Cuts with Creativity
ERY nearly every production needs music. You have three options: (1) violate the law and use copyrighted music, (2) compose and perform your own songs or (3) purchase buyout music from a library. We'll assume that violating the law is not an option for you most of the time, so that leaves options #2 and #3. Option #2 has the obvious downside that you need a whole lot of time and talent (and money to hire musicians). While buyout tracks are easy to use and ready to go without modification, they are rather inflexible. This leaves a huge gap between complete creative control and no creative control.
V
Fortunately, Digital Juice's StackTraxx are as easy to use as inflexible buyout music, yet they also give you some simple mixing options that allow you to customize the music to fit not only your project, but different parts of your project as well. Here's how StackTraxx work. First, audition and preview the library and find what you need using the free Juicer software. Second, copy the song you want over to your hard drive, separating it into it's various layered tracks (again, using the Juicer). Finally, mix the tracks in your editing software to get the perfect blend. This might mean that you use the full, high-energy 60-second version for your program's title credits, followed by a version that mutes the lead guitar and serves as the music bed under your host's introduction. As an outro and an intro to and from commercial breaks, you might use a quick 15-second verb, but for the closing credits you run the full version, muting the drum track to ease out of the program. The result is fully unified and coordinated program music, all with just a few clicks.

Cuts with Creativity (continued)
You can think of the individual StackTraxx tracks as the source tracks that emerge from a multi-track recording studio. As you know, studio musicians typically record their parts individually and one at a time while listening to the playback of the rest of the song. After the artists are finished recording their independent performances, a mixing engineer then mixes the tracks together to create the final balanced song. StackTraxx let you exercise creative control over which tracks or instruments appear in your custom final mix. StackTraxx songs are already professionally mixed, however, so you also have the ability to turn individual elements on and off and still have a balanced song.

What is the Juicer?
The Juicer is the free software that comes with all Digital Juice products. It allows you to browse, search, audition and manage all of your Digital Juice content. It is also the software that lets you break StackTraxx songs up into their individual tracks. The Juicer was originally created to be a rather sophisticated animation processing and format conversion application, but as far as StackTraxx are concerned, it is simply the tool you'll use to find the music you need and break it down into its individual tracks.
Installing the Juicer
You can find the installer for the Juicer on the Juicer CD included with your package. When you insert the CD, the Juicer installation process may begin automatically, depending on how your computer is configured. If it doesn't, you can begin the process manually by using your file manager to browse the CD and then run setup.exe. Follow the prompt and click the Installation option. We are constantly striving to update the Juicer software and recommend downloading the latest version. The download is very small, and there's never a charge for updates: http://www.digitaljuice.com/download.html
Installing Catalogs in the Juicer
Once you have installed the Juicer, launch the application and install the preview files for your Digital Juice content. Catalog previews allow you to search and audition your media more conveniently. Since high-quality Digital Juice media files are very large, it is convenient to install digitally-compressed previews of these media files on your hard drive. While these previews do take up some space on your hard disk, the storage requirement is considerably less than the original files would otherwise require.

What is the Juicer? (continued)
To install a catalog: 1. Run the Juicer application. 2. Insert the Index DVD disc of your product into your DVD-ROM drive. 3. From the File menu, select Install Previews. 4. Click the OK button in the dialog. At this point, the Juicer will ask if you would like to install the StackTraxx MP3 previews (Figure 1). The MP3 previews take up a significant amount of disk space (around a few hundred MB), but will make the auditioning process much faster. If disk space is tight and you do not install the previews, you can still audition the songs and break them up into their component tracks, but you will need to place the StackTraxx DVD in your drive every time you want to audition the songs. The downside to this is that you'll have to swap discs in and out of your drives, which interrupts your workflow and costs you time. To uninstall a catalog: 1. Run the Juicer application.
Figure 1: Installing MP3 previews will let you audition the various tracks, but will take up more space on your hard disk.
NOTE: You can find the media previews and source files on the Index DVD disc, which may be located in the back of your StackTraxx library packaging. A set of StackTraxx audio CDs are also included in your package, which is how most conventional buyout music libraries are distributed.
2. From the File menu, select Uninstall Previews. 3. Select the product catalog that you would like to uninstall using the drop-down list. 4. Click the Uninstall button in the Uninstall Catalogs dialog.

