Depending on the mode selected, Sparc allows a range of action of 25 ­ 40 km (15 ­ 25 miles). This means increased mobility with little effort. The range achieved by a single battery charge depends on various factors. These include drive mode, the condition of the battery, the road conditions and particularly the cyclist's own effort. Range SPEED mode ECON mode up to 25 km up to 40 km O P E R AT I N G P R I N C I P L E Sparc allows cyclists to choose between two supplementary drive options. By simply pressing a button on the control unit mounted on the handlebars, you can toggle between the fast SPEED mode and the ECON mode, which offers increased range. Average speed 20 km/h in the plain using a 28-inch wheel and assuming 75-watt input by the rider. (US version: SPEED = 15 miles, ECON = 25 miles) Motor drive SPEED mode ECON mode 25 km/h 20 km/h US version: SPEED = 20 mph, ECON = 16 mph 4 Sparc · July 2004 T H E S PA R C S Y S T E M E 5-gear hub with electric drive TwinDrive system, 200 Watt, allows effective use of energy. 5-gear twist-grip Changing gears is convenient and requires little effort. Handling is simple and intuitive. Sparc control unit All control functions are integrated into one unit with a switch for OFF, ECON and SPEED mode. Battery box 16 V Excellent performance, simple to use, no memory effect, Battery NiMH, 16,8 Volt, 8 Ah. Charger 16 V Charge time 4.5 hours, light indicates charging in progress. Sparc · July 2004 5 O P E R AT I O N The bicycle can be ridden with or without the help of the electric drive. Riding without the help of your Sparc is like riding any ordinary bike and requires no extra effort. When the system is switched on, you start off as usual. The electric drive actively supports you whilst you pedal. » ECON mode works up to a speed of approx. 20 km/h (US version 16 mph). » SPEED mode works up to a speed of approx. 25 km/h (US version 20 mph). 1 Off Ec on Spe ed Off Once these speeds are reached, the electric drive switches off and you continue under your own muscle power. Reducing speed causes the system to come on again. Please charge the battery before your first trip. Set the mode required, ECON or SPEED. The system only becomes active once the bicycle moves. Ec on Spe ed 1 2 2 Off Ec on In SPEED mode the red light gleams. Spe ed The condition of the battery is indicated by 3 green lights. 6 Sparc · July 2004 O P E R AT I O N When only 1 green light gleams, the battery needs to be recharged. 3 E S TA N D B Y M O D E Your Sparc system has an energy saving feature. Approximately 1 minute after you stop using the system it will automatically switch off and the lights on the control unit will go out. When you continue, the electronic system will automatically come on again. A 5-gear hub shift is integrated into the Sparc system. You shift gears by turning the right twist-grip on the handlebars through positions 1 to 5. » Whilst shifting gear continue pedalling without exerting force. » If the desired gear does not engage immediately, briefly stop pedalling. » When approaching inclines shift down in good time. » You can also shift gears when the bike has stopped. 3 5-GEARSHIFTING Your Sparc bicycle is not for children! » Only switch on the Sparc system when you want to travel on your bicycle. » Always switch off the Sparc system before you stand your bicycle upside down or hang it up, also before you carry out cleaning or maintenance work. Sparc · July 2004 7 MAINTENANCE AND CARE B AT T E R Y C H A R G I N G T H E B AT T E R Y You can either charge the battery whilst it is attached to the bicycle or you can remove the battery box to enable you to recharge it at home. » Insert the plug of the charger into the socket of the battery box. » Insert the charger into an electric mains socket. The LED will glow during charging, changing to green when the battery is fully recharged. Yellow ­ Battery is not connected or battery test stage Red ­ Battery charge process Green with Red ­ Charge optimisation Green ­ Battery completely recharged Red with Green ­ Failure Recharge the battery at least every 3 months. The battery must only be charged in a temperature range of +5°C to +30°C. Only charge the battery in the operating position. Only use in dry internal areas. Do not use in rooms (garages) with an explosion risk. Do not dismantle the charging unit and battery box yourself. Incorrect assembly can lead to electric shock or fire. » The charging unit should not get into the hands of children. » Charging should only be carried out in sufficiently well ventilated areas. » When not in use always withdraw the mains plug for the charging unit from the socket (do not pull on the charging unit's cable). » Regularly check the cable and protect it from sharp edges. If it is damaged have it renewed immediately by a specialist workshop. » Protect the unit from oil, grease, aggressive cleaning agents and paint thinners since they can destroy the housing. » If it falls, from a bench for example, the unit must immediately be given a safety check by a specialist workshop. This is also necessary if contact pins become loose. » The battery must never be burned. Risk of explosion! » The battery must be disposed of according to the waste disposal regulations. » Only ever use the Sparc charging unit 16,8 V with the Sparc battery 16,8 V. » In the USA only use the "Sparc USA charging unit". » » » » » 8 Sparc · July 2004 MAINTENANCE AND CARE B AT T E R Y R E M O V E B AT T E RY B O X Press the button on the plug of the battery cable to remove the cable from the box. » Turn both quick-release levers to the "open" position and then pull them outwards. » Remove the battery box from the luggage carrier. 4 4 E locked AT TA C H B AT T E RY B O X » Pull out both quick-release levers and then turn them into the "open" position. » Place the battery box onto the luggage carrier. » Push in the quick-release levers and turn them into the "locked" position. » Push the plug of the battery cable into the socket of the box. Check that the battery box has been correctly mounted. » Protect the battery box from hard jolts. open pulled R E P L A C I N G T H E B AT T E R Y A battery that has become useless must be replaced by a specialist dealer. The old battery must be disposed of properly and will be accepted by the dealer for recycling. S T O R I N G T H E B AT T E RY If you intend to not use your bicycle for a while, remove plug of the battery cable from the box. Store the batterie box fully charged in a dry and cool place. Recharge the battery at least every 3 months. Sparc · July 2004 9 MAINTENANCE AND CARE R E A R W H E E L / W E A R PA R T S ADJUSTING GEARSHIFT Before adjusting the gearshift you must set the twist-grip shift from 4th gear back to 3rd gear. » Align the arrows in the inspection window (1) of the Clickbox by turning the adjustment screw (2) on the gearshift cable. 5 5 1 2 REMOVE REAR WHEEL Pull the plug of the control unit off the hub. Push the button on the plug of the battery cable to remove the plug from the Sparc drive. » Release the knurled screw on the Clickbox and remove the Clickbox. » Pull off the red positioning bush and remove the shift rod/-pipe from the axle. » Release the two axle nuts to remove the rear wheel. » The rear wheel is re-fitted in reverse order. 6 6 The cables must not be squeezed or pinched. Danger of short-circuit! W E A R PA R T S Bicycles chains, sprockets, shifting cables, handlebar grips and batteries are wear parts. Take care of regular control and timely replacement. 10 Sparc · July 2004 MAINTENANCE AND CARE C L E A N I N G / R E PA I R W O R K CLEANING » Your Sparc components are well protected against adverse environmental influences. In order to avoid malfunction due to water penetration pressurized jets (high pressure cleaners etc.) should not be used when cleaning the bicycle. » When using the bike during the winter more frequent cleaning is necessary to prevent damage caused by de-icing salt. R E PA I R W O R K Arrange for any work, which may become necessary on the electrical drive system, the cable harness, the battery or the charging unit, to be carried out by your qualified specialist dealer. » Non-authorized work on your Sparc system could put you in danger and also lead to the loss of your guaranteed rights. » If you have questions or problems please contact your qualified specialist dealer.
