This user guide has been designed to explain all the important features of your Media Center PC. Learn about your Media Center and the various ports you can connect new devices to. You can also learn about Windows XP Media Center and how to use many of its exciting new features.

Chapter 1 - Your new Media Center PC
Your remote control...
Transportcontrols These controls should be familiar to anyone who has used a video recorder, DVD player or CD player. The controls will perform the listed function in whatever mode you are in, e.g., DVD mode, or CD mode. Note
The remote control shown is for illustration only. Your unit may vary.
Navigationcontrols Arrowsmove you around the screen. OK confirms menu options similar to a mouse click. Back moves to the previous screen. MoreInfo shows details of the currently selected media. Guide opens the TV Guide. LiveTV opens full screen television.
DirectAccess,AudioandVideobuttons These controls allow you to change the channel, volume and directly access common functions within Media Center. CH/PG allows you to move up and down channels. VOL allows you to increase or decrease the volume. Mute turns sound on or off. DVD Menu opens the DVD disc's menu. MyVideos takes you to your video section. MyMusic takes you to your music section. MyTV opens the live TV functions. MyPicturesopens your digital pictures.

Ports explained...
Your Ei System Media Center has a number of sockets called `ports' that allow you to connect a wide variety of devices. The following pages will explain the function of each port. Some ports may not be present on certain models. PS/2ports Connect your keyboard (purple) and mouse (green) to these ports. Serialport A 9-pin serial port is used to connect older devices such as external modems and mice. Parallel(Printer)port Use this port to connect older printers that are unable to connect using a USB port. USB2.0ports Connect modern devices such as cameras, printers and scanners to these ports. You can also connect advanced keyboards and mice to these ports. 1394FireWireports FireWire ports are used to connect digital video cameras, hard drives and image editing equipment. They are found in 2 sizes. LAN(Network)port Use this port to connect to a network of computers at home or work. Modem Connect your phone line to this port to access the Internet.
VGA Connect your computer screen to this port.
DVIport You can connect LCD screens with a digital connection to this port.
S-videoTV-out You can connect your computer to your TV using this port. It is ideal for watching DVD movies and video files.

Audioports Your computer has a number of audio ports, some of which may have more than one function. The type of ports on your computer may vary depending on which model you have. You can configure the audio ports using the supplied software. Configuration 1 For models with 3 audio ports only. Line-in(Blue)- use this port to input sound for recording. Line-out(Green) - use this port to connect stereo speakers or headphones. Mic(Pink)- use this port to connect an external microphone.

Configuration 2 For models with 6 audio ports. You can connect stereo, or 5.1 / 7.1 surround sound speakers. Rear(Grey)- connect the rear speakers from your surround sound system. SideSpeakers(Black) - connect side speakers where supplied. C/Sub(Orange) - connect your centre speaker or sub to this port. Front(Green) - connect stereo or front speakers to this port. Mic(Pink) - use this port to connect a microphone. Line-in(Blue) - use this port to connect external audio devices for recording.

Using the TV-out function
Your Ei System Media Center PC is supplied with the ability to connect to a TV set. This feature allows you to use Media Center, watch DVDs and videos on your TV screen rather than a computer monitor. The exact settings for TV out will vary depending on which graphics card is supplied with your PC. You can usually access the settings by carrying out the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Click Start > ControlPanel. Then clickAppearanceandThemes. Now click Display. Select the SettingsTab and click the Advanced button. You will need to look for a Tab labelled Displays,TV,Output or something similar. In the example shown in Fig. 4 you need to select Displays. Make the necessary adjustments for your TV and display type.

Turning on surround sound support
You Ei System computer allows you to use 5.1 surround sound speakers. This allows you to experience DVD movies and games to their full sound potential. To configure your computer, please carry out the following steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Click Start > ControlPanel. Now click the "SwitchtoClassicView" option in the top left. Look for an icon named SoundManager or something similar and double-click it. A control panel will now be displayed and will look like Fig. 5 or Fig. 6 depending on which sound chip is supplied with your computer. From here you can choose which speaker setup you want to use, for example, Headphones, 2 Speakers, 4 Speakers, 5.1 Surround. Make your selection. The diagram will explain where to connect your speakers.