Using the Juicer
If you are working with a computer-based editing application, the Juicer is the software you'll use to interact with Digital Juice media files. The Juicer is a media management tool that helps you organize, sort, search, browse and find the media you need for your project and a media processing tool that converts Digital Juice source media into a format that is compatible with your editing software and equipment. The Juicer interface (Figure 2) has four windows that suggest an efficient workflow. These windows are all freely movable (drag them by the bar at the top of the window), resizable (drag handle on the lower-right corner) and you can toggle windows on and off with the associated command on the Windows menu.
Figure 2: The general workflow when using the Juicer software to find and process your media.

Using the Juicer (continued)
An Overview of the Juicer Workflow: 1. The Keyword List is used in conjunction with the Product Browser to filter and narrow your search. 2. The Product Browser window lets you visually browse through the media. When you click on an item, the Preview Window displays the various tracks in your media. 3. The purpose of the Preview Window is self-apparent. First, click on an item in the Product Browser window and then click the Play button in the Preview Window to hear the song. 4. The Batch Window is where you'll break your StackTraxx songs up into their component parts and output media files that are compatible with your editing software.
StackTraxx Quick Start
StackTraxx music is very easy to use. While the rest of this manual gets into the core of the technology, the following section outlines three different ways to use the product and may be all you need to read. The three ways you can use StackTraxx are: (1) as conventional royalty-free buyout music, (2) as custom mixed buyout music and (3) as individual tracks that you remix in your editing software.
StackTraxx as Conventional Buyout Music
While StackTraxx were designed to be flexible, mixable and customizable, each song is a completely professionally produced and mixed piece that can be used as-is in any production. If you like what you hear, here's how you can get the mixed-down songs out of the Juicer. To render out a full mix from the Juicer: 1. Use the Product Browser and the Play button in the Preview Window to locate and audition the song and duration you want to use.

StackTraxx Quick Start (continued)
2. Drag the song from the Product Browser window to the batch list in the Batch Window. 3. On the Output tab in the Batch Window, set a Save Location and enter a Save Name. 4. Click the Render Current button. You can keep the default options on the Settings tab (Rate = 44 kHz, Channels = Stereo, Sample Width = 16 bits) and on the Effects tab (Normal). The single file that the Juicer outputs will be the complete mix, exactly as you hear the preview, rendered to a WAV or AIFF file using uncompressed PCM encoding.
StackTraxx Remixed
The real advantage of StackTraxx is in the mixing and remixing of the various songs to fit your needs and there are two ways to do this. First, you can use the Juicer to do your remixing and output a single file that is ready for your project. Second, you can split the song up into its individual parts and remix them later in your editing software. To render out a remixed file from the Juicer: 1. Use the Product Browser and the Play button in the Preview Window to locate and audition the song and duration you want to use. 2. Drag the song from the Product Browser window to the batch list in the Batch Window. 3. On the Effects tab in the Batch Window, select the Split option. 4. Select the tracks you want to include in your mix (all are On by default). Use the Play button to audition your remix. 5. On the Output tab in the Batch Window, set a Save Location and enter a Save Name. 6. Click the Render Current button.

StackTraxx Quick Start (continued)
You can keep the default options on the Settings tab (Rate = 44 kHz, Channels = Stereo, Sample Width = 16 bits) and on the Effects tab (Normal). The single file that the Juicer outputs will be the complete remix, exactly as you hear the preview, including only the tracks you selected in step #4, rendered to a WAV or AIFF file using uncompressed PCM encoding.
StackTraxx Separated into Tracks
By splitting StackTraxx into their component parts, you have maximum flexibility with your music once you are back in your editing software. Whether you choose to remix in the Juicer and output a single mixed file or whether you decide you want to do the remixing yourself depends on how much flexibility you need and how well you know your editing software. There is no question that the process of creating the remix yourself in your editing software is a more difficult and involved task, but it is also gives you the most creative freedom, flexibility and fit for your project. To separate the tracks out of a StackTraxx song: 1. Use the Product Browser and the Play button in the Preview Window to locate and audition the song and duration you want to use. 2. Drag the song from the Product Browser window to the batch list in the Batch Window. 3. On the Output tab in the Batch Window, select the Split into Tracks option. 4. Set a Save Location and enter a Save Name. 5. Click the Render Current button. You can keep the default options on the Settings tab (Rate = 44 kHz, Channels = Stereo, Sample Width = 16 bits) and on the Effects tab (Normal). The Juicer will generate multiple

