This usually appearson the sonar's display as randompatternsof dots or lines. In severe cases, It can completely coverthe screen with blackdots, orcause the unit operate erraticly, or not at all. To eliminateor minimize the effects of electrical noise, first tryto determinethe cause. Withthe boat at rest in the water, the first thing you should do is turn all electrical equipmenton the boat off. Makecertain the engineis off, also. Turn yourMagnaon, then turn off ASP (Advanced Signal Processing). There should be a steadybottom signal on the display. Nowturn on each piece of electrical equipment on the boatand viewthe effecton the sonar'sdisplay. Forexample, turn onthebilgepumpandviewthesonardisplayfornoise. If no noiseis present, turn the pumpoff, then turn on the VHFradioandtransmit. Keepdoingthis until all electrical equipment has been turned on, their effect on the sonar display noted, then turned off. from an electrical instrument, trolling motor, pump, If youfind noiseinterference or radio, try to isolate the problem. You can usually re-route the sonar unit's power cable and transducer cable away from the wiring that is causing the interference. VHF radio antennacables radiate noise whentransmitting, so be certain to keepthesonar'swires awayfrom it. Youmay needto route the sonar unit'spowercabledirectlytothe battery to isolateitfromotherwiringon the boat. 1 2 3 4 5 5 6 6 6 7 8 9 9 10 11 cHART5PEED DISPLAY MODE ALARMS FISH ALARM DEPTH ALARM LAMP FEET/METER DISPLAyCONTRAST ASP (Advanced Signal Processing) TRANSDUCERS AND CONE ANGLES SIGNAL INTERPRETATION FISH ARCHES WATER TEMPERATURE ANDTHERMOCLINES SURVEYINGALAKE BAIT FISH SONAR TROUBLESHOOTING HOW TO OBTAIN SERVICE 12 14 14 15 16 16 16 17 18 19 20 21 certain everything exdept the sonar unit is turned off, then start the engine. Try using resistorsparkplugs, alternatorfilters, routing thesonarunit's cableawayfromenginewiring. Again, routing the powercabledirectlyto power the batteryhelpseliminatenoiseproblems. Make certain to use the in-line fuse supplied with the unit whenwiring the powercableto the battery. If no noise displays on the sonar unit from electrical equipment, then make 23 23 24 27 When no noise appearson the sonarunit afterall of the abovetests, then the noise source is probably cavitation. Many novices or persons with limited experience make hasty sonar installations which functionperfectlyin shallow water, orwhenthe boat is at rest. In nearlyallcases, thecause ofthe malfunction will be the locationand/or angle of the transducer. The face of the transducer must be placedin a location that has a smooth flow of water at all boat speeds. Readyourtransducerowners manual forthe best mounting position. The transducermay be in turbulentwater, It must be mounted in asmooth flow of waterin orderfor the sonarto work at all boat speeds. No fish arches whenthe Fish ID feature is off: 1. Makecertain transduceris pointingstraightdown. This isthe most common problemif a partial arch is displayed. If your unit is not working, orif you need technical help, please use the following troubleshooting section before contactinga service centeror the factory customerservice department. Itmaysave youthetroubleofreturning yourunit. See the HowTo ObtainServicesection on page 27 if you need service. INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing an Eaglesonar. Your Magna or Magna Plus is a high quality sonar designed for both professional and novice fishermen. These units have an automatic feature that finds and displays the bottom, fish, structure, and morel All you haveto do is pressthe on key. However, if you wish to fine tune theunit, all you haveto do is press the menu key. The Magna series has powerful featuresavailable through easy-to-use menus. To getstarted with your Eagle unit, first readthe installation section. This is where it all begins. Improperinstallation can cause problems downthe road. After you've read the instructions, installtheunit, then readthe rest of the manual. The more you know about your unit, the better it will performfor you. Take this manual for reference when you head forthe water. SONARTROUBLESHOOTING Unit won't turnon: 1. Check the power cable'sconnection at the unit. Also checkthe wiring. 2. Makecertainthe power cable is wired properly. The red wire connects tothe positivebatteryterminal, blackto negative orground. 3. Checkthe fuse. INSTALLATION 4. Measure the batteryvoltage atthe unit'spowerconnector. Itshouldbeat least 11 volts. If it isn't,the wiringtothe unit isdefective, thebatteiyterminalsorwiring on the terminals are corroded, orthebattery needs charging. Unit freezes, locks up, or operates erratically: 1. Electrical noise fromthe boat's motor, trollingmotor, oran accessorymaybe away interfering withthesonarunit. Re-routing thepowerandtransducercables from otherelectrical wiringon the boat mayhelp. Routethe sonarupit's power cabledirectlyto the battery instead of througha fuse blockor ignition switch Mountthe Magnain any convenient location, providedthere is clearance when it's tilted for the best viewing angle. Roles in the bracket's base allow wood screw or throughbolt mounting. It may be necessary to place a pieceof plywood on the back side of thin panelsto reinforce thepanel. Make certainthere is enough room behind the unit to attach thepower and transducercables. 2. Inspect the transducercablefor breaks, cuts, or pinchedwires. 3. Check both the transducerand powerconnectors. Make certain both are securelyplugged in to the unit. Weak bottom echo, digItal readings erratic, or no fish signals: 1. Make certain transduceris pointing straightdown. Clean the face of the transducer. Oil, dirt, andfuelcancauseafilmtoformonthetransducer, reducing its effectiveness. If the transducer is mounted inside the hull, be sure it is shootingthroughonly one layeroffiberglassand that it is securelybondedto the hull. Do NOT use RTV siliconerubberadhesive or MarinetexN. 24 Drilla hole in the dashfor thepowerand transducer cables. The best location for this hole is immediately under the gimbal bracket. This way, the bracket covers the hole. The smallest hole both the power and transducer cables can passthrough is one inch. However, you can't passa poweror transducerconnectorand anothercablethrough 1 PDF compression, OCR, web-optimization with CVISION's PdfCompressor a one inch hole. Therefore, after drilling the hole, pass the transducer connectorup through the hole from underthe dash. Then drop the powercable down from the front side of thedash. Slide the bracket over the hole, then route the transducerand power cablesout the slots in the bracket. Finally, fasten the bracket to the dash. POWER CONNECTIONS SURVEYING A LAKE The Magnaworks from a 12 volt DC systemonly. For thebest results, run thepowercable directlyto theboat's battery. Keep the power cable awayfrom other boat wiring, especially the engine's wires. This will givethe best isolation from electrical noise. If the supplied cable is not long enough to reach the battery, splice#18 gauge insulated wire to it. You can attach the powercableto an accessoryor power buss, however, you may have problemswith electrical interference. See page 26 for more information on electrical noise. The mostsuccessful anglers on any body of water are thosewho fish it day afterday and year after year. Eventually, they learn the hot spots that produce fish consistently. They discoverthrough experiencewhere, and at what depth, they can expect to find the fish they want at any season. And they realizethat these productive areas change throughoutthe year depending on water level, temperature, food, and other factors. With the Magna, anyone can eliminate guesswork and concentrate on the areas where fish are likely to be. Even if it's the first timeon the lake! The mostefficientway to becomeacquainted with a body of wateris to survey it with your Magna. Start with a map of thelake, if possible, and indicatethepromising spots in relation to landmarks on shore. As you go about your ...