Most computer stores sell 5.1 Surround Sound speaker kits for computers. If you enjoy games and DVD movies on your computer these are an essential purchase.

Your Media Center's hardware
Keyboard
Along with the mouse your keyboard is one the main tools for interacting with your computer. The keyboard allows you to enter commands and text when you use software to create documents, play games, chat with friends on the Internet and much more.
The Mouse
Use the mouse to control the arrow or cursor on your computer's screen. The mouse has 3 main controls that you can use, these are explained below. Mouse controls Leftbutton - this is the button you will use the most. Use a single-click to select an item, or to insert the cursor at a required point in a text document. You need to double-click an icon or file to open it. Right-click - use this button to access `context menus'. These menus contain common functions for the area you click on. For example, when you right-click the Desktop you can access Display Properties, or create a shortcut. Scrollwheel- the scroll wheel changes function depending on which program you are using. For example, in Internet Explorer you can use the scroll wheel to move up and down a web page.

CD / DVD drives
Your Ei System computer is supplied with the latest in CD and DVD drive technology. Depending on the model you purchased you have access to the following drives: CDROM/CDR/RW - these drives allow you to use data and audio CDs with your computer. You can also record files and movies using recordable or re-recordable CD discs. DVD-ROM/DVDR/RW - these drives have all the functions of a CD ROM / CD R/RW drive in addition to reading DVD discs. You can also record files and movies to recordable and re-recordable DVD discs on compatible drives. Recordable media Recordable CD and DVD discs come in a variety of formats. You should check that your drive can support the discs you intend to use before you buy them. CDmedia You can buy CD discs in the following formats: · · CDR - you can record data only once to these discs. CDRW - you can record and delete files up to 1000 times on these discs. DVDmedia You can buy DVD discs in the following formats: · · · DVD+R/DVD+RW- these discs use the +R format and come in record once or re-recordable discs. DVD-R/DVDRW- these discs use the -R format and come in record once or re-recordable discs. D VDRAM - premium standard ideally suited for data backup and TV recording.

They are an ideal replacement for the humble floppy disk drive because the cards are small, light and have a large storage capacity. Chapter 2 - Starting your Media Center for the first time
Turning on your Media Center
Once you have set up your computer and connected it to your TV you are now ready to turn it on. To do this press the power button on the front of the monitor and the cabinet. The computer will now load Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition. Before you can start to use Windows® XP you will need to complete the first time set up known as the `Out of box experience'. During this process you will be asked to agree to the End User Licence Agreement, create user accounts, and set up an Internet connection. When you have completed the set up you are ready to set up Media Center to work with your TV signal and Internet connection. What you need to get started...
You can speed up the installation of your new Media Center by carrying out the following: 1. Connecting your Sky Digital box To use Sky Digital with your Media Center you will need to know the UHF channel number your Sky Box uses. To do this carry out the following: · · Press the Services button, type 401, then press the Select button. You will see theInstallerMenu. Go to the RFOutlets Menu. You will see theRFChannelnumber, make a note of this.
2. Setup your Internet connection The Media Center setup wizard needs to use your Internet connection at various points, for example, downloading TV settings and the TV Guide. You should set up your Internet account before your begin. If you do not have an Internet account already we have included AOL to get you up and running. AOL allows you to connect to the Internet using a modem and telephone line, or a broadband connection. For a monthly subscription you will receive email, special content and Internet access without having to pay for the phone calls to the Internet. 3. Media Center Setup Wizard When you are ready press the Startbutton on your remote control to start the Media Center Setup Wizard.

Media Center Setup Wizard
Before you can start using Windows XP Media Center Edition you will need to complete the MediaCenterSetupWizard. The options you need to select will vary depending on what type of TV, speakkers and TV signal you are using. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Wizard. Important You will need to make sure that you have an Internet connection available before you begin. To get the best performance we recommend that you have a broadband Internet connection.