files corresponding to the 4-7 tracks that make up the song, rendered to a WAV or AIFF file using uncompressed PCM encoding. You can now import these into your editing software and lay them down on multiple audio tracks to mix them. Use the track volume controls and envelopes to adjust the mix. You can also slice and dice to create totally new arrangements. See the Tutorials section for some examples.
Syncing Your Tracks
Synching and lining up the separate tracks in your editing software can be challenging. Here are a few ideas that will help you get everything synced up correctly: You can usually zoom way in on the timeline, often down to the sample level, to make sure your clips begin at exactly the same time. Most editing environments include a feature called "snapping" that pops clips on the timeline to discrete locations or to the timeline cursor. This feature may let you sync your clips more easily. Another option is to simply line up your clips with the very beginning of the project and then move them as a grouped unit or with a multiple clip selection tool. Some editors let you group clips together so that when you select and move one clip in a group, all of the clips in that group are selected and moved.
Audio CD Library
The special features of StackTraxx songs that allows you to remix the songs require a computer. Most conventional music libraries are distributed as audio CDs, however, and in order for StackTraxx to be compatible with the widest range of users, we've also included a copy of the library on

audio CDs in your package. If you use a standalone appliance (from MacroSystem, Applied Magic or Edirol), are editing with a pair of VTRs or are directing a live production, you will not (indeed, cannot) install or use the Juicer. You can still use StackTraxx, however. Each StackTraxx volume includes audio CDs with all of the mixed songs and cuts. This lets you play the songs using any CD player, including the one in your living room or car. This means you can use and mix StackTraxx just as you would any other buyout music library. To capture analog audio to an editing appliance: 1. Connect a CD player to the audio input on your standalone editor (via RCA or 1/8-inch mini plug). 2. Select the track that you would like to record using your CD player's remote control navigation and transport controls. 3. Begin recording on your appliance. 4. Press Play on your CD player and record the song. 5. Stop the recording on the appliance and stop playback on the CD player. Newer standalone editing appliances often have an audio CD track-ripping feature that will let you digitally extracts CD audio tracks, which is a better and faster option for getting the music onto the hard drive. Generally, appliances that have a CD or DVD drive also have the software that lets you rip audio CDs.

Media Management
The Juicer is a powerful, but easy-to-use, tool for media management. The Product Browser window (Figure 3) has search tools on the left that will help you sort through your files. The right side of the Product Browser window has a familiar file pane. The View list determines how the media is displayed in the window. When you click on a media file in the Product Browser, a preview will play in the Preview Window. When you find media that you want to use, drag it to the Batch Window or click the Add to Batch List button.
Figure 3: Use the Product Browser window to search for and sort your media.
Search Your Media
Every Digital Juice product that you own contains many dozens of media files, which can make finding exactly what you need an organizational challenge. The Product Browser has a Search Tool to help (Figure 4). The easiest way to search is

Media Management (continued)
to simply type in any key word or words you like into the search box and click the Find button. You can filter your search and limit what it returns by clicking the drop-down list: Search All--This is the default option and does not filter your search. Search All will return a list of stills, video clips, animations and music from any and all Digital Juice product catalogs that you have installed in the Juicer. Search Catalog--This limits your search to a particular catalog. For example, you could limit your search to StackTraxx to exclude stock video and audio clips. This search may return a variety of media types (audio and video), depending on the catalog that you select. The Editor's Toolkits, for example, include animated backgrounds as well as other media types (for example, animated and static lower thirds, animated overlays, photos, photo objects, mattes and motion design elements). Search Content Type--You can also limit your search to a particular kind of media within a catalog or collection. This limits your search to the selection in the Content Type list located just above the Search Tool. If your search is not turning up what you need, try using the Keyword List window (Figure 5) to modify, filter and narrow your search criteria. This is often the most fruitful way to search StackTraxx, since you can limit your search to only those words that are in the StackTraxx database.

To perform a keyword search: 1. From the drop-down list, select the product you wish to search, in this case StackTraxx. 2. From the Keyword List, select the word (or words) that you want to use to filter the media. 3. In the Product Browser window, make sure Search Catalog is selected from the Search Tools drop-down list. 4. You'll notice that the text box next to the Find button updates with the word(s) you have selected. Click the Find button to perform the filtered search. Hold the CTRL key to select multiple words, one at a time or you can select a range of keywords by holding the SHIFT key down. The search function for multiple words use an "or" operator, which means that the search will return any media files associated with any of the keywords you select, increasing the number of clips returned.
Figure 5: The Keyword List filters your search criteria in the Product Browser window.
NOTE: Since StackTraxx are already sold by genre, some good keywords to use for your searches include tempo (e.g. slow, medium, fast) and featured instrument (e.g. guitar, piano, saxophone).