Turning off your Media Center
When you have finished with your computer you need to turn it off correctly. This will help keep your computer running smoothly. To turn off your computer click Start then Turnoff. Alternatively you can press the power button on your remote control and choose from the options. You will see a series of options on the screen (Fig. 8). Note: if you are using Media Center to record TV your should not turn of your computer. Shut down this option will close Windows XP and turn off power to your computer. Standby your computer enters a power saving sleep mode. You can return to work by moving the mouse, pressing a key on your keyboard, or pressing the power button on the cabinet. Hibernate if you choose this option Windows will take a snap shot of your current work and save it to memory, then it will turn off. When you next turn on your computer you will be returned to this saved condition. Restart click this option to close Windows and restart your computer. This is handy if you need to reset your computer when a crash occurs, or your computer is running slowly.
Tip
To access the Hibernate option you need to hold the mouse pointer over the StandBy button. Press and hold the Shiftkey on your keyboard and the option will change to Hibernate.

Starting Media Center
To start using Media Center you need to do one of the following: Press the green Startbutton Or, Click Start > MediaCenter with your mouse from the Windows Desktop. Media Center will now load to the Start screen (Fig. 9). Use the remote control or your mouse to move around the menus. The Start screen is the launch pad from which you can access the different areas of Media Centre. You can return to the Start screen at any time by pressing the Startbutton on your remote. My TV - manage your TV schedule
Overview
MyTV gives you complete control of your TV schedule. You can watch live TV full screen, or in a smaller window while you continue working. Media Center even lets you pause and rewind live TV so you never miss a second. You can also use the TV Guide to find shows of interest. The TV Guide will also allow you to record one show, or the whole series. Use the CH/PG+/-buttons, or the numeric keypad to change channels on your Media Center.

Media Center PC Pausing live TV
When you start to watch a TV channel your Ei System Media Center will store 30 minutes of the channel in the background. This allows you to pause, rewind and fast forward live TV broadcasts. To pause a show press the Pause button on your remote control. When you pause, rewind, or fast forward a TV show you will see the time shift window (Fig. 12). This displays the timeline for your TV broadcast.
The TV Guide
The TV Guide allows you to view upcoming programs for up to 14 days. It's free to use and will always be up to date (providing you have an Internet connection). You can access the TV Guide at any time by: · Or, · Selecting the Guideoption in MyTV. Pressing the Guidebutton on your remote

Media Center PC Updating the TV Guide
The TV Guide will only remain useful so long as you keep it up to date. To do this you need an Internet connection. Normally the TV Guide will download updates as soon as it detects that an Internet connection is available. However, you can also download updates manually. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Press the Startbutton on your remote control. Go to the Settings menu on the StartScreen. Now go to TV>Guide and select the `GetlatestGuidelistings' option. You will see a message asking if you want to update the Guide. Select the Yes option. Media Center will download the latest TV Guide data. Please note that this can take a while if you are using a slow Internet connection.

You will see `No data available' inside the TV Guide if Media Center was unable to successfully download information. AbroadbandInternetconnectionisrecommendedforfast updatestoyourTVGuide.

Media Center PC How to change your post code to receive the correct TV Guide
If you move home you may need to change your post code so that you receive the correct channel details. 1. 2. 3. Press the Start button on your remote control. Now choose Settings > TV > Guide > SetupGuideListings. Choose `Next' and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Adding missing channels to the TV Guide
If you find that certain channels are missing from the TV Guide you can add them in manually. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Press the Startbutton on your remote control. Then choose Settings > TV > Guide > AddMissingChannels. Choose AddChannel from the list. Enter the name of the channel using the numeric keypad on your remote. Enter the correct UHFchannelnumber (consult your TV provider). Repeat steps 3 to 5 for each channel. Finally, choose `Done'.
Removing channels from the TV Guide
1. 2. 3. 4. Press the StartButton on your remote control. Then choose Settings > TV > Guide > EditSettings. Uncheck the box next to the channels you want to remove When you are finished choose `Save'.

Media Center PC Searching the TV Guide for programs
You can search the TV Guide to find the program you want, or just to find something of interest. There are 3 search options you can use; title, keyword, or categories. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Press the Startbutton on your remote and go toMyTV. Choose Search from the menu on the left. Choose Title to search for a program name, Keyword to search for a word appearing in a title, or Categoriesto search for programs under Movies, Sport etc. Enter the title or keyword using the numeric keypad (similar to text messaging on your mobile phone) and press the OKbutton (Fig.16). A list of results will be displayed on the screen. Use the arrow buttons to move through the list. Press the OKbutton to select an entry. If the program is not currently playing you can choose Record or RecordSeries and press OK. Media Center will record the show when it airs.

Recording TV programs
Your Ei System Media Center PC can act as a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) allowing you to record and watch your favourite TV shows when you want. Programs are saved onto the hard drive ready for you to watch at a later date. You don't need a separate video recorder or video tapes. You can record the program you are currently watching by pressing the `Record' button on your remote. You can also schedule recordings manually, or by using the TV Guide. Important Media Center cannot record if your PC is turned off. Leave your Media Center turned on, or in standby mode.
Recording icons
Scheduled recordings will have the following icons displayed in the TV Guide. Single recording - the program will only be recorded once.
Record series - the entire series will be recorded (except repeats).
Useful tips for recording
· · · You can't watch one channel while recording another. If you change channel then recording will stop. When you move to another area, for example, the Start Screen, the channel you are watching will be displayed in a small window in the bottom left of the screen. Some models have an FM Radio tuner built into the TV tuner card. You cannot listen to radio and watch or record TV at the same time.

You can tell Media Center to record a program or an entire series by using the TV Guide. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Press the Startbutton on your remote control and go to MyTV> Guide. Use the arrow keys on your remote control to move around the TV Guide and find the program you want to record. This can be now or in the future. Press the `Record' button on your remote control once to record the program, twice to record the series. Press the `Record' button again to cancel the recording. If there is a conflict in the recording schedule Media Center will alert you. Press the Back button to return to Media Center.

Recording from search results
You can schedule a recording while searching the TV Guide. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Press the Startbutton on your remote control and go to MyTV> Search. Search using the Title,Keywordor Categories functions. Choose the program you want and press the OKbutton. Now choose Record or RecordSeries and press the OKbutton. If there is a conflict with another scheduled recording Media Center will alert you. Press the Backbutton to return to Media Center.

You can schedule a recording in Media Center manually, just like a video recorder. This allows you to specify a date, channel and time. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Press the Startbutton on your remote control and go toMyTV> R ecordedTV>AddRecording. Choose ChannelandTime from the list. Use the numeric keypad to enter the channel number. Use the + and- buttons to scroll through frequency, date, time, storage and quality options. Press OK to accept each option. Finally, select Record from the menu on the left and press the OK button.

Watching recorded programs
To watch a program you have recorded: 1. 2. 3. Press the Startbutton on your remote control and go to MyTV> RecordedTV. You can sort recordings by date, name or category to help find the program you want. Select the program from the list and press the OK button to start watching.

Media Center PC Cancel a scheduled recording
You may want to cancel a future recording to resolve a conflict, or because you don't want to record the program any more. 1. 2. 3. Press the Startbutton on your remote control and go to MyTV> RecordedTV>Scheduled. Choose the program you don't want to record and press OK. Choose DoNotRecord, or SeriesInfo>CancelSeries depending on what you want to do. Press the OK button to confirm.
Deleting a recorded program
You can delete old recordings you no longer want to free up hard drive space for new recordings. 1. 2. 3. Press the Startbutton on your remote control and go to MyTV> RecordedTV. Choose the program you want to delete from the list and press the OK button. Choose Delete from the menu and press the OK button. The program is now deleted from your hard disk.

There may be times when Media Center has been unable to record a program. When this happens an error message is generated to give you a clue as to what went wrong. Common error codes are listed below. Media Center will record programs based on the following priorities: 1. 2. 3. You can view errors by going to MyTV>RecordedTV>Scheduled>History. RecordingError Redundant Missed Conflict Cancelled Repeat Error ErrorMeaning Program already exists in the TV library, or has been deleted in the last 8 weeks. Your Media Center was turned off. This recording conflicted with another. You cancelled the recording. Media Center will not record repeats when you record an entire series. Unknown error which normally relates to: · · · Not enough space Deleted Partial Recorder failing to start TV signal lost Unable to communicate with set-top box
Low hard disk space, you should delete older recordings. You deleted the program from your hard drive. Only part of the program was recorded.