Media Processing (Rendering)
Besides helping you find the media you need, the Juicer also processes raw media files into formats that are compatible with your application, whether than means a software editing environment or a live presentation tool. The Juicer renders StackTraxx out to an uncompressed PCM format. The CDquality stereo tracks are distributed with a 44.1 kHz sample rate with a 16-bit sample depth. The file format depends on your editing environment, Mac (AIFF) or PC (WAV).
Why Convert File Formats?
StackTraxx are distributed ready to use, right off of the included audio CDs, just like any other buyout music library. There are two reasons that the Juicer is required for any of the special StackTraxx features, however: 1. Compatibility--With so many different kinds of software editors and computers, it would be impossible and confusing to distribute dozens of different versions of our products. We can't predict what future formats might come out next year or the year after, but the Juicer allows us to convert Digital Juice media to whatever file type you need today and tomorrow. 2. Traxx--The raw media files (*.stx) on your DVD discs are in a proprietary StackTraxx format that contains all of the tracks in a mixed and finished format that can be extracted and separated later. The Juicer is the only application that can perform this function.

The Batch Window
Most of the work of the Juicer happens in the Batch Window. The general process of converting media in the Juicer is as follows: To c o n v e r t m e d i a : 1. Locate the media you want to convert using the Product Browser window and the Preview window. 2. Drag the media you want to convert from the Product Browser to the Batch Window (or press CTRL+J on your keyboard). 3. Configure your tracks on the Effects tabs at the bottom of the Batch Window (more on this step in the following sections). 4. On the Output tab, select the Split into Tracks option. 5. Click the Render Current button (CTRL+R) for a single file or the Render All button for multiple files in a batch. The difference between converting one file and converting a batch is nothing more than convenience and time. When you drag a single file from the Product Browser window to the Batch Window, you are technically creating a batch list of one file. You can also drag multiple files to the Batch Window, one at a time or as a group, to build a batch list of files to convert. To convert all of the items on the list at one time, click the Render All button. Sometimes, the raw source media will be on different discs if you own multiple StackTraxx volumes, so the process is not entirely automatic and you will might need to swap source discs occasionally (the Juicer will prompt you when this is necessary).
Figure 6: Notice the red status bar note (lowerleft) prompting you to "Please insert DVD STX_D02D" which is the DVD for StackTraxx volume 2
NOTE: The Juicer will prompt you when you need to insert a disc. For example, if you have not installed the MP3 previews, when you try to Split a StackTraxx song, a red status bar note will appear (Figure 6)

Saving Custom Settings to the Menu
The batch list can remember your settings so that future songs can come out of the Juicer in the same format and be saved to the same location. Click the triangle next to the Save Location box on the Output tab to access the commands that will help you process your media more efficiently in the future: Select Save Location--The Delete command removes a custom setting from the menu. Save--The Save command adds your custom settings to the bottom of the menu for future access (Figure 7). Apply to All--The Apply to All command applies the custom setting to the entire batch list.
Saving a Batch List
After creating a complex batch list with a set of carefully configured settings, you can save the list for later processing. Click the triangle next to the Render Settings item above the tabs in the Batch Window and select Save Batch List As (or press CTRL+S on your keyboard). The Juicer will prompt you to enter a name and save location for the file. To save additional changes to a batch list, click the Render Settings menu triangle and select Save Batch List. Formats
The bulk of the work the Juicer performs is encoding raw media into formats compatible with your editor. You'll determine the digital format of the output file on the Settings tab, while the file format is determined by your choice of editing computer. Here is a summary of the procedure (with details on the following pages): To r e n d e r m e d i a i n t h e J u i c e r : 1. On the Settings tab, determine the physical format (sample rate, channels, bit depth [sample width]). 2. On the Output tab, select save location and name for the file.
Physical Format
When we talk about the physical format of a digital media file, we refer to its sample rate (Rate), bit depth (Sample Width) and channels (stereo or mono). The playback device ultimately determines the required format. For example, CDaudio requires a 44 kHz sample rate and a bit depth of 16 bits, while DVD-video needs a 48 kHz rate at 16 bits per sample.
File Format
After you have configured the Settings tab to convert the Digital Juice raw media into the physical format you need (frame size and rate), the Juicer will also automatically select a data file format. The format that you select will depend on whether you are using a Windows PC or a Mac. On Windows computers, the output file format is a WAV file (*.wav). On a Mac, you'll get AIFF files (*.aiff).