Managing hard drive storage
The amount of programs you can store depends on the size of your hard disk, space allocated for recording, and the recording quality. You can adjust these settings to meet your requirements.
Adjusting storage settings
1. Press the Startbutton on your remote control. 2. Go to Settings>TV>Recorder. 3. You now have 2 choices · · R ecorderstorage - manage storage allocation and quality (Fig. 23). R ecordingdefaults - manage the way recordings are handled (Fig. 24).

How Media Center handles images
· · · · · Media Center can only display certain types of images. The table below shows you what can be used. Some files are supported only when special filters and software are installed. Un-supported or damaged files will display as a standard icon. Folders appear in My Pictures even though they contain un-supported files. When you watch a slide show any un-supported files will be skipped.

Organising your digital photos
In order to make the most of your viewing experience you should spend a few minutes organising your pictures. There are 3 places where photos will be stored: · · · Your My Pictures folder. The Shared Pictures folder. Other drives such as DVD ROM or Memory Card.
Organising your My Pictures folder
1. Click Start>MyPictures (Fig. 25). 2. You now need to create a folder for your summer holiday pictures (as an example). Click Make a new folder under the Fileand olderTasks. F 3. Open the disk or device that contains your photos. Select the photos you want to add by: Pressing CTRL and A keys on your keyboard to · select all the photos, or · Holding the CTRL key down, click selected photos to highlight them 4. Now click Edit then Copy. 5. Open your new folder, e.g., Summer holiday and click Editthen Paste. 6. Your photos are now copied to your hard drive. 7. Do this for all your photos so that you can find them easily in the future.

Viewing your pictures
Viewing single pictures
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Press the Startbutton on your remote control. Choose MyPictures from the Start Screen. The My Pictures screen will display the contents of your My Pictures folder that you organised earlier (Fig. 27). Use the arrow buttons to select a folder or picture and press the OK button to open or view it. Your picture will open full screen. Press the OK button to zoom to 150%, press it again to zoom in to 225%. Press OK a third time to return to the normal size. Use the arrowbuttons to move around the picture.
Viewing a slide show with music
You can watch a slide show of your photos along with your favourite music tracks. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Press the Startbutton on your remote control. Go to MyMusic and start your favourite tracks playing. Press theStartbutton to return to the StartScreen. Go to MyPictures. Now choose which folder of pictures you want to view and press the OK button. Finally, choose PlaySlideShow from the menu.

Additional features
Settings for your slide shows
You can change the way the slide show function works: 1. 2. 3. 4. Press the Startbutton on the remote (or MoreInfo if you are viewing a slide show) and choose Settings. Now choose the Pictures option. Make any changes you want to (Fig. 28). Finally, choose Save to save your changes.
Save your pictures to CD or DVD
You can save your pictures to CD as a back up, or to give them to other people. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Insert a blank recordable CD or DVD disc into the drive. Go to MyPictures from the Start screen. Now select the CreateCD/DVD option from the left menu. You will be asked what type of disc you want to make. Select Data CD and select OK from the menu (Fig. 29). Follow the instructions in the CDWritingWizard to finish.

Editing and printing your pictures
Touch up your photos
You can remove red eye and adjust contrast in your pictures. 1. 2. 3. 4. Choose the picture you want to edit and press the MoreInfo button on your remote control. Select PictureDetailsfrom the menu and press OK. Choose TouchUpfrom the menu. Now select RedEye,Contrast, or Crop and adjust the settings. Select Saveand press the OK button to save the changes.
Rotating your pictures
Sometimes you might have images that need rotating to view them properly. Media Center lets you do this from your remote control. 1. 2. Choose the picture you want to rotate and press the MoreInfo button on your remote control. Select PictureDetails from the menu and press OK. Choose the RotateClockwiseorCounter-Clockwise options and press OK.

Printing your photos
You can print your favourite photos on your photo printer and give them to your friends and family. 1. 2.

Choose the picture you want to print and press the MoreInfo button on your remote control. SelectPictureDetails from the menu and press OK. Choose the Print option then Print again.

With Windows Media Player you can organise and manage your music collection to make it easier to do the things you want. · · · · · Copy your favourite CDs to your hard drive to create a music library. * Add or edit artist and track information as well as album art. Organise your music collection. Create playlists of your favourite tracks, or for different moods. Listen to Internet radio from around the world.
Media Center and Windows Media Player 10 support a wide range of music file formats. The table below shows you what type of music files can be used with Media Center. Creating your music jukebox
Recording settings
Media Center will allow you to create your own digital jukebox quickly and easily. When you insert an audio CD select CopyCD from the menu. Media Center will copy the tracks to your hard drive in Windows® Media Audio (.wma) format. You can even copy a CD while you are listening to it. You can change the quality of your recording using Windows® Media Player 10. Exit Media Center and return to Windows® XP. Open Media Player then select the Tools menu > Options > Rip Music. You have a choice of 3 formats: WindowsMediaAudio: tracks will be copied at a constant bit · rate. You can adjust the quality and file size from 48kbps (low quality) which uses approximately 22 MB per CD, up to 192kbps (high quality) which uses approximately 86 MB per CD. WindowsMediaAudiovariablerate: tracks are copied using a · variety of bit rates to compress the file as needed. The result is a smaller file that retains a high quality sound. WindowsMediaAudiolosslessmode: tracks keep the original · quality of the CD, ideal for audio buffs to archive their collection. However, file sizes are high. Can I record music as an MP3 file instead? If you wish to record as an MP3 file you need to change the Format option under RipSettings from WindowsMediaAudio to MP3.

Media Center PC Adding files to your jukebox
Now that you have set your recording options in Media Player you will be ready to start creating your jukebox. To do this you need to copy music CDs, or copy your existing music files to the My Music folder in your My Documents folder. When you copy a CD Media Center will create WMA files and store them in your My Music folder. You can access these files by pressing Start > MyMusic in Windows XP (Fig. 34). To copy a CD to your hard drive: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Press the Startbutton on your remote control. Choose MyMusic. Place a music CD into the DVD drive. After a few seconds Media Center will download artist and track information then start playing the CD. Now choose CopyCDfrom the menu options on the left and click the OK button (Fig. 35). Follow the onscreen instructions.

Creating your music library
You can create a music library from folders on your hard drive, or other computers on your home network.
1. Go to MyMusic and press the MoreInfobutton on your remote.
Select AddMusic from the menu. Then select AddFolders. Click Next to continue.
2. You now need to choose from the list of options to add folders
on your Media Center, or from another computer on your home network. Then select Next.

to add to your music library. When you are done select Next.
4. Finally you need to confirm your folder selection by clicking Next.
You will see a message `AddingMusic'. Click OK to continue using Media Center.

Play your music
Playing a song
You can play a single song in your music library: 1. 2. 3. Go to the MyMusic section in Media Center. Select Songs from the menu on the left. A list of the songs in your library is displayed, use the arrow buttons on your remote to select a song and press the OK button to play it.
Playing an album
You can play an album in your music library: 1. 2. 3. 4. Go to the MyMusic section in Media Center. Select Albums from the menu. A list of the albums in your music library is displayed. Select an album and press the OK button. You will see a list of the tracks on the album. You can select one to listen, or you can select Play from the left menu to listen to the whole album.

Playlists - create your own listening experience
Playlists allow you to add random tracks from your music library and listen to them together. You can create playlists for different moods, for example, parties, dinner, or just to chill out after a hard day at work. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Exit Media Center and return to the Windows XP Desktop. ClickStart>AllPrograms>MediaPlayer to open Media Player 10. Click the MediaLibrary button on the left menu. Now click Playlists in the menu and select the NewPlaylist option. Give your new playlist a name. To add a track to your playlist you need to right-click it and choose AddtoPlaylist. Select the playlist you wish to add the track to and click OK. Repeat this for all the tracks you want to add to your playlist.
Searching for music tracks
You can use the search function in My Music to find your favourite album, track or artist. 1. 2. Go to the MyMusic section of Media Center. Choose Albums,Artists,Playlists,SongsorGenresfrom the list to view a list of tracks.
You can also search for specific tracks. 1. 2. 3. Select Search from the menu on the left. Use the numeric keypad on your remote to enter keywords. Use thearrowbuttons to select a track from the results and press OK.
